• FreeBSD high load loopback interface

  I have a problem with a FreeBSD server. There is a FreeBSD 9.0 amd64, two network cards em1 (internet), em0 (local network) configured firewall ipfw, natd, squid (not transparent), the server acts as a gateway for access to the Internet. Next problem: upload via squid is very low. • exchange 2003 to 2007, recipient update services

  going to try my best to explain: our exchange 2003 was migrated to exchange 2007 (was not here for the migration). Looking in active directory sites and services - services - Microsoft exchange - company - address list container - recipient update services i have two recipient update services 1) recipient update service (enterprise configuration) 2) recipient update service (my-domain) my guess is one of these is left from the old exchange 2003. (im guessing this because the migration was not done properly, the exchange server was never actually uninstall, it was just taken offline, and then later disposed of). could having two of these cause me issues, and if so, how do i know which one i could get rid of ? Im asking because i honestly have no idea. it might even be nothing. thanks

• How do I enable mutual SSL in IIS7 with a self-signed certificate?

  I've created a self-signed certificate in IIS7. Then I exported this certificate to a .pfx and then installed it on the client machine's IE browser. Then I set "Require Client Certificate" on the server's IIS configuration. When I try to visit the site with IE, a dialog box comes up for me to choose a certificate, however, there are no certs in that dialog box. When I click "OK" without choosing any certs, I get a 403 forbidden error. How can I make this work? Appreciate the help in advance.

  I've got a very minimalistic setup of ubuntu precise, created using debootstrap. So please don't assume that any packages are installed just because they usually are. On that system, I'd like to play some sounds from a java applet. However, this always fails with the following error message: javax.sound.midi.MidiUnavailableException: Can not open line at com.sun.media.sound.SoftSynthesizer.open(SoftSynthesizer.java:1132) at com.sun.media.sound.SoftSynthesizer.open(SoftSynthesizer.java:1036) ... Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: No line matching interface SourceDataLine supporting format PCM_SIGNED 44100.0 Hz, 16 bit, stereo, 4 bytes/frame, little-endian is supported. at javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getLine(AudioSystem.java:476) at javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getSourceDataLine(AudioSystem.java:604) at com.sun.media.sound.SoftSynthesizer.open(SoftSynthesizer.java:1066) ... 35 more As the messages mention a soft synthesizer, and pcm lines, I expect that the lack of some midi daemon is not the issue here. As far as I can tell, the alsa kernel modules are loaded, including snd_hda_intel, snd_pcm, snd_seq_midi among others. I've also included the alsa-base and alsa-utils packages in my installation. alsa-mixer looks good, using “HDA Intel PCH” as its default device. What other packages, configuration settings or daemon startups does java require to make its sound output work?

• MySQL port 3306 blocked in csf yet can still telnet to port 3306 from external host

  We have a Centos 6 VPS that was recently migrated to a new machine within the same web hosting company. It's running WHM/cPanel and has csf/lfd installed. csf is set up with mostly vanilla config. I'm no iptables expert, csf has not let me down before. If a port isn't in the TCP_IN list, it should be blocked on the firewall by iptables. My problem is that I can telnet to port 3306 from an external host, yet I think iptables ought to be blocking 3306 because of csf's rules. We are now failing a security check because of this open port. (this output is obfuscated to protect the innocent: www.ourhost.com is the host with the firewall problem) [root@nickfenwick log]# telnet www.ourhost.com 3306 Trying 158.255.45.107... Connected to www.ourhost.com. Escape character is '^]'. HHost 'nickfenwick.com' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL serverConnection closed by foreign host. So the connection is established, and MySQL refuses the connection due to its configuration. I need the network connection to be refused at the firewall level, before it reaches MySQL. Using WHM's csf web UI I can see 'Firewall Configuration' includes a fairly sensible TCP_IN line: TCP_IN: 20,21,22,25,53,80,110,143,222,443,465,587,993,995,2077,2078,2082,2083,2086,2087,2095,2096,8080 (lets ignore that I could trim that a little for now, my concern is that 3306 is not listed in that list) When csf is restarted it logs the usual slew of output as it sets up iptables rules, for example what looks like it blocking all traffic and then allowing specific ports like SSH on 22: [cut] DROP all opt -- in * out * 0.0.0.0/0 -> 0.0.0.0/0 [cut] ACCEPT tcp opt -- in !lo out * 0.0.0.0/0 -> 0.0.0.0/0 state NEW tcp dpt:22 [cut] I can see that iptables is running, service iptables status returns a long list of firewall rules. Here is my Chain INPUT section from service iptables status, hopefully that's enough to show how the firewall is configured. • Why does waking a PC up with a timer act differently than with the power button?

  I have a Windows 7 machine set up as a server. It has no monitor and is only accessed through remote desktop. I set up two scheduled tasks, one to put the computer to sleep at night and another to wake it up in the morning. When it's woken up from sleep via a timer, it stays awake for only a couple minutes before going back to sleep. When woken up by pushing the power button, however, it stays awake all the way until the sleep timer. Why does my PC behave differently in these two scenarios? I have set the PC not to prompt for a user's password on wake, since I worried that the login screen might follow different power rules. I tried SmartPower Configuration but had the same problems. I can provide more details if questions are asked in the comments, but I'm not sure what's relevant.

The configuration file config/database.yml is set up right, with the data i use to enter as redmineuser. So does one have an idea why it is not working like i wish?

• Excel 2002 disappears with no error message

  Excel 2002 closes about 30 seconds after I open it. No further action has to be taken; I open the program, wait a little while, and the window and process just disappears. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Office 2002 Pro installed. Recently, Outlook 2007 was added to the computer (previously not installed at all.) Word 2002 works fine. Excel 2002 also works fine on another computer with a similar configuration. Things I've already checked for or tried: Verified that no add-ins are enabled. Repairing the installation. Uninstalling and reinstalling. Rename %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Excel I'm guessing that it is trying to load a component that doesn't exist and failing, but I don't know how to proceed. • Send one invalid email response to sender

  I discovered that my postfix/dovecot configuration isn't rejecting emails. If a person sends an email to an invalid email-address, it just drops it. I am fine with this behavior since I think it discourages spammers from mining emails (I have had some success). Recently a person I did not want to talk to emailed an address I cut off and didn't receive a response back. It would have saved me some problems if they knew to call me instead of sending 50+ emails. How would I configure Dovecot/postfix to send a message back to a sender of an email address and then limit this 1 per domain or unique email.   I am currently configuring RAID 10 (first time doing RAID ever) for a server at work. In the Configuration Utility. I am given the option of either span 2 or span 4. Having never done this before, I was curious if someone could tell me the pros and cons of for each span? • Create Virtual Image of Laptop before Formatting

  I have a 3 year old laptop running Windows XP that I used for business. Although I have not used the laptop in over a year, I now want to re-commission it with Windows 7 and a fresh install. Before I do the fresh install I want to create a Virtual Image of the laptop that I can keep and potentially run on my desktop machine should I ever need to access any of the old files/projects that it contains currently. I know that most people will say just copy the files over to your desktop, but my concern is the configuration of the laptop. I used to use it for development and it has older versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server, Active X controls etc, etc than I currently use so I really want to preserve the environment not just the files. So really I am asking what is the best tool-set/method to achieve this? I understand there are free VM tools available but I have never done this before and would appreciate any help.

  I just bought this notebook and I've already installed in a new partition Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with 6gb of swap memory. My mouse is blocked, the UI is blocked, ALT+F1 to kill something or to restart is blocked, I can't really do anything... I've also tried and it freezes with: Ubuntu 3D Ubuntu 2D Gnome Shell and it freezes both with low and high load. I can only press on power button (physically) and restart my laptop (and this is not the correct way to do things). I'm using this laptop for work, so I need a stable OS without this freeze. Someone knows how to solve this problem? UPDATE: /var/log/messages is empty /var/log/kernel.log - http://paste.ubuntu.com/1220182/ /var/log/Xorg.0.log - http://paste.ubuntu.com/1220186/ I just installed propetary driver from ATI, it crash anyway. This morning I started laptop, I enabled wireless, opened dropbox and chrome - freeze.   basically i want to ask question about configurable addressing scheme for LAN interface hardware. i have read about it from a book, some main points are given by a configurable addressing scheme provides a mechanism that a customer can use to set a physical address.The mechanism can be manual (the switches that must be set when the interface is first installed).or an electronic memory such as an EPROM that can be downloded from the computer(what does this means). Most hardware needs to be configured only once- configuration is usually done when the hardware is first installed. Question:Suppose a network administrator configures the LAN interface hardware (assigns the address) when he installs it. Now later on if he needs to change the physical address of the device can he change it? Or in this addressing scheme the hardware can only be configured once and we can not reconfigure it later on.

  in MVC3 razor we found that their is no way to watch the design in Visual studio as well we can see aspx file by going to design mode. their is a little trick to solve this issue first is that if you have Expression web or Vs 2008 then open the file on them how see here in expression web 4 you need to add the extension .cshtml and open them as html as we open other. in Visual studio 2008 you need to add the extension .cshtml and set them open as html. well their is no big trouble if design not worked. but in some case when you need to get this issue solved this need to be work for configuration do this: Expression Web 4 > tools > application options > configure editor > click on new extension icon show in exact left put the cshtml in the window they show you and choose expression web [open as html] after that you can see the design in expression web. by default Expression web not have cshtml as known extension so you need to do that to add them because without it they never handle cshtml file and refer them to Visual studio. after setting this you  EW4 open the cshtml file as html and show you design in design mode. in Visual studio 2008 you can use same trick to solve this issue just follow this step > options > text editors > file extension put cshtml in textbox and set the option html editor from dropdown and click on add and ok this will open your cshtml file as html.

• ASP.NET, PostgreSQL, Mono, Ubuntu, Apache: Good idea?

  I am a long-time Microsoft .NET developer. ASP.NET/MSSQL/IIS has been my bread & butter over the past 6 years. Now, I'm getting fond of the "lightweightness" of Ubuntu 10.xx server. I'm also loving SSH-ing it from my Windows 7 PC and installing apps using the awesome "apt-get" command. I've also been using HeidiSQL with MySQL now and loving it. It feels like Management Studio. However, i've read that PostgreSQL "may" be better than MySQL, and I did experience some MySQL overloads in my Moodle box (but this can be just a poor tweaking in my part). My question is, would it be a good idea to run this configuration? ASP.NET 4.0 PostgreSQL (the latest one I can apt-get!) Ubuntu 10.10 with Mono running on Apache Also, I assume I would be using Npgsql for Mono as my connector from ASP.NET to PostgreSQL?

• Remote Desktop Services In A Virtual VMWare Environment

  I have a quick question regarding Microsoft Remote Desktop Services in a virtualized environment using VMWare. This environment will actually be hosted in a large data center with in a cloud that is offered. This particular data center has the ability to establish high speed point to point connections with customers via metro-ethernet who are hosted in the cloud. The result is that customers can actually host their corporate domain in the data center's cloud. Put the merits of such a configuration aside for the time being. Believe me when I say that the cloud is stable and had enough hardware behind it to rival a dedicated cabinet. My question has to do with RDS in a virtual environment, which would amount to virtual desktops hosted on a virtual server. I've read that this works without issue using Hyper-V and VMWare. But before I take the plunge I wanted to get some feedback from the community.

  How can I disable at application level a network interface? The main question is this: If I disable the nic trough wmic (win7) or devcon (XP), the "plug and play" of a wired nic doesn't work any more. For example, if the user put the cable on a disabled nic, the OS doesn't know about it. So I need to persist the enable condition but disabling the networking like a disable nic. There's some API, network configuration (routing, changing ip, changing gateway, any), .NET Framework resource (Only NetFramework 2.0) or do you can think in any workaround to do this? I thought I would install SQL2008 SP1, but after install I cannot connect to SQL via Management Studio, and in configuration manager I cannot start SQL? • Installing Bugzilla on Ubuntu 9.04 and Plesk

  Hey guys. I'm trying to install the latest Bugzilla version on my ubuntu server. (Want to use a subdomain like bugs.domain.com) I already installed all necessary perl modules and check_modules.pl doesn't show any errors. But when I'm running the testserver.pl script I get the following: TEST-OK Webserver is running under group id in $webservergroup TEST-FAILED Fetch of images/padlock.png failed I'm also not able to visit ANY file within the bugzilla folder from the browser. I'm always getting a 404 error. The bugzilla folder and all containing files are set to apache as the owner. I tried to enter the apache configuration form the installation guide in the http.include file of the domain and in the vhosts.conf file of the subdomain as well. I don't know what to do... Playing with plesks' suexecgroup doesn't bring any solution... I hope you can help me! Thanks in advance!

  WIF with SAML is solid and flexible, but unless you need the power, it can be overkill for simple claim assertion, and in the REST world WIF doesn’t have support for the latest token formats.  Simple Web Token (SWT) may not be around forever, but while it's here it's a nice easy format which you can manipulate in .NET without having to go down the WIF route. Assuming you have set up a Relying Party in ACS, specifying SWT as the token format: When ACS redirects to your login page, it will POST the SWT in the first form variable. You'll need the token signing key from ACS, then you can re-sign the token and compare hashes. There's a full implementation of an SWT parser and validator here: How To Request SWT Token From ACS And How To Validate It At The REST WCF Service Hosted In Windows Azure, and a cut-down claim inspector on my github code gallery: ACS Claim Inspector. Interestingly, ACS lets you have a value for your logged-in page which has no relation to the realm for authentication, so you can put this code into a generic claim inspector page, and set that to be your logged-in page for any relying party where you want to check what's being sent through. Particularly handy with ADFS, when you're modifying the claims provided, and want to quickly see the results.

• Monitor not detected after booting without monitor attached (12.04)

  I had a stable 12.04 machine running perfectly. The machine was booted without the monitor connected - since then the system always boots to low graphics mode. Onboard graphics (from lspci): VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) Monitor: AOC e2450Swh Display widget shows monitor as laptop(!?) and system details shows graphics as Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300) X-server log appears to show correct monitor detected. When I boot from a live CD I get full 3d graphics I've tried the monitor on a different machine - all OK. I've tried a different monitor on this machine - same problem. Between having a working system and a broken one there have been no updates and I have made no configuration changes... EDIT: I have come to the conclusion that the problem is caused by a known issue with lightDM hanging on battery check. I've managed to get 3D graphic working by switching to using GDM - not a solution but acceptable workaround. I would still like to know what is causing the problem and how I managed to get my system into this state!
