  • What server setup for a small web development company? [closed]

    I co-own a company with a friend of mine and we have decided to buy a new server to support our business (our current server is an Asus EEE Box, working great but too limited :) ). I should mention that we are web developers but occasionally we do small-office sys admin. Thus, 99% of time we work on GNU/Linux (mainly Ubuntu) but from time to time we need to setup a Windows environment to assist some customers (e.g. setup a temporary SQL Server 2008). Our requirements: Low budget: we don't want the cheapest solution out there but we can't afford to spend too much. Budget could be ~1000-1500€ (before VAT) Robustness: we would like to setup a RAID array and maybe have an external disk where we can store backups Virtualization: we need to be able to setup few servers for development. The scenario is something like this (~8 appliances running in parallel): Redmine + GIT server Bacula server FTP server 3-4 virtual appliances that could be set up on demand to test our applications or support a customer. The appliances could be: LAMP, Tomcat+PostgreSQL, SQL Server Support: if something breaks down it shouldn't be too difficult to find a replacement. Now, given the main requirements, there are some doubts we need to clarify: Do you suggest to buy a prepackaged solution (for example a customized Dell PowerEdge T110 or T310) or to assemble the server by ourselves (buy the separate components)? What RAID configuration do you suggest? I was thinking of RAID1 (probably cheaper) or RAID5. should we buy a hardware RAID controller or is it ok to use a software RAID (mdadm)? In case, which controller do you suggest? What processor do you suggest (Intel Xeon, i3, i5, i7, AMD)? How much RAM? (I was thinking at least 8GB, ~1GB per appliance) What virtualization software do you recommend? VMWare seems to be the best choice, but what about XEN or KVM? We don't want to buy licenses at the moment so we would like to consider only free options. What OS do you recommend? We know Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo very well (we would like to use Ubuntu Server), however it seems a lot of people goes for CentOS. Thanks in advance if you can help us with this!   • Using local configs in a Heroku deployment environment

    I'm trying to migrate my app to Heroku - I have a config file that varies with development/staging/production environments as it contains uniquely assigned keys (from Facebook, S3, etc.), so I keep it out of the repository and keep the configs local. As such I'm trying to find a solution for Heroku to have that config file since Heroku deploys from the repository. I noticed Heroku deploys from the master branch - can it deploy from another branch? Because then I could commit the Heroku configs there, and have it not overwrite the other environments' configs every time it pulls. Thanks!

  • Using WPF controls in a background or ASP.Net environment

    Hi, I have noticed that some WPF controls have some decent effects available to them (drop shadow, reflection etc), and was wondering if it was possible to use these WPF controls solely for their available effects? For example, I have an image manipulation library that resizes and letterboxes disparate sized images but I would like to add drop shadow effects to the resulting images. The WPF image control has this effect available, but how easy is it to use in an environment where there will never be a GUI (console app or ASP.Net library/handler for example). Thoughts?   • Convert Environment.OSVersion to NTDDI version format

    In sdkddkver.h of the Windows Platform SDK, there are various OS versions defined as NTDDI_*. For example, Windows XP and its service packs are defined as: #define NTDDI_WINXP 0x05010000 #define NTDDI_WINXPSP1 0x05010100 #define NTDDI_WINXPSP2 0x05010200 #define NTDDI_WINXPSP3 0x05010300 #define NTDDI_WINXPSP4 0x05010400 There are also masks which, along with the OSVER, SPVER, and SUBVER macros, allow you to pull the respective parts out of the NTDDI version. #define OSVERSION_MASK 0xFFFF0000 #define SPVERSION_MASK 0x0000FF00 #define SUBVERSION_MASK 0x000000FF I have all of these defined as constants in C# and what I'd like to do now is convert the data returned by Environment.OSVersion to a value corresponding to one of the NTDDI versions in sdkddkver.h. I could make a massive switch statement, but that's not really as future-proof as I'd like it to be. I would need to update the conversion method every time a new OS or service pack is released. I have a feeling this could be done with the help of some bitwise operators, but I'll be honest and say that those aren't my strong point. I appreciate any help!

  • Redmon's Run As User not loading user's enviroment variables

    I'm attempting to use Redmon http://www.winimage.com/misc/redmon/ to send print jobs to a custom C# application. Redmon "runs" (actually the Print Spooler) as SYSTEM but has an option to Run As User to allow your application to run under the user that printed the job. The problem is that it doesn't appear to load the user's environment. So calling functions like Path.GetTempPath() points to \windows\temp instead of the user's. Also when attempting to run Outlook 2007+ via MAPI calls (to add attachments) it reports form errors due to, I think, the temp folder location. Is there a way to "reload" a profile or atleast get your environment vars within the Impersonated application? The only ideas I've had so far is to rebuild the vars directly from the registry, but I want to avoid this since it's a hack around (avoiding implementation details and all that). Or making a stub program that Redmon calls which then properly Run As User with full profile the custom application. Any other items or tricks?

  • Creating a UAC like environment

    I want to create an environment like UAC. i.e. my dialog should appear to the user and unless he responds to it, i want to disable the background. User should not be able to carry out any activity. For this purpose I created a new desktop and display my dialog on the new desktop. But i want something like UAC where the background seems disabled (or transparent??). Does anyone know how to go about it? Thanks Rohit

  • Jax-ws 2.2 or Metro as Tomcat runtime environment

    I need an implementation of JAX-WS, that is RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT to use a client for Tomcat6. Which is better in your opinion? JAX-WS 2.2 https://jax-ws.dev.java.net/2.2/ Metro 2.0 https://metro.dev.java.net/2.0/ They have different installation procedures and different jars. For now I only need to be able to run a client from under Tomcat6 web apps. But later I'm planning to use ApacheCXF soap web-service, that will run on this Tomcat. As I understand, CXF is a unique implementation that does not any of mentioned runtime environments, so I guess whatever between metro & jax-ws2.2 I choose does not matter, right? Still, which one do you recommend?

  • Is AsParallel() good practice in a web environment?

    I have no doubt that for client applications, AsParallel() will bring some out-of-the-box performance gains. But what if I would use it in a web environment. Let's say I have a widget framework that loops over all widgets to get their data and render output. This would parallelize great no? I do have my doubts on using AsParallel() in this scenario. What if I have a large number of visitors for my site, isn't IIS going to use multiple threads to handle all requests? Aren't there going to be locking issues presented after a while, or threads dying because all processors are in use? It's just a thought, what do you think about this?

  • Django on Dreamhost - testing/sand box environment

    I've been using webfaction for all my django needs for the last couple of years but have had a high traffic site fall in my lap that dreamhost are probably better suited to handling. To set up and experiment with a site with webfaction there are your [user].webfactional.com accounts. Which is sweet. Equivalently Dreamhost also offers [name].dreamhosters.com Yet this doesn't seem to work with my database and this doesn't seem to be playing nice with setting up django or passenger_wsgi. So I'm wondering if I'm interpreting the documentation correctly to suggest that in order to make a site that depends on passenger it needs to be running from an active domain. The documentation is really implicit, I'm baffled. Has anyone set up a testing/sand box environment for django using dreamhost, or know how to?

  • Ipad, closed environment and threat to privacy

    I had an unusual question about ipad, Since ipad environment is closed and does not allows installation of diagnostic and security related programs. How can then we be sure that any of the software installed on ipad is not infringing upon our privacy by doing stuff such as homing back information, etc. We cant install a packet tracer or any other software to check for attacks on privacy. Also given Apples poor track record (the safari browser was broken in one day), I don't think trusting apple solely would be a good idea. This might not seem to be a big issue but for business users it would be a significant concern.

    Hi, While playing with RubyCocoa, I keep progressing with my idea for my application. Because my application will be going to use configuration files, I would like to know how I discover the relative path to store these inside my application structure (or if a better idea emerges, please elaborate also the "why"). Also good for me to know is to discover environment variables, such as operating system version, the amount of memory that is available and such. Hyperlinks would be awesome too.     Hello, I am trying to execute unix command using SSH from cygwin. My set of command would navigate to a certain directory, source a particular file. Based on the variables sourced from that file, I would try to launch application. But somehow the variables are not getting sourced as echo does not return any values.   • What's the diffrence btw System property and system environment variable

    Hi all I am not clear about this. When I run a java App or run an Applet in applet viewer,( in the IDE environment), System.getProperty("java.class.path") give me the same as System.getenv("CLASSPATH"), which is the CLASSPATH env variable defined. But when I deploy my applet to webserver and access it from the same computer as a client, I get different result for the two (System.getProperty("java.class.path") only point to jre home and System.getenv("CLASSPATH") return null). And here is some other things that make me wonder: For the applet part, the env var JAVA_HOME, i get the same result when deploying the applet in a browser as well as Applet Viewer. And if I define myself a env variable at system level, and use getenv("envName") the result is null. Is there anyway I can define one and get it in my java program? Thanks a lot Regards K.

Or do you test it more frequently that you don't need such a cycle and your software is always ready for public release?

    Hi, I am supposed to create a simple replicated cache using java for internal purpose which will be used in a distributed environment. I have seen oracle has implemented Replicated Cache Service. http://wiki.tangosol.com/display/COH32UG/Replicated+Cache+Service The problem I am facing is while doing an update or remove, I acquire lock on other cache's to the point the cache get's updated and notifies others of the change. This is eventually going into a dead lock situation, while removing. Is there any strategy I should follow while updating or removing from cache's.   • application trying to connect to mirrored sql db

    Hello, We have 4 web servers that host our asp.net (3.5) application. Randomly, we get error messages like : 1) "Login failed for user 'userid'" 2) "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)" we are running sql2005 and have a principle and a mirror db (sync). When these exceptions are thrown, I look at the SQL error logs on the mirrored db and noticed the failed login messages in there. The principle db is running fine and the other web apps are working great. this will happen for maybe 10 min, then the app pool recycles and it starts hitting the principle db again. Is there a configuration I have incorrect? my theory is that our principle db is forwarding the request to the mirror, but that should never happen. any help??

  • Corporate Environment [closed]

    How do you guys live in corporate environment? Especially talk to each other (developer to developer). I find it extremely hard as any question goes to "please book a meeting for that". Sometimes I get a chance to ask sb sth on the kitchen but that's it. Booked meetings are just stupidest thing ever, 'cos people talk about nothing specific and you have to wait days for them to happen. Weekly "scrums" are even more stupid as they usually take about 10 mins and you could do the same in 1 minute by email, no useful info or communication et all. All that leads to zero understanding of the product, no connection to customers, development in own isolated cubible, throwing out most of your code because that's not what was needed and you never know what the product is really aimed to do. Sad :(

  • Practical Python-based visual programming environment?

    I am looking for a practical visual programming environment based on Python. My primary application is algorithm development for processing remote-sensing imagery. I was initially inspired by LabVIEW from National Instruments, but that is more geared towards laboratory measurements and simulations. I write a lot of prototype code in Python and do a lot of interactive analysis with IPython. Does there exist a visual framework where a "program" is represented by connected nodes which each read data, do some work, and output data to the next node? I would like to use Python to write the code residing in each node. So far the best I've seen is Orange http://www.ailab.si/orange/, but it does not have the ability to start/stop individual nodes.

  • Ant Exec environment var

    I have a problem where I don't want to have to call a setEnv.sh file before i call my ant target that calls an exec task. Right now I have a way to save the environment variables in setenv.properties file in the key=value notation. The exec task for some reason does not see the variables that are set in the .properties file.... (I know i could use the tag but the setenv.properties is dynamically generated) setenv.properties: HELLO=XYZ part of my build.xml : <property file="setenv.properties"/> <target name="test" depends="setEnv"> <exec executable="/bin/ksh" newenvironment="false"> test.sh : echo ${HELLO} Any thoughts?
