• Getting BootMgr not found errors repeatedly on Win7 x64

  So here is the basic configuration of the box: Primary RAID 1 (Mirror, Bootable): 2x 300GB WD SATA drives AMD Phenom Quad Core x64 @2.2 ASUS M3N78 Pro Board 4GB RAM Win 7 Ultimate Additionally, this box is a Host OS for several CentOS Boxes via VirtualBox. The box runs like a champ but, for whatever reason, everytime I restart the machine I get a BootMgr not found error when the box tries to boot. I pop in my Win DVD, select 'Repair Windows' then 'Fix Start Up Problems' and everything works fine...once. When I restart the box again I have to go back through this process. Any ideas on what is going on?

• Can't add NetworkManager applet to gnome panel

  I have researched this problem extensively and I can't seem to find an answer. In Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I want to connect to my VPN through the NetworkManager applet. I installed all the network manager packages, including the gnome client. I understand I need to add the "Notification Area" to the panel, which I have done. I checked that the NetworkManager is running: nate@nate-desktop:~$ service network-manager status network-manager start/running, process 763 In /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, I have added managed=true (don't know if this matters, but I saw it suggested on one forum): nate@nate-desktop:~$ more /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf # This file is installed into /etc/NetworkManager, and is loaded by # NetworkManager by default. To override, specify: '--config file' # during NM startup. This can be done by appending to DAEMON_OPTS in # the file: # # /etc/default/NetworkManager # [main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile [ifupdown] #managed=false managed=true I restarted NetworkManager and tried rebooting, too. At this point, it looks like NetworkManager is running but it's not appearing in the NotificationArea of the panel. I don't know what else to try. Any ideas?

• Ubuntu 9.10 x86_32 with PAE causes graphics issues, mainly slowness

  I've tried the 64bit version and found I was constantly hitting a brick wall trying to get 32bit stuff to run; I'd previously used PAE on 9.04 without any issues so figured I'd give it a shot. However, on 9.10 it seems PAE or the process of enabling PAE breaks the nvidia drivers/module somewhat as performance is terrible; I can't even enable desktop effects and there's lots of artifacting on random controls. Disabling the pae image and rebooting fixes the issue however I'm then stuck with "only" 2.7Gb of ram and unable to use the full 8gb that's installed. Is there somthing special I need to do when using pae and nVidia drivers or should I be using 64bit and just figure out how to force run 32bit packages? :-p

• Scheduled Deprecation of Legacy Obligation Features

  The Obligation object in ETPM includes some functionality and tables that, to our knowledge, are not being used by customers and implementers are this time.  Removing this logic and the related tables should benefit the performance of and simplify logic executed during Obligation maintenance processing. The Release Notes included with ETPM v2.3.1 announced that the product plans to deprecate the functionality on Obligation for Contract Terms, Contract Quantities, Tax Exemptions, Terms & Conditions and Obligation Type Start Options.  Our plan is to remove this functionality in the next release of ETPM. We have already confirmed with most project teams that these features are not being used so the deprecation should have no impact on existing designs or process. If you think your project may be impacted by this deprecation, please review any Business Object that has been created for the Obligation maintenance object to make sure that no elements are being defined for any of the following child tables: -          CI_SA_CONTERM -          CI_SA_CONT_QTY -          CI_TOU_CONT_VAL -          CI_SA_TC   As part of this deprecation, the following administrative tables are being removed along with their related metadata: -          Contract Quantity Type -          Tax Exempt Type -          Terms and Conditions Please contact myself or the Oracle Tax Product Management team if your implementation has actually used these objects in their designs. • .wine-pipelight folder not present

  Following the instructions on the pipelight installation page, I installed pipelight on Ubuntu 14.04. However, upon opening firefox the .wine-pipelight folder isn't present in my home folder, and I get the following errors: [PIPELIGHT:LIN:unknown] attached to process. • Math questions at a programmer interview?

  So I went to an interview at Samsung here in Dallas, Texas. The way the recruiter described the job, he didn't make it sound like it was too math-oriented. The job basically involved graphics programming and C++. Yes, math is implied in graphics programming, especially shaders, but I still wasn't expecting this... The whole interview lasted about an hour and a half and they asked me nothing but math-related questions. They didn't ask me a single programming question, which I found odd. About all they did was ask me how to write certain math routines as a C++ function, but that's about it. What about programming philosophy questions? Design patterns? Code-correctness? Constness? Exception safety? Thread safety? There are a zillion topics that they could have covered. But they didn't. The main concern I have is that they didn't ask any programming questions. This basically implies to me that any programmer who is good at math can get a job here, but they might put out terrible code. Of course, I think I bombed the interview because I haven't used any sort of linear algebra in about a year and I forget math easily if I haven't used it in practice for a while. Are any of my other fellow programmers out there this way? I'm a game programmer too, so this seems especially odd. The more I learn, the more old knowledge that gets "popped" out of my "stack" (memory). My question is: Does this interview seem suspicious? Is this a typical interview that large corporations have? During the interview they told me that Google's interview process is similar. They have multiple, consecutive interviews where the math problems get more advanced.

• Tool to maintain/keep track of filesystem content integrity?

  I'm looking for a tool to maintain the integrity of a filesystem and it's contents using checksums. Effectively storing a list of checksums/filename pairs somewhere on the filesystem in a way that can be verified later if files are somehow damaged or lost. Git does what I want, but because it stores the contents of every file in it's object database, the disk usage will at least double. And the fact that it does not provide a progress bar when scanning files tells me it was not designed for the multi-terabyte filesystem I have in mind. I can do this crudely by storing the output of md5deep, but is there a tool specifically designed for this purpose, using whatever smarts possible to make the process efficient?

• Would it be smarter to setup a Linux development server at home, or to use a hosted server?

  I am in the process of learning as much as I can about LAMP. I was wondering if I should set a web server on my home network, or use a service like Rackspace (cloud space)? I need to have root access, to be able to access it remotely via SSH/FTP/HTTP, and to be able to install things like subversion, etc. I currently have Comcast so I have plenty of bandwidth, but I am not sure if this would violate the TOS, and/or compromise the security of my home network. Pricing for these cloud hosts, seems reasonable ($11 per month plus about $0.10 per GB of bandwidth), but I am not sure if I will have to control I am looking for.

• My sound stopped working today, how can I fix it?

  This seems to be a problem with pulseaudio. I was logged in over VNC on my phone and started playing a video this caused X to crash (as sometimes happens). I restarted and suddenly the sound doesn't work. I have a Intel HDA/Realtek ALC889 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller alsamixer is detecting this just fine. PulseAudio doesn't detect this alsa device so is using auto_null as the default sink (logs below). When I properly kill PulseAudio (tell it not to auto-start) direct ALSA communication with the sound card works just fine. speaker-test, for example, works. So the hardware and ALSA layers are fine IMO. In the logs, it seems that the card might be "busy" but I really don't know how or why it would be now (and never before). Is there an ALSA lock file somewhere that it still there because of my crash? I just ran sudo fuser /dev/snd/* and saw this: oli@bert:~$ sudo fuser /dev/snd/* /dev/snd/controlC0: 1884 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: 1884m /dev/snd/timer: 1884 A look at the process list (ps aux | grep 1884) tells me process 1884 is arecord -c 1 -f S16_LE -r 8000 -t raw. No idea what this is or why it's running. When I try and kill arecord (as root), it just respawns and rebinds on the hardware. I'm in a very annoying situation where I don't know what is going on and don't know how to find out. I'm open to all suggestions to get this working again. Fire away. • General video performance affected on Mac OSX 10.5 (PowerBook G4)

  Hi all, I'm quite new to Mac and I just got a PowerBook G4 for free. I installed OSX 10.5 on it and for the first two weeks, everything was going kinda smooth even if this is similar to a P3. I'm not expecting awsome video performance but at least be able to watch some videos from Youtube. Yesterday night, I installed Office 2008 for mac and this morning, even after a reboot, my computer is way much slower that I used to know. I watched a youtube video and the framerate was 1:1. I also noticed it on flash adds, it's way slower! Is there anything that I can do to increase video performance, see what's the process list running and taking more GPU or CPU, what's taking more ram and stuff like that?! What do you guys, Mac pros, would do on an old laptop with OSX 10.5 Thanks!

• Lan, vpn on Amazon EC2, how to?

  The problem is as follows: I have 2 windows2003 server instances running on the cloud. 1) How can I create a local area network from these 2 instances? 2) Assuming that I want to create a VPN network from these 2 instances, how do I do that? (I'm not very good in networking, therefor the above problem description might be incomplete or not very clear.) A detailed answer or clarification would be praised and appreciated! What I tried: 1) Setting up OpenVPN, but I got lost in the process. 2) Creating a VPN from windows2003 server in the following manner: on instance a): set up a dhcp server; set up an "accept income vpn" connection; with the followin tcp ip settings: obtain an ip from the dhcp server; on instance b): created a new vpn connection, tried to connect to intance A, using the instance A static IP but error 806 was thrown, something relate to a GRE protocol.

• Rough estimate for speed advantage of SAN-via-fibre to san-via-iSCSI when using VMware vSphere

  We are in the process of setting up two virtualization servers (DELL R710, Dual Quadcore Xeon CPUs at 2.3 Ghz, 48 GB RAM) for VMware VSphere with storage on a SAN (DELL Powervault MD3000i, 10x 500 GB SAS drives, RAID 5) which will be attached via iSCSI on a Gbit Ethernet Switch (DELL Powerconnect 5424, they call it "iSCSI-optimized"). Can anyone give an estimate how much faster a fiber channel based solution would be (or better "feel")? I don't mean the nominal speed advantage, I mean how much faster will virtual machines effectively work? Are we talking twice the speed, five times, 10 times faster? Does it justify the price? PS: We are not talking about heavily used database servers or exchange servers. Most of the virtualized servers run below 3-5% average CPU load.

  Alt-Tab looses focus and have to hit Alt-Grave Accent to get focus I have ubuntu 12.4 with Unity window manager. I have a gvim window and a firefox window open. I hit Alt-Tab to switch between the two. Sometimes the gvim window doesn't have focus and I have to hit Alt-GraveAccent (Alt-`) to get the gvim window to have focus (ie: have the cursor a solid white square instead of a outline of a square) I do this to move between firefox where I highlight some text and do a copy, then Alt-Tab to gvim and do a paste. Sometimes the focus isn't in gvim and the paste doesn't work. I then have to do an Alt-graveAccent to get the focus into gvim or click the gvim window. These extra steps slow my process down and it makes it difficult to get into a smooth rythum. I saw this: ALT+TAB loses focus Maybe the Alt-GraveAccent may help someone. It's a unity bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1035628 Your best bet is to wait until an update comes through fixing it.

• What is the difference between Row Level Security and RPD security?

  Row level security (RLS) is a feature of Oracle Enterprise Edition database. RLS enforces security policies on the database level. This means any query executed against the database will respect the specific security applied through these policies. For P6 Reporting Database, these policies are applied during the ETL process. This gives database users the ability to access data with security enforcement even outside of the Oracle Business Intelligence application. RLS is a new feature of P6 Reporting Database starting in version 3.0. This allows for maximum security enforcement outside of the ETL and inside of Oracle Business Intelligence (Analysis and Dashboards). Policies are defined against the STAR tables based on Primavera Project and Resource security. RLS is the security method of Oracle Enterprise Edition customers. See previous blogs and P6 Reporting Database Installation and Configuration guide for more on security specifics. To allow the use of Oracle Standard Edition database for those with a small database (as defined in the P6 Reporting Database Sizing and Planning guide) an RPD with non-RLS is also available. RPD security is enforced by adding specific criteria to the physical and business layers of the RPD for those tables that contain projects and resources, and those fields that are cost fields vs. non cost fields. With the RPD security method Oracle Business Intelligence enforces security. RLS security is the default security method. Additional steps are required at installation and ETL run time for those Oracle Standard Edition customers who use RPD security. The RPD method of security enforcement existed from P6 Reporting Database 2.0/P6 Analytics 1.0 up until RLS became available in P6 Reporting Database 3.0\P6 Analytics 2.0.
