  • Is there any legal problems for design an operating system?

    Hi everybody.. My wondering is a Programming/Business question, so here what I am thinking about, One of my big goals is to design a Computer Operating System, however if it will be just for fun, knowledge or even to be the next Windows or Linux, so if I had Programmed one, with GUI (windows,lists,buttons,etc..) and for example I will make it for Commercial use, Will Microsoft or Apple comes and drop me in legal problems just like what happened in GUI war between the two of them(Apple and Microsoft)? This question arose while reading Javascript: The Good Parts and PHP Objects, Patterns and Practice. While understanding and avoiding easy pitfalls, is there a way I can learn the fundamentals of OOP and discover solid programming practices without overlooking important areas (or simply becoming jaded)?     If I type '<%# vs <%"' into any of the major search engines, everything is stripped out except the 'vs'. I understand why they do this.   • How to I configure a swap partition using swapspace

    I finally have the swapspace project installed and running (via init.d). The purpose is to have a dynamically re-sizing swap partition. I'm clueless however on how to use it. It has good documentation but just does not go into that last step. How to I configure a swap partition using swapspace? The process is probably the same for any 3rd party program that would provide a swap space implementation to the kernel. I know this was intended to run as a process because the project provides an init.d script.

  • We have a Solaris 9 server running Oracle 10G and have been getting memory consumption errors for a few weeks now

    We recently upgraded our Enterprise application and everything worked ok until one weekend when we did a server reboot, ever since then we have run into memory errors. The server has 4GB of physical memory installed and the kernel parameters are set to the following (/etc/system). I'm not an Oracle guy so I'm not sure where to start looking but any informaiton is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. There are two databases running on this server, one is a production database and the other is a pre-production database.     I currently have 5 tables in MySQL database. Some of them share foreign keys and are interdependent of each other. I am displaying classes accordingly to their majors. Each class is taught during the fall, spring or all_year. In my database I have a table named semester which has an id, year, and semester fields. The semester field in particular is a tinyint that has three values 0, 1, 2. This signifies the fall, spring or all_year. When I display the query instead of having it show 0 or 1 or 2 can I have it show fall, spring etc? Extra: How can I add space to the end of each loop so the data doesn't look clustered?     How do I get Ubuntu upstart to not hang on interactive start & stop? I have created many upstart scripts that work fine during init, but often hang when I enter them at the console. If I CTRL+C out, all that happens is that the job changes state. The script is never run. I’m running Ubuntu Lucid on a Xen virtual server with a Linux 2.6.39 kernel.
