• Cannot mount one usb disc, although other mounts automatically after 12.10 upgrade

  Since upgrading to 12.10, switching on or attempting to mount one of my usb hard drives gives this error message: Error mounting system-managed device /dev/sdg1: Command-line `mount "/mnt/usb-ST350041_8AS_60CAFFFFFFFF-0:0-part1"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdg1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so dmesg | tail gives (inter alia): [ 1080.727830] sdg: sdg1 [ 1080.732003] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdg] Attached SCSI disk [ 1081.383633] FAT-fs (sdg1): Unrecognized mount option "x-gvfs-show" or missing value [ 1871.160973] sdg: sdg1 The drive cannot be mounted, but is recognized by the system as a "place". I am not a technical bod; I cannot take this further myself and any help would be much appreciated.

• How to use Btrfs with compression on external USB hard drive?

  I would like to make use of Btrfs' transparent compression on an external drive. Which tool is best for formatting the drive? Disk Utility or GParted? How do I activate the compression? During formatting or when I mount the drive? I guess at mount time. I'm using usbmount to automatically mount newly attached devices, because nobody is logged in on the desktop. Would I have to set general default options somewhere in a system configuration file to get Btrfs mounted with compression, or would I specify this via FS_MOUNTOPTIONS in /etc/usbmount/usbmount.conf and how? Thanks!

Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2006 Auto Generate Script to Delete Deprecated Fields in Current Database In early career everytime I have to drop a column, I had hard time doing it because I was scared what if that column was needed somewhere in the code. Due to this fear I never dropped any column. I just renamed the column. If the column which I renamed was needed afterwards it was very easy to rename it back again. However, it is not recommended to keep the deleted column renamed in the database. At every interval I used to drop the columns which was prefixed with specific word. This script is 6 years old but still works. Give it a look, I am open for improvements. 2007 Shrinking Truncate Log File – Log Full – Part 2 Shrinking database or mdf file is indeed bad thing and it creates lots of problems. However, once in a while there is legit requirement to shrink the log file – a very rare one. In the rare occasion shrinking or truncating the log file may be the only solution. However, one should make sure to take backup before and after the truncate or shrink as in case of a disaster they can be very useful. Remember that truncating log file will break the log chain and while restore it can create major issue. Anyway, use this feature with caution. 2008 Simple Use of Cursor to Print All Stored Procedures of Database Including Schema This is a very interesting requirement I used to face in my early career days, I needed to print all the Stored procedures of my database. Interesting enough I had written a cursor to do so. Today when I look back at this stored procedure, I believe there will be a much cleaner way to do the same task, however, I still use this SP quite often when I have to document all the stored procedures of my database. Interesting Observation about Order of Resultset without ORDER BY In industry many developers avoid using ORDER BY clause to display the result in particular order thinking that Index is enforcing the order. In this interesting example, I demonstrate that without using ORDER BY, same table and similar query can return different results. Query optimizer always returns results using any method which is optimized for performance. The learning is There is no order unless ORDER BY is used. 2009 Size of Index Table – A Puzzle to Find Index Size for Each Index on Table I asked this puzzle earlier where I asked how to find the Index size for each of the tables. The puzzle was very well received and lots of interesting answers were received. To answer this question I have written following blog posts. I suggest this weekend you try to solve this problem and see if you can come up with a better solution. If not, well here are the solutions. Solution 1 | Solution 2 | Solution 3 Understanding Table Hints with Examples Hints are options and strong suggestions specified for enforcement by the SQL Server query processor on DML statements. The hints override any execution plan the query optimizer might select for a query. The SQL Server Query optimizer is a very smart tool and it makes a better selection of execution plan. Interesting Observation – TOP 100 PERCENT and ORDER BY I have seen developers and DBAs using TOP very causally when they have to use the ORDER BY clause. Theoretically, there is no need of ORDER BY in the view at all. All the ordering should be done outside the view and view should just have the SELECT statement in it. It was quite common that to save this extra typing by including ordering inside of the view. At several instances developers want a complete resultset and for the same they include TOP 100 PERCENT along with ORDER BY, assuming that this will simulate the SELECT statement with ORDER BY. 2010 SQLPASS Nov 8-11, 2010-Seattle – An Alternative Look at Experience In year 2010 I attended most prestigious SQL Server event SQLPASS between Nov 8-11, 2010 at Seattle. When I go back and read it, I feel that this is the best event I attended in year 2010. • How did craigspro license Craigslist content? [closed]

  There's an app called craigspro that provides a much better interface to Craigslist on mobile devices. They claim that the app is Officially Licensed by Craigslist, but I thought Craigslist never licensed their content, and the only thing I can find on the subject in the terms of use is this: Any copying, aggregation, display, distribution, performance or derivative use of craigslist or any content posted on craigslist whether done directly or through intermediaries (including but not limited to by means of spiders, robots, crawlers, scrapers, framing, iframes or RSS feeds) is prohibited. As a limited exception, general purpose Internet search engines and noncommercial public archives will be entitled to access craigslist without individual written agreements executed with CL that specifically authorize an exception to this prohibition if ... Does anyone know how do get a "written agreement" with Craigslist, and roughly what their terms would be? Do they charge a fee, or just check that you're not evil? I'll try next with Craigslist directly, but I'd like to get a sense of the landscape before stumbling in.

So is it better to add all test methods in the same ruby file, or I should put each one in separated code files? I really recommend it, specially if you work with these tools (BPEL, SOA Suite and/or OSB), if you are a SOA Architect and/or if your work is focused on production environments.This book provides valuable and useful information for monitoring and automation tasks.In the books is very clearly explained and with screenshots (which makes it even easier to read, understand and follow) how to perform several tasks that are necessary to keep a correct performance on the production environments and the subtasks that must be executed on them.The test sections on chapters 3, 10 and 13 (SOAP tests for partner links and BPEL processes, service tests on web applications, and SOAP test OSB proxy and business service endpoints) look specially interesting for me and I really liked to see that there is special emphasis on the use of WebLogic Server as well.For further information and order the book, please go to the Packt Publishing web site.

• Migrating from GlassFish 2.x to 3.1.x

  With clustering now available in GlassFish since version 3.1 (our Spring 2011 release), a good number of folks have been looking at migrating their existing GlassFish 2.x-based clustered environments to a more recent version to take advantage of Java EE 6, our modular design, improved SSH-based provisioning and enhanced HA performance. The GlassFish documentation set is quite extensive and has a dedicated Upgrade Guide. It obviously lists a number of small changes such as file layout on disk (mostly due to modularity), some option changes (grizzly, shoal), the removal of node agents (using SSH instead), new JPA default provider name, etc... There is even a migration tool (glassfish/bin/asupgrade) to upgrade existing domains. But really the only thing you need to know is that each module in GlassFish 3 and beyond is responsible for doing its part of the upgrade job which means that the migration is as simple as copying a 2.x domain directory to the domains/ directory and starting the server with asadmin start-domain --upgrade. Binary-compatible products eligible for such upgrades include Sun Java System Application Server 9.1 Update 2 as well as version 2.1 and 2.1.1 of Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server.

• Install unetbootin on Ubuntu 12.04

  I'm trying to install UNetbootin on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I downloaded the executable file from this link and followed the instructions below: If using Linux, make the file executable (using either the command chmod +x ./unetbootin-linux, or going to Properties-Permissions and checking "Execute"), then start the application, you will be prompted for your password to grant the application administrative rights, then the main dialog will appear, where you select a distribution and install target (USB Drive or Hard Disk), then reboot when prompted.\ So I typed on my terminal sudo chmod +x unetbootin-linux-584 and tried to execute the binary file with ./unetbootin-linux-584 but got this output: ./unetbootin-linux-584: error while loading shared libraries: libXrandr.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory However when I checked for libraries libXrandr on my system I actually found them $> locate libXrandr /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr.so.2 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr.so.2.2.0 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr_ltsq.so.2 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr_ltsq.so.2.2.0 so I really don't have a clue of what's the problem and how can I fix it, any ideas?

• Can static and dynamically typed languages be seen as different tools for different types of jobs?

  Yes, similar questions have been asked but always with the aim of finding out 'which one is better.' I'm asking because I came up as a dev primarily in JavaScript and don't really have any extensive experience writing in statically typed languages. In spite of this I definitely see value in learning C for handling demanding operations at lower levels of code (which I assume has a lot to do with static vs dynamic at the compiler level), but what I'm trying to wrap my head around is whether there are specific project contexts (maybe certain types of dynamic data-intensive operations?) involving things other than performance where it makes a lot more sense to go with Java or C# vs. something like Python.

• Limited resource practice problems?

  I'm applying for some big companies and the areas I seem to be getting burned on is problems involving limited memory, disk-space or throughput. These large companies process GBs of data every second (or more), and they need efficient ways of managing all that data. I have no experience with this as none of the projects I have worked on have grown that large. Is there a good place to learn about or practice these sorts of problems? Most of the practice-problem sites I've encountered only have problems where you have to solve something efficiently (usually involving prime numbers) but none of them limit your resources.

• Can't boot freshly burned Ubuntu cd

  So I just burned a Ubuntu 12.04.1 powerpc .iso on a cd for my iMac G5 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and it won't even recognize the cd. I burned it on my dad's Windows 7 laptop as the process is way easier (just 2 clicks). Mac OS X 10.4.11 gives me an error when it starts and when the CD is in saying "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". What's funny is that I burned a Ubuntu Minimal .iso on a CD and it would totally read that and even boot it though it gave me some errors afterwards and I couldn't install. I even tried going into openfirmware and hitting boot cd:,\tbxi but I get the error "Warning sector size mismatch can't OPEN cd:,\tbxi Can't open device or file" Was there something wrong with the .iso I burned? Mac OS X 10.4.11 won't even mount that .iso it tells me that the HFS file system is corrupt or something, but I know the .iso doesn't contain HFS file system. Any help? I downloaded the .iso from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-powerpc.iso

• Ubuntu - Black Screen After Suspend

  I used Ubuntu with no problems and I upgraded to 11.10 and everything was fine. But when I did my first suspend I was not able to boot again, all I got was a black screen no bios screen, nothing just blank, I tried doing hard reset but when I power on again same happens. I tried ctrl+alt+delete F1-F12 but i think the keyboard is not working, also tried booting from CD but all I got was blank screen, the hard disk light is not blinking at all so i'm assuming it's not trying to boot. My laptop is Toshiba satellite with ATI Radeon graphics. Hibernate was working fine though. I searched the net for solutions but with no luck. Any ideas?

• Windows7 Gone after Ubuntu dual boot install

  I had a very hard time to dual boot install Ubuntu 12.04 Apparently, Ubuntu has restriction of 4 partitions and I already had 4, so it just couldn't recognise my partitions. This was something I realised too late, but finally got to install Ubuntu. Now, even though Windows 7 option is listed when I try to boot my laptop, it doesn't really let me boot and just loops back to begin. I tried windows repair DVD also, didn't work. I was fine with complete fresh install of windows too, but Windows CD didn't detect my Hard Disk Drive or any partitions (even though the original C drive with Windows is still an NTFS partition, according to gParted, and I can access the data from same using Ubuntu log in). My Ubuntu works fine, but I need windows log in also. Any suggestions anyone?

Aug 30 14:10:11 ubuntu kernel: [ 122.378292] EXT4-fs (sda11): warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended Aug 30 14:10:11 ubuntu kernel: [ 122.387488] EXT4-fs (sda11): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null) /dev/sda11 is not mounted within my current OS (Ubuntu 10.04) I have known that e2fsck is a dangerous command when running against the root partition which is at the same hard disk as sda11. I would trust in this solution better than others: Can I run fsck or e2fsck when Linux file system is mounted?

  I am using an external USB hard drive for a long time in Ubuntu 10.04, both at work and at home. Now I've installed 12.04 at home. Today I used the USB drive for the first time. I can read the disk but can't change the permissions of a file I wanted. Output of "mount" /dev/sdb1 on /media/FREECOM HDD type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077, utf8=1,showexec,flush,uhelper=udisks) What I try sudo chmod u+w bsst-hdf_to_bsst-h5 and what I get -rw-r--r-- 1 paco paco 2956 dic 19 10:27 bsst-hdf_to_bsst-h5 Any idea would be appreciated. Then I went away for 2 days and in my absence I don't know what happened in that period, now both Windows 7 and Ubuntu keep hanging continuously, like when you paint and change a brush it'll hang, I mean on very simple commands and I know my computer does not hang on such petty things. I use it for developing music and the specification are: Model: DELL-XPS Processor: Intel i5, 2.53 GHz RAM/Memory: 4GB Hard disk size: 500GB HDD Windows 7 partition: 417 GB Ubuntu Partition: 50 GB Please Help.

• Expanding on requestaudit - Tracing who is doing what...and for how long

  One of the most helpful tracing sections in WebCenter Content (and one that is on by default) is the requestaudit tracing.  This tracing section summarizes the top service requests happening in the server along with how they are performing.  By default, it has 2 different rotations.  One happens every 2 minutes (listing up to 5 services) and another happens every 60 minutes (listing up to 20 services).  These traces provide the total time for all the requests against that service along with the number of requests and its average request time.  This information can provide a good start in possibly troubleshooting performance issues or tracking a particular issue.   [Read More]

• Use of Service Bus in a Pub-Sub Engine

  In one of our projects, we've built a Publisher - Subscriber Engine on Oracle Service Bus. The functionality being a series of events are published and subscribers (JMS queues) receive these whenever a new event is published. We are facing some technical issues now, performance-wise and hence an architectural review is underway. Now for my questions: Architecturally the ESB has to publish events into a DB and read from the DB which users wish to be notified, then push the event onto their respective queues. There is a high amount of DB interaction and the question is whether ESB should be having such high amount of interaction with the DB in the first place? Or should there have been some alternate component responsible for doing this. Alternately is there any non-DB approach in which we can store the events and subscribers? Where else can this application data be held within the ESB context?
