  • Why does PostgresQL query performance drop over time, but restored when rebuilding index

    According to this page in the manual, indexes don't need to be maintained. However, we are running with a PostgresQL table that has a continuous rate of updates, deletes and inserts that over time (a few days) sees a significant query degradation. If we delete and recreate the index, query performance is restored. We are using out of the box settings. The table in our test is currently starting out empty and grows to half a million rows. It has a fairly large row (lots of text fields). We are search is based of an index, not the primary key (I've confirmed the index is being used, at least under normal conditions) The table is being used as a persistent store for a single process. Using PostgresQL on Windows with a Java client I'm willing to give up insert and update performance to keep up the query performance. We are considering rearchitecting the application so that data is spread across various dynamic tables in a manner that allows us to drop and rebuild indexes periodically without impacting the application. However, as always, there is a time crunch to get this to work and I suspect we are missing something basic in our configuration or usage. We have considered forcing vacuuming and rebuild to run at certain times, but I suspect the locking period for such an action would cause our query to block. This may be an option, but there are some real-time (windows of 3-5 seconds) implications that require other changes in our code. I have set the MIME type on my server to be: cod application/vnd.rim.cod jad text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor jar application/java-archive When I access the JAD file on my web-server through the BlackBerry Browser, I get the message Unsupported Media Type and then a prompt to download the JAD. How can I resolve this?

    The bit.ly info API returns URLs for thumbnail images. When I attempt to access these images, I receive an access denied error. How do you access the thumbnail images generated by bit.ly? EDIT: I am testing the image URL by taking the URL provided by the info API and using the browser to access. Bit.ly returns an Access Denied error code. Do I need to somehow provide the login and apikey?

    I'm basically pushing a UIView from a UITableViewController and all it contains is a UIWebView.   • jQuery DataTables is messing op my CSS grids in IE8, how to fix?

    I am using ASP.NET MVC3 with the jQuery Datatable plug in. I am having an issues with my CSS layout when the datatable is on a page. If there is no datatable then everything displays fine. When the datatable is on the screen then it overlaps the footer of my website. I can't seem to get this to display correctly. I have a grid layout using the YUI3, and this is what I all use from YUI3 (in this order): cssreset-min cssfonts-min cssgrids-min cssbase-min This works fine in the latest version of FireFox. I am only testing on IE8, this is a requirement and most of the people at my work uses IE8. I have minified my HTML so that only the bare minimum is available.   • Delphi hook to redirect to different ip

    What is the best way to redirect ANY browser to a different ip for specific sites? For example if the user will type www.facebook.com in any browser he will be redirected to 127.0.0.1. Also the same should happen if he will type 66.220.146.11. What I have until now is this: using the winpkfilter I am able to intercept all the traffic on port 80, with type(in or out), source ip, destination ip and packet. My problem is to modify somehow the packet so the browser will be redirected.     IE7/Windows XP I have a third party component in my page that does a lot of DOM manipulation to adjust itself each time the browser window is resized. Unfortunately I have little control of what it does internally and I have optimized everything else (such as callbacks and event handlers) as much as I can. I can't take the component off the flow by setting display:none because it fails measuring itself if I do so. In general, does setting visibility of the container to invisible during the resize help improve DOM rendering performance?

However is the same or similar possible in JavaScript? I understand that the browser handles socket connections and that the SSL handshake occurs prior to any party sending data. However in an XMLHTTPRequest, I'd like to know if its possible to get these details as some sort of response code etc?
