  • What tools are available to generate end user documentation?

    End user documentation on how to use applications is an important part of the user experience of applications, irrespective of whether they are winforms, wpf or even asp applications. In a startup or internal development team situation, where there isn't a dedicated documentation department, it can take a lot of resources to maintain screen shots and associated user documentation, such as on-line help or even printable manuals. What tools are available to assist in creating screenshots of all the "screens" within an application (be they winforms, wpf or aspx) to help automate the capture of screen shots, and associating with the relevant documentation? In addiiton, are there any that allow automation of annotations of a particular control (so use cases like: Draw a red box around the Username control with a callout to say "This is where you'd enter your user name, in the form '[email protected]'")?

  • svn vs git for the sole developer? [closed]

    If I am sole developer (I do not work in a team) working from my laptop (Windows OS and Linux VM) and backing up data to the cloud (Dropbox etc), then is git still better than svn for my version control needs? I was thinking not since I wont need any of git's distributed features. But is git such a better approach to version control that I should consider moving anyway? With so many articles saying how people are moving from svn to git? I was wondering, if they are talking about large or open projects with teams of developers vs the sole developer. What do you think?

  • Linux repository contains latest tools for synaptic

    I'm using backTrack5R3. And I 've installed Synaptic as well as ubuntu Software center. Synaptic is very easy to use and gives wide range of details for the packages that I'm going to download. But the problem is it lack of lot of new files and information. Like vlc or adobe reader. The latest stable version of vlc is 2.0. but synaptic only installs, 1.1. And it don't find adobe. I would like to get new versions of them. What is the best way/source to update new files? EDIT: I mean after performing update & upgrade synaptic still contains vlc 1.0.6 which is outdated. I'm looking for a way to get new/best source.

    I have this DVB+Analog usb tv tuner Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 (r2) [USB ID 2040:6502]. This used to work under ubuntu 10.04 LTS. But in 12.04 there seems to be a problem. I have linux-firmware-nonfree and ivtv-utils installed. I am running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64 bit with all updates installed and the default unity environment. When I run mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video1:input=1:norm=PAL I get a solid green screen and no picture. Here input 1 is the composite input of the card.     I visit many website which I think is built using ASP.NET web forms because of the extension (.aspx). When I view source of these website I see at least one or two something like: <input type="hidden" name="__VIEWSTATE" id="__VIEWSTATE"> or wvcD4NCjxwPtin2YTZh9iv2YrYqSDYp9mE2KvYp9mG2YrYqSDZh9mKINit2..... However, yesterday I visited two sites on is the 'ASP.NET forums - http://forums.asp.net' and the other is 'POF'. The extension of these sites is still (.aspx) but when I view the source of these site I could not find any <input type="hidden" name="__VIEWSTATE" id="__VIEWSTATE"> nor wvcD4NCjxwPtin2YTZh9iv2YrYqSDYp9mE2KvYp9mG2YrYqSDZh9mKINit2..... Now, I would like to know how those sites use ASP.NET Web Forms and their final HTML output is still clean?

  • Why isn't Startup Disk Creator working in 12.04?

    I'm trying to create a bootable USB stick (7.5G) for Ubuntu 12.04 (x86_64) from another Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 PC. I downloaded the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Release amd64 (20120425). When I run Make Startup Disk, I selected the downloaded release. The drive shows up with a capacity of 7.5GB and a blank space under "Free Space". I have tried using the "Erase Disk" button, which seems to erase the disk. The problem is that the options below the "Disk to use" section are grayed out. The "Make Startup Disk" is colored dull orange, while the source disc image and device to use are bright orange. The "Make Startup Disk" button doesn't do anything when I click it. The only working buttons are "Other...", "Erase Disk", and "Close". Upon using Other button to select the ISO, it allows to select the ISO but it doesn't load and the "Source Disk Image" field remains empty.

Depending on your needs, this can be as simple as adding the following to a startup script (eg rc.local for systems that use it): # /lib/ufw/ufw-init start For systems that use SysV initscripts, an example script is provided in doc/initscript.example. See doc/upstart.example for an Upstart example. Consult your distribution's documentation for the proper way to modify your boot process. On my system I have this: # /etc/ufw/ufw.conf # # Set to yes to start on boot. If setting this remotely, be sure to add a rule # to allow your remote connection before starting ufw. Eg: 'ufw allow 22/tcp' ENABLED=yes So, why does simple iptables rule manager need to be started at boot time? Is there any secret to that, or it merely checks if all rules are in place ?

  • Lazy HTML attributes wrapping in Internet Explorer

    Having encountered this Internet Explorer (all versions) behavior several times previously, I eventually decided to share this most probably useless knowledge. Excuse my lengthy explanations because I am going to show the behavior along with a very simple case when one can come across it inadvertently. Let's say I want to implement some simple templating solution in JavaScript. I wrote an HTML template with an intention to bind data to it on the client side: Please note, that name of the “sys-template” class is just a coincidence. I do not use any ASP.NET AJAX code in this simple example. As you can see we need to replace placeholders (property name wrapped with curly braces) with actual data. Also, as you can see, many of the placeholders are situated within attribute values and it is where the danger lies. I am going to use <a /> element HTML as a template and replace each placeholder pattern with respective properties’ values with a little bit of jQuery like this: You can find complete code along with the contextFormat() method definition at the end of the post. Let’s assume that value for the name property (that we want to put in the title attribute) of the first data item is “first tooltip”. So it consists of two words. When the replacement occurred, title attribute should contain the “first tooltip” text which we are going to see as a tooltip for the <a /> element. But let’s run the sample code in Internet Explorer and check it out. What you’ll see is that only the first word of the supposed “title” attribute’s content is shown. So, were is the rest of my attribute and what happened? The answer is obvious once you see the result of jQuery(“.sys-template”).html() line for the given HTML markup. In IE you’ll get the following <A id={id} class={cssClass} title={name} href="{source}" myAttr="{attr}">Link to {source}</A> See any difference between this HTML and the one shown earlier? No? Then look carefully. While the original HTML of the <a /> element is well-formed and all the attributes are correctly quoted, when you take the same HTML back in Internet Explorer (it doesn’t matter whether you use html() method from jQuery library or IE’s innerHTML directly), you lose attributes’ quotes for some of the attributes. Then, after replacement, we’ll get following HTML for our first data item. I marked the attribute value in question with italic: <A id=1 class=first title=first tooltip href="first.html" myAttr="firstAttr">Link to first.html</A> Now you can easily imagine for yourself what happens when this HTML is inserted into the document and why we do not see the second (and any subsequent words if any) of our title attribute in the tooltip. There are still two important things to note. For example, if I wrote following on my page (note the trailing space for the title attribute value) <a href="{source}" title="{name}  " id="{id}" myAttr="{attr}" class="{cssClass}">Link to {source}</a> then I would have my placeholder quoted correctly and the result of the replacement would render as expected: The second important thing to note is that there are exceptions for the lazy attributes wrapping rule in IE. As you can see href attribute value did not contain spaces exactly as all the other attributes with placeholders, but it was still returned correctly quoted Custom attribute myAttr is also quoted correctly when returned back from document, though its placeholder value does not contain spaces either. Now, on account of the highly unlikely probability that you found this information useful and need a solution to the problem the aforementioned behavior introduces for Internet Explorer browser, I can suggest a simple workaround – manually quote the mischievous attributes prior the placeholder pattern is replaced.     I'm designing a silverlight application for showing sheet music from a midi file. I want to create a horizontally scrolling musical staff. At my job I maintain a winforms application that is a scrolling Gantt chart of airplane schedules, and it basically has a rows collection, and it maps the left-most pixel and right-most pixels of the control to datetimes. Then the paint method loops through what it determines will be the visible rows, and draws a screen that shows the schedule information between the two dates. Would I be correct in assuming that I would need to something similar in silverlight for my sheetmusic, or would it be better to just create a horizontal scrollviewer containing a canvas that I have drawn programmaticially on. Am I headed in the right direction? I havent seen any articles on designing such a custom control: can you point me at any?

In my application, I would interested in getting both the the distance from source ray to input: t0 and source ray to output of bounding box: t1. That is, their code can be combined with a program under the GPL without conflict (the new combination would have the GPL applied to the whole). However, some free/open source software licenses are not GPL-compatible. I'm assuming this implies that one can relicense new-BSD licensed code to GPL?

  • Right multi object dependance design

    I need some help with a correct design. I have a class called BufferManager. The push() method of this class reads data from a source and pushes it to a buffer repeatedly until there is no more data left in the source. There are also consumer threads that read data from this buffer, as soon as new data arrives. There is an option to sort the data before it comes to buffer. What I do right now is that BufferManager, instead of pushing data to the buffer, pushes it to another "sorting" buffer and starts a sorting thread. SorterManager class reads the data, sorts it in files and push()es the sorted data into the buffer. There will be a bottleneck (I use merge sort with files) but this is something I can't avoid. This is a bad design, because both BufferManager and SorterManager push data to a buffer (that consumers read from). I think only BufferManager should do it. How can I design it?

    Not to long ago i was using only 35% of my HD. Just recently it shot up to 54% and my diskspace is 16gb so thats more then 3gigs that have been taken. From what i remember i failed to build mysql, i install gitolite which required me to build git from source which had a tons of dependencies (i think it was for building docs, i think i saw latex and other packages but i was drozy when i was installing). I suspect that is what is taking the diskspace. Anyways so far i deleted source folders i know i had and ran these commands. What else can i do? (3gigs is mighty) sudo apt-get autoclean sudo deborphan | xargs sudo apt-get -y remove --purge

  • How to disable Alert volume from the command line in Natty?

    There is an option in the Sound Preferences dialog, Sound Effects tab, to toggle Alert volume 'mute'. It works and suffices for my needs to disable the irritating system beep/bell. However, I reinstall systems a LOT for testing purposes and would like to set this setting in a shell script so it's off without having to fiddle with a GUI. But for the life of me I can't seem to find where this can be toggled via a command line tool. I've scanned through gconf-editor, pulseaudio's pacmd, grepped through /etc, even dug through the gnome-volume-control source code, but I am not seeing how this can be set. I gather that gnome-volume-control has changed since a few releases ago. I'm using Natty fwiw. Ideas?

  • Using a SQL Prompt snippet with template parameters

    As part of my product management role I regularly attend trade shows and man the Red Gate booth in the vendor exhibition hall. Amongst other things this involves giving product demos to customers. Our latest demo involves SQL Source Control and SQL Test in a continuous integration environment. In order to demonstrate quite how easy it is to set up our tools from scratch we start the demo by creating an entirely new database to link to source control, using an individual database name for each conference attendee. In SQL Server Management Studio this can be done either by selecting New Database from the Object Explorer or by executing “CREATE DATABASE DemoDB_John” in a query window. We recently extended the demo to include SQL Test. This uses an open source SQL Server unit testing framework called tSQLt (www.tsqlt.org), which has a CLR object that requires EXTERNAL_ACCESS to be set as follows: ALTER DATABASE DemoDB_John SET TRUSTWORTHY ON This isn’t hard to do, but if you’re giving demo after demo, this two-step process soon becomes tedious. This is where SQL Prompt snippets come into their own. I can create a snippet named create_demo_db for this following: CREATE DATABASE DemoDB_John GO USE DemoDB_John GO ALTER DATABASE DemoDB_John SET TRUSTWORTHY ON Now I just have to type the first few characters of the snippet name, select the snippet from SQL Prompt’s candidate list, and execute the code. Simple! The problem is that this can only work once due to the hard-coded database name. Luckily I can leverage a nice feature in SQL Server Management Studio called Template Parameters. If I modify my snippet to be: CREATE DATABASE <DBName,, DemoDB_> GO USE <DBName,, DemoDB_> GO ALTER DATABASE <DBName,, DemoDB_> SET TRUSTWORTHY ON Once I’ve invoked the snippet, I can press Ctrl-Shift-M, which calls up the Specify Values for Template Parameters dialog, where I can type in my database name just once. Now you can click OK and run the query. Easy. Ideally I’d like for SQL Prompt to auto-invoke the Template Parameter dialog for all snippets where it detects the angled bracket syntax, but typing in the keyboard shortcut is a small price to pay for the time savings.

  • Cookbook: SES and UCM setup

    The purpose of this post is to guide you setting up the integration between UCM and SES. On my next post I’ll show different approaches to integrate WebCenter Portal, UCM and SES based on some common scenarios. Let’s get started. WebCenter Content Configuration WebCenter Content has a component that adds functionality to the content server to allow it to be searched via the Oracle SES. To enable the component installation, go to Administration -&gt; Admin Server and select SESCrawlerExport. Click the update button and restart UCM_server1 managed server. Once the managed server is back, we’ll configure the component. In the menu, under Administration you should see SESCrawlerExport. Click on the link. You’ll see the window below. Click on Configure SESCrawlerExport. Configure the values below: Hostname: SES hostname. Feed Location: Directory where data feeds will be saved. Metadata List: List of metadata that will be searchable by SES. After updating the values click on the Update button. Come back to the SESCrawlerExport Administration UI and click on Take Snapshot button. It will create the data feeds in the specified Feed Location. To check if the correct configuration was done, please access the following URL http://&lt;ucm_server&gt;:&lt;port&gt;/cs/idcplg?IdcService=SES_CRAWLER_DOWLOAD_CONFIG&amp;source=default. SES Configuration Let’s start by configuring the Identity Plug-ins in SES. Go to Global Settings -&gt; System -&gt; Identity Management Setup. Select Oracle Content Server and click the Activate button. We’ll populate the following values: HTTP endpoint for authentication: URL to WebCenter Content. Notice that /cs/idcplg was added at the end of the URL. Admin User: UCM Admin user. This user must have access to all CPOE content. Password: Password to Admin user. Authentication Type: NATIVE. Go back to the Home tab and click on Sources on the top left. Select Oracle Content Server on the right and click the Create button. Configuration URL: URL that point to the configuration file. Example: http://&lt;ucm_hostname&gt;:&lt;port&gt;/cs/idcplg?IdcService=SES_CRAWLER_DOWNLOAD_CONFIG&amp;source=default. User ID: UCM Admin user. Password: Password to Admin user. Click on the Authorization tab and add the appropriate values to the fields below. Make sure you see the ACCOUNT and DOCSECURITYGROUP security attributes at the end of the page. HTTP endpoint for authorization: http://&lt;ucm_hostname&gt;:&lt;port&gt;/cs/idcplg. Display URL prefix: http://&lt;ucm_hostname&gt;:&lt;port&gt;/cs. Administrator user: UCM Admin user. Administrator password. On the Document Types tab, add the documents that should be indexed by SES. As our last step, we’ll configure the Federation Trusted Entities under Global Settings. Entity Name: The user must be present in both the identity management server configured for your WebCenter application and the identity management server configured for Oracle SES. For instance, I used weblogic in my sample. Password: Entity user password.\ Now you are ready to test the integration on the SES UI: http://&lt;ses hostname&gt;:&lt;port&gt;/search/query/.
