  • Does migrating 2 domain controllers between 2 datacentre requires both virtual machines to be shut down at the same time?

    - by Imagineer
I was attempting to migrate 2 virtual machines that are domain controllers between 2 datacentres running ESX 3.5 and ESX 4.1. I was advised to shut down both domain controller at the same time during the migration process. This is to avoid USN Rollback and other replication issues. The following are the steps that I was planning to perform: 1. Shutdown both DC. 2. Copy both VMs files across to new datacentre using Veeam FastSCP (connection to both vCentre through IP address instead of hostname) 3. Power them up at new datacentre. 4. Configure Network interface/DNS/DHCP for both DCs in new datacentre I have tried to use Veeam FastSCP rather than VMware Standalone Converter is because its copying rather than converting. Someone also suggested that I use backup and restore app like Veeam backup and replication software. Sounds like a simple job, but after shutting down both DCs, the transfer rate using FastSCP is so slow registering only 1KB/s as oppose to the normal 1MB/s (or more). When that attempt to transfer failed, I tried to cold clone both DCs resulted in the both ESX hosts get disconnected. I have tried troubleshooting by referring to this - VMware KB - Diagnosing an ESX Server that is Disconnected or Not Responding in VirtualCenter It seems that the DNS being down is the caused of all unusual occurrence. The moment I powered up the DCs via VMware console command, the ESX host were able to connect to the vCentre again. How can I avoid such a pitfall again? Am I doing it correctly? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

  • Azure Virtual Machines - what fault tolerance do they provide?

    - by Borek
We are thinking about moving our virtual machines (Hyper-V VHDs) to Windows Azure but I haven't found much about what kind of fault tolerance that infrastructure provides. When I run VHD in Azure, I've got two questions: Is my VHD and all the data in it safe? I think that uploaded VHDs use the "Storage" infrastructure so they should be automatically replicated to multiple disks and geographically distributed but should I still make a full-image backup just to be safe? (Note that of course I will be backing up the actual data inside VMs that I care about; I just want to know if there is a chance greater than 0.0000001% that one day I will receive an email from Microsoft telling me that my VM is gone and that I should create or restore it from scratch). Do I need to worry about other things regarding the availability of my VMs? I mean, when I have an on-premise server I need to worry about the hardware itself, about the host operating system, what would happen if my router failed, if my Hyper-V's C: drive failed etc. Am I right in thinking that with Azure, their infrastructure takes care of all of this? Thanks.

  • Address bar showing long URL

    - by Abel
I recently upgraded my hosting account to Deluxe where I can host multiple websites. I added a domain name and created a folder in the root directory giving it the same name as my domain name and uploaded my files. Now when I navigate the site the address bar shows: 'http://mywebsite/mywebsite/default.aspx' I want it to display: 'http://mywebsite/default.aspx' My thinking in creating folders that match the domain names is to keep them somewhat organized; never intended to have my domain names listed twice in the address bar.

  • AWStats: Visits from IP address vs Crawlers

    - by user3651934
I use AWStats in cPanel to see stats of my website. Under Hosts section I see one IP address that has visited 150 pages. I am not sure if one person would have visited 150 pages using a browser. But if these 150 pages have been visited using a software application, then should not it be listed under Robots/Spider section. So how do I determine if I should block a certain IP address that has visited several hundred pages of my website? Thanks

  • nginx problem accessing virtual hosts

    - by Sc0rian
I am setting up nginx as a reverse proxy. The server runs on directadmin and lamp stack. I have nginx running on port 81. I can access all my sites (including virtual ips) on the port 81. However when I forward the traffic from port 80 to 81, the virtual ips have a message saying "Apache is running normally". Server IPs are fine, and I can still access virtual IP's on 81. • SEO best practices for a web feature that uses geolocation by IP Address

    - by Nick
I'm working on a feature that tailors content based on a geo location lookup by IP address in order to provide information based on the general area where this visitor is from. I'm concerned that content will be interpreted as focused solely on the search engine spider's geo origin when it is indexed. Are there SEO best practices for geo location by ip address features? I appreciate any specific tips or words of wisdom.

  • Can you optimize this code? T-SQL

    - by Yoda
Essentially I have three fields and I am creating a new one which is the three combined making a mailable address; problem being some fields contain null values and adding myString to a null just produces a null in sql. So this is my code, can anyone make it any cleaner? It's still looking pretty butch! UPDATE [mydb].[dbo].[Account] SET [Billing Street] = CASE WHEN [(Billing Address 1)] is null and [(Billing Address 2)] is null THEN [(Billing Address 3)] WHEN [(Billing Address 1)] is null and [(Billing Address 3)] is null THEN [(Billing Address 2)] WHEN [(Billing Address 2)] is null and [(Billing Address 3)] is null THEN [(Billing Address 1)] WHEN [(Billing Address 1)] is null THEN [(Billing Address 2)] + ' ' + [(Billing Address 3)] WHEN [(Billing Address 2)] is null THEN [(Billing Address 1)] + ' ' + [(Billing Address 3)] WHEN [(Billing Address 3)] is null THEN [(Billing Address 1)] + ' ' + [(Billing Address 2)] ELSE [(Billing Address 1)] + ' ' + [(Billing Address 2)] + ' ' + [(Billing Address 3)] END

  • Is there such a thing as a virtual COM port receipt printer?

    - by Blorgbeard
I'm debugging some code that writes directly to a COM port in order to print receipts on a receipt printer. The printer model is something like an Epsom TM-88. Instead of printing reams of thermal paper while debugging this code, it would be nice if I could use some kind of virtual printer. Like PDFCreator or FinePrint, but with a virtual COM port instead of a virtual windows printer. Does anyone know of such a thing? Edit: The code sends control characters to get bold text and other formatting. I'd like to see this in the output if possible.

  • virtual column for drop down in the ruby on rails.

    - by pramod
How to place a drop down for the virtual column, in the ruby on rails. The virutal column does not exist in my table , but I want to get the value from the drop down ,when user saves the data. for example, product_price is a virtual column , which doesn't exist in my database table. But I would like to have a dropdown, with product price to be displayed from another table. And when user selects the product_price, the selected product_price should be gettable in an object as self.product_price. Virtual column for labels is working fine, but for drop down its not working for me..any info woud be Thankful...

  • Should we create Virtual Machine environment so a consultant can develop in similiar environment?

    - by ChrisNel52
This is a large project and currently there are only 3 developers working on it. We have some money in the budget to contract development help from a software consulting firm. However, because the location of our business it would be beneficial if the consultant could do their development off-site. Also, our company policy doesn't allow contract help to VPN into our network, so that is not an option. My question is, would it be a good idea to create a Virtual Machine that copies our internal environment (particularly our database and WCF service) and give the consultant the Virtual Machine image so that they can replicate the environment at their place of work? I haven't worked much with Virtual Machines, so I'm not sure if this is a good idea or if there are huge obstacles that I'm not thinking of. If anyone has ever done anything like this, it would be great to hear the pros/cons. Any help would be appreciated.

  • How would I write a virtual CD/DVD burner that would allow programs that burn to write to ISO?

    - by Ryan
I want to write an app that will allow a program like iTunes which normally will recognize a DVD/CD burner to recognize a virtual one and then write to it creating an ISO. I would guess to use C/C++... can someone point me in the right direction as to how this can be done? Basically it would be a virtual CD/DVD burner that would output an ISO file to the hard drive. I want to do this for both the usefulness of it as well as the challenge, just need an idea of how to approach it, have no idea how to write virtual hardware.

  • How to override virtual function in good style? [C++]

    - by Knowing me knowing you
Hi, guys I know this question is very basic but I've met in few publications (websites, books) different style of override virtual function. What I mean is: if I have base class: class Base { public: virtual void f() = 0; }; in some publications I saw that to override this some authors would just say: void f(); and some would still repeat the virtual keyword before void. Which form of overwriting is in good style? Thank you for your answers.

  • Just how much do I want to make virtual?

    - by Alex
I am writing an abstract superclass where literally every method is going to be overridden. There is some default functionality I could implement, but most of the time it's enough to leave the implementation to the subclass writer. Since just about every method is going to be overwritten, how much should I make virtual and how much should I just leave as regular methods? In the current incarnation, everything is virtual, but I still haven't let this loose to anyone to use, so the design is flexible. What advantages/disadvantages are there to virtual functions? Links to good reading material about this would be appreciated.

  • LVM mirror attempt results in "Insufficient free space"

    - by MattK
Attempting to add a disk to mirror an LVM volume on CentOS 7 always fails with "Insufficient free space: 1 extents needed, but only 0 available". Having searched for a solution, I have tried specifying disks, multiple logging options, adding 3rd log partition, but have not found a solution Not sure if I am making a rookie mistake, or there is something more subtle wrong (I am more familiar with ZFS, new to using LVM): # lvconvert -m1 centos_bi/home Insufficient free space: 1 extents needed, but only 0 available # lvconvert -m1 --corelog centos_bi/home Insufficient free space: 1 extents needed, but only 0 available # lvconvert -m1 --corelog --alloc anywhere centos_bi/home Insufficient free space: 1 extents needed, but only 0 available # lvconvert -m1 --mirrorlog mirrored --alloc anywhere centos_bi/home /dev/sda2 Insufficient free space: 1 extents needed, but only 0 available # lvconvert -m1 --corelog --alloc anywhere centos_bi/home /dev/sdi2 /dev/sda2 Insufficient free space: 1 extents needed, but only 0 available The two disks are of the same size, and have identical partition layouts via "sfdisk -d /dev/sdi part_table; sfdisk /dev/sda < part_table". • After using lvextend, I can't recover unused space

    - by Cory Gagliardi
I needed to add more disk space to my CentOS VM, so I added another virtual disk, then used lvextend to add the space to the existing partition. The steps I followed was: echo "- - -" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan pvcreate /dev/sdb vgextend VolGroup00 /dev/sdb lvextend -l +100%FREE /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 resize2fs /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 This worked fine. I subsequently filled up the VM, then deleted most of the used disk space. However, the unused disk space was never recovered after I deleted all of the files. This will illustrate what I'm saying better: # df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 61G 32G 26G 56% / /dev/sda1 99M 20M 75M 21% /boot tmpfs 1006M 0 1006M 0% /dev/shm # pwd; du -h --max-depth=0 / 5.1G . I cannot figure out how to get the partition to see that only 5.1 GB is used. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

  • Strict security and virtual host isolation with Nginx?

    - by Hach-Que
I currently have an Apache web server set up under which each virtual host is isolated using HTTPD-ITK and the AppArmor module. Each virtual host's workers are setuid/setgid by the server and are then placed in an AppArmor profile. I'm looking to use Nginx but I can't find any documentation on setting it up so that rather than the worker processes being shared between all virtual hosts, worker processes are per virtual host (and thus can be setuid / setgid). Is there any way to do this under Nginx?

    I'm going to setup redundant failover Redmine: another instance was installed on the second server without problem MySQL (running on the same machine with Redmine) was configured as master-master replication Because they are in different subnet (192.168.3.x and 192.168.6.x), it seems that VIPArip is the only choice. /etc/ha.d/ha.cf on node1 logfacility none debug 1 debugfile /var/log/ha-debug logfile /var/log/ha-log autojoin none warntime 3 deadtime 6 initdead 60 udpport 694 ucast eth1 node2.ip keepalive 1 node node1 node node2 crm respawn /etc/ha.d/ha.cf on node2: logfacility none debug 1 debugfile /var/log/ha-debug logfile /var/log/ha-log autojoin none warntime 3 deadtime 6 initdead 60 udpport 694 ucast eth0 node1.ip keepalive 1 node node1 node node2 crm respawn crm configure show: node $id="6c27077e-d718-4c82-b307-7dccaa027a72" node1 node $id="740d0726-e91d-40ed-9dc0-2368214a1f56" node2 primitive VIPArip ocf:heartbeat:VIPArip \ params ip="192.168.6.8" nic="lo:0" \ op start interval="0" timeout="20s" \ op monitor interval="5s" timeout="20s" depth="0" \ op stop interval="0" timeout="20s" \ meta is-managed="true" property $id="cib-bootstrap-options" \ stonith-enabled="false" \ dc-version="1.0.12-unknown" \ cluster-infrastructure="Heartbeat" \ last-lrm-refresh="1338870303" crm_mon -1: ============ Last updated: Tue Jun 5 18:36:42 2012 Stack: Heartbeat Current DC: node2 (740d0726-e91d-40ed-9dc0-2368214a1f56) - partition with quorum Version: 1.0.12-unknown 2 Nodes configured, unknown expected votes 1 Resources configured. ============ Online: [ node1 node2 ] VIPArip (ocf::heartbeat:VIPArip): Started node1 ip addr show lo: 1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00 inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo inet 192.168.6.8/32 scope global lo inet6 ::1/128 scope host valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever I can ping 192.168.6.8 from node1 (192.168.3.x): # ping -c 4 192.168.6.8 PING 192.168.6.8 (192.168.6.8) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 192.168.6.8: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.062 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.6.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.046 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.6.8: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.059 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.6.8: icmp_seq=4 ttl=64 time=0.071 ms --- 192.168.6.8 ping statistics --- 4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3000ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.046/0.059/0.071/0.011 ms but cannot ping virtual IP from node2 (192.168.6.x) and outside.   • Merge LVM Partition with unallocated Space

    - by David
I have a linux hard drive with three areas: /dev/hda1 - ext3 boot partition (20 MB) /dev/hda2 - lvm2 main partition (6 GB) unpartitioned space - 12 GB I would like to merge the unpartitioned space into the lvm2 partition known as /dev/hda2. I tried using GParted, but it does not support lvm2. What commands or utilities could I use to add the unpartitioned space to hda2 without losing my existing data?

  • Free space on Dedi' in CentOS

    - by Trance84
It will sound stupid but i need to figure out how much disk space i have in my dedicated server, it runs CentOS6...the last command i issued was this [root@ks34900 ~]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on rootfs 9.7G 6.4G 2.9G 69% / /dev/root 9.7G 6.4G 2.9G 69% / none 1000M 288K 1000M 1% /dev /dev/sda2 914G 200M 868G 1% /home But again, stupid as it may sound... i cant figure out how much space i have in "/" folder (root) And is it possible that "/usr" have a different space (partition)?

  • How to deal with 100's or 1000's of virtual hosts

    - by anton
I am curious to know how services such as heroku manage 1000's of virtual hosts - ie if you create a web site/app, and put it up on these services, you get your own virtual host name - foo.heroku.com etc (the same applies to many other sites that have vanity URLs). I know with various web servers and proxies you can configure as many virtual hosts as you want - but there must be some upper limit to this ? Do they programmatically add virtual hosts - perhaps spreading the load? Or are there other solutions.

  • How to update OSX when space is tight?

    - by Nick L
Software Update has notified me of a new OSX system update (including the Mac App Store). It claims to be about 1.6GB in size. I have 4.6GB of free space on my hard drive. However, when I attempt to actually run the update, it fails because it claims to need 6.9GB of free space. Is there any particular reason Software Update needs so much space beyond the downloaded file size and are there any work arounds? Thanks.
