• 421 Concurrent Connections - Ratelimit from helpdesk to rackspace server

  We have Kayako helpdesk running on our WHM Linux server. When e-mails come in from customers, notifications are sent out by Kayako to a number of staff whose mailboxes are hosted on Rackspace mail servers. I noticed a large queue in the Exim queued message viewer of WHM - when looking in Exim logs I can see many lines 2012-10-13 20:06:56 1TN72s-0007Cw-1l SMTP error from remote mail server after initial connection: host mx2.emailsrvr.com [173.203.2.32]: 421 Too many concurrent connections from this client. One client email results in about 5 emails to rackspace servers, perhaps 60 emails per 1 hour on average - not a huge amount but enough to cause messages to be rejected when sent in short bursts. In this case ideally if we can limit the connections sent to the rackspace server we can comply with their limit. For our requirements if we send 1 email every10 seconds or so, this would be OK. Messages to all other servers should go through a normal rates, only mx1.emailsrvr.com and mx2.emailsrvr.com should have this connection limit policy applied. Is this possible?

• What would cause the "gi" module to be missing from python?

  After some not so clever editing of the default Python version in Ubuntu, from 2.7 to 3.2, I ended up breaking my entire system. After my computer imploded and everything stopped working, I tried to revert back my changes (by linking /usr/bin/python2.7 to /usr/bin/python and changing the default version in /usr/share/python/debian_defaults back to 2.7) but some things are still broken. For example when I type "import gi" in the python interpreter I get the fallowing message : >>> import gi Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: No module named gi >>> error which appears with some programs too (eg: gnome tweak tool). I have tried re-installing python both from the software center and from sources, but the same error persists. Python -- version now returns : Python 2.7.2 and also some software packages which depend on python 2.7 are now working (for example the software center), but some things are still broken. Is there anything I can do to completely re-install python 2.7 as the default version?

• LDAP over SSL with an EFI Fiery printer

  I've got a printer with a Fiery running 8e Release 2. I can authenticate users against AD using the LDAP configuration, but I can only get it to work if I don't use SSL/TLS, and only if I use SIMPLE authentication. Right now, it's authenticating using a fairly low-impact user, but it's also the only system on our network that's not using LDAPS. I can get AD info fine over LDAPS using ldp.exe from my machine, our firewall, our mail filter, our linux boxes, etc. The only problem child is the Fiery. I've added the LDAP server certificate as a trusted cert to the Fiery, but after I check the box for Secure Communication and change the port to 636, pressing Validate results in a dialog box coming up saying: LDAP Validation Failed Server Name invalid or server is unavailable. I've tried changing the server name to use just the name, the FQDN, and the IP address, and changed it to another server, just to see if it was just this AD server that was fussy with the Fiery. EDIT: removed LDP output, added packet capture analysis from wireshark: The conversation seems pretty normal to me, up to the point where the Fiery terminates the connection after the server sends back a handshake response. Maybe they messed up their TLS implementation? I'm trying support, but it's been fairly useless so far. The cert is a SHA-2 (sha256RSA) 2048-bit certificate. Also, it looks like the Fiery is specifying TLS 1.0. Looking at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa374757(v=vs.85).aspx, I'm not seeing SHA256 and TLS 1.0 combination being supported by SChannel. headdesk perhaps that's why, after the DC changes the cipher spec, the connection is terminated by the Fiery? • Can't uninstall/reinstall .NET Framework 3.5 with DISM

  My net framework 3.5 is broken. Verification tool (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx) says it's OK, but its not. Net framework 3.5 can't be just uninstalled/installed on Windows 7. But you can do this by add/remove windows features. For me this doesn't work, I receive thus (not very helpful) error message ... "An error occurred. not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled" I found DISM tool which does exactly same, but have log. And now: DISM /online /disable-feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 1603 error. And log: http://pastebin.com/4jBkEiT6 Any ideas how to do it?

• Unable to open attachment in Windows Live Mail 2011 (Build 15.4.3502.0922)

  I use Windows Live Mail 2011 (Build 15.4.3502.0922), in Windows 7 Pro 64. When I receive an email message that has an attachment, when I double click to open this attachment, nothing happens. Any kind of attachment, nothing happens. If I right click and choose "Open", nothing happens either. If I right click and choose Save As, I can save the file to disk and open it via Windows Explorer. I would like to be able to double click to open the attachment. I tried to repair WLM but that didn't make any difference. My antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials. Does anyone know anything about this issue? Thanks

• Problem installing Ubuntu One in Windows XP

  I've just had to reinstall my Ubuntu One client for Windows XP Service Pack 3 and whenever I do it uninstalls my previous attempt then comed up with the following error message c:\Program Files/ubuntuone\dist\ubuntuone-control-panel-qt.exe This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling this application may fix this problem. The only option I have is "ok" then nothing happens. I've tried downloading Ubuntu One several times and tried Windows 2000 compatibility mode, Administrator mode and nothing. The only thing that I make happen is for Windows NT 5 mode, a small box appears with nothing showing and nothing else. I really need Ubuntu 1 on my computer as it has everything on it so I'm wondering if I can do anything to make it install or if it's a lost cause. The last time I tried to install U1 on Windows XP I had the same problem but after about 10 tries it installed. I've tried about 30 times now and nothing. My computer is a Dell OptiPlex SX280 with 2gb ram and 340GB Hard disk Intel Pentium 4 HT Processor

• Can't see attachments in OWA but can in Outlook

  Hi, I have several users, including myself, that cannot see attached images (.jpg) in OWA. I can see them in Outlook but in OWA the attachments, the link to see them, are not included. I see the line for attachments in the message. But it's just empty. I have other messages that have been sent to me from outside of the domain and I can see them. Just not internally sent ones. Was hoping for help. Thank you. I did not see anything in the file levels of the registry to prohibit .jpg files. Exchange 2003 Server, Outlook 2003, OWA for 2003.

• Authentication problem: can't bypass the login prompt when browsing to the SQL Reporing Services web

  Hi all, I'm having a hard time configuring Reporting services on one of our servers. I'm not uninitiated in the domain of IIS7 but I cannot get rid of the login prompt when I'm surfing to the Reporting services website. What I did: I made a windows and SQL user with the same name: Then I choose Anonymous authentication in II7 and filled in the credentials of the specific R.S. user http://img32.imageshack.us/i/iis7auth.jpg/ I choose 'Local Service' as the service account in the R.S. configuration mgr http://img88.imageshack.us/i/rsconfigmgr.jpg/ The first problem is that there's always a pop-up when surfing to the website The second is that when I'm able to log in I get the message that the user doesn't have the appropriate permissions. It is too much for controller action in my opinion. If everything goes fine then access code is reserved for current user and user is authenticated. Conclusion When controller action grows big you have to move code to layers it actually belongs. In this posting I showed you how I moved access code claiming functionality from controller action to user service class that belongs to service layer of my application. As the result I have controller action that coordinates the user interaction when going through access code claiming process. Controller communicates with service layer and gets information about how access code claiming succeeded.

• Unable to connect to mysql through JDBC connector through Tomcat or externally.

  I've installed a stock mysql 5.5 installation, and while I can connect to the mysql service via the mysql command, and the service seems to be running, I cannot connect to it through spring+tomcat or from an external jdbc connector. Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeTransport Event Category: (8) Event ID: 3017 Date: 4/29/2010 Time: 1:21:12 PM User: N/A Computer: NETSRV Description: A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.3.5 was generated for recipient rfc822;[email protected] (Message-ID <19104335.51321272561635734.JavaMail.SYSTEM@PARROT). Causes: A looping condition was detected. (The server is configured to route mail back to itself). If you have multiple SMTP Virtual Servers configured on your Exchange server, make sure they are defined by a unique incoming port and that the outgoing SMTP port configuration is valid to avoid looping between local virtual servers. • Mark as read on delete in Outlook?

  I'd like Outlook to mark any messages I delete to be marked as read. For bonus points, I'd like it to only do this on messages that I have opened/previewed before pressing delete since this means I've looked at the content and chosen to delete it. I know I can set it to mark as read after x seconds when I'm looking at it, that's not what I want. I also know that I can move off the message & back on to it or right click to mark as read - still not what I want. I'm using Outlook 2007 in case that matters. [Edit: I just found I can at least mark as read with a keyboard shortcut: Ctrl-Q, but again, it'd be nice to not have to do this. More shortcuts here.]

  Hello, I'm puzzled by this email message that gets quarantined by McAfee Secure Messaging Service (it's based on Postini) for no reason that I can think of. Can anyone explain to me why the final score is so low when none of the filters were triggered? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening? Regards, Martin

  Hi, While transferring data to my 2nd gen Drobo power went out. Now my Drobo is not mounting to my OS X 10.6.3 I have tried Disk Repair and this error message appears: Verify and Repair volume “disk1s2” Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume. Invalid key length Invalid record count Catalog file entry not found for extent The volume could not be verified completely. Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. I tried DiskWarrior too but it doesn't work either. It gives me that I need more memory to continue and software shuts down. Any one know solution to this one?

• Auto-responder rule in Outlook 2010 produces double signature (but only to certain emails)

  I have set up an auto-responder in Outlook 2010 using a custom template, as a staff member will be on vacation for 6 weeks. It works perfectly, apart from the fact certain people receive two signatures at the bottom of the message instead of one. When reviewing the "sent" folder, there is no sign of double signatures. In the custom template, there is only 1 copy of the signature. Signatures are set to be applied automatically to new messages or replies- however, if I remove the signature from the template, then it seems no one receives a response with the signature. People sending from Hotmail accounts do not receive a duplicate signature. Gmail users do see a duplicate signature. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

So certainly the software engineering community is aware of these issues. But I feel like our aggregate society does not appreciate how these issues can plague working systems and applications. As Steve McConnell notes: ...Unlike financial debt, technical debt is much less visible, and so people have an easier time ignoring it. If this is true, and I believe that it is, then I fear that governments and businesses may defer regular maintenance and fortification against hackers until it is too late. [Much like NYC and the steam pipes.] My Question: Do you share my concern? And if so, is there a way that we can avoid the software equivalent of NYC and the steam pipes?

• Windows 2008 DHCP service fails - "...failed to see a directory server for authorization."

  I have a small environment running Windows 2008 R2 where the DHCP service on the domain controller fails every two weeks. The most-visible error is Event ID 1059 and the Event Viewer message is: "The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization." The setup features two domain controller and the usual services and roles (file, print, Exchange). Restarting the service fails for a variety of reasons. I've had the following messages at different times: "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation". "Unable to determine the DHCP Server version for the Server 192.168.x.x" "The DHCP service has detected that it is running on a DC and has no credentials configured for use with Dynamic DNS registrations initiated by the DHCP service." A reboot of the domain controller resolves the issue for ~2 weeks. The systems are virtualized and there are no network connectivity issues. Any ideas what's happening here?

• Recommendation for email setup for programatically sending lots of emails

  To clarify I have an app that notifies users via email when certain actions take place (I am not spamming as the user has opted in to the notifications and can change that option at any time). Because of number of emails that needs to be sent, Gmail, Yahoo, etc will not work. Unless I am mistaken services like MailChimp, Lyris, etc will also not fit this need since every email is sent one at a time and is very specific to the user and action that took place. What I really want is something that would allow me to be able to call some mail function, give it a recipient, from, message and subject, and not have it be blocked by the email service. This can be a free or paid service. I have server access so I can install something if necessary as well but I don't know much about email services and fear if I do it myself, I'll get blocked by some other player like my VPS host or ISP or something.

• Video acceleration problem with Windows 7 games and PPTX files

  I have a Dell xps M1330 which originally ran Vista, but I upgraded to Windows 7. When I try to run a Win 7 game like spider solitaire I receive the following message: The game is running in software rendering mode. Hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver which could slow down game performance. Make sure you have the latest video card driver installed and that hardware acceleration is turned on. I confirmed that hardware acceleration is turned on. When I go to Dell's site, I'm told there is no later video driver. When I run the game it runs very choppy. I have a .pptx file which is doing strange things in normal view and I suspect it may be related to the same video acceleration problem.

• Some problems after running ubuntu tweak application

  I am a first time user of ubuntu 12.04 and must say that i am enjoying it. Somehow my skype on ubuntu is screwed up. The message that i am getting says (Disk IO error). Did any one face the problem before. Also i downloaded the ubuntu tweak application. After that application has clean some file, the application it self is not starting now.. I am quiet new to linux much and fear that if the tweak application has cleaned some files which were necessary. • HTTP Non-persistent connection and objects splitting

  I hope this is the right board for my question about HTTP protocol with non-persistent connections. Suppose a single request for a html object that requires to be split in two different HTML response messages. My question is quite simple: do the connection will be closed after the first packet dispatch and then the other one will be sent on a new connection? I can't figure out if the non-persistent connection is applied at "single object level" (does't care if on multiples messages) or for every single message. Thanks for your answers!

• Can't boot Ubuntu 12.04 from external Hard Drive using Mac

  Recently, I upgraded the RAM and hard drive on my Early 2008 Macbook to improve the performance. Rather than throw away the old hard drive, I bought an enclosure for it to turn it into an external hard drive, and, since all the data was migrated to my new drive, I decided to install Ubuntu on it for funsies (note: I am a near-total Ubuntu n00b). My first attempt to install Ubuntu didn't work (it gave me errors about not being able to find the BIOS or something), but my second attempt finished successfully (can't remember what, if anything, I did different). However, when I plug the external drive into my Macbook, it gives me a message saying it can't read the disk. Moreover, when I go into the Startup Manager (i.e.: what you get when you turn on the Macbook while holding the option key), the external drive is not one of the available startup disks. I thought this might be because I have an older Macbook, so I tried booting it with my mom's Late 2011 Macbook, and got the same results. Then I tried booting it through my dad's Dell laptop that runs Windows 7, and that time it worked. This is really counter intuitive to me, since the hard drive originally came from a Macbook, so if anything you'd think it would be less compatible with the Windows laptop than the Macbook. In case it helps, here's a link to a picture of how I set up the partition table while doing the install (not shown there is the fact that I checked the "Format?" box next to the /boot partition, since it gave me a warning when I tried to continue the installation without doing so) Anyone have any clue at all? If it helps, the hard drive I'm using is a 120GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard disk drive.

• Getting error 0x000003eb when installing DDK sample printer drivers

  I've got a development machine, which has been severly abused when it comes to installing and removing printer drivers. I'm now at the stage where I want to install some sample printer drivers from the DDK (WDK), but unfortunately I get the message 'Unable to install printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x000003eb). So I tried installing the same printer driver built from the DDK in a clean Win 7 x64 VM, and it works, so the only thing I can imagine is that the driver store or driver folder may be slightly corrupt from the many previous printer drivers I had installed. So my question is, is there anyway I can clean my system of old printer drivers / file? Or any repair functionality in windows that may replace the common windows printer drivers?
