  • In a multithreaded app, would a multi-core or multiprocessor arrangement be better?

    I've read a lot on this topic already both here (e.g., stackoverflow.com/questions/1713554/threads-processes-vs-multithreading-multi-core-multiprocessor-how-they-are or http://stackoverflow.com/questions/680684/multi-cpu-multi-core-and-hyper-thread) and elsewhere (e.g., ixbtlabs.com/articles2/cpu/rmmt-l2-cache.html or software.intel.com/en-us/articles/multi-core-introduction/), but I still am not sure about a couple things that seem very straightforward. So I thought I'd just ask. (1) Is a multi-core processor in which each core has dedicated cache effectively the same as a multiprocessor system (balanced of course for processor speed, cache size, and so on)? (2) Let's say I have some images to analyze (i.e., computer vision), and I have these images loaded into RAM. My app spawns a thread for each image that needs to be analyzed. Will this app on a shared cache multi-core processor run slower than on a dedicated cache multi-core processor, and would the latter run at the same speed as on an equivalent single-core multiprocessor machine?   • Better to build or buy a compute grid platform?

    I am looking to do some quite processor-intensive brute force processing for string matching. I have run my prototype in a multi-threaded environment and compared the performance to an implementation using Gridgain with a couple of nodes (also multithreaded). The performance I observed was that my Gridgain implementation performed slower to my multithreaded implementation. It could be the case that there was a flaw in my gridgain implementation, but it was only a prototype, and I thought the results were indicative. So my question is this: What are the advantages of having to learn and then build an implementation for a particular grid platform (hadoop, gridgain, or EC2 if going hosted - other suggestions welcome), when one could fairly easily put together a lightweight compute grid platform with a much shallower learning curve?...i.e. what do we get for free with these cloud/grid platforms that are worth having/tricky to implement?   • Is it worth purchasing Mahout in Action to get up to speed with Mahout, or are there other better sources?

    I'm currently a very casual user of Apache Mahout, and I'm considering purchasing the book Mahout in Action. Unfortunately, I'm having a really hard time getting an idea of how worth it this book is -- and seeing as it's a Manning Early Access Program book (and therefore only currently available as a beta-version e-book), I can't take a look myself in a bookstore. Can anyone recommend this as a good (or less good) guide to getting up to speed with Mahout, and/or other sources that can supplement the Mahout website?

  • Is there a better way of designing zend_forms rather than using decorators?

    Hi, I am currently using zend_decorators to add styles to my form. I was wondering if there is an alternative way of doing it? It is a bit difficult to write decorators. I would love the casual one using divs and css style : <input type="submit" class="colorfulButton" > It is much simpler rather than set a decorator for a certain control and add it. Since it requires creating a decorator for each style implementation and adding it up with the control. Will view helpers to the trick?

  • how to better use of eclipse code templates (PHP)?

    One particular problem I was having was using ${word_selection} in an Eclipse PDT template. I was recently trying to use some code templates with Eclipse PDT 2.1 to speed up some common tasks. We use a lot of getters/setters, so I wrote the following template. function get${word_selection}() { return $$this->getData('${word_selection}'); } function set${word_selection}($$${word_selection}) { $$this->setData('${word_selection}', $$${word_selection}); } I named the template "getset" and the only way I know to use the Code Assist is to type: "getset" then hit my code assist keys (I have it set to Esc, but I think the default was Ctrl+Space). The problem is, this doesn't actually let me select a word to be used by the ${word_selection}. how do I type in my template name, hit the key combo, and have a word selected all at the same time? I also want to know what kinds of templates people have set up and any other tips for using templates to speed of programming.

Which is the best way to make the call to the inherited control? Call it directly in the invoke or call it using recursive-like function? They both seem to produce the same result, a row gets added and the quantity is returned, but which is the most efficient?     I'm looking at free streaming audio players for web browsers that I can use in a project. I really like the audio player used on http://freemusicarchive.org/. Are they using an open source audio player and can I get a hold of it? Or is it closed source? Also if there are any open-source audio players that anybody knows about I'd love to know about them (preferable to have one with no flash). Last thing...is HTML5 going to be able to replace audio streaming players?

  • Replacing .NET WebBrowser control with a better browser, like Chrome?

    Is there any relatively easy way to insert a modern browser into a .NET application? As far as I understand, the WebBrowser control is a wrapper for IE, which wouldn't be a problem except that it looks like it is a very old version of IE, with all that entails in terms of CSS screw-ups, potential security risks (if the rendering engine wasn't patched, can I really expect the zillion buffer overflow problems to be fixed?), and other issues. I am using Visual Studio C# (express edition - does it make any difference here?) I would like to integrate a good web browser in my applications. In some, I just use it to handle the user registration process, interface with some of my website's features and other things of that order, but I have another application in mind that will require more err... control. I need: A browser that can integrate inside a window of my application (not a separate window) A good support for CSS, js and other web technologies, on par with any modern browser Basic browser functions like "navigate", "back", "reload"... Liberal access to the page code and output. I was thinking about Chrome, since it comes under the BSD license, but I would be just as happy with a recent version of IE. As much as possible, I would like to keep things simple. The best would be if one could patch the existing WebBrowser control, which does already about 70% of what I need, but I don't think that's possible. I have found an activeX control for Mozilla (http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/control.htm) but it looks like it's an old version, so it's not necessarily an improvement. I am open to suggestions

  • SSMS Results to Grid - CRLF not preserved in copy/paste - any better techniques?

    When I have a result set in the grid like: SELECT 'line 1 line 2 line 3' or SELECT 'line 1' + CHAR(13) + CHAR(10) + 'line 2' + CHAR(13) + CHAR(10) + 'line 3' With embedded CRLF, the display in the grid appears to replace them with spaces (I guess so that they will display all the data). The problem is that if I am code-generating a script, I cannot simply cut and paste this. I have to convert the code to open a cursor and print the relevant columns so that I can copy and paste them from the text results. Is there any simpler workaround to preserve the CRLF in a copy/paste operation from the results grid? The reason that the grid is helpful is that I am currently generating a number of scripts for the same object in different columns - a bcp out in one column, an xml format file in another, a table create script in another, etc...

  • serving js libraries: better performance from google code or using asset packager?

    I am working on a rails application that uses big javascript libraries (e.g. jquery UI), and I also have a handful of my own javascript files. I'm using asset packager to package up my own javascript. I'm considering two ways of serving these files: Link to the jQuery libraries from Google Code as described at http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxlibs/documentation/#jquery , and separately package up and serve my javascript files using asset packager. Host the jquery libraries myself, and package them together with my own javascript as one big merged javascript file. My hosting solution is of course not going to beat out Google's content delivery network, so at first I assumed that end users would experience faster page loads via option #1. However, it also occured to me that if I serve them myself, users would only need to issue one request to get the merged javascript (as opposed to one for my merged javascript and another for the libraries served by google). Which approach will provide the best end-user experience (presumably in the form of faster load times?)

  • Does anyone know a better alternative to MS Excel's Solver?

    My company has to crunch a lot of data and part of the process involves running the solver and plotting a graph through resulting data points. Obviously there is a lot of copy and paste involved and the whole process is shaky, error prone and all round cluster-fudge. I was wondering if there was an alternative to the solver that can be used so that even if we have to use excel to plot the final graph, there will be a lot less data that needs to be copied and pasted back and forth. It would be great especially if the tool could be easily integrated into a .NET application but I am open to suggestions that may require a little bit of code-fu to get this to work. Thanks!

    What are the advantages of Java over Python? What are the disadvantagesof Python, over Java? Why isn't Java more like Python? Like why don't java have an command line iterpretor? I beleive Java must have some advantages, but...I'm yet to see them. Logically all languages have an advantage afaict: I learnt java before python, - a 6 month unicourse. I spend a couple of weeks using python (writting a script to make a C source file). I hated it at first (as it was so differnt from C). I realised I had fallen in love it it, when I noticed that when I went to do a follow on Java Course at uni, I'ld stopped giving my variables types, and was tryign to multiply strings.

  • Which is better? OpenCyc or ConceptNet?

    Hi, I'm doing a NLP project where I need to recognise concepts in sentences to find other similar concepts. I do this to infer word valences from a list I already have. I started using WordNet, but it gave many contradictory results. By contradictory results I mean word expansions that had contradictory valences. So now I'm looking into ConceptNet and OpenCyc. I've already implemented ConceptNet and it was all very easy and I love it. Problem is that OpenCyc appears to have a much larger and more logically rigid database, which is important when I found so many "contradictions" on WordNet... But I wouldn't know because I haven't tried it. Could someone tell me if it's worth going through the (considerable, for me) effort to implement OpenCyc, or is ConceptNet good enough to infer word valences? Are they that different? I'll be happy to explain myself further, if needed. Trying to keep it short for now! Thanks!

The work should be the same as more_threads is using 4 times as many threads but with each thread doing 4 times less work. Significant results form the profiler results are as followsL: more_threads: GPU runtime = 1474 us,reg per thread = 6,occupancy=1,branch=83746,divergent_branch = 26,instructions = 584065,gst request=1084552 less_threads: GPU runtime = 921 us,reg per thread = 14,occupancy=0.25,branch=20956,divergent_branch = 26,instructions = 312663,gst request=677381 As I said previously, the run time of the kernel using more threads is longer, this could be due to the increased number of instructions. Why are there more instructions? Why is there any branching, let alone divergent branching, considering there is no conditional code? Why are there any gst requests when there is no global memory access? What is going on here! Thanks

  • WPF PasswordBox Input Panel Icon Not Appearing: Better Workaround?

    Hello, There is a known issue in WPF where the Input Panel icon does not appear when you set focus on a PasswordBox control. I'm in need of a workaround for this, but the one suggested -- using the ITextInputPanel API -- does not quite cut it for me. Fist of all, the API works with Windows Forms controls and alternatively accepts control handles. Since WPF controls are not handle based, and they are not Forms controls, this is not quite suitable. I tried hosting a Forms control on my WPF page and that worked on the Windows XP Tabled PC (albeit with some COM exceptions) but, since there is no PasswordBox in Forms, I had to stick with a regular textbox, which is not what I need. Alternatively, using the VisualTreeHelper to get a handle on the control did not work, either. The API, according to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms699559%28VS.85%29.aspx, is only compatible with Vista. I'm dealing with Windows XP tablets. I understand that the IPenInput API can be used as an alternative, but it is now deprecated. Can someone please suggest something? I really need to fix this issue. Thanks in advance!

    Hi, Regarding to jQuery utility function jQuery.data() the online documentation says: "The jQuery.data() method allows us to attach data of any type to DOM elements in a way that is safe from circular references and therefore from memory leaks. " Why to use: document.body.foo = 52; can result a memory leak -or in what conditions- so that I should use jQuery.data(document.body, 'foo', 52); Should I ALWAYS prefer .data() instead of using expandos in any case?   • Will MyISAM type tables work better than InnoDB for large numbers of columns?

    I have a MySQL InnoDB table with 238 columns. 56 of them are TEXT type, 27 are VARCHAR(255). I am getting MySQL error 139 when users insert data sometimes. After research I found that I'm probably running into InnoDB row size/column size/column count limitations. (I'm putting it that way because the specific limits among those three things are interdependent.) Docs on InnoDB give an idea of the limits. If I switch this table to MyISAM is it likely to solve the problem? I understand the maximum row size of 65,535 bytes. I think I'm hitting InnoDB's additional 8000 byte limit somehow. Switching to PostgreSQL is also a remote option, but would take much longer.

  • using EventToCommand & PassEventArgsToCommand :: how to get sender, or better metaphor?

    The point of what I'm doing is that there are a lot of things that need to happen in the viewmodel, but when the view has been loaded, not on constructor. I could wire up event handlers and send messages, but that just seems kinda sloppy to me. I'm implementing a base view and base viewmodel where this logic is contained so all my views get it by default, hopefully. Perhaps I can't even get what I'm wanting: the sender. I just figured this is what RoutedEventArgs.OriginalSource was supposed to be? [Edit] In the meantime, I've hooked up an EventHandler in the xaml.cs, and sure enough, OriginalSource is null there as well. So I guess really I need to know if it's possible to get a reference to the view/sender in the Command as well?
