• How to test other DE in Ubuntu 12.10 live (alpha)

  caution: 12.10 is not yet released but I was told it will say as is also when release happens (live session) So, new ubuntu live session does not have option to "logout" and choose different desktop environment (DE). This function was usable if one installs ubuntu live on USB stick with permanent changes. One can install any software, including KDE (plasma) or LXDE. Until including 12.04, one could simply logout and choose different DE. Now, there is no "logout" option in top right menu and if ran service lightdm restart it automatically logs in to live session account with unity.

However you don't have to use the svccfg command in order to configure them, you could still use the old files. However you can't just edit them, you have to import the data into the SMF repository.   Have this question from interview: Web Service function given x static HashMap map (singleton created) if (!map.containsKey(x)) { perform some function to retrieve result y map.put(x, y); } return y; The interviewer asked general question such as what is wrong with this distributed cache implementation. Then asked how to improve on it, due to distributed servers will have different cached key pairs in the map. There are simple mistakes to be pointed out about synchronization and key object, but what really startled me was that this guy thinks that moving to database implementation solves the problem that different servers will have different map content, i.e., the situation when value x is not on server A but on server B, therefore redundant data has to be retrieved in server A. Does his thinking make any sense? (As I understand this is the basic cons for distributed cache against database model, seems he does not understand it at all) What is the typical solution for the cache growth issue (weak reference?) and sync issue (do not know which server has the key already cached - use load balancing)? • Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

  Temenos WealthManager is at work in financial institutions of all sizes. No matter the size, each of Temenos’ customers has one requirement in common: a need for fast technology. This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. Further, Temenos secured a two-times gain in service-level agreements for batch and user-oriented workloads via dedicated or parallelized processing windows. Last year Temenos also communicated the availability of its T24 core banking system and how the benchmark run demonstrated the ability of Oracle’s Exadata platform to comfortably support the highest banking volumes for T24.   Given the following scenario A canned enterprise application that maintains its own connection pool A homegrown client application to the enterprise app. This app is built using Spring framework, with the DAO pattern While I may have a simplistic view of this, I think the following line of thinking is sound: Having a fixed pool of DAO objects, holding on to connection objects from the pool. Clearly, the pool should be capable of scaling up (or down depending on need) and the connection objects must outnumber the DAOs by a healthy margin. Good Instantiating brand new DAOs for every request to access the enterprise app; each DAO will attempt to grab a connection from the pool and release it when it's done. Bad Since these are service objects, there will be no (mutable) state held by the objects (reduced risk of concurrency issues) I also think that with #1, there should be little to no resource contention, while in #2, there'll almost always be a DAO waiting to be serviced. Is my thinking correct and what could go wrong?

See this question.) so that instead of users seeing addresses like labouseur.com/course-compilers.html they can instead see and use simply labouseur.com/course-compilers (Even better, maybe I should restructure that so that it's courses/compilers.) I'm using a Linux-based shared hosting service for my website, so I do not have administrative control of the server, but I do have control over .htaccess. The references I've read online seemed less than clear to me, so I'm looking for a little clarity and advice here. Thanks!

Is there an OSS license that says that you can use the source code etc.. but you cant release a SaaS based on it, esssentially released in good faith with non-compete expectations. e.g. if 37Signals released the source for highrise, basecamp etc.. someone could start 37signals4lesss.com (albeit once they built the same bit of provisioning logic) and damage the core business model.

• SSH refusing connection after changing default port

  currently I'm handling 2 server (A and B). In server A I installed Ubuntu 12.10. I changed the SSH port into 1198 and it works fine. In server B it has been installed with Ubuntu 11.04. I tried to change the port number into 1198 as well but it refused the connection when I tried to connect again using Putty. I change the SSH configuration on /etc/ssh/sshd_config and I did restart the SSH using sudo service ssh restart. I was thinking its because of firewall allowed port but the firewall shows inactive when I run sudo ufw status. Any idea why this can happened?

I do not want other users to be able to see that domaina.com is hosted with domainb.com A way to do it is to use many shared hosting service. Sometimes shared hosting is not powerful enough. Another way is to use multiple VPS, which is acceptable. My VPS provider says that I can accomplish this with cloudfare. However, I am confused on how cloudfare can hide my IP

  I am trying to add an application to my site where I can post job openings with my company and allow people to apply online. Can someone recommend a service or app already in existence for this purpose? I tried googling it, but could not find a set of search terms that did not return endless sites for job seekers. This is a (very) small business and I do not expect to have more than a few openings at any time, but what I am actually interested in is having a repository of interested job seekers to have on file. Then when people ask me about openings, I could just refer them to the page and they could apply. Then, if we have an opening, we could look through the list of candidates and if we can't fill the position(s) from that list, we could post the job and advertise to fill the position.

• Handle php out of memory error

  I have a Drupal based web site on a relative small vserver (512MB RAM). Recently the website begins to return php out of memory messages like this: Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 17039360) (tried to allocate 77824 bytes) in /home/... All php.ini memory limit parameters are set to off (-1). Propably the website has gained of complexity, content, etc. But I cannot interpret fine that message: Does that mean that the whole request has allocated 17MB(?) right now and cannot get 7MB(?) more from the OS. Has the web server spend all memory or has the OS no more memory to allocate ? I'm not shure if the memory overhead is coming from the web server or another service, because when I get the out-of-memoy message I can't get into the server with ssh. After a while all runs fine again.

• What is the good way of sharing specific data between ViewModels

  We have IAppContext which is injected into ViewModel. This service contains shared data: global filters and other application wide properties. But there are cases when data is very specific. For example one VM implements Master and the second one - Details of selected tree item. Thus DetailsVm must know about the selected item and its changes. We can store this information either in IAppContext or inside each concerned VM. In both cases update notifications are sent via Messenger. I see pros and cons for any of the approaches and can not decide which one is better. 1st: + explicitly exposed shared proerties, easy to follow dependencies - IAppContxt becomes cluttered with very specific data. 2nd: the exact opposite of the first and more memory load due to data duplication. May be someone can offer design alternatives or tell that one of the variants is objectively superior to the other cause I miss something important?

• Problem installing NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run in 12.04

  I have a catch 22 problem in trying to install this driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run) to set my screen to its native resolution of 1280x1024 (hpL1906). Problem is that in order to install this driver, I need to stop the XServer but when I do this (sudo service lightdm stop), my screen goes blank and displays the message - Out of Range 1280X1024 need to reset (or something similar) - and I can go no further. So, I cannot install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run without stopping lightdm but when I do so, I can no longer see anything on the screen or go further to install the driver that would let me adjust the resolution. Any advice on getting out of this loop would be greatly appreciated.

• Unity Launcher missing and Terminal shortcut stopped working

  When I restarted my Ubuntu after it being updated, I found the Unity launch bar was gone. I tried looking up several solutions online, blindly typing in the commands that others suggested, and I found after the umpteenth time rebooting after typing in another foreign command, I found I couldn't even open up the terminal with the Ctrl+Alt+t shortcut either and I have no idea how to fix this. This was the last set of instructions I remember following before terminal stopped opening. Install CCSM sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager And then run it in terminal (Ctrl+Alt+t) ccsm Then search for "Ubuntu Unity Plugin". If it's not checked, check it. If it is checked you may have another issue. Try restarting compiz: kill -9pidof compiz` This will kill it, it should start up again, if it doesn't, CTRL+ALT+F2 and then type: sudo service lightdm restart to restart the window manager. Go back to the terminal and run: unity --reset

  So I'm writing a web service architecture which includes FunctionProvider classes which do the actual processing of requests, and a main Endpoint class which receives and delegates requests to the proper FunctionProvider. I don't know exactly the FunctionProviders available at runtime, so I need to be able to 'register' (if that's the right word) them with my main Endpoint class, and query them to see if they match an incoming request. public class MyFunc implements FunctionProvider{ static { MyEndpoint.register(MyFunc); } public Boolean matchesRequest(Request req){...} public void processRequest(Request req){...} } public class MyEndpoint{ private static ArrayList<FunctionProvider> functions = new ArrayList<FunctionProvider>(); public void register(Class clz){ functions.add(clz); } public void doPost(Request request){ //find the FunctionProvider in functions //matching the request } } I've really not done much reflective Java like this (and the above is likely wrong, but hopefully demonstrates my intentions). What's the nicest way to implement this without getting hacky?

• Permissions scheme not working

  I am currently building a home server and I am trying to give minimal permissions to every service. I am new to permissions management and this is an awesome learning experience for me :). drwxr----- 7 reazem enter-home 4096 Sep 9 21:43 reazem drwxrws--- 3 reazem minidlna 4096 Sep 9 21:36 media reazem is my home folder and media is my media folder, it is situated directly inside my home. The minidlna user is part of the following groups : minidlna, enter-home. I get the following error: Media directory not accessible! [/home/reazem/media] I was hoping that because the minidlna user is part of the enter-home group, it could get inside the home folder, and then inside the media folder because it is in the minidlna group. Where is my mistake? Edit: I found out that chmod g+x /home/reazem solved the problem, but why? Why would you need the execute permission to get inside another directory? Thank you!
