• Retrofit WebForms with ASP.NET MVC - NoVa Code Camp 2010.2 Demo

  Thank you to everyone who attended my Retrofit WebForms with ASP.NET MVC session at NoVa Code 2010.2. It was a fun event for me and I hope you had a great time and learned something from it. I wish I had more time to go over some more important topics in more detail. I *promise* I will be writing blog post series about it since I'll have some vacation time during the December holidays to cover some topics that I didn't get to cover in detail.   Please note that the ".bak" file included in the zip file is a SQL Server Database backup file.   As some of you may have noticed, we've recently opened a new repository in the Code Tools project for small utilities which can be used to gather info about the OpenJDK code base and builds. 1 The latest addition is a utility for analyzing the class file versions in a collection of class files. I've posted an example set of results from analyzing the class files in an OpenJDK build on Linux. 2. Most of the files are version 52 files as you would expect, but there is a surprising number of version 51 and 50 files, as well as a handful of v45.3 files as well. Digging deeper, it turns out that Nashorn is still using version 51 class files, and the Serviceability Agent is still using version 50 class files and one 45.3 class file, leaving the remainder of the 45.3 class files coming from RMI. • Pulling in changes from a forked repo without a request on GitHub?

  I'm new to the social coding community and don't know how to proceed properly in this situation: I've created a GitHub Repository a couple weeks ago. Someone forked the project and has made some small changes that have been on my to-do. I'm thrilled someone forked my project and took the time to add to it. I'd like to pull the changes into my own code, but have a couple of concerns. 1) I don't know how to pull in the changes via git from a forked repo. My understanding is that there is an easy way to merge the changes via a pull request, but it appears as though the forker has to issue that request? 2) Is it acceptable to pull in changes without a pull request? This relates to the first one. I'd put the code aside for a couple of weeks and come back to find that what I was going to work on next was done by someone else, and don't want to just copy their code without giving them credit in some way. Shouldn't there be a to pull the changes in even if they don't explicitly ask you to? What's the etiquette here I may be over thinking this, but thanks for your input in advance. I'm pretty new to the hacker community, but I want to do what I can to contribute!

• Error while installing Komparator4

  I downloaded Komparator source from this page. The INSTALL file in the source say the following: Unpack komparator4-xxx.tar.bz2, and open a shell inside this directory mkdir build cd build cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` .. make sudo make install I unpacked the file, make the directory, entered this, but when I have tried to cmake (sentece Nº3) the terminal print the following errors disabling me to make & install: CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake-2.8/Modules/FindKDE4.cmake:98 (MESSAGE): ERROR: cmake/modules/FindKDE4Internal.cmake not found in /home/lucio/.kde/share/apps;/usr/share/kde4/apps Call Stack (most recent call first): CMakeLists.txt:2 (find_package) CMake Warning (dev) in CMakeLists.txt: No cmake_minimum_required command is present. • Is this method of writing Unit Tests correct?

  I have created a small C# project to help me learn how to write good unit tests. I know that one important rule of unit testing is to test the smallest 'unit' of code possible so that if it fails you know exactly what part of the code needs to fixed. I need help with the following before I continue to implement more unit tests for the project: If I have a Car class, for example, that creates a new Car object which has various attributes that are calculated when its' constructor method is called, would the two following tests be considered as overkill? Should there be one test that tests all calculated attributes of the Car object instead? • Database Driven Web Application, C# Front-End and F# Back-End meaning

  Hi I am an intern working with ASP.NET. My current task is to make a website which will incorporate some jquery viewing features. This project seems to me will be primarily dealing with reading data from a database and making graphs out of them. This will require me to make custom queries from whatever the client is looking at. I think it is going to be what this guy calls an Ad Hoc Query tool My plan for this is to make it a database-driven website. So I can utilize the jquery dynamic viewing capabilities. I stumbled upon the functional programming paradigm and found F#. I read that because of it's functional programming paradigm, it makes it a good language to do asynchronous functions. I read about how you can use this with LINQ to SQL and how easy it is to make queries without actually putting the query language in. I understand the concept of the MVC design pattern. But I don't understand what they mean about C# being the front-end and F# being the back-end. Can someone clarify this to me? Also what are your thoughts about doing this project in this way? Any comments and thoughts are greatly appreciated. I feel as if learning F# will be a great learning experience for me. My guess is that the F# back-end is like the part where it controls the calls to the database. F# is possibly the model part of the design pattern. And C# is the controller. So HTML, Javascript and Jquery stuff will be my View design pattern. Clarify please?

• Jenkins projects not visible even though user has all privleges

  We want to lock down Jenkins and specific jobs to certain personnel. I have my account with all global privileges granted with project based matrix security. A coworker has a similar account and has been granted all the same privileges. When I log in with my account, I can see all of the projects we have setup. When my coworker whom has the exact same privileges logs in, none of the projects are visible. I've double and triple checked the permissions matrix to make sure we have the same global privileges; we do. Some of the projects have project specific privileges setup as well, but again; I've confirmed that both of us have the same access to these projects as well. So why can I see all the projects and my coworker is unable to see any of the projects?

I use grub2 to boot the system off this partition. On top of this raid10 I installed two volume groups, one for /, one for /home. This system worked well, I even exchanged two disks during the last two years. It always worked. But not this time. For the first time, /dev/sda broke. I do not know if this is an issue – I know I would have struggled anyways to overcome the problem with /boot installed on that disk and grub2 installed on the mbr of /dev/sda. Rebooting into knoppix does not help Restarting the old system (I actually replugged and re-added the failing disk for that – the system begins to start, but then fails to see the / partition – no wonder if the volume group is gone) does not help. sudo vgscan, sudo vgdisplay, sudo lvs, sudo lvdisplay, sudo vgscan –mknodes all returned No volume groups found. I am completely at a loss. Can anyone tell me if and how I can recover my data? Thanks in advance!

• Where can I find design exercises to work on?

  I feel it's important to continue practicing my problem-solving skills. Writing my own mini-projects is one way, but another is to try and solve problems posted online. It's easy to find interesting programming quizzes online that require applying clever algorithms to solve - Project Euler is one well-known example. However, in a lot of real-life projects the design of the software - especially in the initial phases - has a large impact and at later stages it cannot be tweaked as easily as plain algorithms. In order to improve these skills, I'm looking for any collection of design problems. When I say "design", I mean the abstract design of a software solution - for example what modules will there be and what are the dependencies between them, how data will flow in the program, what sort of data needs to be saved in the database, etc. Design problems are those problems that are critical to solve in the early stages of any project, but their solution is a whiteboard diagram without a single line of code. Of course these sort of problems do not have a single correct solution, but I'll be especially happy with any place that also displays pros and cons of the typical solutions that might be used to approach the problem.

• How to deal with OpenGL and Fullscreen on OS X

  I do most of my development on OS X and for my current game project this is my target environment. However when I play games I play on Windows. As a windows gamer I am used to Alt+Tab switching from within the game to the last application that was open. On OS X I currently can't find either a game that supports that nor can I find a way to make it possible. My current project is based on SDL 1.3 and I can see that cmd+tab is a sequence that is sent directly to my application and not intercepted by the operating system. Now my first attempt was to hide the rendering window on cmd+tab which certainly works, but has the disadvantage that a hidden OpenGL window in SDL cannot be restored when the user tabs back to the application. First of all, there is no event fired for that or I can't find it, secondly the core problem is that when that application window is hidden, my game is still the active application, just that the window disappeared. That is incredible annoying. Any ideas how to approximate the windows / linux behavior for alt+tab?

  hi all, I am using VSpere 4.0 for my project work. I needed 4-5 servers my project work which is based on Database. I felt the virtualisation is very good to get the 5 servers running good at the same time. It was running good until few days back. Yesterday, it suddenly crashed and i had no idea of the reason.Today, it did not even boot up. Now, i need to take the data backup from that system. In order to do the same, i got the hard drive from the machine and tried to mount it on local linux machine.But, i was not successful. The disk was not even recognized by the linux machine. Can some one please tell me how to mount it and get the required data? Thank you all

• How to push to github from a server account with multiple users?

  We have a web server which contains a web application stored as a github project. Now all of us can push from our local machines to github and then pull on the server but sometimes we want to make small changes and immediately see the effect so it would be great to be able to push at the server too. Now I created an ssh key for the server but I don't want to add the servers ssh key to my github account because then all github actions done from the server are counted to my account. Is it possible to add the ssh key to the github web application project without creating a new user for the server and what is the best practice for this situation? I also don't want to copy my private key to the server obviously.

• What is the correct root file to import to aptana from an xampp folder/existing web app or git repository?

  Very noob question - all of this is new to me - not really sure how to get started. Overview: I'm taking over an existing wep project that has been developed in aptana and deployed in xampp setup - I also have access to Git repository on local directory. I want to import the web application into aptana, run it and begin updating/editing - bit of steep learning curve for me What is the best way to import? And what should I import? What should it look like in aptanan? I tried importing what I think is the root file from the git folder ("existing folder as new project")- it contains things like css, doc, img and js. • HUD layer not being added on my scene

  I have a CCScene which already holds my gameLayer and I am trying to add HUD layer on that.But the HUD layer is not getting added in my scene, I can say that because I have set up a CCLabel on HUD layer and when I run my project, I cannot see that label. • JDK8 New Build Infrastructure

  I unintentionally posted this before I verified everything, so once I have verified it all works, I'll updated this post. But this is what should work... Most Interesting Builder in the World: "I don't always build the jdk, but when I do, I prefer The New JDK8 Build Infrastructure. Stay built, my friends." So the new Build Infrastructure changes have been integrated into the jdk8/build forest along side the older Makefiles (newer in makefiles/ and older ones in make/). The default is still the older makefiles. Instructions can be found in the Build-Infra Project User Guide. The Build-Infra project's goal is to create the fastest build possible and correct many of the build issues we have been carrying around for years. I cannot take credit for much of this work, and wish to recognize the people who do so much work on this (and will probably still do more), see the New Build Infrastructure Changeset for a list of these talented and hard working JDK engineers. A big "THANK YOU" from me. Of course, every OS and system is different, and the focus has been on Linux X64 to start, Ubuntu 11.10 X64 in particular. So there are at least a base set of system packages you need. On Ubuntu 11.10 X64, you should run the following after getting into a root permissions situation (e.g. have run "sudo bash"): apt-get install aptitude aptitude update aptitude install mercurial openjdk-7-jdk rpm ssh expect tcsh csh ksh gawk g++ build-essential lesstif2-dev Then get the jdk8/build sources: hg clone http://hg.openjdk.java.net/jdk8/build jdk8-build cd jdk8-build sh ./get_source.sh Then do your build: cd common/makefiles bash ../autoconf/configure make We still have lots to do, but this is a tremendous start. -kto

  Hello, I have a project where we need a completely redundant system like the one offered by Remus with a Xen virtualization system. I wondered if there is a system like this one built by VMWare or some other company because the project is a very critical one and we do not want to have to wait that a bug is fixed by "the community" and money is not a problem. What Remus does is to build a completely redundant system where you can shutdown one machine and the other continues the work where the other left it maintaining the network connections opened, etc Any hint? • Numbers not adding up? (What am I not understanding here?) [closed]

  I have the following output: Short version: The last numbers on the S= lines increase by H and SHOULD theoretically be linearly decreasing, ex: -285,-290,-295...but the fourth one jumps to -252. Yet, every other number is linearly increasing. Why is that and how could I fix that? To explain the numbers, it comes from slider value changed. I have a slider whose value is used to generate the float on the next line. Everything should be growing linearly here. This value is used to determine the size of a flow layout and it is also used in conjunction with a scrollbar. But basically I have a background for the flow layout and that number is the start location for rendering it. The numbers should linearly change to create a smooth transition but when that one jumps, it looks weird on screen and I dont understand why the numbers are jumping every X slider value changes. Mathematically what could be causing this? • Designs for outputting to a spreadsheet

  I'm working on a project where we are tasked to gather and output various data to a spreadsheet. We are having tons of problems with the file that holds the code to write the spreadsheet. The cell that the data belongs to is hardcoded, so anytime you need to add anything to the middle of the spreadsheet, you have to increment the location for all the fields after that in the code. There are random blank rows, to add padding between sections, and subsections within the sections, so there's no real pattern that we can replicate. Essentially, anytime we have to add or change anything to the spreadsheet it requires a many long and tedious hours. The code is all in this one large file, hacked together overtime in Perl. I've come up with a few OO solutions, but I'm not too familiar with OO programming in Perl and all my attempts at it haven't been great, so I've shied away from it so far. I've suggested we handle this section of the program with a more OO friendly language, but we can't apparently. I've also suggested that we scrap the entire spreadsheet idea, and just move to a webpage, but we can't do that either. We've been working on this project for a few months, and every time we have to change that file, we all dread it. I'm thinking it's time to start some refactoring. However, I don't even know what could make this file easier to work with. The way the output is formatted makes it so that it has to be somewhat hardcoded. I'm wondering if anyone has insight on any design patterns or techniques they have used to tackle a similar problem. I'm open to any ideas. Perl specific answers are welcome, but I am also interested in language-agnostic solutions.

• How safe is it to rely on thirdparty Python libs in a production product?

  I'm new to Python and come from the write-everything-yourself world of PHP (at least this is how I always approached it). I'm using Flask, WTForms, Jinja2, and I've just discovered Flask-Login which I want to use. My question is about the reliability of using thirdparty libraries for core functionality in a project that is planned to be around for several years. I've installed these libraries (via pip) into a virtualenv environment. What happens if these libraries stop being distributed? Should I back up these libraries (are they eggs)? Can I store these libraries in my project itself, instead of relying on pip to install them in a virtualenv? And should I store these separately? I'm worried that I'll rely on a library for core functionality, and then one day I'll download an incompatible version through pip, or the author or maintainer will stop distributing it and it'll no longer be available. How can I protect against this, and ensure that any thirdparty libraries that I use in my projects will always be available as they are now?

• How to set up Aptana Studio 3 with a Bitbucket private repo

  I have just started playing around with Git and would like to push a personal project to a newly created, private repo on Bitbucket using Aptana Studio 3. I tried to use the Git integration in Aptana but I couldn't figure out where to enter my username and password for Bitbucket anywhere. I tried using the Team > Share Project context menu but that keeps throwing the following message: Warning: Permanently added the RSA host key for IP address '207.223.240.181' to the list of known hosts. Permission denied (publickey). fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly I'm pretty sure that's because my repo is private. However, I couldn't find a provision to provide any form of credentials for linking to a private repo. Any ideas?

  I am working on PHP and MySQL based web application for more than 5 years now. I started my career from Intern - Jr Developer - Software Developer - Sr. Software Engineer [Team Lead] that's what I am nowadays. I was looking at the link at Wikipedia regarding who is a lead programmer. The link states the following: A lead programmer is a software engineer in charge of one or more software projects. Alternative titles include Development Lead, Technical Lead, Senior Software Engineer, Software Design Engineer Lead (SDE Lead), Software Manager, or Senior Applications Developer. When primarily contributing in a high-level enterprise software design role, the title Software Architect (or similar) is often used. All of these titles can have different meanings depending on the context. My current job responsibilities are more or less like a Development Lead and to some extent near Software Architect because I usually design the core structure of new products and managing 2-3 project simultaneously and in the meantime involved in assisting other teams regarding the structural design of their projects, I am usually on call with clients along with project managers, I code most of the time when my team stuck somewhere / workload / integrating some third party API and etc. Primary reason of this writing is to know if I qualify for a Development Lead Title? in accordance with my above mentioned job descriptions?
