• FindControl() method throws ArithmeticException?

  I have a line of C# in my ASP.NET code behind that looks like this: DropDownList ddlStates = (DropDownList)fvAccountSummary.FindControl("ddlStates"); The DropDownList control is explicitly declared in the markup on the page, not dynamically created. It is inside of a FormView control. When my code hits this line, I am getting an ArithmeticException with the message "Value was either too large or too small for an Int32." This code has worked previously, and is in production right now. I fired up VS2008 to make some changes to the site, but before I changed anything, I got this exception from the page. Anyone seen this one before?

• Trouble converting string/character to byte in lisp

  I've some data that I'm reading in using read-line and I want to convert it into a byte-array. babel:string-to-octet works for the most part except when the character\byte is larger (above 200) in which case it returns two numbers. As an example, if the character is ú using babel:string-to-octet returns (195 185) instead of 250 which is what I'm looking for. I tried a number of encodings in babel but none of them seem to work. If I use read-byte or read-sequence it does read in 250. But for reasons of backward compatibility, I'm left with using read-line and I would like to know if there is something I'm missing when using babel:string-to-octet to convert ú to 250. I'm using ccl 1.8 btw.

• C#, cannot understand this error?

  I am using VS2008. I have a project, SystemSoftware project, connect with a database and we are using L2E. I have a RuntimeInfo class which contains some shared information there. I don't want to create another set of Entity Data Model in the helper project. I just added all related files as a link in the new helper project. In the AndeDataViewer project, I get the connection string from above RuntimeInfo class which is a class from my SystemSoftware project as a linked file. The code in AndeDataViewer is like this: public class DbAccess : IDisposable { private String connStr = String.Empty; public DbAccess() { connStr = RuntimeInfo.AndeDBConnStr; } } My SystemSoftware works fine that means the RuntimeInfo class has no problem there. But when I run my AndeDataViewer, the statement inside above constructor, connStr = RuntimeInfo.AndeDBConnStr; , throws an exception. • pre tag is being formatted strangely in page

  I am outputting some code in one of my pages, using a <pre> tag. The code is being output correctly, but for some strange reason, the first line of the code is indented (i.e. shifted to the right, by quite a large amount). I am not applying any style to that element, and I checked in FF Firebug and no styling is being applied, so I have no idea why the first line is shifted by so much to the right - any ideas? the code that generates the tag looks like this: <pre> <?php echo $script_code; ?> </pre> The generated code looks like this: <iframe src="http://www.example.com"> </iframe> Any ideas what may be going wrong?

• Dynamic SQL queries in code possible?

  Instead of hard coding sql queries like Select * from users where user_id =220202 can these be made dynamic like Select * from $users where $user_id = $input. Reason i ask is when changes are needed to table/column names i can just update it in one place and don't have to ask developers to go line by line to find all references to update. It is very time consuming. And I do not like the idea of exposing database stuff in the code. My major concern is load time. Like with dynamic pages, the database has to fetch the page content, same way if queries are dynamic first system has to lookup the references then execute the queries, so does it impact load times? I am using codeignitor PHP. If it it possible then the next question is where to store all the references? In the app, in a file, in the DB, and how?

• How to secure a VM while allowing customer RDS (or equivalent) access to its desktop

  We have a Windows Client/(SQL-)Server application which is normally installed at the customer's premises. We now need to provide a hosted solution, and browser-based isn't feasible in the short term. We're considering hosting the database ourselves, and also hosting the client in a VM. We can set all this up easily enough, so we need to: ensure that the customer can connect easily, and also ensure that we suitably restrict access to the VM (and its host, of course) We already access the host and guest machines across the internet via RDS, but we restrict access to it to only our own internal, very small, set of static IPs, and of course theres the 2 (or 3?)-user limit on RDS connections to a remote server. So I'd greatly appreciate ideas on how to manage: the security the multi-user aspect. We're hoping to be able to do this initially without a large investment in virtualisation infrastructure - it would be one customer only to start with, with perhaps two remote users. Thanks!

• What does this C++ code mean

  I was trying to understand how webkit parses urls, and I'm having a hard time making heads or tails of this: Vector<char, 4096> buffer(fragmentEnd * 3 + 1); This line is on line 1214 (you can see it here: http://trac.webkit.org/browser/trunk/WebCore/platform/KURL.cpp#L1214). I get that it's making a vector of type char, with each entry being an array of char 4096 bytes large, but I don't get the buffer(fragmentEnd * 3 + 1) part. I think that it confuses me most b/c I can't find where the buffer variable is instantiated anywhere (shouldn't it be something more like Vector<char, 4096> buffer = new Vector<char, 4096>(...)?   The following code does not compile in VS2012, it gives error C2064: term does not evaluate to a function taking 1 arguments on the line of the second for_each (line 4 below). vector<string> v1; for_each(begin(v1), end(v1), [](string s1) { vector<string> v2; for_each(begin(v2), end(v2), [](string s2) { cout << "..."; }); }); I found some related stuff like http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/560907/capturing-variables-in-nested-lambdas which shows a bug (they are doing something different) but on the other hand that shows that what I print above should be possible. What's wrong with the above code?

  I am completely new to regular expressions so I'm looking for a bit of help here. I am compiling under JDK 1.5 Take this line as an example that I read from standard input: ab:Some string po:bubblegum What I would like to do is split by the two characters and colon. That is, once the line is split and put into a string array, these should be the terms: ab:Some string po:bubblegum I have this regex right now: String[] split = input.split("[..:]"); This splits at the semicolon; what I would like is for it to match two characters and a semicolon, but split at the space before that starts. Is this even possible? Here is the output from the string array: ab Some String po bubblegum I've read about Pattern.compile() as well. Is this something I should be considering?

  I need to write a list to a file in python. I know the list should be converted to a string with the join method, but since I have a tuple I got confused. • C++ online Role Playing Game (RPG)

  So I've been learning C++ and SDL to make some basic 2d games. I want to create a game sort of like World of Warcraft but a 2D version. I want it to be on-line and use a database or something to start data like amount of Gold, HP, etc. I was wondering though, if I do this in SDL, would it still work on-line or would the user have to download SDL themselves to play? I just want a game like this but be able to play it with some friends, just for learning purposes you know. I was also looking at DirectX because everyone has that on windows pretty much. • Regex for zeroing in on build output text error

  I'd like to quickly hone in on what failed in a build log output that is nearly 5k lines long, using Notepad++ as my editor for the file. Notepad++ has the nice ability to specify regular expressions, so I am wondering if there is a way to not match: Compile complete -- 0 errors, 0 warnings but to match, for example: Compile complete -- 1 errors, 0 warnings Compile complete -- 100 errors, 0 warnings where the match would be (1 or more) errors. If this isn't possible, I will probably just write a quick line-by-line parsing tool instead, but I was hoping someone on StackOverflow could whip out a regular expression in the same amount of time - I'm definitely not proficient enough with regular expressions to be able to write one for my needs in a short amount of time.

• Android: Unable to access a local website over HTTPS

  I am trying to access a locally hosted website and get its HTML source to parse. I have few questions: 1) Can I use "https://An IP ADDRESS HERE" as a valid URL to try and access. I do not want to make changes in the /etc/hosts file so I want to do it this way. 2) I cannot get the html, since it is giving me Handshake exceptions and Certificate issues. I have tried a lot of help available over the web , but am not successful. • Notepad++ regular expression find and replace $_REQUEST with $_GET but a more secure

  What I am doing is replacing, in a large program, all $_REQUEST['var'] and mysql_escape_string($_REQUEST['var']) with either the 1st or 2nd line below the dotted line. Now, I have figured out this much of the regular expression but I would like to make it simpler. Instead of having to run the top one first then the 2nd one I would like to just run one all together. I tried this but it did not work. (mysql_escape_string\()*$_REQUEST\[\'([^']*)\'\]\)(\)*) So below is what works but again have to do it twice. $_REQUEST\[\'([^']*)\'\] mysql_escape_string\($_REQUEST\[\'([^']*)\'\]\) (isset($_GET['\1'])?mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['\1']):false) (isset($_POST['\1'])?mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['\1']):false) ============================ Update: Yeah, after some research I figured out that Notepad++ does not support most regular expressions. I guess one additional step can not hurt a person. It's just laziness. *NOTE: BUT if anyone wants to try feel free to comment. At least it is just 2 steps and not 20.

Say i have the following line in my program: jobSetupErrors.append("abc"); In the case above where jobSetupErrors is a StringBuilder(), what i see happen is: New String Object is created and assigned value "abc" value of that String object is assigned to the existing StringBuilder object If that is correct, and I add 1 more line ... jobSetupErrors.append("abc"); logger.info("abc"); In the above example are we creating String object separately 2 times? If so, would it be more proper to do something like this? String a = "abc"; jobSetupErrors.append(a); logger.info(a); Is this a better approach? Please advise

• Few questions about backing up the OS

  I'm running windows 7 with 2gb memory and 2.50 Ghz dual core cpu. here are my question regarding backing up an entire drive. I plan to use Macrium Reflect because its free. And I can't afford to buy one. If I backup a hard drive would I only be able to backup the partition where the operating system is? If I have installed applications which requires activation keys, and I have already installed an activation key. Does backing the hard drive also backup those application, so that I won't have to re-apply the keys later? If I have a multi-boot system, would the backup also include those other OS that are installed in my hard drive? Can I still boot into them after restoring the image? Do you have any links there that could enlighten me on what drive backup really is. Thanks!

• Expected symbol problems with this function declaration

  I am just getting back into the C programming realm and I am having an issue that I think is linker related. I am using cmake for the first time as well, so that could be adding to my frustration. I have included a third party header file that contains a typedef that my code is trying to use, and it has this line: typedef struct a a_t so my code has a_t *var; //later..... var->member;// this line throws the error which throws the error: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type So am I just missing another include file, or is this a linker issue? I am building this code in QtCreator and using cmake. I can dive on a_t to see that typedef declaration in the included header, but I can't seem to dive on "struct a" itself to see where it's coming from. Thanks

• C++ Program performs better when piped

  I haven't done any programming in a decade. I wanted to get back into it, so I made this little pointless program as practice. The easiest way to describe what it does is with output of my --help codeblock: ./prng_bench --help ./prng_bench: usage: ./prng_bench $N $B [$T] This program will generate an N digit base(B) random number until all N digits are the same. Once a repeating N digit base(B) number is found, the following statistics are displayed: -Decimal value of all N digits. -Time & number of tries taken to randomly find. Optionally, this process is repeated T times. When running multiple repititions, averages for all N digit base(B) numbers are displayed at the end, as well as total time and total tries. My "problem" is that when the problem is "easy", say a 3 digit base 10 number, and I have it do a large number of passes the "total time" is less when piped to grep. ie: command ; command |grep took : ./prng_bench 3 10 999999 ; ./prng_bench 3 10 999999|grep took .... Pass# 999999: All 3 base(10) digits = 3 base(10). Time: 0.00005 secs. Tries: 23 It took 191.86701 secs & 99947208 tries to find 999999 repeating 3 digit base(10) numbers. An average of 0.00019 secs & 99 tries was needed to find each one. It took 159.32355 secs & 99947208 tries to find 999999 repeating 3 digit base(10) numbers. If I run the same command many times w/o grep time is always VERY close. I'm using srand(1234) for now, to test. The code between my calls to clock_gettime() for start and stop do not involve any stream manipulation, which would obviously affect time. I realize this is an exercise in futility, but I'd like to know why it behaves this way. Below is heart of the program. • CPU Configuration Issue for 2 Servers (Server 2008 R2)

  I have 2 servers running the exact same Classic ASP code with Access DBs (yes, not ideal, but it is what it is, for now). 1) Xeon 5520 @ 2.27 GHz (6 GB Memory) 2) Xeon E5-2620 @ 2.00 GHz (2 processors, 32 GB Memory) For most pages the newer E5-2620 processes the pages between 10-15% faster. On pages requiring heavy and/or multiple complicated access stored procedures (queries) the older 5520 does a much better job. I believe the servers are configured nearly identically. My question: is it possible that the newer, multi-processor server is not as good at handling Classic ASP as the older single processor? Is there a configuration difference that needs to be in place that I'm missing since I'm shooting for identical implementations?
