• Cygwin, ssh, and git on Windows Server 2008

  Hi everyone. I'm trying to setup a git repository on an existing Windows 2008 (R2) server. I have successfully installed Cygwin & added git and ssh to the packages, and everything works perfectly (thanks to Mark for his article on it). I can ssh to localhost on the server, and I can do git operations locally on the server. When I try to do either from the client, however, I get the "port 22, Bad file number" error. Detailed SSH output is limited to this: OpenSSH_4.6p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8e 23 Feb 2007 debug1: Connecting to {myserver} [{myserver}] port 22. debug1: connect to address {myserver} port 22: Attempt to connect timed out without establishing a connection ssh: connect to host {myserver} port 22: Bad file number Google tells me that this means I'm being blocked, usually, by a firewall. So, double-checked the firewall settings on the server, rule is there allowing port 22 traffic. I even tried turning off the firewall briefly, no change in behavior. I can ssh just fine from that client to other servers. The hosting company swears that there's no other firewalls blocking that server on port 22 (or any other port, they claim, but I find that hard to believe). I have another trouble ticket into them, just in case the first support person was full of it, but meanwhile I wanted to see if anyone could think of anything else it can be. Thanks, Paul

I tried Windows Movie Maker 2.6 but it only generated a 640x480 video. I also tried Windows Live Movie Maker but it put a big black margin around my pic (and unexplicably, produced a video with a slightly lower volume). Do you know any way to do what I need?

  How does Subnetting Work, and How do you do it by hand or in your head? Can someone explain both conceptually and with several examples? Server Fault gets lots of subnetting homework questions, so we could use an answer to point them to on Server Fault itself. What is classless routing and why is class-based routing obsolete? If I have a network, how do I figure out how to split it up? If I am given a netmask, how do I know what the network Range is for it? Sometimes there is a slash followed by a number, what is that number? Sometimes there is a subnet mask, but also a wildcard mask, they seem like the same thing but they are different? Someone mentioned something about knowing binary for this? Not looking for links to other sites (unless maybe you have one post with a bunch of good ones). I already know how to subnet, I just thought it would be nice if Server Fault had a generic subnetting answer.

The sparseimage is stored on an external drive, and I already executed: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 I have also verified that the naming format of the sparsebundle is: MachineName_.sparsebundle. I'm running the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.7).

• Windows Media Player - Display JPEG cover art for FLAC files

  I got WMP 12 (on Windows 7 RC1) to play FLAC files by installing the Ogg Vorbis/FLAC, Direct Show filters, but WMP does not display the embedded cover artwork. After experimenting I found that it will display the cover art if it is embedded in PNG format, but up to now I've used JPEG for all my FLAC files. Rather than re-tagging all my files, does anyone know a way to get WMP 12 to display JPEG embedded cover art?

• HP Storageworks 448 tape drive input/output error with Ubuntu

  I'm trying to set a backup to tape of a machine using flexbackup. However any attempt to write to the tape drive (via either flexbackup or just tar) results in "/dev/st0: Input/output error" The machine seems to recognise the drive (HP Storageworks Ultrium 448) and that there's a tape in it and "mt status" seems to work... • Cannot run a VM with more than three network interfaces with KVM

  I'm running KVM on top of Ubuntu 10.10 Server I can create VM's (Virtual Machine) and network interfaces fine but I cannot seem to add more than three network interfaces. As soon as I have a VM with four network interfaces it gets stuck on startup at the starting SeaBIOS page with this message: Starting SeaBIOS (version pre-0.6.1-20100702_143500-palmer) So far I've verified this with two VM's, a Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and a Vyatta router. The specific network hardware I assign to the VM's doesn't seem to matter. I'm trying to have one bridged interface and three private networks using Vyatta to route between them. Does anyone know why I can't run a VM with more than three network interfaces? Edit: Additionally the KVM thread responsible for the specific VM hangs using ~100% CPU (i.e. one core). • Menu tab completion for recent history in zsh

  I am interested in a potential zle widget for zsh. Is there a way to build a widget that mimics the kill-completion selectable menu? Essentially I want to be able to press , tab in vi-command-mode, or maybe !-tab-completion at the shell and get a list of recent history (or related history compared what is already entered at the commandline) that allows me to scroll through it and possibly select a relevant function to call or compare similar calls. Looking through the manual I stumbled onto a similar widget that I have mapped like so: # tab completion history menu (vicmd) autoload -z history-beginning-search-menu zle -N history-beginning-search-menu-space-end history-beginning-search-menu bindkey -M vicmd "\t" history-beginning-search-menu-space-end # emacs binding could be "\e\t"? (I wouldn't know) Therefore, if I enter vicmd and hit tab when I enter something like "grep", then I get a list of all grep calls in history. It also asks me for the list-number and it will perform the numbered item in history. If I enter a space and then try this, it lists ALL of my history history. This is fairly close to what I want, but there are some problems. For example, 1) it prints the entire list of relevant history and does not check the number of lines of the screen so it could easily blow up the space on the terminal; 2) when I type in numbers for selecting an item in history it does not show me the numbers I type, so I may make a mistake and have to start over again; 3) I would love to be able to hook in appearance tweaks. I was wondering if there exists more updated version of this widget or if there is any way to look at the source for kill-completion or history-beginning-search-menu to see if I could think of a way to do it.

• Looking for a help desk ticketing system..

  Hi guys Im looking for a good help desk ticket solution. It must perform the following actions for it to be useful. It needs to have a single point of contact via email..e.g [email protected] If we recieve a telephone(or an email outside of the system) we need to be able to create a ticket as if had been added via the single point of contact, this needs to be done with ease in order to save time. Certain people within our organisation deal with certain customers, so if the email/ custom input support call as mentioned in bullet 2 is picked up as having a relationship with that certain person in our organisation it needs to be sent to them/put in their queue for them to work on. If a person is out of office or sick any tickets sent to them must be forwarded to somebody else or put into a seperate pool of tickets that anybody can access. Perhaps have an agent that sorts through tickets in the pool and assigns them to anybody who is available, preferably the person with fewest tickets in their queue/list. Once a customer emails and the system logs it they immediately get a response with a ticket number and maybe details of who is dealing with the problem. Any correspondance in relation to a particular ticket is automatically grouped into some sort of message, and not made into a load of separate tickets. I.e system scans incoming email subjects for ticket numbers and assosciates it with exisiting tickets if that number exists. Any help is much appreciated Thanks P.S I have taken a look at OTRS but i'm not feeling it so unless someone can convince me I guess i'm after an alternative.

• Run script before shutdown/restart

  I'd like to run a PHP script when an instance is told to shutdown, but of course before it actually finishes shutting down. My particular script is just looking to push some log files from the local partition to a another server. I've got the gist of how this process works, but I need some clarification. How I understand it. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Create an executable script in /etc/init.d (lets call it /etc/init.d/push-logs) Create a symlink to /etc/init.d/push-logs from /etc/rc0.d (shutdown) and /etc/rc6.d (reboot). The name should be KXXpush-logs Here's my questions: Of course - am I understanding correctly? For #2 above - it sounds like the lower the XX the better - is there too low a number I can use? Does it matter if it shares a number with another script? Does the script in /etc/init.d/push-logs HAVE to follow the standard init.d template (supporting start/stop, etc. commands)? This doesn't really apply to my use case. If possible I just want the script to be the following: #!/bin/sh # # Run PHP file prior to shutdown # /usr/bin/php /path/to/php_file.php

• I need advices: small memory footprint linux mail server with spam filtering

  I have a VPS which is originally destined to be a webserver but some minimal mail capabilities are needed to be deployed as well, including sending and receiving as standalone server. The current setup is the following: Postfix reveices the mail, the users are in virtual tables, stored in MySQL on connection all servers are tested with policyd-weight service against some DNSBLs all mail is runs through SpamAssassin spamd with the help of spamc client the mail is then delivered with Dovecot 2' LDA (local delivery agent), virtual users as well As you saw... there's no virus scanner running, and that's for a reason: clamav eats all the memory possible and also, virus mails are all filtered out with this setup (I've tested the same with ClamAV enabled for 1,5 years, no virus mail ever got even to ClamAV) I don't use amavisd and I really don't want to. You only need that monster if you have plenty of memory and lots of simultaneous scanners. It's also a nightmare to fine tune by hand. I run policyd-weight instead of policyd and native DNSBLs in postfix. I don't like to send someone away because a single service listed them. Important statement: everything works fine. I receive very small amount of spam, nearly never get a false positive and most of the bad mail is stopped by policyd-weight. The only "problem" that I feel the services at total uses a bit much memory alltogether. I've already cut the modules of spamassassin (see below), but I'd really like to hear some advices how to cut the memory footprint as low as possible, mostly: what plugins SpamAssassin really needs and what are more or less useless, regarding to my current postfix & policyd-weight setup? I'm not sure it's working at full capacity but it seems promising.

• BES Express - configure MDS to push messages from 3rd party web application

  Hi! I have developed IIS web service to send PAP messages using Blackberry Push API over MDS. And there is an application installed on device, configured to receive push messages on appropriate port. Everything works well on MDS simulator. But it's not working well in real environment: I have installed BES Express and register several devices. I can browse MDS url with appropriate port, so url is correct. Also port enabled for reliable pushes is used in push message and in device application. • libvirt qemu/kvm migration problem

  I am using kvm and libvirt on my Dell server. Now i am trying to migrate one virtual machine from a physical server to another. However, I failed everytime. In virsh on physicalServer1, I typed: virsh # migrate virtualmachine1 qemu+ssh://username@physicalServer2/system error: operation failed: migration to 'tcp:physicalServer2:49163' failed: migration failed Then I searched FAQ part on libvirt.org. It says: error: operation failed: migration to '...' failed: migration failed This is an error often encountered when trying to migrate with QEMU/KVM. This typically happens with plain migration, when the source VM cannot connect to the destination host. You will want to make sure your hosts are properly configured for migration (see the migration section of this FAQ) I managed to ssh physicalServer2 from a shell on virtualmachine1 so the above red part did not explain my failure.   First of all, a few questions as I'm a bit confused :P Is the Chrome OS that is shipped on Chromebooks "Chromium"? I'm wanting to buy a Chromebook, but I want to download an ISO or other similar format first so I can try it out in VMware. To be clear, I'm wanting the exact version that ships on Chromebooks, as I want to get a good feel for what I'll be buying Where can I find this? I've found other things but I'm not sure they're the actual Chrome OS
