• MonthCalendar control selection range with EnableVisualStyles?

  I'm using the MonthCalendar control and want to programmatically select a date range. When I do so the control doesn't paint properly if Application.EnableVisualStyles() has been called. This is a known issue according to MSDN. Using the MonthCalendar with visual styles enabled will cause a selection range for the MonthCalendar control to not paint correctly (from: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.forms.monthcalendar.aspx) Is there really no fix for this other than not calling EnableVisualStyles? This seems to make that particular control entirely useless for a range of applications and a rather glaring oversight from my perspective.

• Display continious dates in Pivot Chart

  I have a set of data in a pivot table with date times and events. I've made a pivot chart with this data, and grouped the data by day and year, then display a count of events for each day. So, my horizontal axis goes from 19 March 2007 to 11 May 2010, and my vertical axis is numeric, going from zero to 140. For some days, I have zero events. These days don't seem to be shown on the horizontal axis, so 2008 is narrower than 2009. How do I display a count of zero for days with no events? I'd like my horizontal axis to be continuous, so that it does not miss any days, and every month ends up taking up the same amount of horizontal space. (This question is similar to the unanswered question here, but I'd rather not generate a table of all the days in the last x number of years just to get a smooth plot!)

  I have a simple windows application that pops up an input box for users to enter in a date to do searches. How do I identify if the user clicked on the Cancel button, or merely pressed OK without entering any data as both appear to return the same value? I have found some examples of handling this in VB 6 but none of them really function in the .NET world. Ideally I would like to know how to handle the empty OK and the Cancel seperately, but I would be totally ok with just a good way to handle the cancel.

  My model is similar to this. Is this ok or should I make the common base class abstract? What are the differcenes between this or makeing it abstract and not having an extra table? I would like to use ggplot to plot the barplot mean of the time series of val1,val2,... for each type. One plot for each type except for ccc and ddd that should be considered as one type, so for this I should first sum up the value, then take the mean, then plot). So three plot at the end. I can't seem to find a good way to capture that a date column in Oracle has a null value. Is there any way to cast a [datetime] as null or empty?

So, in the following situation, I create a feature branch, and there are commits to the trunk E---F---G Feature / A---B---C---D--H--I trunk I'm looking for a tool which copies the trunk, and applies the commits one by one, letting me resolve any conflicts if any exist - but each commit retains the same commit message, and is still a separate commit. E'---F'---G' Feature / A---B---C---D--H--I trunk So commit E' will be a commit with the same changes as E, except in the case of E causing a conflict, in which case E' will differ from E in that E' has the conflicts resolved, and the same commit message as E. I'm looking for this as it helps in keeping branches up to date with trunk - the svnmerge.py / mergeinfo way does not help, as you still need to resolve your changes when you merge back to trunk.

• Co-opt popular abandonware opensource project? Thoughts?

  Here's the scenario: A popular open source project is used/loved by many but has become stale due to the fact that the last drop came out nearly a year ago. Many bugs/feature requests/fixes have been logged in the interim and everyone is getting by via downloading the trunk and building custom/private builds with the changes incorporated. The copyright is simple -- there is none and the code is in the public domain. The project owner spins the project as community open source and has setup a sourceforge site, but to date (5 years running now) has yet to accept one contributor. In otherwords the "community" is a community of one. The project owner takes great pride in the project and has obviously contributed a lot of time/effort but for whatever reason has has seemingly abandoned the project and is unresponsive when offers of help are made. So, the question, should the community fork the codebase, setup a new community site, and take matters in their own hands?

• Any Problems Using Samba as a Windows Domain Controller?

  We're looking to run a Windows domain using Samba+OpenLDAP on Ubuntu as a domain controller. The documentation out there is a bit spotty and out of date, especially when it comes to installation, which features are supported, and how well. Once this is set up, we hope to be able to use integrated authentication of our IIS sites (including Sharepoint) against the domain controller. Anyone out there who has done this already? Anything specific we should watch out for? Or is it not worth the hassle of trying to set up?

• Excel isn't reading sql exported csv properly

  I have a batch file that calls sqlcmd to run a command and then export the data as a csv. When viewed in a cell the trasancted date for example shows 35:30.0 but if you click on it the formula bar shows 1/1/1900 2:45:00 PM. I need the full timestamp to show in the cell. Any ideas? The batch file is the following sqlcmd -S server -U username -P password -d database -i "D:\path\sqlScript.sql" -s "," > D:\path\report.csv -I -W -k 1 The script is the following. Now I currently have them cast as varchars, but that's simply because i've tried to change it a bit. Varchar doesn't work either. What I am trying to do is find out how many milliseconds is left in the song play time.   in my php code I was asking the user to choose day, month and year from some dropdown fields where values where 1, 2, 3 etc instead of 01, 02, 03. these were then combined to form a string like "YYYY-MM-DD" for the insertion in a db (in a date field). Having missed the initial 0, I thought I was sending strings in the wrong format, eg "YYYY-M-D" or YYYY-MM-D", but then I've noticed they appear in the right format in the database anyway: even if I submitted YYYY-M-D, it appeared as YYYY-MM-DD. is this the normal behaviour of mysql? if so, can i just avoid worrying about changing the code in my application?

  I was wondering if one can allow spaces in a textfield when checking it with ctype_alpha. Since ctype_alpha only allows alphabetical letters, I don't know how to let the user enter space in the field. I did try using ctype_space but that didn't work. I simply want the user to be able to type only alphabets and they have a choice to include spaces if they "wish." I hope I will not have to use regexp as I am very new to all of this and hope to learn it at a later date. • Scheduled cron job to check for pending activity

  Using PHP ... This is for my personal use so I'm thinking maybe 3-4 emails a day. I'm at a point where I can send an email to a dedicated email address where my script parses the message and stores it into a DB. Now, I need to figure out the best way to check the records in the DB for any upcoming task. I feel like I'm missing something, maybe like a trigger field as to when a reminder should go out. However, that's not a concern to me at the moment since I'll just send an alert 15 mins prior to the due date. Question is, shoudl I run a cron job that queries the DB every minute? I take it the query will have to say something like "select all tasks that is due within 15 minutes."

  I'm having a problem with a JEE6 application running in a clustered environment using WebSphere ApplicationServer 8. A search index is used for quick search in the UI (using Lucene), which must be re-indexed after new data arrived in the corresponding DB layer. To achieve this we're sending a JMS message to the application, then the search index will be refreshed. The problem is, that the messages only arrives at one of the cluster members. So only there the search index is up to date. At the other servers it remains outdated. How can I achieve that the search index gets updated at all cluster members? Can I receive the message somehow on all servers? Or is there a better way to do this?
