• Cladogram, tree of life, cladistics, taxonomy in JS or canvas?

  Good people - I need some help to find a way to create an interactive cladogram or phylogenetic tree (yes, I have read all related posts, and do not find what I am looking for). The thing is, I need the nodes to be name-able. An example would be something like this Most scripts I find are either applets, flash, or simply do not show the node classification, ie it would skip "feliformia" in this example. This is useless to me, as I would then end up with carnivore - anonymous node - anonymous node - anonymous node - tiger, and that is not good. This tree will in theory cover all life, so it could get rather large, and get links and names in english and latin from database. So: no flash, no applets. It must be horizontal, no supertrees (circular). I have gone through this http://bioinfo.unice.fr/biodiv/Tree_editors.html but most of them seems to be either old, not displaying sub-node levels, applets, or way too complex. I imagine this would be a delightful job for canvas/jQuery..? And chances are, someone got there before me? Any pointers much appreciated. Note: if anyone out there would like to do something like this as a project, I will be happy to help, even though it would not benefit me for this project.This type of taxonomy is not as simple as it may seem, and I would be happy see this happen.

Currently I'm using reflection and I map between the xml and my objects using the naming conventions.

  I'm using VSTS 2K8 and I've set up a Unit Test Project. In it, I have a test class with a method that does a simple assertion. I'm using an Excel 2007 spreadsheet as my data source. In it, the sheet where all of my data is located is named "Sheet1". I've copied the Excel spreadsheet into my project and I've set its Build Action = "Content" and I've set its Copy to Output Directory = "Copy if Newer". When trying to run this simple unit test, I receive the following error: The unit test adapter failed to connect to the data source or to read the data. • How to checkout from SVN with an ANT task?

  I'm interested in any way that I can create an Ant task to checkout files from SubVersion. I "just" want to do the checkout from the command line. I've been using Eclipse with Ant and SubVersion for a while now, but my Ant and SubVersion knowledge is somewhat lacking as I relied on Eclipse to wire it all together. I've been looking at SvnAnt as one solution, which is part of Subclipse from Tigris at http://subclipse.tigris.org/svnant/svn.html. It may work fine, but all I get are NoClassDefFoundErrors. To the more experienced this probably looks like a simple Ant configuration problem, but I don't know about that. I copied the svnant.jar and svnclientadapter.jar into my Ant lib directory. • Architectural conundrum

  The worst thing when working on a one man project is the lack of input that you usually get from your coworkers. And because of the lack of that you tend to make obvious mistakes. After going down that road for some time I would need some help from the community. I started a little home-brew project that should turn into a portal of some sorts. And the main thing that is bothering me is the persistence layer that i have concocted. It should be completely separated from the presentation layer for starters and a OR mapper is also somewhere. This is because I have multiple data stores that have to be used. So the base idea was that the individual "repositories" operate each on their individual database and that the business layer then aggregates the business objects which are then transformed in the presentation layer into view objects. The main problem I face is the following: Multiple classes for the same concept - There is a DAL representation of a user and BL representation of user and a view representation of a user. I can handle the transformation with a tool but is this really the right way. I mean they are all nicely separated, but the overhead is quite something. What do you think? Am I going too deep into the separation of concern rabbit hole or is this still normal?

• How to configure outgoing connections from an SQL stored procedure?

  I am working on a .NET project which uses Microsoft SQL server. In this project, I need a CLR stored procedure (written in C#) that uses a remote web service. So, when the stored procedure is executed on the SQL server, it makes web service calls and thus sends packets to a remote location. The problem is that when executing the SP I get: "System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 403: Forbidden." The database user has full permission, the deployed CLR assembly and SP are even marked "unsafe", I tried signing it etc., so any of that is not causing the problem. When I am executing the very same C# code, but from a simple console application instead of as a SP, it all works fine. So I started to suspect a network related problem and had a packet sniffer running when executing both the SP and the console app version. What I realized was that the packets sent out had different destination IP addresses: the console app sent the packets directly to the web service IP while the SP sent the packets to a proxy server we use in our company. Due to network policies the latter is not allowed and that explains the "403 Forbidden" exception. So my question boils down to this: How can I configure the SP/MS SQL server to NOT use that proxy? I want it to send the packets directly to the web service IP, just like the test console app. (again, the C# code is the same , so it's not a programming matter). I've disabled all proxy settings in Internet Explorer in case the SQL server inherits these settings or something. However, no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Best regards, Peter

• Zend Framework or CakePHP?

  My group is going to attempt to build a new CMS from scratch, designed to serve the needs of our organization. It should be noted that none of us have any formal programming education, but we've picked up this and that from developing different websites, among others the one our community uses now. We've decided to program the new CMS in PHP, with total MVC seperation. Not wanting to re-invent all the little cogs and wheels needed for such a potentially large project as this, we've been looking into using a PHP framework, and some googling and blog-surfing landed us in a discussion: Zend vs Cake? Anyone have any useful input here? Also, any other tips for embarking on this project would be appreciated. (Except for suggestions for existing CMSes, we know they're out there.) EDIT: It seems I was a bit unclear. None of us are NEW to PHP - in fact, we all have fairly extensive experience from previous projects, including the current solution our community's website runs on which we built ourselves. The decision to not use an existing CMS is a very informed one, so although I appreciate all the good suggestions we really are going to do this ourselves. So. Zend vs Cake?

• Creating a content management system for dedicated use

  I've been trying to create a specialised CMS, as none of the current open-source ones fit my needs for this project. I did my research on Google, tried multiple times but haven't got very far with this project. I'm trying to create a CMS for a TV/episode guide which is similar to this: (for some that don't have the :// just copy-and-paste and add it after http in the URL) http library.digiguide.com/lib/programmenextshowing/Police%2C+Camera%2C+Action!-12578 (one such example) - where records expire and delete from the database after expiration. I'm not sure how to go about this successfully, anyone got any advice? (Note:Although the linked site runs in ASP.NET, it's the design and feel of it I'm trying to emulate, except in PHP. I've managed to emulate that site's design, but with my own tweaks to it.)

• gevent install on x86_64 fails: "undefined symbol: evhttp_accept_socket"

  I'm trying to install gevent on a fresh EC2 CentOS 5.3 64-bit system. • Advantages/disadvantages of Python and Ruby

  I know this is going to seem a little like all the other python vs ruby question out there, but I'm not looking specifically to pick one over the other all the time. My question is, essentially, why would you use one language over the other when you are starting a new project? What features does ruby have that python doesn't that would make you decide on it for a given project? What about python over ruby? I was just recently thinking about the differentiation between the two languages because of Jamis Buck's "There is no magic, only awesome" series of articles (4 parts, available here) when I realized I really don't know enough about the two languages to know when to choose one over the other. I'm hoping to get objective answers from people who have experience with both languages, rather than just "python is better, ruby sucks" kind of responses. If you know of a feature in one language that doesn't exist in the other and is great in a certain situation, feel free to chime in and say why you think it's awesome. If you have another language comparable to these that you'd like to suggest pros/cons for, like groovy for example, that would be appreciated too.   For a new project I am thinking about whether to use OpenGL or Unity3d. I have a bit of experience with OpenGL, but I am completely new to Unity. I already read through the Unity documentation and tutorials on the Unity Website. However, I could not find a way to draw a simple Line-Strip with Unity. In the following example (C#, OpenGL/SharpGL) I draw a round trajectory from a predifined point to an obstacle, which can be imagined as a divided circle with midpoint [cx,cy] and radius r. The position (x-y coordinates) of the obstacle is given by obst_x and obst_y. Question 1: How could I do the same with Unity? Question 2: In my new project, I will have to draw quite a lot of such geometric primitives. • Shared classes are build under VS2008 only but not under MSBuild.

  We share our classes between silverlight 3.0 client and server as is it described here. Everything works fine under Visual Studio 2008 only. Using msbuild with following command line parameters: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\msbuild.exe FoobarApplication.sln /t:Rebuild /p:Configuration=Release /p:Platform="Any CPU" we get following error: Class1.cs(28,54): error CS0234: The type or namespace name 'WcfService' does not exist in the namespace 'Company.FoobarApplication' (are you missing an assembly reference?) Service References\geoServiceReference1\Reference.cs(24,81): error CS0234: The type or namespace name 'WcfService' does not exist in the namespace 'Company.FoobarApplication' (are you missing an assembly reference?) Done Building Project "C:\work\bov-tmp\FoobarApplication\SilverlightClassLibrary3\SilverlightClassLibrary3.csproj" (Rebuild target(s)) -- FAILED. Done Building Project "C:\work\bov-tmp\FoobarApplication\FoobarApplication.sln" (Rebuild target(s)) -- FAILED. I found exactly the same question here. There are 4 workarounds there, I tried first 3 of them and those did not worked out. The 4-th workaround is not the acceptable solution. Any thoughts how to build the solution?

• Does somebody know something about Flash-CS5' "multiple copies" bug?

  I'm, generally, complaining, not asking, but if somebody will be able (Adobe isn't) to help - it will be perfect. I use Flash-CS5 IDE to compose .swc files to import it, then, into FlashDevelop. Evetyrhing works fine until SOMETIMES. About each 10th "Ctrl+S" (save) click Flash-CS5 duplicates ALL images (loaded .bmp, .jpg, .png... files) and names them like "Copy ..." where "..." is incrementing number. Furhtermore, Flash-CS5 creates duplications of some layers - other layers have duplications of items which put on them. Restoring project's state to previous (not copied) state - is the hell. This bug is not reproducible but it happens each 2 hours or so - both right after project's opening and after several hours of work. It happens on different machines - I know at least 5 people which told me that they also run into this issue and do not know how to escape it. Did somebody experienced it? Does somebody know how to handle it?

• Xcode - duplicate Target - new Target fails to build

  Hi all, using Xcode 3.2.5 on 10.6.6 (10J521) I have an Xcode project containing 1 Target: "MyApp". It builds and runs successfully. As well as source and resource files, the Target contains a "Copy Files" build phase which copies "Sparkle.framework" in. The framework is in the same directory as the project. I want to duplicate this Target. Steps taken: Did "Clean all Targets". Right-clicked on the "MyApp" Target within Xcode, and then chose "Duplicate". Renamed the duplicated target to "MyAppTarget2". Selected "MyAppTarget2" as the Active Target from the popup menu in the top-left. Did "Build". The problem: error: Sparkle/Sparkle.h: No such file or directory This is puzzling! Each Build step appears to have been replicated in the duplicated Target, including the "Copy Files" phase. The Sparkle.framework exists at the path indicated by [Get Info on the Copy Phase item]. If I right-click on the Sparkle.framework file within the "Copy Files" build phase of the duplicated Target, and select "Reveal in Finder", then the correct Sparkle.framework file is shown. The required file exists at Sparkle.framework/Headers/Sparkle.h If I switch back to the original "MyApp" target, it builds and runs successfully. Am I doing something obviously wrong here? Thanks.

• iPhone OS: Strategies for high density image work

  I have a project that is coming around the bend this summer that is going to involve, potentially, an extremely high volume of image data for display. We are talking hundreds of 640x480-ish images in a given application session (scaled to a smaller resolution when displayed), and handfuls of very large (1280x1024 or higher) images at a time. I've already done some preliminary work and I've found that the typical 640x480ish image is just a shade under 1MB in memory when placed into a UIImageView and displayed... but the very large images can be a whopping 5+ MB's in some cases. This project is actually be targeted at the iPad, which, in my Instruments tests seems to cap out at about 80-100MB's of addressable physical memory. Details aside, I need to start thinking of how to move huge volumes of image data between virtual and physical memory while preserving the fluidity and responsiveness of the application, which will be high visibility. I'm probably on the higher ends of intermediate at Objective-C... so I am looking for some solid articles and advice on the following: 1) Responsible management of UIImage and UIImageView in the name of conserving physical RAM 2) Merits of using CGImage over UIImage, particularly for the huge images, and if there will be any performance gain 3) Anything dealing with memory paging particularly as it pertains to images I will epilogue by saying that the numbers I have above maybe off by about 10 or 15%. Images may or may not end up being bundled into the actual app itself as opposed to being loaded in from an external server.

• Where to put a textfile I want to use in eclipse?

  hi there, I need to read a text file when I start my program. I'm using eclipse and started a new java project. In my project folder I got the "src" folder and the standard "JRE System Library"... I just don't know where to put the text file. I cannot use a "hard coded" path because the text file needs to be included with my app... I also tried to create a new folder like "Files" and use the pathe "Files/staedteliste.txt".. doesn't work too...   Hi there, Does anybody know how to (easily) "rename" an existing grails application? I'm running into this because my PaaS provider does not allow me to delete a subscription... So I want to deploy my application under a different name. Of course, I can do this manually, but I think it might be a useful 'top-level' script (i.e. "grails rename-app newappname") Manual hints: When I do a "grails create-app myappname" I can see the myappname exists in the following files (and filenames)... Of course this is done by the create-app script, which replaces @...@ tokens in the template. • Writing fortran robust and "modern" code

  In some scientific environments, you often cannot go without FORTRAN as most of the developers only know that idiom, and there is lot of legacy code and related experience. And frankly, there are not many other cross-platform options for high performance programming ( C++ would do the task, but the syntax, zero-starting arrays, and pointers are too much for most engineers ;-) ). I'm a C++ guy but I'm stuck with some F90 projects. So, let's assume a new project must use FORTRAN (F90), but I want to build the most modern software architecture out of it. while being compatible with most "recent" compilers (intel ifort, but also including sun/HP/IBM own compilers) So I'm thinking of imposing: global variable forbidden, no gotos, no jump labels, "implicit none", etc. "object-oriented programming" (modules with datatypes + related subroutines) modular/reusable functions, well documented, reusable libraries assertions/preconditions/invariants (implemented using preprocessor statements) unit tests for all (most) subroutines and "objects" an intense "debug mode" (#ifdef DEBUG) with more checks and all possible Intel compiler checks possible (array bounds, subroutine interfaces, etc.) uniform and enforced legible coding style, using code processing tools C stubs/wrappers for libpthread, libDL (and eventually GPU kernels, etc.) C/C++ implementation of utility functions (strings, file operations, sockets, memory alloc/dealloc reference counting for debug mode, etc.) ( This may all seem "evident" modern programming assumptions, but in a legacy fortran world, most of these are big changes in the typical programmer workflow ) The goal with all that is to have trustworthy, maintainable and modular code. Whereas, in typical fortran, modularity is often not a primary goal, and code is trustworthy only if the original developer was very clever, and the code was not changed since then ! (i'm a bit joking here, but not much) I searched around for references about object-oriented fortran, programming-by-contract (assertions/preconditions/etc.), and found only ugly and outdated documents, syntaxes and papers done by people with no large-scale project involvement, and dead projects. Any good URL, advice, reference paper/books on the subject?

  I have a functioning jquery accordion using pure unordered lists. I'm trying to incorporate 2 pieces of functionality. • How can I do such a typical unittest?

  This is a simple structure in my project: MyAPP--- note--- __init__.py views.py urls.py test.py models.py auth-- ... template--- auth--- login.html register.html note--- noteshow.html media--- css--- ... js--- ... settings.py urls.py __init__.py manage.py I want to make a unittest which can test the noteshow page working propeyly or not. The code: from django.test import TestCase class Note(TestCase): def test_noteshow(self): response = self.client.get('/note/') self.assertEqual(response.status_code, 200) self.assertTemplateUsed(response, '/note/noteshow.html') The problem is that my project include an auth mod, it will force the unlogin user redirecting into the login.html page when they visit the noteshow.html. So, when I run my unittest, in the bash it raise an failure that the response.status_code is always 302 instead of 200. All right though through this result I can check the auth mod is running well, it is not like what I want it to be. • Correct Interactive Website System Design Concepts / Methods?

  Hi all, I hope this question isn't too open ended, but a nudge in the right direction is all I need! I am currently building an online accounting system - the idea is that users can register, log in, and then create customers, generate invoices and other documents and eventually print / email those documents out. I am a Java programmer but unfortunately haven't had too much experience in web projects and their design concepts... This is what I have got thus far - A Tomcat web server which loads Spring. Spring handles my DAO's and required classes for the business logic. Tomcat serves JSP's containing the pages which make up the website. To make it interactive I have used JavaScript in the pages (jQuery and its AJAX calls) to send and receive JSON data (this is done by posting to a page which calls a handleAction() method in one of my classes). My question is, am I tackling this project in the right way? Am I using the right tools and methods? I understand there are literally countless ways of tackling any project but I would really love to get feedback with regards to tried and tested methods, general practices etc. Thanks in advance! • Using MSBuild 4 command line to publish ASP.NET web application

  In previous msbuild we used the target '_CopyWebApplication' in order to build and convert the source of a project into a published site, this worked OK, but wasn't ideal. In .NET 4, the publishing process is somewhat more sophisticated and additionally seems a bit of a black box to understand. Whilst packages look great, I cannot fully understand how they can be harnessed by a build server, the build server would not get any manifest information, and equally, something (msbuild?) is CREATING this manifest information FROM the project file. In our build server, I ideally want to say, here is my csproj file, deploy it by the package configuration 'x'. I'm trying to understand the workflow I need to make this happen. Right now when I use _CopyWebApplication, the result is different to doing a publish from visual studio 2010, primarily that web.config transforms aren't processed, and obviously msdeploy isn't involved at all. Can somebody point me in the right direction, I believe I need to get msbuild to do the equiv of 'Build Deployment Package', and then use msdeploy to deploy this from our build server to our CI testing environments. I know this is a very vague post, but I hope somebody can give me some hints, I'll be continuing research also, so if I make any progress, I'll post my findings here. Thanks in advance, Stephen.

• Something preventing default (explorer-style) CListCtrl jump to line behaviour

  I'm maintaining an MFC/COM/ATL 45-odd project solution originally written with VS6. I'm now using VS2008. I'm looking at a list control(vanilla CListCtrl) which doesn't behave as we think it should. Normally in an MFC list control you can press a key, (Q say) & selection will jump down to the 1st line beginning with 'Q' (like windows explorer). Does anyone have an idea as to why this might not happen? The styles/Extended styles are set the same as another control in the same project, which DOES work OK. Do I have to send my own message, or is there a flag, etc. that controls that functionality or what? Normally Google would supply the answer, but I haven't been able to frame my query correctly to come up with the relevant info this time. Here's the line from the .rc file for the CListCtrl that doesn't jump to a line on keypress: CONTROL "List1",IDC_BAL_LIST,"SysListView32",LVS_REPORT | LVS_SHOWSELALWAYS | WS_BORDER | WS_TABSTOP,0,73,493,230 And here's a line from the same .rc file showing a list control that does do that: CONTROL "List1",IDC_LIST1,"SysListView32",LVS_REPORT | LVS_SHOWSELALWAYS | WS_BORDER | WS_TABSTOP,1,38,501,219 As you can see, there's no obvious difference to the properties, so what program code would affect it?
