• Wallpaper in Windows 7 locked down by domain group policy?

  So I am in a situation where my wallpaper is locked to a specific image on my work computer via group policy. I can't change it via the Personalization settings since it is grayed out and says it has been set by the system administrator. Anyone know some local GPO and/or registry hackery I can do to override the domain's policy? I could probably get away with logging in under a local account for this, but I want that to be a last resort. Thanks in advance.

• How to set start screen tiles' language in Windows 8

  I've installed English Windows 8 x64 on my notebook and selected Slovenian as locale during installation. The problem I'm having now is that my tiles on start screen display in Slovenian even though my installation is English. I've also edited languages, adding English (British) on the list and putting it on top of Slovenian, but tiles still use Slovenian... All previous Windows versions were able to have English UI with a particular locale for input, time, dates, currency etc. How can I do the same in Windows 8?

  I have Thunderbird set up to auto-bcc my account for all emails, and disabled the 'Sent' folder. Unfortunately if I'm in an email threads and Reply to all I get double-copied: once by Reply to all; once bt auto-bcc. Are there any workarounds for this?

• Mirroring a drive in Debian

  I have a drive with data on it. I dont want to use RAID, instead I want to do hourly backups to a second drive. I basically want to mirror the data drive and resync every hour. It is inefficient to re-move the data each time so really I only want to move across what changes. I.e if I add a new file to the data drive only that file will be moved across. What tools are there for doing this on the command line? I used to use luckybackup on Ubuntu but now im on commandline debian.

  I have an active application (lets say an instant messaging client) whose buddy list I have up (active) on one side of my screen at all times in Windows 7. I would like to remove that icon from the taskbar either by moving it to the system tray (as happens when the app is minimized) or by just removing it altogether. To be clear: I do not want to minimize the window to the system tray (as described in Windows app to hide application from taskbar) I want to keep the window its NORMAL size and location and just get rid of the taskbar icon for the app. I'm looking for any tool, third party, native, registry hack, to accomplish this.

  I am using the RasDial function on a Windows box (Windows Server 2008) to dial a device from which the server then reads data. It seems that some new routes are added to the network routing table when the dial-up connection is made. That interferes with other network interfaces on the server. In particular, RasDial adds a default route which routes traffic to the device, which makes the server unreachable until the connection is dropped. Is there a way to control which routes are added by RasDial? I have been studying Microsoft's document for RasDial and associated items (RASDIALPARAMS, RASDIALEXTENSIONS) without finding anything about routing. There is an option for "Use default gateway on remote network" when configuring a VPN, but I don't see how to apply that in this case. Thanks for any light you can shed on this problem.

  Which Windows 8 tool should I use to "read", "upload", my Windows 7 latest backup DVD (is it possible?). I've just installed W8 and haven't made any changes to my new ecosystem and, what happened was that, as I was managing my new drivers, some mess* occurred, I confess, and now what I have left is every single backup tool I made use of W7, like system images, restore dvds, backup up to date monthly and so on, and would like to keep in touch with W8. I'm one of those with problems managing the amd switchable gpu drivers. Now I want to stay with W8 (download version - didn't clean install) but with my old personal files. I don't care to programs updates. I got everything original on dvds, of my interest. Yesterday I tried refreshing W8 once but didn't work. Maybe trying again tonight. What would you guys do in my place, please? *the mess I am talking about is to have disabled my intel (the only driver left) gpu in device manager tool in W8. I got black screen on system boot.   On the page http://qxlapps.dk/test.htm I am trying to perform an Ajax load from another domain, qxlapp.dk. I am using James Padolsey's xdomainajax.js plugin from: http://james.padolsey.com/javascript/cross-domain-requests-with-jquery/ When I open my test page, I get no output, but FireBug shows the JSON result, including the error message: "forbidden":"robots.txt for the domain disallows crawling for url: http://qxlapp.dk/projects/dagens_kup/show.php". The robots.txt on the qxlapp.dk domain contains the following: User-agent: Yahoo Pipes 2.0 Allow: / User-agent: * Allow: / So I don't see what the problem is? Shouldn't it pull the page just fine with those settings?

  I have a table (say "Demographics") on SQL Server. In this table are the following columns "LastName", "FirstName", "MiddleName", "Prefix" , "Suffix". I have one textbox to search for them on a webpage. My question: Whats a good design strategy for queries where the user could be searching for various combinations of names including last names that have spaces e.g. "Smith James Jr." . Our customers store Jr. sometimes in suffix and sometimes just tack it to lastname. Sometimes Smith James Jr could be the entire last name.

• VSS to TFS Migration - Persist User on check-in actions

  I am using the VSSConveter.exe tool to import from VSS6 (using 2005 ide) to TFS2008. I have run analyze (no errors) and migrate WITH a user mapping file (containg the vss/domain user mappings) I would like to persist in tfs the check-in user of the file, currently the check-in user for all versions of file shows as admin (the account im running the import with), the origional check-in user is appended to the check-in comment. For example:- TestFile.aspx in VSS Check in ver: 1 - User:Adam - Comment:TEST1 Check in ver: 2 - User:James - Comment:TEST2 Check in ver: 3 - User:Joel - Comment:TEST2 After import into TFS Check in ver: 1 - User:mydomain\Admin - Comment:TEST1 (Commited by Adam) Check in ver: 2 - User:mydomain\Admin - Comment:TEST2 (Commited by James) Check in ver: 3 - User:mydomain\Admin - Comment:TEST2 (Commited by Joel) In TFS I want the user to show as the correct domain user as configured in my user mapping file. Is this possible, or is this just how the VSSConverter program works?

  I am working through the Django RSS reader project here. The RSS feed will read something like "OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — James Harden let". The RSS feed's encoding reads encoding="UTF-8" so I believe I am passing utf-8 to markdown in the code snippet below. The em dash is where it chokes. I get the Django error of "'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\u2014' in position 109: ordinal not in range(128)" which is an UnicodeEncodeError. In the variables being passed I see "OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) \u2014 James Harden". The code line that is not working is: content = content.encode(parsed_feed.encoding, "xmlcharrefreplace") I am using markdown 2.0, django 1.1, and python 2.4. What is the magic sequence of encoding and decoding that I need to do to make this work? Thanks.

• how does fgets internally works?

  Well it is a basic question but I seem confused enough. #include<stdio.h> int main() { char a[100]; printf("Enter a string\n"); scanf("%s",a); } Basically the above is what I want to achieve. If I enter a string James Bond then I want that to be stored in array a. But the problem is because of presence of a blank space in between only James word is stored. So how can I solve this one. UPDATE After the replies given below I understand fgets() would be a better choice. I want to know internal working of fgets as why is it able to store the string with space where as scanf is not able to do the same.

  I am trying to use the following code to pass information to another site but it keeps giving me an error: Invalid Code: $a = $b->doIt("James",$_SESSION['JNum'],"Frank"); Valid Sample Code: $a = $b->doIt("James","123456","Frank"); In the first example, the page returns "number field is required". The second piece of sample code returns valid results. Do to the nature of this project though I need to pass the id number as they are stored in SESSION variables. What am I missing?

I am using the Codeigniter framework but I am not sure if the problem lies there. Also using %20 or just a space in the url bar produces no different results.   For example, i have a column named EmployeeName. Every time a user changes/fix his name, i need to keep a count. If he changes his name twice, then count is 2. Also, i need to store the time of every change employee makes on EmployeeName e.g. if the name essentially is James and time created is 9:00 AM and then employee changes to John on 11:00 AM, i need to preserve this new time and new value as well as the previous one which is James at 9:00 AM.   I have some text; I want to extract pairs of words that are not separated by punctuation.
