• Shared configuration for Eclipse on Debian server

  I've manually installed the latest Eclipse on our debian server and wanted to configure it so all users share the same configuration. It turned out less obvious than I thought: I don't seem to be able to install packages for all users. If I run it myself, all configuration data is saved under my own home directory. If I run Eclipse using sudo, everything is saved under the root directory but is not accessible for other users when they run Eclipse. I've been browsing the manual of Eclipse and some forums, but apart from a "yes, you can" I couldn't find any information on how that should be done. The biggest problem is installing plugins for all users to be found. Any help is greatly appreciated. Eclipse : 3.6.1 classic, installed using this procedure. Server uname: GNU/Linux * 2.6.26-2-amd64 Server is accessed using Putty, and Gnome desktop through realVNC. Just mentioning it if that is of any importance. Our sysadmin is on "prolonged leave" (working in Spain and never replaced), so I'm stuck without help here. • What is the main reason of adsl modem/routers dying ?

  The other day my home adsl modem/router (dwg 684t in this case) died. A guy from the telecom company came, brought another so no problem in day to day operation, but he also left this one. Now, I'm interested ... it didn't fall, it wasn't electrocuted ... but it just doesn't work. What could be the problem ? Can they be fixed ? Is it worth it (in which case I would have two which is always nice) ... What are the usual problems that occur with them ? In this case, I can connect to the router, I can see its settings, I just can't connect to the internet. With the new one everything works. Weird. Edit: Additional question: Can those things be fixed ? I mean, is it worth giving it to a local tinker for him to experiment on it ? I'm not looking for a definite opinion, just your personal advice ... (although in the end I think I'm gonna archive it in the "cylinder register")

• How do I change the Dropbox directory on a headless GNU/Linux server?

  I have installed Dropbox 2.0.0 via command line on my home server (Ubuntu Server 12.04) to use for off-site automated backups, but I can't change the directory that the Dropbox daemon keeps synced. I've tried the following: The official docs say to use the desktop application, which is not applicable in my situation. However I installed the desktop app on my desktop machine and changed the default folder location, but I can't find where this change is stored in the ~/.dropbox/ directory so I can make the same change on the server. This page (and several others) recommends a Python script to do the job. Looking at the script, it opens a SQLite database called ~/.dropbox/dropbox.db, which does not exist on my Dropbox install, leading me to believe the script is out-of-date. This forum thread suggests manually inserting the required row in the config.db database, which I did, but it made no difference. I checked the same database file on my desktop machine, and it does not have the dropbox_path key, so I'm presuming the information in that thread is also out of date for version 2.0. I have tried to launch the Dropbox GUI configuration wizard over SSH with X11 forwarding, as suggested in one of the answers, but the binary must detect the absence of a local X11 install and it starts a command line daemon instead, which provides no means to change the option I need. I am currently using a symlink, as suggested as an answer, but this is a kludge. I would like to know the correct way to make the change. How do I change the Dropbox directory on a headless GNU/Linux server? Update: I've ditched Dropbox and started using Copy. Their Linux tools and support is far superior to Dropbox. I leave this question here in case someone, someday, can answer it.

• How can I prevent Apache from asking for credentials on non SSL site

  I have a web server with several virtual hosts. Some of those hosts have an associated ssl site. I have a DirectoryMatch directive in my main config file which requires basic authentication to any directory with secured as part of the directory path. On sites that have an SSL site, I have a rewrite rule (located in the non ssl config for that site), that redirects to the SSL site, same uri. The problem is the http (80) site asks for credentials first, and then the https (443) site asks for credentials again. I would like to prevent the http site from asking and thus avoid the potential for someone entering credentials and having them sent in clear text. I know I could move the DirectoryMatch down to the specific site, and just put the auth statement in the SSL config, but that would introduce the possibility of forgetting to protect critical directories when creating new sites. • How to get rid of Windows XP Pro Blue pop up screen

  Windows XP user-home edition 36 bit. One day I woke to see a blue pop up screen from Microsoft Windows XP Pro. I have not installed anything new myself. The 'add on' pop up always comes on when I open up mozilla to surf the net. I always just close it out to not install anything. I then woke to have colored tabs, the new download status bar at the bottom and this pop up window that asks me to retype two words spaced, a timer of two minutes starts and states if no word put in system will shut off. I have let it run down more than a few times and it does not shut down. No other options to choose from. If I misspell with a lot of letters it tells me I did so, but if I can't read a few letters I guess at it although it is not and it lets me resume what I am doing. This window pops up every single minute no matter what I am doing. Please help, I'm really annoyed with this. I have searched the net all over and don't quit know what to look for anymore

• Turning on Bluetooth disables wifi on Yoga 2

  I have a Lenovo Yoga 2. The moment that I turn on bluetooth, the wifi drops out - I lose connection, and connecting again shows "connection failed". If I turn the bluetooth off, wifi can reestablish fine. I've tried lots of different combinations of drivers for both the wifi and the bluetooth, but no combination has has changed this behavior yet. I've read some speculation that the cards have insufficient shielding, but that seems like kind of a large flaw to ship with. I've tried with a Carbon X1, a Yoga 2 Pro, and a Yoga 2 all next to each other on the desk while running InSSIDer. The X1 and the Y2P don't lose wifi connection when the bluetooth turns on, but the Y2 does immediately. The Y2P and the Y2 are running the same drivers for bluetooth and wifi, and appear to have the same wireless card internally. During the failure state, InSSIDer still sees signal strength for my network, but I cannot connect to it. stats: the card that comes in the laptop is an Intel Wireless-N 7260 Intel Bluetooth driver is at 17.0.1401.422 Intel Wireless driver is at 17.0.2.5 Windows 8.1 x64 Home wifi is a Medialink MWN-WAPR150N

• Windows 7 hangs after going into sleep a second time

  I've searched everywhere around Google and can't figure out why this is happening so I decide to ask here to see if anyone has a problem like this. Like it says in the title, whenever I sleep ONCE I'm able to wake the system, but going back to sleep again AFTER waking up for the first time results in it hanging on no input and no output, with the fan spinning as fast as possible and alot of heat being spewed out by the fan as well. I've tried various things like setting all USB Hub Root's to not get switched off for power saving, disabling USB selective suspend, disabling PCI-e link state power management, and even unplugging ALL USB devices and it wont wake up after the second attempt. And I've even waited up to a full hour of the CPU fan spinning loudly and it's still stuck trying to wake up. The only USB devices I use are a Microsoft USB Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 (IntelliType Pro) and a generic HID compliant mouse from Creative model number OMC90S "CREATIVE MOUSE OPTICAL LITE". My other devices like external drives and controllers are unplugged when I'm not using them as having too many USB devices plugged in at a time causes a deadlock on almost all of the ports I have. Here's my system specifications (Most of these are from CPU-Z): Brand: Gateway DX4300-19 Mainboard: Gateway RS780 Chipset: AMD 780G Rev 00 Southbridge: AMD SB700 Rev 00 LPCIO: ITE IT8718 BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. ver P01-A4 09/15/2009 CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 810 at 2.60 GHz RAM: 8.0 GB DDR2 Dual Channel Ganged Mode at 400 MHz GPU: ATI Radeon HD3200 Graphics Intergrated - RS780 OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM (Acer Group) HDD: WDC WD10EADS-22M2B0 1.0 TB (Western Digital Green Caviar) My BIOS has absolutely no control over how I setup the sleep mode to be either S1 or S3. So I can't check these settings or even change them. Hybrid sleep is also disabled, I can successfully go into hibernation and wake from hibernation but this is painfully slow due to a harddrive problem I'm having with this "Green Drive". (Hibernation takes over ~3 minutes to complete) Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

  I have a simple test setup using xampp at home, and I am getting really weird behavior when I attempt to set up multiple virtual hosts on this box. • Windows 7 boots to black screen with blinking cursor

  I have an Alienware M17x that dual boots into Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 Home Premium. Currently, the computer starts at the GRUB loader and will boot into Ubuntu, but if I try to boot into Windows, I immediately get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. I have run chkdsk /R on both the main Windows 7 (/dev/dm-0p3) partition and the recovery partition (/dev/dm-0p2). I set the main Windows 7 partition to be active. I also tried running in the recovery console the commands bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildbcd None of these helped and the last set of commands deletes grub, which I then have to reinstall from Ubuntu. I think the last thing I did in windows before this started was install the newest ATI driver for my video card. This would suggest using system restore, and I actually had a restore point earlier (after the problem started), but after whatever I did that restore point does not appear in the list on the recovery disk any more, so I cannot do a system restore. Is there anything else I can try to make Windows boot properly again? Edit: Running the suggested commands bootsect /nt60 c: bcdboot c:\windows /s c: was also ineffective.

• Laptop Most Likely to Have Good Driver Support

  Through numerous bad experiences, I have learned that the most likely cause of laptop "failure" is the lack of updated drivers for new operating systems. As an example, I have a perfectly good Thinkpad T42 at home which runs Windows 7 just fine for my purposes except that no compatible ATI video drivers are available, and the generic drivers have flicker effects. I recently saw an ASUS laptop which looked quite nice except that I would be beholden to them to release ATI video driver updates customized for it. And, I can't trust them to do that for more than six months. What laptops (manufacturer/line) should I consider so that I could expect at least a couple years of frequent updates? I plan on running Windows 7 and installing whatever successor comes out. I like Intel components (especially WiFi) because I can install their drivers directly from them, and they have a long history of providing updates for years after shipping a particular component. More generally, components from companies which are likely to update drivers frequently are good as long as I can install the component manufacturer-provided drivers without laptop-specific customization (like the ATI drivers). Also, if a component can be replaced easily, I am less concerned. For example, Dell stopped pumping out updated drivers for one of its mini-PCI WiFi cards. The solution was to buy an Intel replacement on eBay for $12! That's fine. I can deal with that. So, what laptops should I consider so that I'm not likely to be stuck between a rock and a hard place?

• Apache Probes -- what are they after?

  The past few weeks I've been seeing more and more of these probes each day. I'd like to figure out what vulnerability they're looking for but haven't been able to turn anything up with a web search. I've manually tried entering a few in to see what they get, but those all appear to just return the site's home page. This server is just hosting a few Joomla! sites... but this doesn't seem to be targeting Joomla (as far as I can tell). Anyone know what they're probing for? I just want to make sure whatever it is I've got it covered (or not installed). The escalation of these entries has me a bit concerned.

• Linux VLAN Bridge

  I have home network with VLANs, one for LAN, one for WLAN and one for internet. I'd like to use bridging so that instead of configuring these same VLANs to every machine, they had own VLAN ID and bridges were LAN, WLAN and internet. I've tried it but for some reason keep-alive/ttl seems to get broken because SSH sessions etc suddenly disconnects. We have this same setup working in workplace for 4+ years with 100+ customers but it's custom firewall/router hardware so accessing it is impossible. I know that it runs Linux. So what is Debian/Ubuntu default network settings doing wrong or is it just NIC driver/hw problem? I've tried to mess araund with ttl etc settings without any luck. • Tomato/DD-WRT router to act as switch & only NAT some port

  BACKGROUND: I have a device that must use a real IP address. Currently, my ISP uses DHCP and I can have up to 4 real IP address assigned. However, the cable modem only have 1 ethernet port and it's connected to my router (running Tomato, but can run DD-wrt or other Openwrt if required). Question stems from how I can connect the additional device, requiring a real IP? EASY SOLUTION: would be to get a switch and connect to the CM, Router, and Device. But alas, I want to avoid this route, since: my wiring cabinet in my home is drawing lots of power and heat already Device will be unprotected by any firewall unable to monitor the traffic to/from device. Besides, what would be the FUN in that? =) IDEA: So what I want to do is to configure the router, so that one of the switchport is removed from the normal br0 bridge. Instead, I want to make it behave like a switch on the WAN port. What's the best way of doing this? Should I create another bridge on the WAN & the device port? Can a single port belongs to two bridges? or would I need to create a subinterface first? Would I need a DHCP-relay? • Any program to help me check whether an ethernet channel can support full-length VLAN packet?

  Sometimes, I have to face such a situation that I need to quickly and explicitly know whether a full length VLAN packet can traverse between two RJ45 ports. Yes, I mean 802.1Q ethernet frame with Etype=81 00 (diagram below). What I can do now is: Get two Windows PCs, for each PC, intall Intel Gigabit NIC and Intel specific driver to create a virtual NIC, with VLAN ID=3 assigned. Then connect the two PCs to each of the two RJ45 port. Finally execute ping to generate a full-length ethernet packet. ping -f -l 1472 <dest-IP> This way, I can be sure that the sent packet has the maximum "IP data payload" of 1500 bytes(8 bytes of ICMP header and 1472 bytes of ICMP data). If the ping gets reply, I know that the ethernet channel support full-length VLAN packet. From my experiment, some home switch or broad band routers(e.g. Linksys WRT54G) does not support full-length VLAN packet switching, so only ping -f -l 1468 succeeds. You see, I have to use an expensive Intel NIC to carry on that test, quite inconvenient. You know, for most laptop today, they do not equip an Intel NIC, and, even it is an Intel NIC, Intel VLAN driver, Intel has limitations on the models on which VLAN driver can be installed. So, my question is: Is there a small program that can let me send a full-length VLAN packet without installing a dedicated VLAN driver? Or better, the program has a stock feature that does the very job for my situation. Windows programs preferred, Linux solution welcome. Simpler the program, the better. Thank you.

  Hi I just wanna disable the default RAID in my server IBM System X3400 M2 Server(7837-24X),i have 3 disk drives SAS. I want to make them a JBOD "Just a Bunch Of Disks", because I want to install in the drive 0 CentOS, and the other two make them cache files for a squid server. • Windows 7 & Photoshop CS5.1 - "Fonts missing" issue - I have the font!! (sort of)

  I've noticed a really aggravating issue with Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 on at least two occasions. I downloaded a layered PSD file to work with, in the release notes it directed me to a download page for all of the font used, which was Futura Medium Condensed. I chcked and did not have any Futura fonts at all. So I downloaded and installed the font from the source provided by the provider of the PSD. I closed and reopened Photoshop and when I open the PSD file I get an error saying: Some text layers contain fonts that are missing. These layers will need to have the missing fonts replaced before they can be used for vector based output. I then go to edit the text layer and receive: The following fonts are missing for text layer "discount" Future CondensedExtraBold Font substitution will occur. Continue? If I click OK, it substitutes Myriad Pro for this layer. Didn't I download the right font? I go into the font dropdown and see I have a font with a slightly different name "Futura-CondensedExtraBold-Th Regular" I have also seen this issue with Helvetica. I have received a PSD file, same "some text layers contain fonts that are missing These..." error dialog when I open up the file - and when I go to edit a layer with text I get: The following fonts are missing for text layer "Home": Helvetica Font substitution will occur. Continue? I click continue - it substitutes Myriad Pro - and check my font list and sure enough I have a bunch of Helvetica fonts, none exactly named "Helvetica" Is this a common issue? Googling it yielded a few people with similar problems (I think all on Macs) but either no concrete help or no response. Is it that the two font names aren't EXACT matches? If that is the case is there any way of setting up Photoshop to more intelligently substitute or even set up some sort of mapping (if "Helvetica" then substitute "Helvetica Lt Std" ? Is there anything else, maybe something that I am not thinking of?

• Windows 7 BSOD on startup

  I got a BSOD today after getting home from 11 hours of work... It seems to work in SAFE MODE (sometimes, not always) The BSOD says: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION STOP: 0x0000003b WimFsf.sys - Address FFFFF88001A6B76B base at FFFFF88001A600000, DateStamp 4a5bc362. Sometimes it shows the welcome screen, shows the destkop for a few seconds and then BSODs Already did: unplugged all the USB devices reset the CMOS I haven't installed any new software recently. What should I do? EDIT: I've managed to get into safe mode and it seems to works fine. When I go into normal mode it shows the desktop then it freezes... Is it more likely to be a software or hardware problem? EDIT2: I've managed to get into normal mode by disabling all the non-microsoft services & startup programs. One more thing: When I shut down my PC, on the "Logging off" screen appear some artifacts. I don't think it's because of my graphics card cause I've opened Black OPS and it worked fine. It's so strange... It still BSODS on startup (but there a ~=10% that it will not), and when it doesn't BSOD's it works fine...

• What is the quickest and safest way to test new software and revert all changes, if needed?

  I'm looking for Windows software that will allow me to quickly create a "checkpoint", do whatever I might need to do to my computer - install programs/drivers/updates, create/delete personal files, reboot the system multiple times, open questionable attachments - and then revert the entire system back to when the checkpoint was created. Essentially I want Windows Restore Points that save my personal files and partitions, too. It sounds like disk imaging might be the ticket, but creating them is much too slow and the restore process too involved... I'm hoping to sacrifice full disaster recovery for speed. Creating a checkpoint should be as close to one-click as possible, and rolling back should be a matter of selecting a restore point and rebooting. Ding! I'm familiar with Sandboxie, True Image Home "Try and Decide", Returnil, and a number of other "virtual system" apps that actively "catch" changes and allow you to commit or reject them. I'm not interested in these for a number of reasons - I prefer the "cut and dry" restore point approach. Finally, I'll note that I've just recently become aware of Comodo Time Machine. It sounds absolutely perfect, however, a quick skim through the user forums show more than a few horror stories of corrupted, unbootable systems. Any positive personal experience with the software to suppress my superstitions, or suggestions for more established alternatives would be greatly appreciated - Comodo Time Machine seems relatively new. • MacBook Air Keeps dropping Wi-Fi

  So my MacBook Air keeps dropping Wi-Fi for some reason. It happens ONLY on my home network, and ONLY to my computer. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G router. I'm the only Mac on the network. Every other Wi-Fi network is perfectly fine, and every other computer on this network is fine. Many things can happen. It could say it's connected, but not be able to access the internet (whether it tells me that there's no internet access or not). It may just drop Wi-Fi altogether, and refuse to connect. Generally, if I unplug the router and plug it back in, it's all good. It also works if I restart my computer. This happens multiple times a day. Yesterday I did everything I know to get it to connect (restart router many times, restart my MacBook), and nothing worked. Eventually it just magically worked. How can I stop this from happening? We got a notice from Comcast a while ago saying that a bot called DNS Changer was detected on one or more machines on the network. I'm assuming that this can't be me, right?

How can I make an exception for allowed.php? If not possible, maybe I could enumerate all forbidden files in another Files directive? Let's say admin/ contains also user.php and admin.php which should be forbidden in this virtual host.

• Dell XPS 1530 DVD-RW firmware problem

  Hello everyone. I have this XPS laptop since a year and a half ago. About 2 months ago, with the waranty expired, i tried to run the optiarc slot load DVD-RW firmware update, and said everything was okay. Then I restarted it and the problem started: Now, every single time I turn on my computer, it get stuck at the BIOS POST until the drive sounds like "ready" and then the computer starts normally. And this happen EXACTLY the same when it's getting back from sleep. I'm pretty sure is not a software issue, because I tried with Vista Home Premiun 32 bits, Ubuntu (from 8.10+)32 & 64, and with W7 64. Already tried to run the firmware installer like a million time, in case it is a failing install with no luck. Also, google it to see if someone has the same problem, and again, no. The Drive performs pretty okay once the System is on, but waiting to the drive to be ready everytime is really annoying. The Firmware I updated was this, and the drive is: K937C Assembly, Dvd+/-rw, 8, SLOT, 1530 Sony Nec Optiarc Inc. I'll apreciate any help you can give me

• VPS to replace MobileMe or Google Apps.

  All, Yes, this has been touched on in other questions, but I can't find something similar enough. I currently have Google Apps hosting personal email, calendars, contacts, etc. I do like the other google services, but they're outside of Apps. One of the little google irritations that I have to maintain a separate account for Picassa, etc. So, I'm thinking about moving myself away from Google, but purely for personal, privacy type issues. Do I really like the ads, the email snooping, etc? I've had, and liked MobileMe, back when it was iTools, and then .Mac, but it doesn't offer that much really. How easily can I replicate it all on a VPS? I don't want to host it myself at home, I'd lose all the wonderful datacenter goodness. THis isn't about personal geekery in my own basement, just about taking a little control back from Google. So, email is fine running an IMAP server, a nice front-end, etc. What about Calendars and Contacts? And, how easily can it be setup to sync to the desktop and iPhone? Thanks.

• Can start-stop-daemon use environmental variables?

  I need to daemonize a Windows app running in Wine, and create a pid in /var/run. Since it requires an X11 session to run, I need to make sure the $DISPLAY variable is set in the running user's environment. Assuming I already have a X11 session running, with a given display, here's what the start-stop-daemon line looks like in my /etc/init.d script: start-stop-daemon --start --pidfile /var/run/wine-app.pid -m -c myuser -g mygroup -k 002 --exec /home/myuser/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/wine-app.exe Unfortunately, my version of start-stop-daemon on Ubuntu 8.04 doesn't have the -e option to set environmental variables. I gather that you could simply set $DISPLAY before the command, like so: VAR1="Value" start-stop-daemon ... But it doesn't work. Since I'm using the -c {user} option to run as a specific user, I'm guessing there's an environment switch and VAR1 is lost. I've tried exporting DISPLAY from the running user's .profile and/or .bashrc but it doesn't work either. Is there another way to do this? Is this even possible? Am I overlooking something? • Metacity/Compiz not staring upon Login Ubuntu 10.10

  TLDR: As of this afternoon, I do not have a window manager when I login to Ubuntu 10.10. I would like to have window manager on login without needing to add to startup. Just started using linux again as my home OS. (Used it for a long time years ago but been on windows up until this past weekend) so this may be kind of n00b-ish :) Anyways, up until today, everything on my machine was running okay. I did not have compiz running as the default wm because I'm running NVidia Drivers and Xinerama (and as I understand Xinerama & Compiz don't work well together). I made no changes to my xorg / etc but today when I logged in, I had to manually start metacity from command line to get any window manager. Really not sure what would be causing this or what I can do to get it working again. My xorg.conf is available here: https://gist.github.com/845618. My default Window Manager is set to /usr/bin/metacity in Configuration Editor under /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager. p.s. Any tips on how to run 3 monitors where I can move windows between screens without Xinerama would be appreciated but that's prolly for another thread :)

• Small store infrastructure - where to begin?

  It looks like my older brother is about to change jobs - from lawyer to shooting range proprietor - and since I'm the family 'computer guy' I have the task of coming up with and setting up the in-store equipment. Only problem, I don't know how to start or where to look. I'm a web programmer, not an IT specialist. To that end, I figured I should ask the pros. Users: 3 (myself, my brother, and his business partner) Equipment: 1 Windows (likely 7) desktop for POS software, 1 Windows desktop/laptop for backroom use (bookkeeping, etc.) Other: ?? I'm looking for a reliable and, well, idiot-proof way to handle backups. Neither my brother nor his business partner are tech savvy (A web browser, email, MS Word and Excel are about the extent of their knowledge), so I need something they can handle. On-site would be preferable to off-site, given my brother's hesitance to have sensitive business data be handled by an outside source. I'm also looking for a small on-site server. I estimate that, at most, only 2-3 users will need access. A linux solution would keep costs down, but I'm concerned about Windows <- linux interoperability. Would the store security cameras' storage be handled by the security company, or would we have to stream that data to our own server? I know from my own experience with personal security that the company gives/loans a recording device to the home owner, but I'm not sure about business security. I know this sounds like a shopping list, and it's pretty vague. I wish I could give more detail, but between my own ignorance and things not being 100% nailed down on the business end, I'm a bit stuck. At the very least I'd like a nudge - links on a place to start, what to look for, things I need to think about, etc. - for this endeavor. Thanks.
