  • Creating a Comment Anchor

    - by John
    Hello, The function below allows a user to insert a comment into a MySQL table called "comment." Then, the file "comments2.php" displays all comments for a given submission. Right after a user submits a comment, I would like the top of the user's browser to be anchored by the comment the user just submitted. How can I do this? Thanks in advance, John The function: function show_commentbox($submissionid, $submission, $url, $submittor, $submissiondate, $countcomments, $dispurl) { echo '<form action="http://www...com/.../comments/comments2.php" method="post"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$_SESSION['loginid'].'" name="uid"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$submissionid.'" name="submissionid"> <input type="hidden" value="'.stripslashes($submission).'" name="submission"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$url.'" name="url"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$submittor.'" name="submittor"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$submissiondate.'" name="submissiondate"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$countcomments.'" name="countcomments"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$dispurl.'" name="dispurl"> <label class="addacomment" for="title">Add a comment:</label> <textarea class="checkMax" name="comment" type="comment" id="comment" maxlength="1000"></textarea> <div class="commentsubbutton"><input name="submit" type="submit" value="Submit"></div> </form> '; } The file comments2.php contains: $query = sprintf("INSERT INTO comment VALUES (NULL, %d, %d, '%s', NULL)", $uid, $subid, $comment); mysql_query($query) or die(mysql_error()); $submissionid = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['submissionid']); $submissionid = mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['submissionid']); $sqlStr = "SELECT comment.comment, comment.datecommented, login.username FROM comment LEFT JOIN login ON comment.loginid=login.loginid WHERE submissionid=$submissionid ORDER BY comment.datecommented ASC LIMIT 100"; $tzFrom1 = new DateTimeZone('America/New_York'); $tzTo1 = new DateTimeZone('America/Phoenix'); $result = mysql_query($sqlStr); $arr = array(); echo "<table class=\"commentecho\">"; $count = 1; while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $dt1 = new DateTime($row["datecommented"], $tzFrom1); $dt1->setTimezone($tzTo1); echo '<tr>'; echo '<td rowspan="3" class="commentnamecount">'.$count++.'.</td>'; echo '<td class="commentname2"><a href="http://www...com/.../members/index.php?profile='.$row["username"].'">'.$row["username"].'</a></td>'; echo '<td rowspan="3" class="commentname1">'.stripslashes($row["comment"]).'</td>'; echo '</tr>'; echo '<tr>'; echo '<td class="commentname2">'.$dt1->format('F j, Y').'</td>'; echo '</tr>'; echo '<tr>'; echo '<td class="commentname2a">'.$dt1->format('g:i a').'</td>'; echo '</tr>'; } echo "</table>"; The fields in the MySQL table "comment": commentid loginid submissionid comment datecommented

  • boost::function & boost::lambda again

    - by John Dibling
    Follow-up to post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2978096/using-width-precision-specifiers-with-boostformat I'm trying to use boost::function to create a function that uses lambdas to format a string with boost::format. Ultimately what I'm trying to achieve is using width & precision specifiers for strings with format. boost::format does not support the use of the * width & precision specifiers, as indicated in the docs: Width or precision set to asterisk (*) are used by printf to read this field from an argument. e.g. printf("%1$d:%2$.*3$d:%4$.*3$d\n", hour, min, precision, sec); This class does not support this mechanism for now. so such precision or width fields are quietly ignored by the parsing. so I'm trying to find other ways to accomplish the same goal. Here is what I have so far, which isn't working: #include <string> #include <boost\function.hpp> #include <boost\lambda\lambda.hpp> #include <iostream> #include <boost\format.hpp> #include <iomanip> #include <boost\bind.hpp> int main() { using namespace boost::lambda; using namespace std; boost::function<std::string(int, std::string)> f = (boost::format("%s") % boost::io::group(setw(_1*2), setprecision(_2*2), _3)).str(); std::string s = (boost::format("%s") % f(15, "Hello")).str(); return 0; } This generates many compiler errors: 1>------ Build started: Project: hacks, Configuration: Debug x64 ------ 1>Compiling... 1>main.cpp 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2872: '_1' : ambiguous symbol 1> could be 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/lambda/core.hpp(69) : boost::lambda::placeholder1_type &boost::lambda::`anonymous-namespace'::_1' 1> or 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/bind/placeholders.hpp(43) : boost::arg<I> `anonymous-namespace'::_1' 1> with 1> [ 1> I=1 1> ] 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2664: 'std::setw' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'boost::lambda::placeholder1_type' to 'std::streamsize' 1> No user-defined-conversion operator available that can perform this conversion, or the operator cannot be called 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2872: '_2' : ambiguous symbol 1> could be 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/lambda/core.hpp(70) : boost::lambda::placeholder2_type &boost::lambda::`anonymous-namespace'::_2' 1> or 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/bind/placeholders.hpp(44) : boost::arg<I> `anonymous-namespace'::_2' 1> with 1> [ 1> I=2 1> ] 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2664: 'std::setprecision' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'boost::lambda::placeholder2_type' to 'std::streamsize' 1> No user-defined-conversion operator available that can perform this conversion, or the operator cannot be called 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2872: '_3' : ambiguous symbol 1> could be 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/lambda/core.hpp(71) : boost::lambda::placeholder3_type &boost::lambda::`anonymous-namespace'::_3' 1> or 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/bind/placeholders.hpp(45) : boost::arg<I> `anonymous-namespace'::_3' 1> with 1> [ 1> I=3 1> ] 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2660: 'boost::io::group' : function does not take 3 arguments 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2228: left of '.str' must have class/struct/union 1>Build log was saved at "file://c:\Users\john\Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects\hacks\x64\Debug\BuildLog.htm" 1>hacks - 7 error(s), 0 warning(s) ========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ========== My fundamental understanding of boost's lambdas and functions is probably lacking.   • Match over multiple lines perl regular expression

This was working fine, but it doesn't seem to able to match over multiple lines any more. For example the pattern 31 31 32 32 33 31 runs over multiple lines, and the regular expression doesn't seem to catch it. I tried using /m /s pattern modifiers to ignore new lines but they didn't match it either. The only way around it I can come up with, is to read the whole file into a string using: undef $/; my $whole_file = <FH>; my $line = $whole_file; $line =~ s/(00 00 00 64)/<incr4> /g; $line =~ s/(00 00 00 65)/<incr4> /g; $line =~ s/(30 30 30 30 30 32)/<incr6ascii:999999:0>/g; $line =~ s/(31 31 32 32 33 31)/<incr6ascii:999999:0>/g; print OUTPUT $line; This works, the tags get inserted correctly, but the structure of the file is radically altered. It is all dumped out on a single line. I would like to retain the structure of the file as it appears here. Any ideas as to how I might do this? /john

  • User Getting Logged Out After Making First Comment

    - by John
    Hello, I am using a login system that works well. I am also using a comment system. The comment function does not show up unless the user is logged in (as shown in commentformonoff.php below). When a user makes a comment, the info is passed from the function "show_commentbox" to the file comments2a.php. Then, the info is passed to the file comments2.php. When the site is first pulled up on a browser, after logging in and making a comment, the user is logged out. After logging in a second time during the same browser session, the user is no longer logged out after making a comment. How can I keep the user logged in after making the first comment? Thanks in advance, John Commentformonoff.php: <?php if (!isLoggedIn()) { if (isset($_POST['cmdlogin'])) { if (checkLogin($_POST['username'], $_POST['password'])) { show_commentbox($submissionid, $submission, $url, $submittor, $submissiondate, $countcomments, $dispurl); } else { echo "<div class='logintocomment'>Login to comment</div>"; } } else { echo "<div class='logintocomment'>Login to comment</div>"; } } else { show_commentbox($submissionid, $submission, $url, $submittor, $submissiondate, $countcomments, $dispurl); } ?> Function "show_commentbox": function show_commentbox($submissionid, $submission, $url, $submittor, $submissiondate, $countcomments, $dispurl) { echo '<form action="http://www...com/.../comments/comments2a.php" method="post"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$_SESSION['loginid'].'" name="uid"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$_SESSION['username'].'" name="u"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$submissionid.'" name="submissionid"> <input type="hidden" value="'.stripslashes($submission).'" name="submission"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$url.'" name="url"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$submittor.'" name="submittor"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$submissiondate.'" name="submissiondate"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$countcomments.'" name="countcomments"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$dispurl.'" name="dispurl"> <label class="addacomment" for="title">Add a comment:</label> <textarea class="checkMax" name="comment" type="comment" id="comment" maxlength="1000"></textarea> <div class="commentsubbutton"><input name="submit" type="submit" value="Submit"></div> </form> '; } Included in comments2a.php: $uid = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['uid']); $u = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['u']); $query = sprintf("INSERT INTO comment VALUES (NULL, %d, %d, '%s', NULL)", $uid, $subid, $comment); mysql_query($query) or die(mysql_error()); $lastcommentid = mysql_insert_id(); header("Location: comments2.php?submission=".$submission."&submissionid=".$submissionid."&url=".$url."&submissiondate=".$submissiondate."&comment=".$comment."&subid=".$subid."&uid=".$uid."&u=".$u."&submittor=".$submittor."&countcomments=".$countcomments."&dispurl=".$dispurl."#comment-$lastcommentid"); exit(); Included in comments2.php: if($_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] == "POST"){header('Location: http://www...com/.../comments/comments2.php?submission='.$submission.'&submissionid='.$submissionid.'&url='.$url.'&submissiondate='.$submissiondate.'&submittor='.$submittor.'&countcomments='.$countcomments.'&dispurl='.$dispurl.'');} $uid = mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['uid']); $u = mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['u']);

The panelists included Janice Rohn, VP of User Experience at Experian; Tami Hardeman, a food stylist; Ed Seiber, a restaurant architect and designer; John Kessler, a food critic and writer at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; and Larry Powers, Chef de Cuisine at Shaun's restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia. Building off the momentum of his highly acclaimed panel at CHI 2009 on what interaction design can learn from food design (for which I was on the other side as a panelist), Venkatacharya brought together new people with different roles in the restaurant and software interaction design fields. The session was also quite delicious -- but more on that later. Criticism, as it applies to food and product or interaction design, was the tasty topic for this forum and showed that strong parallels exist between food and interaction design criticism. Figure 1. The panelists in discussion: (left to right) Janice Rohn, Ed Seiber, Tami Hardeman, and John Kessler. The panelists had great insights to share from their respective fields, and they enthusiastically discussed as if they were at a casual collegial dinner. John Kessler stated that he prefers to have one professional critic's opinion in general than a large sampling of customers, however, "Web sites like Yelp get users excited by the collective approach. People are attracted to things desired by so many." Janice Rohn added that this collective desire was especially true for users of consumer products. Ed Seiber remarked that while people looked to the popular view for their target tastes and product choices, "professional critics like John [Kessler] still hold a big weight on public opinion." Chef Powers indicated that chefs take in feedback from all sources, adding, "word of mouth is very powerful. We also look heavily at the sales of the dishes to see what's moving; what's selling and thus successful." Hearing this discussion validates our design work at Oracle in that we listen to our users (our diners) and industry feedback (our critics) to ensure an optimal user experience of our products. Rohn considers that restaurateur Danny Meyer's book, Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business, which is about creating successful restaurant experiences, has many applicable parallels to user experience design. Meyer actually argues that the customer is not always right, but that "they must always feel heard." Seiber agreed, but noted "customers are not designers," and while designers need to listen to customer feedback, it is the designer's job to synthesize it. Seiber feels it's the critic's job to point out when something is missing or not well-prioritized. In interaction design, our challenges are quite similar, if not parallel. Software tasks are like puzzles that are in search of a solution on how to be best completed. As a food stylist, Tami Hardeman has the demanding and challenging task of presenting food to be as delectable as can be. To present food in its best light requires a lot of creativity and insight into consumer tastes. It's no doubt then that this former fashion stylist came up with the ultimate catch phrase to capture the emotion that clients want to draw from their users: "craveability." The phrase was a hit with the audience and panelists alike. Sometime later in the discussion, Seiber remarked, "designers strive to apply craveability to products, and I do so for restaurants in my case." Craveabilty is also very applicable to interaction design. Creating straightforward and smooth workflows for users of Oracle Applications is a primary goal for my colleagues. We want our users to really enjoy working with our products where it makes them more efficient and better at their jobs. That's our "craveability." Patanjali Venkatacharya asked the panel, "if a design's "craveability" appeals to some cultures but not to others, then what is the impact to the food or product design process?" Rohn stated that "taste is part nature and part nurture" and that the design must take the full context of a product's usage into consideration. Kessler added, "good design is about understanding the context" that the experience necessitates. Seiber remarked how important seat comfort is for diners and how the quality of seating will add so much to the complete dining experience. Sometimes if these non-food factors are not well executed, they can also take away from an otherwise pleasant dining experience. Kessler recounted a time when he was dining at a restaurant that actually had very good food, but the photographs hanging on all the walls did not fit in with the overall décor and created a negative overall dining experience. While the tastiness of the food is critical to a restaurant's success, it is a captivating complete user experience, as in interaction design, which will keep customers coming back and ultimately making the restaurant a hit. Figure 2. Patanjali Venkatacharya enjoyed the Sardinian flatbread salad. As a surprise Chef Powers brought out a signature dish from Shaun's restaurant for all the panelists to sample and critique. The Sardinian flatbread dish showcased Atlanta's taste for fresh and local produce and cheese at its finest as a salad served on a crispy flavorful flat bread. Hardeman said it could be photographed from any angle, a high compliment coming from a food stylist. Seiber really enjoyed the colors that the dish brought together and thought it would be served very well in a casual restaurant on a summer's day. The panel really appreciated the taste and quality of the different components and how the rosemary brought all the flavors together. Seiber remarked that "a lot of effort goes into the appearance of simplicity." Rohn indicated that the same notion holds true with software user interface design. A tremendous amount of work goes into crafting straightforward interfaces, including user research, prototyping, design iterations, and usability studies. Design criticism for food and software interfaces clearly share many similarities. Both areas value expert opinions and user feedback. Both areas understand the importance of great design needing to work well in its context. Last but not least, both food and interaction design criticism value "craveability" and how having users excited about experiencing and enjoying the designs is an important goal. Now if we can just improve the taste of software user interfaces, people may choose to dine on their enterprise applications over a fresh organic salad.

  • problem processing xml in flex3

    - by john
    Hi All, First time here asking a question and still learning on how to format things better... so sorry about the format as it does not look too well. I have started learning flex and picked up a book and tried to follow the examples in it. However, I got stuck with a problem. I have a jsp page which returns xml which basically have a list of products. I am trying to parse this xml, in other words go through products, and create Objects for each product node and store them in an ArrayCollection. The problem I believe I am having is I am not using the right way of navigating through xml. The xml that is being returned from the server looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?><result type="success"> <products> <product> <id>6</id> <cat>electronics</cat> <name>Plasma Television</name> <desc>65 inch screen with 1080p</desc> <price>$3000.0</price> </product> <product> <id>7</id> <cat>electronics</cat> <name>Surround Sound Stereo</name> <desc>7.1 surround sound receiver with wireless speakers</desc> <price>$1000.0</price> </product> <product> <id>8</id> <cat>appliances</cat> <name>Refrigerator</name> <desc>Bottom drawer freezer with water and ice on the door</desc> <price>$1200.0</price> </product> <product> <id>9</id> <cat>appliances</cat> <name>Dishwasher</name> <desc>Large capacity with water saver setting</desc> <price>$500.0</price> </product> <product> <id>10</id> <cat>furniture</cat> <name>Leather Sectional</name> <desc>Plush leather with room for 6 people</desc> <price>$1500.0</price> </product> </products></result> And I have flex code that tries to iterate over products like following: private function productListHandler(e:JavaFlexStoreEvent):void { productData = new ArrayCollection(); trace(JavaServiceHandler(e.currentTarget).response); for each (var item:XML in JavaServiceHandler(e.currentTarget).response..product ) { productData.addItem( { id:item.id, item:item.name, price:item.price, description:item.desc }); } } with trace, I can see the xml being returned from the server. However, I cannot get inside the loop as if the xml was empty. In other words, JavaServiceHandler(e.currentTarget).response..product must be returning nothing. Can someone please help/point out what I could be doing wrong. My JavaServiceHandler class looks like this: package com.wiley.jfib.store.data { import com.wiley.jfib.store.events.JavaFlexStoreEvent; import flash.events.Event; import flash.events.EventDispatcher; import flash.net.URLLoader; import flash.net.URLRequest; public class JavaServiceHandler extends EventDispatcher { public var serviceURL:String = ""; public var response:XML; public function JavaServiceHandler() { } public function callServer():void { if(serviceURL == "") { throw new Error("serviceURL is a required parameter"); return; } var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(); loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, handleResponse); loader.load(new URLRequest(serviceURL)); // var httpService:HTTPService = new HTTPService(); // httpService.url = serviceURL; // httpService.resultFormat = "e4x"; // httpService.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, handleResponse); // httpService.send(); } private function handleResponse(e:Event):void { var loader:URLLoader = URLLoader(e.currentTarget); response = XML(loader.data); dispatchEvent(new JavaFlexStoreEvent(JavaFlexStoreEvent.DATA_LOADED) ); // var httpService:HTTPService = HTTPService(e.currentTarget); // response = httpService.lastResult.product; // dispatchEvent(new JavaFlexStoreEvent(JavaFlexStoreEvent.DATA_LOADED) ); } } } Even though I refer to this as mine and it is not in reality. This is from a Flex book as a code sample which does not work, go figure. Any help is appreciated. Thanks john

  • Table not Echoing out if another Table has a Zero value

    - by John
    Hello, The table below with mysql_query($sqlStr3) (the one with the word "Joined" in its row) does not echo if the result associated with mysql_query($sqlStr1) has a value of zero. This happens even if mysql_query($sqlStr3) returns a result. In other words, if a given loginid has an entry in the table "login", but not one in the table "submission", then the table associated with mysql_query($sqlStr3) does not echo. I don't understand why the "submission" table would have any effect on mysql_query($sqlStr3), since the $sqlStr3 only deals with another table, called "login", as seen below. Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks in advance, John W. <?php echo '<div class="profilename">User Profile for </div>'; echo '<div class="profilename2">'.$profile.'</div>'; $tzFrom = new DateTimeZone('America/New_York'); $tzTo = new DateTimeZone('America/Phoenix'); $profile = mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['profile']); $sqlStr = "SELECT l.username, l.loginid, s.loginid, s.submissionid, s.title, s.url, s.datesubmitted, s.displayurl FROM submission AS s INNER JOIN login AS l ON s.loginid = l.loginid WHERE l.username = '$profile' ORDER BY s.datesubmitted DESC"; $result = mysql_query($sqlStr); $arr = array(); echo "<table class=\"samplesrec1\">"; while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $dt = new DateTime($row["datesubmitted"], $tzFrom); $dt->setTimezone($tzTo); echo '<tr>'; echo '<td class="sitename3">'.$dt->format('F j, Y &\nb\sp &\nb\sp g:i a').'</a></td>'; echo '<td class="sitename1"><a href="http://www.'.$row["url"].'">'.$row["title"].'</a></td>'; echo '</tr>'; } echo "</table>"; $sqlStr1 = "SELECT l.username, l.loginid, s.loginid, s.submissionid, s.title, s.url, s.datesubmitted, s.displayurl, l.created, count(s.submissionid) countSubmissions FROM submission AS s INNER JOIN login AS l ON s.loginid = l.loginid WHERE l.username = '$profile'"; $result1 = mysql_query($sqlStr1); $arr1 = array(); echo "<table class=\"samplesrec2\">"; while ($row1 = mysql_fetch_array($result1)) { echo '<tr>'; echo '<td class="sitename5">Submissions: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;'.$row1["countSubmissions"].'</td>'; echo '</tr>'; } echo "</table>"; $sqlStr2 = "SELECT l.username, l.loginid, c.loginid, c.commentid, c.submissionid, c.comment, c.datecommented, l.created, count(c.commentid) countComments FROM comment AS c INNER JOIN login AS l ON c.loginid = l.loginid WHERE l.username = '$profile'"; $result2 = mysql_query($sqlStr2); $arr2 = array(); echo "<table class=\"samplesrec3\">"; while ($row2 = mysql_fetch_array($result2)) { echo '<tr>'; echo '<td class="sitename5">Comments: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;'.$row2["countComments"].'</td>'; echo '</tr>'; } echo "</table>"; $tzFrom3 = new DateTimeZone('America/New_York'); $tzTo3 = new DateTimeZone('America/Phoenix'); $sqlStr3 = "SELECT created, username FROM login WHERE username = '$profile'"; $result3 = mysql_query($sqlStr3); $arr3 = array(); echo "<table class=\"samplesrec4\">"; while ($row3 = mysql_fetch_array($result3)) { $dt3 = new DateTime($row3["created"], $tzFrom3); $dt3->setTimezone($tzTo3); echo '<tr>'; echo '<td class="sitename5">Joined: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;'.$dt->format('F j, Y').'</td>'; echo '</tr>'; } echo "</table>"; ?> </body> </html>

  • SQLAuthority News – Who I Am And How I Got Here – True Story as Blog Post

    - by pinaldave
    Here are few of the sample questions I get every day? “Give me shortcut to become superstar?” “How do I become like you?” “Which book I should read so I know everything?” “Can you share your secret to be successful? I want to know it but do not share with others.” There is generic answer I always give is to work hard and read good educational material or watch good online videos. One of the emails really caught my attention. It was from a friend and SQL Server Expert John Sansom (Blog | Twitter). He wrote if I would like to share my story with the world about “Who I am and How I got Here”. I was very much intrigued with his suggestion. John is one guy I respect a lot. Every single topic he writes, I read it with dedication. I eagerly wait for his Weekly Summary of Best SQL Links. If you have not read them, you are missing something out. Writing a guest post for him was like walking in memory lane. I remembered the time when I was beginning my career and I was bit overconfident and bit naive. I had my share of mistakes when I started my career. As time passed by I realize the truth. Well, we all do mistakes. Though, I am proud that as soon as I know my mistakes I corrected them. I never acted on impulse or when I am angry. I think that alone has helped me analysis the situation better and become better human being. During the course, I have lost my ego and it is replaced by passion. I am much more happy and successful in my work. Quite often people ask me if I am always online and wether I have family or not. Honestly, I am able to work hard because of my family. They support me and they encourage me to be enjoy in what I do. They support everything I do and personally, I do not miss a single occasion to join them in daily chores of fun. If there was a shortcut to success – I want know. I learnt SQL Server hard way and I am still learning. There are so many things, I have to learn. There is not enough time to learn everything which we want to learn. I am constantly working on it every day. I welcome you to join my journey as well. Please join me with my journey to learn SQL Server – more the merrier. I have written a story of my life as a guest post.  Read Here: A Journey to SQL Authority Special thanks to John Sansom (Blog | Twitter) for giving me space to talk my story. Indeed I am honored. • WebLogic Server–Use the Execution Context ID in Applications–Lessons From Hansel and Gretel

    - by james.bayer
    I learned a neat trick this week.  Don’t let your breadcrumbs go to waste like Hansel and Gretel did!  Keep track of the code path, logs and errors for each request as they flow through the system.  Earlier this week an OTN forum post in the WLS – General category by Oracle Ace John Stegeman asked a question how to retrieve the Execution Context ID so that it could be used on an error page that a user could provide to a help desk or use to check with application administrators so they could look up what went wrong.  What is the Execution Context ID (ECID)?  Fusion Middleware injects an ECID as a request enters the system and it says with the request as it flows from Oracle HTTP Server to Oracle Web Cache to multiple WebLogic Servers to the Oracle Database. It’s a way to uniquely identify a request across tiers.  According to the documentation it’s: The value of the ECID is a unique identifier that can be used to correlate individual events as being part of the same request execution flow. For example, events that are identified as being related to a particular request typically have the same ECID value.  The format of the ECID string itself is determined by an internal mechanism that is subject to change; therefore, you should not have or place any dependencies on that format. The novel idea that I see John had was to extend this concept beyond the diagnostic information that is captured by Fusion Middleware.  Why not also use this identifier in your logs and errors so you can correlate even more information together!  Your logging might already identify the user, so why not identify the request so you filter down even more.  All you need to do inside of WebLogic Server to get ahold of this information is invoke DiagnosticConextHelper: weblogic.diagnostics.context.DiagnosticContextHelper.getContextId() This class has other helpful methods to see other values tracked by the diagnostics framework too.  This way I can see even more detail and get information across tiers. In performance profiling, this can be very handy to track down where time is being spent in code.  I’ve blogged and made videos about this before.  JRockit Flight Recorder can use the WLDF Diagnostic Volume in WLS 10.3.3+ to automatically capture and correlate lots of helpful information for each request without installing any special agents and with the out-of-the-box JRockit and WLS settings!  You can see here how information is displayed in JRockit Flight Recorder about a single request as it calls a Servlet, which calls an EJB, which gets a DB connection, which starts a transaction, etc.  You can get timings around everything and even see the SQL that is used. http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E21764_01/web.1111/e13714/using_flightrecorder.htm#WLDFC480 Recent versions of the WLS console also are able to visualize this data too, so it works with other JVMs besides JRockit when you turn on WLDF instrumentation. I wrote a little sample application that verified to myself that the ECID did actually cross JVM boundaries.  I invoked a Servlet in one JVM, which acted as an EJB client to Stateless Session Bean running in another JVM.  Each call returned the same ECID.  You need to turn on WLDF Instrumentation for this to work otherwise the framework returns null.  I’m glad John put me on to this API as I have some interesting ideas on how to correlate some information together.

  • Postback problem when using URL Rewrite and 404.aspx

    - by salle55
    I'm using URL rewrite on my site to get URLs like: http://mysite.com/users/john instead of http://mysite.com/index.aspx?user=john To achive this extensionless rewrite with IIS6 and no access to the hosting-server I use the "404-approach". When a request that the server can't find, the mapped 404-page is executed, since this is a aspx-page the rewrite can be performed (I can setup the 404-mapping using the controlpanel on the hosting-service). This is the code in Global.asax: protected void Application_BeginRequest(object sender, EventArgs e) { string url = HttpContext.Current.Request.Url.AbsolutePath; if (url.Contains("404.aspx")) { string[] urlInfo404 = Request.Url.Query.ToString().Split(';'); if (urlInfo404.Length > 1) { string requestURL = urlInfo404[1]; if (requestURL.Contains("/users/")) { HttpContext.Current.RewritePath("~/index.aspx?user=" + GetPageID(requestURL)); StoreRequestURL(requestURL); } else if (requestURL.Contains("/picture/")) { HttpContext.Current.RewritePath("~/showPicture.aspx?pictureID=" + GetPageID(requestURL)); StoreRequestURL(requestURL); } } } } private void StoreRequestURL(string url) { url = url.Replace("http://", ""); url = url.Substring(url.IndexOf("/")); HttpContext.Current.Items["VirtualUrl"] = url; } private string GetPageID(string requestURL) { int idx = requestURL.LastIndexOf("/"); string id = requestURL.Substring(idx + 1); id = id.Replace(".aspx", ""); //Only needed when testing without the 404-approach return id; } And in Page_Load on my masterpage I set the correct URL in the action-attribute on the form-tag. protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { string virtualURL = (string)HttpContext.Current.Items["VirtualUrl"]; if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(virtualURL)) { form1.Action = virtualURL; } } The rewrite works fine but when I perform a postback on the page the postback isn't executed, can this be solved somehow? The problem seems to be with the 404-approach because when I try without it (and loses the extensionless-feature) the postback works. That is when I request: http://mysite.com/users/john.aspx Can this be solved or is there any other solution that fulfil my requirements (IIS6, no serveraccess/ISAPI-filter and extensionless).

  • Filter rows on the basis of "First Name" + "Last Name" in SQL

    - by Raghav Khunger
    Hi, I have a user table in my database which contains two columns FirstName and LastName. Now in my front end there is a textbox to filter out the users from this table. Let's suppose I am taking that input from the front end in the form of a input parameter "@SEARCHKEYWORD". I have created a sample below: DECLARE @Test TABLE ([ID] INT IDENTITY, [FNAME] NVARCHAR(100), [LNAME] NVARCHAR(100) ) INSERT INTO @Test( FNAME, LNAME ) SELECT 'John','Resig' UNION ALL SELECT 'Dave','Ward' UNION ALL SELECT 'Peter','Smith' UNION ALL SELECT 'Dave','Smith' UNION ALL SELECT 'Girija','Acharya' UNION ALL SELECT 'Devendra', 'Gujel' UNION ALL SELECT 'Arjit', 'Gupta' DECLARE @SEARCHKEYWORD NVARCHAR(100) SELECT * FROM @Test WHERE FNAME +' '+ LNAME LIKE @SEARCHKEYWORD i.e. so far I have thought of this query to filter out the rows but it is not giving the desired results: SELECT * FROM @Test WHERE FNAME +' '+ LNAME LIKE @SEARCHKEYWORD Here are the desired outputs which I needed for the inputs mentioned below: --WHEN @SEARCHKEYWORD='John Resig' --Desired OUTPUT: the row which contains 'John','Resig' --WHEN @SEARCHKEYWORD='Ac' --Desired OUTPUT: the row which contains 'Girija','Acharya' --WHEN @SEARCHKEYWORD='Smith' --Desired OUTPUT: the row which contains 'Peter','Smith' and 'Dave','Smith' --WHEN @SEARCHKEYWORD='g' --Desired OUTPUT: the row which contains 'Devendra', 'Gujel' and 'Arjit', 'Gupta' --WHEN @SEARCHKEYWORD='Smith' --Desired OUTPUT: the row which contains 'Peter','Smith' and 'Dave','Smith'

  • ASP.NET Ajax - Asynch request has separate session???

    - by Marcus King
    We are writing a search application that saves the search criteria to session state and executes the search inside of an asp.net updatepanel. Sometimes when we execute multiple searches successively the 2nd or 3rd search will sometimes return results from the first set of search criteria. Example: our first search we do a look up on "John Smith" - John Smith results are displayed. The second search we do a look up on "Bob Jones" - John Smith results are displayed. We save all of the search criteria in session state as I said, and read it from session state inside of the ajax request to format the DB query. When we put break points in VS everything behaves as normal, but without them we get the original search criteria and results. My guess is because they are saved in session, that the ajax request somehow gets its own session and saves the criteria to that, and then retrieves the criteria from that session every time, but the non-async stuff is able to see when the criteria is modified and saves the changes to state accordingly, but because they are from two different sessions there is a disparity in what is saved and read. EDIT::: To elaborate more, there was a suggestion of appending the search criteria to the query string which normally is good practice and I agree thats how it should be but following our requirements I don't see it as being viable. They want it so the user fills out the input controls hits search and there is no page reload, the only thing they see is a progress indicator on the page, and they still have the ability to navigate and use other features on the current page. If I were to add criteria to the query string I would have to do another request causing the whole page to load, which depending on the search criteria can take a really long time. This is why we are using an ajax call to perform the search and why we aren't causing another full page request..... I hope this clarifies the situation.

  • String parsing help

    - by Click Upvote
    I have a string like the following: $string = " <paragraph>apples are red...</paragraph> <paragraph>john is a boy..</paragraph> <paragraph>this is dummy text......</paragraph> "; I would like to split this string into an array contanining the text found between the <paragraph></paragraph> tags. E.g something like this: $string = " <paragraph>apples are red...</paragraph> <paragraph>john is a boy..</paragraph> <paragraph>this is dummy text......</paragraph> "; $paragraphs = splitParagraphs($string); /* $paragraphs now contains: $paragraphs[0] = apples are red... $paragraphs[1] = john is a boy... $paragraphs[1] = this is dummy text... */ Any ideas? P.S it should be case insensitive, <paragraph>, <PARAGRAPH>, <Paragraph> should all be treated the same way.
