• Keyboard Bug or feature on Ubuntu on a MAC?

  I have ubuntu 10.04 on my mac, and i have realized that when i pluged in an USB keyboard (PC) and turn on the numeric keypad if then i removed the keyboard, the keyboard on the mac (this sounds odd, not english spoken person sorry) is completely lost. Let me try to explain, when removing the USB keyboard with the numeric keypad activated, the built in mac keyboard is mapped like a numeric keyboard ONLY, j=1 k=2 l=3 u=4 ... and so on, and the others keys doesnt work, and the only way to restore normal behaviour is connecting the USB keyboard and turn off from there the numeric keypad, and then removing the usb. Is this behaviour ok? Is this a feature or a bug? Macbook 4.1 regards

• Prevent nautilus showing partition mounted in bash script

  In my bash script I mount partitions, check them, copy files to them, and unmount. When the script mounts the partition, Nautilus pops up with a Window showing the partition and stealing focus. This is something I want to avoid. Note: I know I can change the behaviour of this in System settings, Details, Removable media, Never prompt or start programs on media insertion, but I don't want to change the behaviour e.g. if a USB stick is plugged in, I just want to prevent it in my bash script. Actually this auto display doesn't seem consistent. If I do the exact same command from the terminal, Nautilus doesn't show, and I know there are other mounts in my script that don't show. • Why not AJAX'ify entire websites?

  Is there any solid reasoning as to why sites shouldn't be developed with ajax functionality that loads major parts of each part (assuming there are elements like the header, navigation etc that remain the same)? Surely it would be less resource-intensive since the server wouldn't have to serve content that appears on every page, benefiting both the host and end-user. Answer the question taking into consideration: The sites javascript behaviour degrades gracefully in every instance For my question I'm talking about new sites where this behaviour could be implemented rather from the off, so it doesn't technically cost any money - we're not returning to a finished product to implement it.

• How to specify which keys CapsLock affects?

  Using Maverick, I am not able to get the CapsLock behaviour I want: I would like it to affect essentially the alphabetical, numerical, and punctuation keys, i.e. all the keys that print something (as opposed to, say, the error keys), but only them. To illuminate this with an example: when writing code that uses % as the symbol for a comment, I want to be able to position the cursor at the start of a range of lines I want to comment out, then hit CapsLock, then iteratively hit the 5 key (using QWERTZ, Shift+5 gives %) and the arrow down key, so that I can quickly place a % at the start of the lines. Ubuntu in default configuration takes CapsLock literally, so that it affects only alphabetic keys. Under Preferences/Keyboard/Layout/Options I can make it act as a pressed Shift, but then the action of the arrow keys is to select text. All the other options available are equivalent to one of these two in my case. Is it possible to somehow get this behaviour? This is standard in Windows.

  I have Ubuntu 11.10 and for no apparent reason my sidebar suddenly will not hide, I did not go into system settings or anything like that. I googled this, but everything I found had me downloading something to be able to fix it. However, as it changed without me downloading anything, I'm hoping it's possible to change it back without downloading anything. I read somewhere that I should go into "System setting", "appearance", "behaviour" and change it to "auto-hide", but I did not have a "behaviour" tab in "appearance". I would normally be able to just deal with it, but it is preventing me from being able to click the "back" button when I am in a browser. Does anyone

  Recently I have read interesting slides about game object design written by Marcin Chady Theory and Practice of the Game Object Component Architecture. I have prototyped quick sample that utilize all Attributes\Behaviour idea with some sample data. Now I have faced a little problem when I added a RenderingSystem to my prototype application. I have created an object with RenderBehaviour which listens for messages (OnMessage function) like MovedObject in order to mark them as invalid and in OnUpdate pass I am inserting a new renderable object to rederer queue. I have noticed that rendering updates should be the last thing made in single frame and this causes RenderBehaviour to depend on any other Behaviour that changes object position (i.ex. PhysicsSystem and PhysicsBehaviour). I am not even sure if I am doing this the way it should be. Do you have any clues that might put me on the right track?

  I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and I found a weird behaviour in the multi-workspace management. Let's say that I have a couple of terminals opened in one workspace, and that I want to do something else in another workspace. I move to that workspace and then I click on the terminal icon. Immediately I am taken to the initial workspace. This is similar to the multiple workspace behaviour in Os X and it is entirely undesirable. How can I disable the application-workspace association in 12.04? Thanks

• Is regularly hiring and making permanent staff redundant normal? [on hold]

  Is a cycle of hiring permanent staff and then making them redundant after 1-2 years due to 're-alignment of business goals' / 'changes in priorities' normal in the technology industry? This behaviour hardly seems justifiable, and here in the UK it is questionable whether it is even legal. I begin to wonder whether some of this behaviour I have seen in this economy is due to the companies involved not wanting to pay premium rates for contractors (who I must admit in my opinion often offer no more value), and using 'redundancy' e.g. "sorry joe, you're not needed any more", as a convenient way of recreating the contracting scenario. It seems in this situation if you're a valued developer your job probably is never at risk, but I can understand it being a worry for people and I don't think it is fair on those who are mislead into thinking that they have a longer term career with the companies which do this.

  Hello! I have an old machine, and I want to use for that to learn employees how to use Ubuntu, and to be easyer to switch from Windows. I've been installed 10.04, and updated, but this strange stuff is happend. Graphical installion failed, same strange thing. With alternate workd. Sometimes, when I boot up, a boot message displayed: Keyboard failure..., often diplayed after reboot, and after shutdown, when I haven't plugged off from AC. I replaced the keyboard yet, same failure... If I powered off, and plugged off from AC, no keyboard problems displayed in boot time. Details Configuration: Dell OptiPlex GX60 - in original cover, no changes. 256 MB DDR 166 MHz Intel® Celeron® Processor 2.40 GHz Dell 0C3207 Base Board I know, that is not enough, but I have three other Nec compuers, with nearly similar config, and they works well with 9.10, 10.04, 10.10. Live CDs I've been tried with 10.04 and 10.10, but the problem is displayed too. With 9.10 no strange things displayed, but it froze, during a simple apt-get install. Syslog An error loop is logged here, but I paste the whole startup and error lines. The flashing lines are displayed sometimes immediately after login, but sometimes after 10 minutes, but once occured, that nothing happend. Strange thing is displayed immediately after login: here. • memory tuning with rails/unicorn running on ubuntu

  I am running unicorn on Ubuntu 11, Rails 3.0, and Ruby 1.8.7. It is an 8 core ec2 box, and I am running 15 workers. CPU never seems to get pinned, and I seem to be handling requests pretty nicely. My question concerns memory usage, and what concerns I should have with what I am seeing. (if any) Here is the scenario: Under constant load (about 15 reqs/sec coming in from nginx), over the course of an hour, each server in the 3 server cluster loses about 100MB / hour. This is a linear slope for about 6 hours, then it appears to level out, but still maybe appear to lose about 10MB/hour. If I drop my page caches using the linux command echo 1 /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches, the available free memory shoots back up to what it was when I started the unicorns, and the memory loss pattern begins again over the hours.   I'm seeing behaviour on my iPhone where debug builds immediately exit after a call to [[UIApplication sharedApplication] registerForRemoteNotificationTypes:UIRemoteNotificationTypeBadge | UIRemoteNotificationTypeAlert]; The debugger reports it exited with the message Terminating in response to SpringBoard's termination. This behaviour doesn't happen on my ad hoc distribution builds. Can anyone explain this behavior?

• gcc optimization? bug? and its practial implication to project

  Hi All, My questions are divided into three parts Question 1 Consider the below code, #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main( int argc, char *argv[]) { const int v = 50; int i = 0X7FFFFFFF; cout<<(i + v)<<endl; if ( i + v < i ) { cout<<"Number is negative"<<endl; } else { cout<<"Number is positive"<<endl; } return 0; } No specific compiler optimisation options are used or the O's flag is used. It is basic compilation command g++ -o test main.cpp is used to form the executable. The seemingly very simple code, has odd behaviour in SUSE 64 bit OS, gcc version 4.1.2. The expected output is "Number is negative", instead only in SUSE 64 bit OS, the output would be "Number is positive". After some amount of analysis and doing a 'disass' of the code, I find that the compiler optimises in the below format - Since i is same on both sides of comparison, it cannot be changed in the same expression, remove 'i' from the equation. Now, the comparison leads to if ( v < 0 ), where v is a constant positive, So during compilation itself, the else part cout function address is added to the register. No cmp/jmp instructions can be found. I see that the behaviour is only in gcc 4.1.2 SUSE 10. When tried in AIX 5.1/5.3 and HP IA64, the result is as expected. Is the above optimisation valid? Or, is using the overflow mechanism for int not a valid use case? Question 2 Now when I change the conditional statement from if (i + v < i) to if ( (i + v) < i ) even then, the behaviour is same, this atleast I would personally disagree, since additional braces are provided, I expect the compiler to create a temporary built-in type variable and them compare, thus nullify the optimisation. Question 3 Suppose I have a huge code base, an I migrate my compiler version, such bug/optimisation can cause havoc in my system behaviour. Ofcourse from business perspective, it is very ineffective to test all lines of code again just because of compiler upgradation. I think for all practical purpose, these kinds of error are very difficult to catch (during upgradation) and invariably will be leaked to production site. Can anyone suggest any possible way to ensure to ensure that these kind of bug/optimization does not have any impact on my existing system/code base? PS : When the const for v is removed from the code, then optimization is not done by the compiler. I believe, it is perfectly fine to use overflow mechanism to find if the variable is from MAX - 50 value (in my case).

This isn't the case in chrome: just in IE8. Interestingly, it seems to behave differently depending on whether the code goes in the console/address bar or the page itself. Is this standard behaviour?

  Hi I have these lines in my html head section <script type="text/javascript" src="../behaviour/location.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="../behaviour/ajax.js"></script> When I use either in isolation, the code in the external files executes as expected. However, when I use both, I find that neither works correctly. What do I need to do to fix this?

• Site-to-site VPN using MD5 instead of SHA and getting regular disconnection

  We are experiencing some strange behavior with a site-to-site IPsec VPN that goes down about every week for 30 minutes (Iam told 30 minutes exactly). I don't have access to the logs, so it's difficult to troubleshoot. What is also strange is that the two VPN devices are set to use SHA hash algorithm but apparently end up agreeing to use MD5. Does anybody have a clue? or is this just insufficient information?

• WPF opposite of airspace issue

  I have a strange one here, I know there is a issue with airspace and transparency when opening up a web browser control within a WPF application. But in my instance I do not need transparency or opacity etc but the web pages are opening up with a strange overlay across them rather then showing solid colors? I have a WPF application that has a Grid and within the Grid there is a Frame and the frame source is a normal website url which is showing strange colors, as if there is a transparency/opacity issue going on? when I view the web page in a normal browser the page displays fine?

• memory access violation error - 0xC0000005

  I got memory access violation error sometimes.... but I don't know where the error comes from... So I reviewed the code and I found some strange code... delete m_p1; A *a = new A(); a->b = *c; m_p1 = a; --> strange code. I think it's a little strange line.... can i use the m_p1 after delete the m_p1? It can make some memory access error??
