• Join Production Server 2008 to 2003 domain

  I administer a production server for a .com. It is live right now. Server 2008 x64 IIS 7 SQL 2008 PHP MYSQL I have another server which is a DC Server 2003 x86 and a warm standby for the website, sql, DFS, exchange queue. In order to get DFS going to transfer user photos and other content I need it in the domain. My question is, What preparations do I need to do to the production server to allow a smooth transition onto the domain? Things such as permissions for the website. I do not want to be running around resetting all the permissions. The Group Policy on the DC is completely default. Should I add the DNS manually or allow it to add itself? Anything else I left out.

  I need to set-up Lync on a Server 2008 machine. The problem is that Lync cannot be set up on a Domain Controller. That means I need to have one Server 2008 that's a domain controller and another that's Server 2008 running Lync. I figured the best way would be hosting it on a single machine, using virtual machines. I installed Server 2008, but now my question is this. Do I add two virtual machines (Domain Controller and Lync), or do I only add one virtual machine for Lync, and the 'parent' Server 2008 can act as a domain controller?

  I have created a set of tables (around 20) in SQL Server 2008 and entered around 1000 records to appropriate tables. But the issue is that I want that same tables with all the entered data into SQL Server 2005 (SQLEXPRESS). Obviously it won't work by taking a backup and restore it into SQL Server 2005 as it won't support backward compatibility. Any suggestion would be appreciated....

  I followed the advice of izx on how to install TexLive 2012 using the texlive-backports PPA. Before I started I removed all TexLive-related packages. The installation finished and everything seems to work fine. The only thing I noticed are some warnings in the output of the installer.   Hello ! I have tried to sett my DC to get its time from several NTP severs. First I disable Time Synchronization in the Hyper-V Integration Services for each guest. Then restart the Windows Time serviceon the guest. • SQL Server 2008 Restore from Backup fails with error 3241 'cannot process this media family'

  I am attempting to backup a database from a SQL Server instance on one machine and restore it to another, and I am encountering the frequently discovered 'SQL Server cannot process this media family' error. Each of my instances are SQL Server 2008, but with different patch levels Restore: 10.0.2531.0 Backup: 10.0.1600.22 ((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414 ) The restore DB is express. Not sure about the backup version. The backup version is on a virtual private server. The restore is on my development box. When I restore to a different database on the source (backup) server, it restores fine. Lots of stuff on google about this issue, some on stackoverflow about this issue, but nothing which is this exact situation. Any thoughts? It should be straightforward to do a backup and restore from one machine to another (having done this thousands of times in with SQL 6.5,7,2000,2005). Any ideas how to restore a database in this situation, which gives this error when attempting to restore? PARTIAL RESOLUTION: When I restored to a different box, running SQL 2008 Express on Windows Server 2003, all worked well. It just wouldn't work on the Windows 7 box. Not sure why. If anyone else has a similar experience, please let me know (there are many similar issues in different forums out there).

• Can't connect to a Hyper-V VM from anywhere but the host OS

  I have an unusual situation on hand where I'm able to connect to a Hyper-V guest VM from the HOST, but not from anywhere but the host. The VM is running WIn2k8R2 and has IIS installed and Remote Desktop enabled. If I browse to the IP from the host OS, the IIS7 page displays. I can also RDP into the guest OS from the host as well as ping. From OFF the host, RDP, web and ping all fail. If I completely shut off the guest VM's firewall, ping will then start to respond, but all RDP and port 80 still don't. The physical host machine has 2 nics installed, but only one is plugged in. The one plugged in has a static IP. I have one Hyper-V virtual network and it's set to external. The guest VM has one NIC with a different static IP than the host, but both are on the same subnet. The host machine is joined to the domain, the guest VM is not. Any sugestions? Thanks so much for any help you may be able to provide!

• Hyper-V 2008 R2 synthetic networking stops working with linux 2.6.32.15

  Hi there, so I thought I'd give Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise a try on my Homeserver (yes, it's legit... got it from msdnaa). First thing to throw at it was my firewall which runs IPFire. This distribution currently uses the kernel version 2.6.32.15 and comes with the Hyper-V drivers. So I enabled them and at first they work just fine but after a few minutes they just fail. There are no packages going in or out anymore until I reboot the VM but sometimes even that won't work so the VM just keeps "Stopping" like forever. Emulated networking works fine but it slow and uses more CPU. That way my firewall routes slower than when running under virtualbox on an atom N270. My server has an E6750; VM is limited to 25%, but that should still outperform this atom CPU especially since it's never going anywhere near 100% CPU load, so give me a break! A quick google search led me to people having the same problem (even with other distributions and kernel versions that include those drivers) but no solution yet... I already found this but I can't quite follow the author on the part where he solved the issue - especially since I need two virtual nics for my firewall distro to work (obviously one internal and one external) What am I missing here?

  First off let me say that I'm not a network admin or server guy, I know very little about that stuff. What I'm trying to do is setup a virtualized domain using hyper-V. Here is the configuration: Physical Server: 4Mb RAM Windows Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V Virtual Environment: One Domain Controller running Windows Server 2008 R2 One Client running Windows Server 2008 R2 I have been successful in setting up a virtual domain controller and adding a virtual client to that domain controller but I'm stuck at trying to give the virtual Environment Internet access. I can give the client VM Internet access if I remove them from the virtual domain but once I add them back to the virtual domain, Internet access is gone. I've read articles describing many different ways this can be done (using RRAS with NAT, using a wireless connection, etc...) but all of those articles only cover a small piece of the setup and also seem to be geared towards people who know there way around networking and servers which I don't. I'd like to know more but my thing is software development and I have my hands full trying to keep up with everything in that realm. I simply want to setup a virtual domain with Internet access for testing. Can anyone point me to any "for Dummy's" type information on how to setup this type of environment or can anyone provide this kind of step-by-step help. Any help would be very much appreciated.

• Win 8.1 Hyper-v Full Screen and VPN problems

  I need to connect to my office using Cisco VPN software (RSA). Once connected all my internet traffic goes through the employer's VPN and this prevents me from listening to spotify. As a way around this I created a Win 2012 VM that I run in hyper-v from my Windows 8.1 Client. First I RDP to the VM, then I connect to the VPN. This forces the RDP session between my host laptop and the VM to close. I then open the hyper-v manager and double-click my VM to get a connection back (not great because I don't get the use of copy & paste this way). Previously when I opened my VM this way I would have full screen. I'm using a 1920x1080 monitor. Today when I re-open my connection to the VM it is displayed in a window that uses maybe 75% of the full screen. I have tried the menu option View\Full Screen Mode only centres the screen and apply black borders around the outside. Could anyone please suggest how I may solve the VPN or Full Screen problems? • How to setup ping between XP guest from Win8 Host using Hyper-V virtual swtich

  Hyper-V client is installed on a Win8 Pro 64 bit box and a VM running XP has been created within that with an internal virtual swtich. The VM can be booted and accessed and there is a default virtual NIC within it with dynamic IP of 169.254.x.x which i have changed to be a static IP of 192.168.0.12/255.255.255.0 confirmed via ipconfig on the XP guest. The Host has IP of 192.168.0.7/255.255.255.0. Both host and guest have their firewalls disabled for simplicity. I cant ping guest from host nor host from guest. TTL timeout. And with regard to Hyper-V and VMs I dont know what to do next. Both are in same workgroup (as per name) but since they cant ping I guess that means nothing. .... My objective is to share a folder on VM so I can install a 32bit accountancy app that wont run on Win8/7 so if there is a more simplistic way then Im all ears but typically a peer to peer is very simple.

  So, I'm looking at rebuilding my home server. My current setup is the following Windows 7 Ultimate 1TB Boot Drive (my smallest drive) Windows Dynamic Spanned volume, continaing 1x 1TB drive, 2x 2TB drives, totalling 5TB. I am upgrading to a hardware RAID controller, and I would like to run Hyper-V server core. However, I want to retain the ability to join my "file server" to a homegroup, so I must use Windows 7. I know VHDs can only be like 127GB or something, so I obviously need to directly connect disks to my Windows 7 machine. Here is my plan: Server Core 2008 R2 (Hyper-V) 1TB Boot Drive (storing VHDs for boot drives of VMs) - possibly in a RAID 1 with my other 1TB drive 5x 2TB drives (1x 2TB drive hot spare), totalling 10TB, directly attached to a Windows 7 VM, for use of homegroup for this array. In the past, I directly attached the windows dynamic volume to a Windows 7 VM, and performance was abysmal. The question is, with hardware RAID, will it really make that much of a difference? Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what. Crawl log says there is Error in the Site Data Web Service., nothing more. There were known issues with a similar error: Error in the Site Data Web Service. First I have found that the DFL/FFL were not correct: On the DC (server2003) I have changed the Domain Functional Level to Windows Server 2003 and also the Forest Functional Level to Windows Server 2003. If I check these settings on the Server2008 with Active Directory Domains and Trusts, I see indeed that the DFL and FFL are being set to Windows Server 2003. (Windows Server 2003 is the minimum required for Lync server 2010) I tried the Lync AD Preparation again but still got the same message: https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=CB15F1A932B364BE&id=CB15F1A932B364BE%211742 I'm logged in on the Server2008 and Server2003 with the domain administrator account. If I check "Active Directory Users and Computers" and go to the directory Users and watch the properties from the Administrator User then it is also a Member of: Domain Admins Domain Users Enterprise Admins Schema Admins Group Policy Creator Owners The firewall on the server2008 is turned off, still nog working So now my question is: what should I do to make the Lync setup (Active Directory Preparation) work? (I would appreciate clear step-by-step suggestions to check.) Thanks in advance. Update 2: I found out that there is a log on "C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp\ with this: Get-CSDomainState Get Domain State Error: An error occurred: "Microsoft.Rtc.Management.ADConnect.NoSuitableServerFoundException" "No suitable domain controller was found in domain "OurDomain.LOCAL".
