    How many people, when their car shows signs of wear and tear, would consider upgrading the engine and keeping the shell? Even if you're cash-strapped, you'll soon work out the subtlety of the economics, the cost of sudden breakdowns, the precious time lost coping with the hassle, and the low 'book value'. You'll generally buy a new car. The same philosophy should apply to database systems. Mainstream support for SQL Server 2005 ends on April 12; many DBAS, if they haven't done so already, will be considering the migration to SQL Server 2008 R2. Hopefully, that upgrade plan will include a fresh install of the operating system on brand new hardware. SQL Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are designed to work together. The improved architecture, processing power, and hyper-threading capabilities of modern processors will dramatically improve the performance of many SQL Server workloads, and allow consolidation opportunities. Of course, there will be many DBAs smiling ruefully at the suggestion of such indulgence. This is nothing like the real world, this halcyon place where hardware and software budgets are limitless, development and testing resources are plentiful, and third party vendors immediately certify their applications for the latest-and-greatest platform! As with cars, or any other technology, the justification for a complete upgrade is complex. With Servers, the extra cost at time of upgrade will generally pay you back in terms of the increased performance of your business applications, reduced maintenance costs, training costs and downtime. Also, if you plan and design carefully, it's possible to offset hardware costs with reduced SQL Server licence costs. In his forthcoming SQL Server Hardware book, Glenn Berry describes a recent case where he was able to replace 4 single-socket database servers with one two-socket server, saving about $90K in hardware costs and $350K in SQL Server license costs. Of course, there are exceptions. If you do have a stable, reliable, secure SQL Server 6.5 system that still admirably meets the needs of a specific business requirement, and has no security vulnerabilities, then by all means leave it alone. Why upgrade just for the sake of it? However, as soon as a system shows sign of being unfit for purpose, or is moving out of mainstream support, the ruthless DBA will make the strongest possible case for a belts-and-braces upgrade. The AIS Live Ships Map website captures real-time Marine Traffic updates using a Google Maps interface. While it is possible to obtain data from an AIS data feed, often the feeds are either pay-for-use, or otherwise encumbered with license restrictions. Problem The AIS Live Ships website presents a map in the browser: The map above has had its location interactively changed to focus on the area in question: the northern straight of Vancouver Island. Question How would you create a service that captures the map every 30 minutes and that could run, with neither user-intervention nor a significant memory footprint, for a few years? Idea #1 Create a virtual machine. Install and run a light-weight browser. Use Shutter to take captures at regular intervals. Idea #2 Use Python's Ghost Webkit to automate the captures. Thank you!

    I have created a blog on blogger few days ago and created two blog entries on it. when i try creating AdSense account with blog's address it does not accept the application due to PageType. i have searched around on the net and found that its probably due to duplicate or insufficient content on the blog but either of my blog entry is more than 2,000 words and i have literally typed 80 percent of its content with only few code blocks copied from other sites. Below is content of email i received as response to my application. Hello, Thank you for your interest in Google AdSense. Unfortunately, after reviewing your application, we're unable to accept you into AdSense at this time. We did not approve your application for the reasons listed below.   • change default port of IIS and let another process to listen on port 80 (Windows Server 2008)

    I have an installation of Windows Server 2008 running IIS 6 with a website listening on port 8080, even though I have moved the website to listen on 8080, port 80 is still kept in use by IIS (for truth by the kernel process : System - ProcId : 4). I want to let another process listen on port 80 without uninstalling or disabling IIS, I want to keep IIS listening on port 8080 and another service on port 80, is there a way to do it? I saw another similar thread here on serverfault but the solution (using httpcfg.exe delete iplisten -i 0.0.0.0:80 ) can work only in 2003 because in 2008 the utility httpcfg.exe doesn't exist and it seems that it cannot be installed ... Does anyone have a solution to get rid of the kernel listening on port 80 in Windows Server 2008 with IIS running?

  • Strange characters appearing on websites - ASCII? - UNICODE?

    I have created many very simple pure HTML websites over the years. Most of them appear to work fine most of the time. But there is one recurring problem which I have never quite sorted out involving strange characters. The scenario goes like this: I create the site. I look at it in my browser, everything appears fine. I may look at it a great many times over the coming weeks or months as I make additions here and there. Perhaps on a variety of browsers on a variety of PC's. Then one day I look at the page and see a random sprinkling of white question marks against dark diamond shapes. These might appear where I had expected to see hyphens or quotes or apostrophes. My immediate thought is that my browser got into some strange state because I was looking at some foreign website with strange characters, but I'm never quite sure. I'm left with that nagging feeling that perhaps half the planet is seeing my website with funny question marks all over it. So my question is what's going on? What should I do to ensure that as many people as possible around the world can view my text as I originally intended? Should I be using those special html sequences like &pound; for all non alphanumeric characters? Should I worry at all? Edit: Right now I have the problem occurring on this page: http://www.fullreservebanking.com/papers.htm ... part of it looks like this: I am using FireFox 5 and the character encoding currently appears to be "UNICODE (UTF-8)". I do not remember manually setting the character encoding to anything since installation. I do occasionally look at Japanese websites for work related reasons - though when I do so, I do not manually make any changes to firefox settings. Edit: Now fixed. Web page altered accordingly.

  • Phishing attack stuck with jsp loginAction.do page?

    I'm testing a phishing website on a staged replica of an jsp web-application. I'm doing the usual attack which involves changing the post and action field of source code to divert to my own written jsp script capture the logins and redirect the victim to the original website. It looks easy, but trust me, it's has been me more then 2 weeks and I cannot write the logins to the text file. I have tested the jsp page on my local wamp server it works fine. In staged, when I click on the ok button for user/password field I'm taken to loginAction.do script. I checked this using the tamper data add-on on Firefox. The only way I was able to make my script run was to use burp proxy intercept the request and change action parameter to refer my uploaded script. I want to know what does an loginAction.do? I have googled it - it's quite common to see it in jsp application. I have checked the code; there is nothing that tells me why the page always points to the .do script instead of mine. Is there some kind of redirection in Tomcat? I like to know. I'm unable to exploit this attack vector? I need the community's help.

  • What kind of server do I need to handle 10 million requests and mySQL queries a day?

    I'm a new bie of server administration and I'm looking for a powerful hosting service to host my new website. This website is basically a back-end of an mobile online game, and it will: handle up to 10 million of HTTPS request and mySQL queries a day store up to 2000 GB file on the hard disk transfer probably 5000 GB data in and out per month it runs on PHP and mySQL have 10 million records in mySQL database, for each record there are 5-10 fields, around 100 bytes each I really don't know what kind of a server I need to handle these requirements, my question is: what cpu/ram do I need for a dedicated server or vps? what hosting companies are able to offer this kind of dedicated server or VPS? what about cloud computing? I've researched Amazon EC2 but it seems complicated to me. And I've contacted Rackspace but strangely they said Cloudsites is not suitable for my requirements. I wonder if there is other cloud hosting company. any other alternative method? thanks very much!

  • Please help me give this principle a name

    As a designer, I like providing interfaces that cater to a power/simplicity balance. For example, I think the LINQ designers followed that principle because they offered both dot-notation and query-notation. The first is more powerful, but the second is easier to read and follow. If you disagree with my assessment of LINQ, please try to see my point anyway; LINQ was just an example, my post is not about LINQ. I call this principle "dial-able power". But I'd like to know what other people call it. Certainly some will say "KISS" is the common term. But I see KISS as a superset, or a "consumerism" practice. Using LINQ as my example again, in my view, a team of programmers who always try to use query notation over dot-notation are practicing KISS. Thus the LINQ designers practiced "dial-able power", whereas the LINQ consumers practice KISS. The two make beautiful music together. I'll give another example. Imagine a C# logging tool that has two signatures allowing two uses: void Write(string message); void Write(Func<string> messageCallback); The purpose of the two signatures is to fulfill these needs: //Every-day "simple" usage, nothing special. myLogger.Write("Something Happened" + error.ToString() ); //This is performance critical, do not call ToString() if logging is //disabled. myLogger.Write( () => { "Something Happened" + error.ToString() }); Having these overloads represents "dial-able power," because the consumer has the choice of a simple interface or a powerful interface. A KISS-loving consumer will use the simpler signature most of the time, and will allow the "busy" looking signature when the power is needed. This also helps self-documentation, because usage of the powerful signature tells the reader that the code is performance critical. If the logger had only the powerful signature, then there would be no "dial-able power." So this comes full-circle. I'm happy to keep my own "dial-able power" coinage if none yet exists, but I can't help think I'm missing an obvious designation for this practice. p.s. Another example that is related, but is not the same as "dial-able power", is Scott Meyer's principle "make interfaces easy to use correctly, and hard to use incorrectly."

  • File saving disabled 'Saving has been disabled by system admin'

    I have coded my own html website recently, and today wished to add a Google calender object to it. I have not put this website on the web because it is for my own personal use and I can't buy a domain. So I just have a folder on my pc that I load the index.html from now and then. As I was saying, today I got an error while trying to save the Google calender object in. I am system admin on my PC, in fact no one else uses but me, except when I have friends round, but for once my PC seems to think I'm some standard account user, because I couldn't save. I thought of clicking close and seeing if it came up with save as, but it didn't, it said 'Are you sure you want to close without saving?' or something along the lines of that, and 'Saving has been disabled by your system admin.' I couldn't do anything. I tried looking at the settings of the file, and it had me as read only in one of the selections, so I changed that to read & write, but to no avail. I did not save as root when I last edited the file, so I don't get what's going on. Help! P.S. This is on Ask Ubuntu not Superuser because it is on my Ubuntu PC and it appears to be a problem with Ubuntu not root or hardware.

I asked before a question about this: http://serverfault.com/questions/13906/how-to-fix-subfolders-iis7-functionality But i feel that no one is facing this problem except me, so i want to know what i am doing wrong or if someone had the same problem please tell me. all my website are in subfolders from the root folder, the problem that all links are showing like this: www.example.com/example/...., www.anotherwebsite.com/anotherwebsite/.... such as this http://amrelgarhy.com/ Means the folder name is showing in the URL, i did all what i can and discussed with godaddy a lot, but they always tell that its a IIS7 problem. Did you face this problem before or know a solution for?

  • No option to select ASP.Net Version in IIS 6?

    I'm running Windows Server 2003 64bit edition. I've just installed the .Net 4 Framework in order to get a new WCF service up and running. However, I have no options anywhere in IIS 6 for selecting the ASP.Net framework version. I.e. Right click Properties on the website should have as ASP.Net tab from where I should be able to select v2 or v4. Does anyone know why they're not there and how I can make them appear? For the time being I've had to go into Website Properties Home Directory Configuration and change the .svc extension to use v4.0.30319 instead. So, everything's now working for my WCF service, however every other extension is set to v2. How can I get the tab? It's not visible on any of my 23 websites.
