  • How does one advance in programming?

    I really have the felling as if I'm stuck in my own craft. I've been developing and learning for a while now and keep having the feeling that I should advance more, or even be more knowledgeable. I've started projects I didn't finish because I thought I lacked the knowledge and the skill to make that feature work just right, or to make that code magically appear on my screen. I've read books I didn't finish, thinking I wasn't advanced enough for the subjects they covered. I've been around long enough to know that everything comes with experience, hard work and dedication. Having said this, I just want to be able to work without getting stuck on a particular problem that involves my cluelessness of a language or a tool feature. My question to you would be, how does one advance in programming? What are the secrets (if any) to advance to the point of fluency in a particular language or a task. Thank you!

  • Windows Identity Foundation - Local STS on Windows Azure.

    Hello, I am trying to use Federated authentication on Azure. I found a example of having a local sts outside azure which is used for authentication from a web role hosted in azure. This works perfectly. My issue is, i dont want to have an application outside azure. Instead, I want to host the local sts website also in azure. So in effect I will have two web roles (1. my actual website, 2. the sts). I tried the above approach my creating a new webrole and moving the files from my original sts project. But i am getting compilation errors even if I reference the required dlls. I have also set "copy local" to true. It will be very helpful if somebody can guide me.. Thanks

  • How do you get speech dictated without adding it to a grammar list?

    I'm new to Speech Recognition, and I'm working on a project that will receive a command from a recognizable list. For example, I would say "Play song". The computer would ask the song title, and I can say it. It will then compare my answer to my music library and find it. I know how to add recognizable grammar to the SpeechRecognizer object, how to make the computer speak, and how to play a song in iTunes. I cannot, however, figure out how to get it to dictate or listen and interpret something that isn't in the grammar list. Is there a method I'm missing? Or not yet been simplified by Microsoft? I have no code to show for this, as I am not even sure how to search for this particular idea. Of course, I could have the program read my entire library, but that's not an optimal solution considering I have tens of thousands of songs. Thanks in advance!

The error I am having is anything below tester=invalidCharacters(c); does not compile because every line past tester=invalidCharacters(c); is looking for a symbol or the class. In get invalidResults, all I am trying to do is evaluate a given string for non-alphabetical characters such as *,(,^,&,%,@,#,), and so on. There may even be two hash lookups on line 'B' -- one to get the int value and another to update it.

  • How do I tell gdb how long my zero-length array is?

    Slightly oxymoronic title! Bonus points for Xcode answer but it's a gdb question. If I have a standard, statically sized array gdb will print all its elements [and Xcode will let me browse through it] but if I have a zero length array, it won't, because it doesn't know. Obviously I can print the array indexes one by one, but I'd like a dump of the whole thing. How do I tell gdb how much space I have allocated for the array to allow it to print the array (or to allow Xcode to view the array). Is it even possible?

  • How can I create a menu in the start menu for my program?

    This may be an easy question but I am not even sure of the terminology to search, so I have to ask. I want my program to have a menu when it is hovered over if it is pinned to the start menu. I am attaching a screenshot where windows powershell illustrates this function, and presents a list of tasks. Other programs sometimes use this to list recently opened files, etc. I am sure this is standard enough that there is a tutorial on it somewhere, would someone mind pointing me to it, or explaining how to do this? I hope that it doesn't matter too much what language is used, but I am proficient in Delphi, C++, and C#.

  • Things one needs to know while writing a game engine

    I have been dabbling in game development as a hobby for a while now, and I cannot seam to quite get my games to sparkle at least a bit with some graphics. I have decided to write a simple test game engine that only focuses on the representation of graphics - shapes, textures and surfaces. While I have a few very simple game engines designed for my own games under my belt, I want to create a game engine that I can use to display and play with graphics. I'm going to do this in C++. Since this is my first time with a major engine, the engine in not going to focus on 3D graphics, it's going to be a mixture of isometric and 2D graphics. My previous engines have incorporated (been able to draw) or focused on simple flat (almost 2D) non impressive graphic designs and representations of: the player NPCs objects walls and surfaces textures Also, I had some basic AI and sometimes even sound. They also saved and loaded games. They didn't have a map editor or a level editor. Is this going to be a problem in the future? At this time I have to point out that some of my games didn't get finished because I was to lazy to write the few last levels. My question at this point would be: What are some things one should know if one wants write (develope) a better graphical game engine with all it's functions.

  • Switching from Java to .NET from a career change point of view

    Could anyone share with me their experience with switching from Java to .NET from a career point of view? I've been a Java developer for 12 years and am just getting tired of how fragmented the Java world has become. For my liking, there's just too many frameworks, tools, application servers, etc.. And it seems each new tool just adds complexity and time to even the simplest of projects. I'm not trying to start any wars - I'm just giving you the reason I ask the main question. I've read a few books on .NET and have done one WebForms job. I love the integrated environment and would like to hear how others transitioned from Java to .NET. What I mean by that is did you do it somehow as a contractor or did you join a company as a beginner .NET developer with much Java experience? Personally, I'm ready to take the leap if I can figure out how to not lose too much income in the process (Senior Java developer to beginner .NET developer). I would really appreciate hearing your stories.

  • ASP.NET MVC application architecture "guidelines"

    I'm looking for some feedback on my ASP.NET MVC based CMS application architecture. Domain Model - depends on nothing but the System classes to define types. For now, mostly anemic. Repository Layer - abstracted data access, only called by the services layer Services Layer - performs business logic on domain models. Exposes view models to the controllers. ViewModelMapper - service that translates back and forth between view models and domain models Controllers - super thin "traffic cop" style functionality that interacts with the service layer and only talks in terms of view models, never domain models My domain model is mostly used as data transfer (DTO) objects and has minimal logic at the moment. I'm finding this is nice because it depends on nothing (not even classes in the services layer). The services layer is a bit tricky... I only want the controllers to have access to viewmodels for ease of GUI programming. However, some of the services need to talk to each other. For example, I have an eventing service that notifies other listener services when content is tagged, when blog posts are created, etc. Currently, the methods that take domain models as inputs or return them are marked internal so they can't be used by the controllers. Sounds like overkill? Not enough abstraction? I'm mainly doing this as a learning exercise in being strict about architecture, not for an actual product, so please no feedback along the lines of "right depends on what you want to do". thanks!     I'm trying to extract unique properties from a knockout.js observableArray of objects, to populate a drop menu. Being new to knockout, I'm really struggling with this! I want to iterate over a contacts list, and populate a drop menu with a unique value from each person object within the observableArray.     I have problems with cookies with cURL. After problems I turned on verbose function and figured out cURL sets them negative expire date even if server sends positive date. Example: * Added cookie _c_sess=""test"" for domain test.com, path /, expire -1630024962 < Set-Cookie: _c_sess="test"; Domain=test.com; HttpOnly; expires=Mon, 26-Mar-2012 14:52:47 GMT; Max-Age=1332773567; Path=/ As you can see both expires and max-age are positive, but cURL sets expire to negative value.   • SEO - Does google+other search engines index links within <noscript> tags?

    I have setup some dropdown menus allowing users to find pages on my website by selecting options across multiple dropdowns: eg. Color of Car, Year This would generate a link like: mysite.xyz/blue/2010/ The only problem is, because this link is dynamically assembled with Javascript, I've also had to assemble each possible combination from the dropdowns into a list like: <noscript> No javascript enabled? Here are all the links: <a href='mysite.xyz/blue/2009/'>mysite.xyz/blue/2009/</a> <a href='mysite.xyz/blue/2010/'>mysite.xyz/blue/2010/</a> <a href='mysite.xyz/red/2009/'>mysite.xyz/red/2009/</a> <a href='mysite.xyz/red/2010/'>mysite.xyz/red/2010/</a> </noscript> My question is, if I put these in a tag like this, will I be penalized or anything by search engines such as Google? I've already been doing so for some navigational stuff which required offsets etc. However, now I would be listing a whole list of links here too. I want to provide them here, moreso so that google can actually index my pages - but for those without javascript, they can still navigate too. Your thoughts? Also.. even though I have some links that appear to have been indexed, I AM NOT 100% SURE, which is why I'm asking :P

  • Retrieving friend's likes from the Facebook Graph API

    Howdy- I have been tooling around with the Facebook Graph API and successfully retrieved back a list of my likes, and a list of my friends (once I authenticated using OAuth). But what I really want to achieve is pulling back my friend's likes. When I try and do that, obviously using the same URL that I use to pull back my own likes but subbing the friend's user id for "me", I don't get anything back, unless they have installed the app as well. Then I get them no problem. To be clear, I can only see the likes of friends who have installed my application. So clearly I am running into a security/rights issue of some sort. I could see where this would be the case; you simply aren't allowed to see your friend's likes unless they have installed the same app. Fair enough, but then how is blekko.com doing it? I even tried using FQL without much luck. I suspect I am missing something totally obvious. Anyone had any luck with this? Maybe with the Javascript API or one of the other access methods?     I'm having a frustrating problem with a has_many through: namely the fact that the through models are not created until save. Unfortunately, I need to set data on these models prior to saving the parent. Here's the loose setup: class Wtf < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :foo belongs_to :bar end class Bar < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :wtfs has_many :foos, :through => :wtfs end class Foo < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :wtfs has_many :bars, :through => :wtfs def after_initialize Bar.all.each do |bar| bars << bar end end end Everything is fine except that I need to access the "wtf"'s prior to save: f = Foo.new = # f.bars = [list of bars] empty list here f.wtfs = [] f.save! = true now I get stuff f.wtfs = [list of stuff] I even went so far as to explicitly create the wtfs doing this: def after_initialize Bar.all.each do |bar| wtfs << Wtf.new( :foo => self, :bar => bar, :data_i_need_to_set => 10) end end This causes the f.wtfs to be populated, but not the bars. When I save and retrieve, I get double the expected wtfs. Anyone have any ideas?

    I'm trying to setup Windows Backup on a Server 2008 machine to backup to a network share. When I run the wizard to setup the backup I get an error message "The user name being used for accessing the remote share folder is not recognized by the local computer". I have no idea what this means. Help? The server with the network share is a domain controller (also server 2008). The server I am trying to back up is not and is not part of the domain.

  • How to debug Ubuntu/Cisco VPN issues

    I'm trying to connect an Ubuntu laptop (9.10) with some kind of Cisco VPN device; I don't know what's on the other end, and I'm not likely to find out exactly what. I know my company allows VPN from Linux clients because they provide one that I cannot get to install (it fails to compile). I've had the most luck with the network-manager-vpnc package, however I can't figure out what's failing.   • West Palm Beach Developers&rsquo; Group Celebrates its Fifth Anniversary as a Member of INETA

    Earlier this week marked our fifth anniversary as an INETA group, a fact that we had forgotten but thankfully INETA remembered. In celebrating our membership, INETA sent us a certificate recognizing our membership which we will be sharing with our members at our upcoming meeting. It‘s been a great two-year tenure for me as group co-coordinator working with Venkat Subramanian who had been involved with the group since its inception. Moving into the future we hope to grow both group membership and leadership. We continue to strive to bring added value to our membership which can only happen with your ideas, feedback and involvement in our community-driven group. Our next almost sold-out meeting will be taking place on 8/28/2012 6:30PM (Register at: http://www.fladotnet.com/Reg.aspx?EventID=607) . Will Strohl, DotNetNuke’s Technical Evangelist will be presenting to us an overview on getting started with DNN’s latest 6.2 version all while taking us on a deep dive into its built-in social networking integration features. There is still time to register, but don’t procrastinate! Our September meeting will feature Jonas Stawski, Microsoft MVP sharing with us on SignalR while October will bring us the much anticipated visit by our Microsoft Developer Evangelist Joe Healy who will be talking to us about the latest with Windows 8.   • How can I sync with an iPod Nano 6G?

    I'm having no luck at all with this iPod Nano. I've tried the following software: Banshee - The iPod shows up and files seem to be copied, but they don't show up on the iPod. Rhythmbox - Same as Banshee. Claims to sync but no files available on the iPod gPodder - At first it wouldn't even recognize the device even though I set the mount point and device type. After syncing one file to the iPod from iTunes on my mac it now behaves as Banshee and Rythmbox. gtkpod - Again: Copies the files but they are inacessible on the iPod. Hipo - Doesn't even recognize the iPod Amarok - What is this, I don't even... So to summarize: After some fiddling I can get most of these apps to recognize the iPod and copy files to it, but they are not accessible on the iPod which sort of defeats the whole purpose. Help me out here. My continued harmonic love life depends on it. (Yes, it's the girlfriends iPod and laptop)

  • Open vSwitch and Xen Private Networks

    I've read about the possibilities of using Open vSwitch with Xen to route traffic between domUs on multiple physical hosts. I'd like to be able to group the multiple domUs I have spread out across multiple physical hosts into a number of private networks. However, I've found no documentation on how to integrate Open vSwitch with Xen (rather than XenServer) and am unsure how I should go about doing so and then creating the private networks described. As you might have gathered then - from research I think Open vSwitch can do what I need it to, but I just can't find anything giving me a push in the right direction of how to actually use it to do so! This may well be because Open vSwitch is quite new (version 1.0 released on May 17). Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated!
