• Can KVM CPU assignment count differ from physical hosts CPU count?

  I have read this question. I knew already that I could for example, have a quad core machine with four guests each having two vCPUs. As they don't all be require 100% CPU usage all the time, the scheduler would handle this for me. My question is about how this relates to a fail-over or migration situation; If host1 has two dual-core CPUs, and I assign guest1 four vCPUs (so it accessed all four physical cores), what will happen if I try and migrate it to host2 which only has one dual-core CPU? Can qemu-kvm emulate more vCPUs than there are physical? Or would I have to shut down the virtual machine, change the CPU assignment, migrate it, and then boot it back up (so no live migration)? • Password manager with checking for expired logins and passwords

  I, like most in here, use a password manager for keeping all kinds of login/pass informations inside. And over time, the heap of passwords started to grow, and grow, and now it's on about 350 (give or take) entries. The problem is, most of these have been temporary, for example, for login into forums which I wanted to visit, and never come back again; same with some pages and so on ... and because of that, every now and then I come onto a password that's long gone expired. So I was wondering, is there a utility out there that can check which of these has actually expired by logging in, and logging out ? I know this is a relatively complicated operation (auto filling doesn't always works and so on, how to log out ... etc.) , but still ... maybe someone knows.

• Is it possible to retrieve lost Windows XP profile information?

  I'm running Windows XP Professional on a PC which is less than a year old. About 3 months ago I got an error on boot saying windows could not find my profile. At this point it created a temp one. On this occasion I copied the temp data back into my existing profile and carried on using it. After another month it died again and, once again set me up a temp user. Each time this happens I lose everything related to my profile (desktop, start menu, etc). I ran checks on the hard disk and these suggested nothing was wrong so this seems a software issue not a disk problem. On the advice of my computer manufacturer I am now considering reinstalling Windows but just wanted to check if there's any other ideas for things I might be able to try. Any suggestions for what could be causing the problem would also be gladly appreciated.

• Chrome - SSL Security issue on Windows platforms?

  Fortify.net is a service that displays what's the currently encryption key used by your browser in a https connection. If I browse this site with Chrome 4.1.249.1042 in WinXp SP3 the key used is RC4 cipher, 128-bit key This encryption is weak, and it's the one used by old browsers like IE6. Chrome works fine on Fedora9 and it uses AES cipher, 256-bit key as more modern browsers do (i.e.Firefox) I consider this a security issue. I'm considering to switch back to Firefox in Windows. Do you know if it's possible to change the default encryption key in Chrome?

• How to hide a partition?

  I bought a small 32 GB SSD to store the operating system (Windows 7) and my applications. I'll copy the existing boot partition (30 GB) from my harddisk (WD Velociraptor) to the SSD using GParted but I'd like to keep the existing partition intact (keeping all data on it) so I can go back to it if there is a problem with the SSD. How can I hide the partition so it is not visible anymore to Windows? What should I change with GParted? Second question: how can I keep the harddisk partition synced with the SSD so I have a backup? I'm looking for a near real-time solution (not something like Acronis Drive Image).

• Desktop forgets theme?

  I am running Ubuntu in VirtualBox (on a Windows 7 host). Several times now, the top-level menu bar, the task bar — and seemingly every system dialog — have forgotten the out-of-the-box "Ambiance" theme they conform to when I first installed the system. Window captions still preserve the theme, but pretty much nothing else does. I have searched high and low on Google for assistance with this problem. Everything I've found suggests either running some gconf reset or deleting .gconf* .gnome* and other similar directories. I have followed all this advice and nothing works. I still get a boring Windows-95-style gray 3D look and feel. On previous occasions, after much messing around I've given up and rebooted the VM instance, and been pleasantly suprised to see the original "Ambience" theme restored throughout the UI, but invariably it disappears again some time later, usually after a reboot, so I can never figure out what I did that broke it. Here's a sample from Ubuntu's site of what I want it to look like. And here's a screenshot of my system as it currently looks. Also note that my GNOME Terminals normally have a nice purple semi-translucent look, and as can be seen from the screenshot, they are now just a solid matte white. This last time (just yesterday), trying numerous combinations all the usual tricks and rebooting several times hasn't fixed it, so here I am on SU wondering: How do I recover the out-of-the-box theme for my Gnome/Ubuntu desktop, noting that blowing away all config files — as suggested in many places online — fails to achieve this? It might help to know that it seems to fail either after I resize the VM instance, forcing the Ubuntu desktop to resize itself, or after I play around with Compiz settings. I haven't been able to figure out which of these it is, and it could be neither. Given the amount of pain I have had to go through to get things back to normal (and given that I am at a loss as to how to do so), it has proven difficult to definitively isolate the cause.

• how to fix asyncmac.sys infection

  AVG anti-virus tells me that there is a virus in my asyncmac.sys. I tried to overwrite it with a copy of asyncmac.sys from another computer (making sure that it was the same version of Windows XP, but I was still nervous that I was going to break something), but when I reboot, I get the same virus warning. If I try to delete the file Windows (or somebody) automatically and immediately puts it back. I get a blue-screen death if I try to boot in safe mode. I tried to do a system restore to before I had the virus, but it tells me that it can't restore because nothing has changed. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

• A Cautionary Tale About Multi-Source JNDI Configuration

  Here's a bit of fun with WebLogic JDBC configurations.  I ran into this issue after reading that p13nDataSource and cgDataSource-NonXA should not be configured as multi-source. There were some issues changing them to use the basic JDBC connection string and when rolling back to the bad configuration the server went "Boom".  Since one purpose behind this blog is to share lessons learned, I just had to post this. If you write your descriptors manually (as opposed to generating them using the WLS console) and put a comma-separated list of JNDI addresses like this: <jdbc-data-source-params> <jndi-name>weblogic.jdbc.jts.commercePool,contentDataSource, contentVersioningDataSource,portalFrameworkPool</jndi-name> <algorithm-type>Load-Balancing</algorithm-type> <data-source-list>portalDataSource-rac0,portalDataSource-rac1</data-source-list> <failover-request-if-busy>false</failover-request-if-busy> </jdbc-data-source-params> so long as the first address resolves, it will still work. Sort of.  If you call this connection to do an update, only one node of the RAC instance is updated. Other wonderful side-effects include the server refusing to start sometimes. The proper way to list the JNDI sources is one per node, like this: <jdbc-data-source-params> <jndi-name>weblogic.jdbc.jts.commercePool</jndi-name> <jndi-name>contentDataSource</jndi-name> <jndi-name>contentVersioningDataSource</jndi-name> <jndi-name>portalFrameworkPool</jndi-name> <algorithm-type>Load-Balancing</algorithm-type> <data-source-list>portalDataSource-rac0, portalDataSource-rac1, portalDataSource-rac2 </data-source-list> <failover-request-if-busy>false</failover-request-if-busy> </jdbc-data-source-params>(Props to Sandeep Seshan for locating the root cause)

• How to use mencoder to speed up video ?

  There's a webcam streaming WMV video that I can play/record with mplayer/mencoder (Debian Lenny including Debian-multimedia) just fine. I'd like to capture the video such that, when played back, it's faster (so say 100s of real time zooms past in every 1s of video). The "frameskip" filter seems like it ought to do this, but when I try e.g mencoder -o output.avi -ofps 25 -vf framestep=100 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:... <mms source URL> what I actually get is something which plays for the same length of time as it's allowed to capture for, but which only updates the displayed image every 4 seconds. Is there any way mencoder can be persuaded to do what I want ? (By the way, ideally I'd like to average the frames together to obtain motion-blur instead of just dropping/discarding most of them.).

• Can't set Windows XP background

  I have a Windows XP (Home) machine with a very weird problem. I cannot set the background image properly. That is, I can go to Desktop, Background image, select a different one, but the background has still the same solid colour. Now if I kill explorer.exe, I can see the background image correctly, but starting explorer.exe gives me the solid colour background back again. If I go to Desktop, Customise Desktop, Web, there is a checkbox at the bottom called "Fix desktop icons" or something like this (not sure how it's called in the English version.) If I enable this checkbox, I can see the background, but the desktop icons are drawn with solid-colour backgrounds (even though I have the "draw icon labels transparently" option set.) If I disable the checkbox, I have no desktop background. Active Desktop is disabled. Any idea how to fix this and what might be the reason for this behaviour in the first place?

• Process ANSI escape codes before piping

  I'm trying to pipe the output of a script (Mocha) to another script. However there is one problem: Mocha generates quite a few ansi escape characters to update the screen on the fly. These characters are also send through the pipe. Is there a way to process the ansi sequence such that the output is the same as the final output to the screen? I do want to keep color escape sequences, but not the curser movement escapes. Edit: I have a partial solution now (for Mocha only): so far it seems that Mocha with the spec output (the one I use) only generates color ecape characters and the CSI 0G escape sequence. The CSI 0G escape character means that the cursor should move back to the beginning of the line. Mocha uses this to overwrite a line completely. Therefore you could simply create a sed regexp which will delete everything up to that escape sequence on a line: sed 's/^.*\x1b\[0G//g'. I am still looking for the complete solution though.

• SQL Server 2008 lincensing question relating to web servers

  We purchased SQL Server 2008 Standard licences last year under the server + device CAL licencing model. Since our server has 2 physical CPUs and only 46 clients, this option was by far the cheapest. Now we'd like to be able to query a small number of stored procedures from our Windows Server 2003 Web Edition server, which is in a seperate zone on our firewall. I think SQL Server 2008 Web Edition could be an option to us, but is it possible to replicate/mirror stored procedures and tables to such a server and would we be breaking any rules by doing so? Is this a form of multiplexing? Also, would replication/mirroring work both ways, if we were to want to write back data from the web server?

But I wanted to test things first before I ruin my source files with one little typo. There comes the Visual Studio Search and Replace in Files dialog into the game. I can test my regular expression to do a multiline match with the Find button before actually breaking anything. And if something goes wrong I have the Undo button.   There is a nice blog post from Paulo Morgado online who deals with Multiline Regular expressions. The Visual Studio Regular expressions are non standard so you have to adapt your usual Regex know how to the other patterns. The pattern I cam finally up with is \#region File Header:b*(.*\n)@\#endregion The Regular expression can be read as \#region File Header Match “#region File Header” \# Escapes the # character since it is a quantifier. :b* After this none or more spaces or tabs can follow (:b stands for space or tab) (.*\n)@ Match anything across lines in a non greedy way (the @ character makes it non greedy) to prevent matching too much until the #endregion somewhere in our source file. \#endregion Match everything until “#endregion” is found I had always knew that Visual Studio can do it but I never bothered to learn the non standard Regex syntax. This is powerful and it is inside Visual Studio since 2005!

• How to Install PCRE Development Headers on Mac OSX

  I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and my local Ruby on Rails development environment isn't running straight off the bat, when I visit localhost I see It works! and remembered I needed to start Phusion Passenger, so when I run passenger start it checks all the requisites and fails when it gets to the PCRE Development Headers: * Checking for PCRE development headers... Found: no It tells me to go to http://www.pcre.org/ to download them so I downloaded 8.33 from here which went to my Downloads folder, so I unzipped it, cd'd to the folder and ran: ./configure make make install Then cd'd back to my rails app directory on my Desktop and re-ran passenger start but it's still the same. Tried a new Terminal window but that didn't make any difference. I must have done this before to get my dev environment working but can't seem to solve it this time. I also tried brew install pcre but it says Warning: pcre-8.33 already installed.

• Latitude E6410 - Screen flickering on Windows 8

  On Windows 8, my Latitude E6410 screen (1440x900 - 60Hz - NVidia NVS3100M) is flickering. If I turn off the laptop for 30 minutes and turn it back on, there's no flickering but it eventually start again after 10-15 minutes. The flickering seems more present at the top and bottom of the screen. I already updated the graphic card drivers, bios, etc. Nothing seems to fix the issue. To prove that it isn't a hardware issue, when I reinstalled Windows 7 I couldn't reproduce the issue. Any idea what could cause this?

• Meaning of offset in pygame Mask.overlap methods

  I have a situation in which two rectangles collide, and I have to detect how much did they collide so so I can redraw the objects in a way that they are only touching each others edges. It's a situation in which a moving ball should hit a completely unmovable wall and instantly stop moving. Since the ball sometimes moves multiple pixels per screen refresh, it it possible that it enters the wall with more that half its surface when the collision is detected, in which case i want to shift it position back to the point where it only touches the edges of the wall. Here is the conceptual image it: I decided to implement this with masks, and thought that i could supply the masks of both objects (wall and ball) and get the surface (as a square) of their intersection. However, there is also the offset parameter which i don't understand. • How can I convert the Nvidia driver installer into a deb?

  Every so often there's a beta version of the Nvidia driver that I want to try out. This has happened today: there's been a big performance issue with version 295.40 and I want to try the shiny new XRandR-enabled 302.07. I'm more than able to download the installer, remove all the repo-installed driver files and install the new version but it's frankly a pain in the bottom to turn that around and go back to the repo version. It also means I have to re-install the driver manually each time there's a Kernel upgrade. The other option we commonly give people is a PPA but in this case I'm being really impatient. It's going to be a few days before any PPA gets this but I need to try this today. I've already manually installed it on the media centre and I'm eyeing up my desktop now. So how do I take an installer (eg: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run) and convert that into a new nvidia-current/nvidia-current-updates package? Another way of asking this might be: How do people package the Nvidia drivers?

  Once again, I find myself back in Seoul – ASEM Tower, 16th Floor in a mobile room. I’m busy preparing for the interview process that is about to take place for Oracle Korea’s GIP 7th (Graduate Intake Program): scheduling the first round interviews, organizing interview guidelines, educating interviewers on the process and framework and  getting all the logistics ready for the 1st round interview. Seoul or Korea rather is a fascinating place. Highly efficient, the utmost respect for seniors and results orientated. When students come in for an interview at first it was hard to tell them apart – there seems to be accepted interview attire that must be worn when attending an interview. Males and Females, all dress in black suits, with white shirts underneath – with males to wear simple and dark colored ties. During the interview, they would all sit very upright, all would bow when entering the room, place their hands on the laps and very often they would hold minimal eye contact. They would project their voice loud to portray confidence, they would talk in the Korean formal dialect at all times and will treat every question, every moment with extreme clarity and the utmost professionalism. When the interview concludes, they will all stand hands by their sides, bow 90 degrees and thank all the interviewers for their precious time and opportunity. As soon as they leave the interview room, I could hear all their sighs of relief and commended each other on their efforts. More and more I learn about the Korean culture it inspires me. Their patriotism, their respect for each, their values, their appreciation, their motivation, their desires and passion – it truly was an experience for me (even as a recruiter) and can’t help but feel truly impressed and motivated to live for every moment. • Monitoring bespoke software with Zenoss

  We've got a lot of back-end applications that we need to monitor the performance of (metrics such as orders waiting to be processed, time since last run, etc). Currently, this is done by an in-house watchdog application that fires out emails whenever a threshold is exceeded, but there's no way to acknowledge an issue and squelch these alerts. Rather than build our own complete alerting system, we'd like to tie in to the Zenoss installation we use to monitor our servers. I've found a few articles on creating events programmatically, but I'd rather Zenoss itself monitors the values that the current watchdog app is looking at (so we get the benefits of graphing and history as well). Is it possible, then, to programmatically provide a data feed (rather than an event) to Zenoss? Or is there another way to go about this?

• Sound stopped working

  I ran through the troubleshooting at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting It did not play the test sound, and it also does not play sounds during speaker-test. It does play sounds when I adjust my volume on my computer (using pommed). It worked just the other day, but this is the first time I've tested it since last night, when I put it to pm-suspend-hybrid and it half-woke up (the backlight came on, but it didn't fully wake up), then went back, then half-woke again, but was frozen like that. I had to do a manual reboot of the machine when that happened. Now my sound doesn't work, except for adjusting the volume (where the little "beep" sound plays). During the troubleshooting, it recognized my sound card, the sound modules, and the sound card's installation. I've tried removing ~/.pulse, but to no avail. Also, if it's any help, pulseaudio is running, but pulseaudio --check returns nothing, which the manpage suggests indicates an error. Edit: I should probably clarify that the wake up from the suspend-hybrid was not provoked in any way. I was laying in bed when I noticed my room was brighter suddenly, so I got up to check on it.

• nvidia segfault crashes XServer (12.04 fresh install)

  I am on a fresh install of 12.04, and my video card is a Quadro FX 570, which appears to be supported (see output of unity_support_test below). But my Xserver crashes randomly and causes my session to just shutdown and bring me back to the logging screen. This happens several times per hour. • Using SQL Server specific code in Access linked to SQL Server database

  Hi, I have an access file that is linked (through an ODBC connection) to a SQL Server 2008 database. I am trying to write some reports against this database. However, Access chokes when I write the select query of the report with SQL syntax specific to SQL Server that doesn't exist in access. Shouldn't this work, since it's the SQL Server engine running the queries and just sending the data back to Access to display? Is there any way to get this to work?
