• Apache server completely freezes until it gets restarted

  My server does this every few days. What sucks is that it always seems to do this right after I go to bed, so when I wake up, I'm greeted with the fact that my server has been down for the past 6 or 7 hours. When I first noticed this, I added a cronjob that tries to restart the server every 15 minutes, but I guess that didn't fix it. Once I noticed the server was down, I can this command: /etc/init.d/apache2 restart * Restarting web server apache2 apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName ... waiting ...........................................................apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName httpd (pid 17597) already running ...which is odd, because a restart should restart the server, even if it's already running, correct? I eventually had to "stop" then "start" to get it working again. I then looked through the logs, and found something very weird. It seems that around the time the server crashed, the logs have entries that are wildly out of order. I'm running apache with the worker mpm, here are the settings for that: <IfModule mpm_worker_module> StartServers 1 MaxClients 100 MinSpareThreads 5 MaxSpareThreads 10 ThreadsPerChild 10 MaxRequestsPerChild 3000 </IfModule> This apache server is running a bunch of stuff, but most of the traffic comes from a django project I'm hosting, that uses mod_wsgi. There also is a simple machines forum that is running off of mod_fcgid. Those setting are below: <IfModule mod_fcgid.c> MaxRequestsPerProcess 500 MaxProcessCount 3 AddHandler fcgid-script .php .fcgi AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl FCGIWrapper "/usr/bin/php-cgi" .php </IfModule> Anyone know of anything else I can check? I've just about tweaked every single setting I can think of, yet these freezes still happen.

• Need advice for approach for a web-based app that loads excel worksheet but exposes only the charts

  I'm looking for suggestions on the Visual Studio approach to take for a web application that is in the conceptual stage. My environment has a lot of tools: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64bit Visual Studio 2010 Professional Edition Sharepoint 2010 Server Enterprise Edition SQL Server 2008 R2 Office 2010 Professional I know I will need this app to retrieve data from a database (or a web service - not sure exactly at this point). The data needs to be placed in an Excel workbook dynamically. The app will need to have a nice user interface (standard web controls - perhaps with some Javascript effects). The Excel ribbon and worksheet grid will need to be hidden. Some web control(s) will cause the Excel chart(s) to be rendered. I am thinking this sounds like Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) so as to leverage .Net and hide Excel. Can you offer suggestions regarding: One ASP.Net Web App Project One Class Library Project for Excel or perhaps which one of the several different Excel 2010 project types (addin, template, document) Would Excel Services for Sharepoint be useful (or required) ? I am feeling a little overwhelmed with so many choices at this early stage of conceptualizing the app. Can you suggest some ideas for this sort of thing? Also, I am a bit more experienced with C# but I've read VB.Net is better for work with the Excel object model. What are general advises with regard to tool choice and overall approach tradeoffs?

• How to force a clock update using ntp?

  I am running Ubuntu on an ARM based embedded system that lacks a battery backed RTC. The wake-up time is somewhere during 1970. Thus, I use the NTP service to update the time to the current time. I added the following line to /etc/rc.local file: sudo ntpdate -s time.nist.gov However, after startup, it still takes a couple of minutes until the time is updated, during which period I cannot work effectively with tar and make. How can I force a clock update at any given time? UPDATE 1: The following (thanks to Eric and Stephan) works fine from command line, but fails to update the clock when put in /etc/rc.local: $ date ; sudo service ntp stop ; sudo ntpdate -s time.nist.gov ; sudo service ntp start ; date Thu Jan 1 00:00:58 UTC 1970 * Stopping NTP server ntpd [ OK ] * Starting NTP server [ OK ] Thu Feb 14 18:52:21 UTC 2013 What am I doing wrong? UPDATE 2: I tried following the few suggestions that came in response to the 1st update, but nothing seems to actually do the job as required. Here's what I tried: Replace the server to us.pool.ntp.org Use explicit paths to the programs Remove the ntp service altogether and leave just sudo ntpdate ... in rc.local Remove the sudo from the above command in rc.local Using the above, the machine still starts at 1970. However, when doing this from command line once logged in (via ssh), the clock gets updated as soon as I invoke ntpdate. Last thing I did was to remove that from rc.local and place a call to ntpdate in my .bashrc file. This does update the clock as expected, and I get the true current time once the command prompt is available. However, this means that if the machine is turned on and no user is logged in, then the time never gets updates. I can, of course, reinstall the ntp service so at least the clock is updated within a few minutes from startup, but then we're back at square 1. So, is there a reason why placing the ntpdate command in rc.local does not perform the required task, while doing so in .bashrc works fine?

• Samba with Active Directory - shares are readonly, NT_STATUS_MEDIA_WRITE_PROTECTED

  I've set a samba server that seems to work, all shares are seemingly exported as readonly, however. The machine is called "lx". • What would happen if I did a "Boot to VHD" to a VHD that was configured to run under Hyper-V?

  Microsoft has a Hyper-V based VM I'm interested in running, however, I don't have access to a Windows Server 2008 machine to try it on, only a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine (Windows 7 does not support Hyper-V). This is the VM in question: This download contains three Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V Virtual Machine set for evaluating and demonstrating Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 and Project Server 2010. 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine (SP1) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27417 I came across a somewhat relevant article from Scott Hanselman: Less Virtual, More Machine - Windows 7 and the magic of Boot to VHD: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/LessVirtualMoreMachineWindows7AndTheMagicOfBootToVHD.aspx I realize other options are to convert this VM to a VMWare compatible VM or some of the options to run it under VirtualBox. But instead of those routes, I'm wondering: What would happen if I tried to go the "Boot to VHD" route using this Hyper-V VHD? Is it possible that during the boot process, Windows would simply notice that hardware had changed and adjust accordingly, installing the appropriate drivers and continuing on without a hitch?

• how can i move ext3 partition to the beginning of drive without losing data?

  I have a 500GB external drive. It had two partitions, each around 250GB. I removed the first partition. I'd like to move the 2nd to the left, so it consumes 100% of the drive. • SharePoint: UI for ordering list items

  SharePoint list items have in the the base Item template a field named Order. This field is not shown by default. SharePoint 2007, 2010 and 2013 have a possibility to specify the order in a UI, using the _layouts page: {SiteUrl}/_layouts/Reorder.aspx?List={ListId} In SharePoint 2010 and 2013 it is possible to add a custom action to a list. On the list screen in the bottom right corner you can find the custom action: We now need to modify the view to include the order by adding the Order field to the view, and sorting on the Order field. Problem is that the Order field is hidden. It is possible to modify the schema of the Order field to set the Hidden attribute to FALSE. • Help looking before I leap! I need expert guidance...

  27" iMac running win7 under bootcamp (slick! ). I have Access 2003 program with files linked through ODBC used by 4 installations (all with Access 2003 installed). I want to buy Access 2010 and try it under virtual PC (under Bootcamp). Will it work (since I have to install the ODBC drivers)? If I decide after this trial that I like what it does, can I then install it under the Windows 7 bootcamp partition (with or without uninstalling the virtual PC) without using up the 2nd allowed installation? Also, I see that MS allows an Office Pro 2010 trial download good for 60 days. Would this work in Windows 7 Virtual PC and would it be a better way to go, followed by a legitimate purchase of Access 2010 for the Windows 7? This is not an Access programming question--I realize there may be some tweaks necessary in the program to run it under 2010 and I can handle that part.

• Blog Rebranding

  I have been spending more and more time on learning as much as I can on Agile Development and also have been fairly immersed in rolling out TFS 2010 in our environment.  I feel like it is time to talk about some of my experiences.  With that, I am rebranding my blog to focus on these topics.  I am going to start with a bunch of blogs on the process I have gone through getting TFS 2010 configured for our development teams.   I am trying to use SQL Server Management Studio 2008's Activity Monitor with an SQL Server 2000 instance to diagnose some query performance issues. I can connect SMSS 2008 to the db fine, and use it to browse objects and run queries. But when I press the Activity Monitor button, it pops up an error message saying: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio This operation does not support connections to Microsoft SQL Server Personal Edition version 8.00.818. This MSDN article implies that Activity Monitor works with SQL Server 2000. Is it the fact that it's Personal Edition that's preventing it from working? The error message isn't clear whether it's the edition or version that's the problem.

• Saving more corsor positions (with tput?) in bash terminal

  I know that tput sc saves the current cursor position and tput rc restores it exactly where tput sc was called. The problem is that every time tput sc is called, it overwrites the previous saved position. Is there a way to save more positions, e.g. tput sc pos1 and tput sc pos2 which can be restored with, say, tput rc pos1 and tput rc pos2 respectively? (The solution need not make use of tput, I mentioned it because it's the only command I know that handles cursor position) If not, is there a way to at least save the cursor position locally in a function, so that if a function uses tput sc and then calls another function that runs again tput sc, then each function restores its own saved cursor position when invoking tput rc? • Default Program With Multiple Versions Installed

  I have multiple versions of Excel installed. Excel 2010, 2007 and 2003. I have them installed on one hard drive with Windows 7 Ultimate as the OS. When I double-click on an XLS file, Excel 2007 opens. I would like Excel 2010 to open. I read and followed the instructions to go to the Control Panel at "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs" and set the default programs. I changed the default to the physical EXE for Excel 2010 at the proper folder that it is installed. When I double-click on the XLS files, Excel 2007 still opens. So I tried to change it to Excel 2003 just to see if it changed to that and it still opens Excel 2007. What am I missing? I would really like the file extension to open Excel 2010, but can not seem to do that.

• Ruby Rails Mongrel Sever failing to serve OXS1.6

  Hi there I'm fairly new to Rails and the Mac, and doing my first deploy... I'm trying to set up my rails app on a brand new Apple mini-server running OXS1.6 (Snow Leopard). It is currently running fine on my new iMac i7 (same OS). I start mongrel with this command: mongrel_rails start -e production -p 3000 -d -a 127.0.0.1 --debug And it starts giving this output in the log/mongrel.log ** Daemonized, any open files are closed. Look at log/mongrel.pid and log/mongrel.log for info. ** Starting Mongrel listening at 127.0.0.1:3000 ** Installing debugging prefixed filters. I'm pretty good at figuring things out if I have some log file messages to direct me, but mongrel.log has no error message (the output remains the same as above), and the log/production.log is empty (which makes me think rails has not started?). My gems are all the same versions between machines and so is the app code; and there are no clues I can see in any of the mongrel_debug logs, except that rails.log on the mac mini-server and the iMac are different.
