• Computer freezing while watching Flash videos from net

  I have a Windows 7 home basic, while watching videos from net (within 5 minutes) computer starts to freeze and shows 100 percent CPU usage. I first thought it's a browser issue but watching videos from different browsers also has the same issue. My system runs the latest Firefox browser and all my plugins (including Flash) is up-to-date. After this when I shutdown/restart the computer it will go to the login window with out any problem. From there when I tried to log in to any account, the system starts to freeze and again I have to start and run Windows in safe mode (which doesn't show any problem). I read it in an article to do these steps CMD->sfc/scannow chkdsk after that only my system works normally, even now I can't watch any videos on the net otherwise it starts freezing( I can watch downloaded videos in computer without a problem) and have to do the whole process once more (which takes a lot of time). while running sfc/scannow its showed results that some of the files are corrupted and it could not be repaired. Can this be the cause for freezing of my computer while running Flash videos? or is it a hardware related problem? What different steps do I have to take to correct those corrupt files? System restore works only some times.

  I've got a wireless keyboard that puts some media keys on top of the Function keys, so that by default F4 is actually lock (Rwin & l) and Fn+F4 is a real F4. So I'd like to basically switch those around. Here's what the key history shows: VK SC Type Up/Dn Elapsed Key ------------------------------------- 73 03E d 17.32 F4 ; Fn+F4 73 03E u 0.16 F4 5C 15C d 2.96 Right Windows ; F4 4C 026 d 0.00 L 5C 15C u 0.13 Right Windows 4C 026 u 0.00 L This doesn't do anything: SC15C & SC026::MsgBox,Pressed F4 But this prints that I hit F4 then goes to the login screen: Rwin & l::MsgBox,Pressed F4 So how can I stop it from switching to the login screen? Ideally I'd like F4 (which registers as Rwin & l) to just send F4, Fn+F4 to send Rwin & l, and also have them work with other keys (e.g., a manual !F4 should still close a window). Is this possible?

• System With Two Network Adapters

  Hi, My system has a NIC (Marvell Yukon) built-into the motherboard, but I also have a D-Link (RealTek) card. I figure that using the D-Link and disabling the Marvell makes the most sense, though I'm wondering if maybe the built-in one has better throughput (not that my Internet connection is so fast). Also, I'm wondering about the merits of using both at the same time. My router has four ports and I have experimented with enabling and plugging both NICs into the router. I was able to connect to the Internet, but the pattern of usage seemed irregular (which adapter was chosen for the transfer and any given point). I also considered bridging the two, but am having difficulty in finding out what exactly creating network bridge does in the context of the Windows Network Connections window. I am familiar with the concept of connecting networks, so it seems to me that birding two connections on the same segment is pointless at best (and can cause problems like loops?) Does anyone have any tips on what to do if a system has more than one NIC and any clarification on the bridge option? Thanks a lot.

Together with acl group control for Samba, it allows me to delegate management of permissions to different users based on group membership. Thing is, when I create a new file on a Samba share, I'm unable to set its primary group (the one that grants permission to change its permissions). It's being set to my primary group (Domain Users) or group set using force group option in smb.conf share definition. Removing all groups in windows except the one I want to become the new primary group doesn't work. I can change it using chgrp group folder/ as regular user though shell, but it's suboptimal (not all users are *nix users). • Windows 7 / TCP/IP network share guide - looking for to resolve failure to mount lacie network drive but works on XP,Linux,Mac.

  Can anyone advise me of a really good, readable, Windows 7 TCP/IP network share guide, book, or reference. I want this because I cannot mount my Lacie 2big ethernet network drive in Windows 7 (32 bit home), but I can mount it in Windows XP Home 32bit, Ubuntu Linux 10.04 and Apple MacOS X. This drive is being mounted via the accompanying Lacie Ethernet Agent in XP (which I believe uses "Bonjour" protocol), on Mac and Linux it works without further need for software. Another Super User user has the same problem, but no answer: Trouble accessing network drives in Windows 7 I hope my take on the question shows a better willingness to investigate and do some digging - and therefore invite some suggestions to help with this. The drive is detected by Windows 7 (i.e. speech bubble "network drive found") but on trying to open an Explorer window, this remains blank with the Windows busy pointer. I'd prefer not to reinstall Windows 7 to see if that cures the problem, I'd rather understand what is happening/not happening, perhaps even compare differences with Windows XP.   Hi, I'm having pretty similar problems as described in case 139099, but the fix there doesn't seem to work for me. Here's the details: Server: Win2003Srv R2 SP2 (stadalone, not a member of a domain). IIS6, TCP/443 (https). Anonymous access disabled. Integrated Windows authentication enabled. Local useraccouts Each useraccount has own virtual folder with change access and read access to site root. The 'adsutil NTAuthenticationProviders "NTLM"' -thing set to site root and useraccount's virtual folder. Client: Win7 Enterprise Member of a AD-Domain IE8 Allows three login attepts then fails. Using [webservername][username] in the logon window (Windows security) Logon using other browsers (Chrome and Firefox) works OK. The Web services log shows one 401.2 and two 401.1 events. • How do I restore tab-completion on shell variables on the bash command-line?

  I've long set my most-recently visited directories to shell variables d1, d2, etc. On an ancient Fedora machine I could type a command like $ cp $d1/ and the shell would replace $d1 with text like /home/acctname/projects/blog/ and would then show me the contents of .../blog, like any tab-completion. Now, both ubuntu wheezy/sid and fedora 16 just -escape the '$', and naturally there are no completions to show. You can see this behavior in action in an OSX Terminal window. On 10.8, do something like ls $HOME/ to see what I mean. Is there a bash shell variable or option that can restore the old behavior? man bash suggests this is a bug: complete (TAB) Attempt to perform completion on the text before point. Bash attempts completion treating the text as a variable (if the text begins with $), username (if the text begins with ~), hostname (if the text begins with @), or command (including aliases and functions) in turn. If none of these produces a match, filename completion is attempted. I get the above described completion when a token starts with '~' or a letter. It's just '$'-completion that's broken.

• Kickstarting an Ubuntu Server 10.04 installation (DHCP fails)

  I'm trying to automate the network installation of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with an anaconda kickstart and everything seems to running except for the initial DHCP autoconfiguration. The installer attempts to configure the install via DHCP but fails on its first attempt. This brings me to a prompt where I can retry DHCP and it seems to always work on the second attempt. My issue is that this is not really automated if I have to hit retry for DHCP. Is there something I can add to the kickstart file so that it will automatically retry or better yet not fail the first time? Thanks. • Ubuntu Launcher Items Don't Have Correct Environment Vars under NX

  I've got an environment variable issue I'm having trouble resolving. I'm running Ubuntu (Karmic, 9.10) and coming in via NX (NoMachine) on a Mac. I've added several environment variables in my .bashrc file, e.g.: export JAVA_HOME=$HOME/dev/tools/Linux/jdk/jdk1.6.0_16/ Sitting at the machine, this environment variable is available on the command line, as well as for apps I launch from the Main Menu. Coming in over NX, however, the environment variable shows up correctly on the command line, but NOT when I launch things via the launcher. As an example, I created a simple shell script called testpath in my home folder: #!/bin/sh echo $PATH && sleep 5 quit I gave it execute privileges: chmod +x testpath And then I created a launcher item in my Main Menu that simply runs: ./testpath When I'm sitting at the computer, this launcher runs and shows all the stuff I put into the $PATH variable in my .bashrc file (e.g. $JAVA_HOME, etc). But when I come in over NX, it shows a totally different value for the $PATH variable, despite the fact that if I launch a terminal window (still in NX), and type export $PATH, it shows up correctly. I assume this has to do with which files are getting loaded by the windowing system over NX, and that it's some other file. But I have no idea how to fix it. • How intrusive is using VPN?

  My company lets us work from home sometimes using VPN (during weather emergencies and stuff). When logging in a big window comes up that says the network is private and for employees only and that there's no right to privacy while using VPN. It makes sense that they don't want people poking around their network but I wonder if the company can use the connection to look around my computer while I'm connected. I'm not entirely computer-illiterate but I'm not a networks person at all so the technical documents I've found don't help me. Is that possible, and if so to what degree? UPDATE Thanks Mark. The funneling thing is what I was really asking about. Mostly I was worried that I would already have some IM conversation open or log into eBay forgetting that the VPN was open and that my company IT people would see it or that they would log my eBay password. Thanks again. ANOTHER UPDATE What if my son wants to play online poker or Warcraft etcetera while I have VPN on to work? Can my company think I'm the one playing if I am not typing often?

• Ubuntu Server Wireless connection issue - replaced router but kept ESSID

  I have a ubuntu server 12.04 which was connected to my wireless network with no problem I replaced the wireless router but kept the ESSID and password the same. All other devices on network have connected correctly. However the Ubuntu Server will not route correctly. It will connect to the wifi router, and get a dhcp served IP address, however it will not route anything. I cannot ping the router from the server. the contents of /etc/resolve.conf are updated with the information from the router, (the host name has been served) I know there is nothing wrong with the router or the server, or the wireless card etc. I'm assuming there's some cached setting that associates the old router with the ESSID and causing the issue. I've got a lot of other devices connected to the router, so don't want to change the name of the ESSID. How do I fix this?   I like to add existing vmware (player) virtual machines to the vmware workstation 8 inventory on linux. When I create a new virtual machine, it is stored in /var/lib/vmware/Shared VMs/. But copying new directories to that folder, does not make them appear in the workstation window. I found out, the inventory is stored in /etc/vmware/hostd/vmInventory.xml; <ConfigRoot> <ConfigEntry id="0000"> <objID>1</objID> <vmxCfgPath>/var/lib/vmware/Shared VMs/test 1234/test 1234.vmx</vmxCfgPath> </ConfigEntry> </ConfigRoot> But I don't know if I break anything when adding entries myself, and giving it an unique ID. Besides, adding a large number of VMs this way is a bit cumbersome. On ESX, it was possible to use vmware-cmd -s register, but I don't have a vmware-cmd installed. In another question it was suggested to use vmware converter. But vmware converter 5 (on windows) only allows a destination file location when I select workstation as destination type. When I select vmware infrastructure as destination type, it says the destination is unsupported; it required vmware vcenter server.

• Chrome will not load a web page with an <embed> element

It plays in IE, but not in Firefox or Chrome. My problem: Chrome reports "Could not load VLC Plugin". It seems to be a known problem that the VLC community don't necessarily feel like fixing at the moment, and is a result of Google choosing not to allow some certain kind of plugin. If I disable the plugin I no longer get the message but nothing happens when I click the button. Looking at the console in a debug window I see Uncaught TypeError: undefined is not a function Sound.html:7 PlaySound Sound.html:7 onclick which suggests Chrome could not find anything else to handle the sound file. How to I tell Chrome to use (e.g.) Windows Media Player? * UPDATE * This is apparently because the VLC plugin is a NPAPI plugin and Chrome no longer supports these. I have uninstalled VLC and this has removed the error on loading the webpage with an embedded sound element, but it still doesn't invoke WMP instead.

• Firefox won't start

  OK, I've got this problem again, only this time the problem only seems to affect Firefox and Thunderbird. Rebooted several times. Tried resetting to the last restore point, but that didn't work. Tried setting a new Firefox profile, and that didn't work either. The symptom is that you click on the Firefox or Thunderbird icon, the process appears in the Process Explorer list, but the window never opens. Curiously, if Firefox has been "started" this way, Internet Explorer hangs starting until I kill the Firefox process. Any ideas? I suppose the next thing to try is uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox/Thunderbird, but this whole thing is getting old. The box is a Sony Vaio running Windows Vista. It was completely restored from scratch less than two weeks ago, after the last fiasco. (I'm suspecting that my aborted install of Acronis True Image may have mucked things up this time.) Sigh! Another symptom: It occurred to me to try printing something, but if I open "Printers" it just sits there "searching". So something is rotten in the bowels of Windows. Minor update: It occurred to me to kill Internet Explorer (where I'd attempted printing). Then Printers comes up fairly quickly -- with no printers defined. Clicking "Add a printer" does nothing. Update: Well, following this suggestion to stop and restart the print spooler brought the printers back. And, wonder of wonders, Firefox now starts OK. Stopping and restarting the print spooler!!

• Could 0x800CCC0E in Outlook be caused by bad wireless connection?

  I have a computer connected to a WiFi access point/router/modem. Sometimes, I get page not found errors and similar when opening a browser window, sometimes pings fail and it looks like the router's signal isn't very good. On the other hand, I get around 4 bars of signal strength in windows and graph looks good in Inssider. I also never get dropped connection to the router. My main problem is that I often get errors (such as 0x800CCC0E) in Outlook 2010 that after some searching appear to be connected to bad server connection. I'm using GMail over IMAP and all settings are correct. I didn't have similar errors on my previous router, but I'm not 100% sure that they appeared after switching to current one. It may have worked for some time without errors. There are also around 3000 messages on the server and the size of mailbox is around 12 GiB, which may contribute to the problems. On the other hand, there are at least 24 other networks in the 2.4 GHz range which I'm using and the number may have increased since I switched routers. Should I try solving this by getting a router with stronger signal?

• Java: compile and run hanging at command prompt

  I'm having an issue that I'm hoping someone can help with. I'm working on netbook running WinXP Pro SP3, 1.6GHz & 1GB of RAM. I've got a relatively simple java program that I'm able to successfully compile and run on other computers (both XP and Win7), so I suspect my code is working fine--I've verified that all computers are running the same version of Java (build 1.7.0_02-b13). For about the past week, I get maybe three or four compiles and runs at the command prompt (running CMD from within WinXp) before I hang with a blinking cursor after keying my command and pressing enter. If I shut down the command prompt window and restart it, I can compile and run the program just fine--again, pointing to an OS/environment issue rather than code. The only system change I've made in the past week is to uninstall a Lexmark printer that I ditched a year ago, and removing/reinstalling Java. Oh, and an automatic Windows update... :\ I've used this netbook successfully for programming classes for the past year and a half. Anyone familiar with this issue and know of some system tweaks to solve it? I suspect that memory may not be getting cleaned up when the java program quits...only when CMD closes, but don't know any tools to troubleshoot. Ideas?

• Onboard Ethernet suddenly stopped working to router

  Hey guys, yesterday I have a sudden problem of my Ethernet connection to my router. My computer is a Pendium 4 with Window XP SP3 running on it and it was working fine earlier in the day, but yesterday night was the start of the problem. My computer is unable to ping to the router and to any other website and unable to get internet connection. As beside it was connected to a hub, I directly connected it to the router directly and the same problem occurred, being unable to ping to the router (and connecting to it) and still no internet access. My directly connected to the modem and the problem still persisted. For each connection, I connected it to my computer and my laptop and my laptop was able to connect, while my desktop computer was unable. I wondered if it was a OS issue and ran a live Ubuntu CD to see if Ubuntu was able to connect to the internet, but the issue persisted and I was unable to get internet access. I then set my router's lease time to 1 hour and waited. After 1 hour, the lease for my computer was removed and I hoped this worked, but it didn't work, but something strange is acting up. My desktop computer is still unable to ping to the router or connect to the internet, but for some reason, my router and desktop computer is still able to contact each other by providing a lease of an local ip address. The router record of a lease to my desktop computer, and when I do ipconfig, my desktop also recognize that it has been provided a local ip address. I have concluded that this is a hardware issue and the only solution to fix this is to by a network card adapter, but I am wondering if anyone has any solutions that could explain why this happen, why my mac address is 01-23-45-67-89-ab, and is there any way to fix it without buying a new network card? • WSUS registry file: NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers entry being ignored

  We are using a registry entry to connect our internal workstations to our WSUS server and everything seems to be working except the NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers entry. Without fail, over the last few weeks, our lab setup as well as our users have been prompted to restart their machines with a 15 minute time out and there's nothing they can do about it. They can't postpone or cancel the restart, all options in the prompt are greyed out.   Appreciate all advice 0n the following questions Which database systems (Ms SQL 2008, MS SQL Compact, or others) comes installed with VS2010 Express edition. SQL Server 2008 R2 Express is free, can we install and integrate with VS2010 Express? How to uninstall those database already come installed? I have installed VS2010 express on Windows 7; just VS2010 components (VB, C#, C++ and Web Developer) and without installing any other things like SQL Express. These are actually installed by installing VS2010 Express, but I have no idea how to use them or verify their valid existence from VS2010. Also, do I have to uninstall them before I install SQL Server 2008 R2, which is the latest version I believe? And what tool is needed to manage and create data source and tables?

• Can I disable the message line when launching ``screen -RR``

  screen -RR is great. It does one of the two thing automatically: If there is any detached screen session, it picks up one can attach to it. If there is no detached screen session(no session yet, or all have been attach to other terminal), it creates a new screen session automatically. I use Windows server Remote Desktop a lot, screen -RR behaves almost the same when a client connects to a remote desktop server. It is natural and I like it. However, when screen -RR determines it should create a new session, it displays a message line at terminal bottom for 5 second. I'd like to suppress this message line because it brings us little benefit. In my opinion, a remote user can always easily distinguish whether he is connected to a resumed session(a piled-up display) or a newly created session(a clean display) from what he sees in the terminal window. So, is there a way to suppress the nag "New screen..." ? Just suppress that very one, not suppress message line globally. My env: opensuse 11.3, GNU screen 4.00.03 (FAU) 23-Oct-06

• 64-bit Windows 7 gets stuck on logo screen on bootup

  I've had a PC running Windows 7 in my office which I'm not using at the moment (cause I'm working elsewhere as a consultant atm), I'm only accessing the PC using Team Viewer (http://www.teamviewer.com/) which means the PC has been running for quite some time now. I've restarted it maybe twice a week though. A few days ago I couldn't access it using Team Viewer and when I got to the office the screen was black with only the mouse pointer showing. The PC has four hard disks, three of them (all 1Tb) is using RAID 5. This is what I've done so far: I reboot and everything seems to load correctly. I get to a screen that gives me two choices - boot Windows normally or perform a startup repair. Choosing to boot Windows only gets me to the Windows 7 logo screen which only animates over and over again. Choosing to repair gets me to the repair screen that "checks for problems" and then it gets stuck on the "Attempting repairs..."-screen (I let it run for about 24 hours before giving up). What is the next step to take? I don't have any backups and no system restore points saved. I can access files and folders through a terminal window using a Windows 7 DVD so I guess nothing is lost yet... Please help me, thanks!

• Remote Desktop leaves host unresponsive

  I have my desktop PC at home set up to accept remote connections, and I often connect to it from work on my laptop via mstsc.exe. However, every time I remote to it, I find when I go home that despite the monitor being on - it's not receiving an image and it looks as though the computer is hibernating/asleep. I basically have to restart it whenever I get home and I know there's an answer for why its doing this. More details: When exiting the remote session, I have tried both logging off the account, and closing the RDP window without logging off; both give the same result. When I get home to the desktop I of course try moving the mouse, ctrl+alt+del to see if its responsive to restart, multiple key-press to see if I can get any audio out of it; It seems pretty obvious its sleeping/hibernating in some way: Nothing happens in any of these cases and a physical restart is necessary. Both desktop and laptop are running Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm thinking it really is sleeping/hibernating it, and I'm not sure why because left alone my desktop's power options are set to never turn off the HDD or change its state - I leave it on 24/7. This could be a stupid error on my part but I just can't see it! Thanks.

Any real life usage? <dest ip> <next hop> ip route 100.0.0.2 255.255.255.255 100.0.0.2 weight 1 next-hop-vrf GlobalRouter Above is the command on a router inside a VRF. 100.0.0.2 is pingable from host. 100.0.0.1 & 100.0.0.2 are an ip address assigned to a VLAN on host & destination respectively. On a linux box, Such configuration is valid. [root]# netstat -r -n Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 55.55.55.55 55.55.55.55 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 0 0 eth0 [root]# ip route show 55.55.55.55 via 55.55.55.55 dev eth0 As per my understanding, If a destination IP is reachable (i.e in the same subnet of host IP) we dont need a next hop. I came across one application for using next hop for destination IP in same subnet (i.e for VPN) See this: Will packets send to the same subnet go through routers? If next hop != destination IP but they are in same subnet as that of host, is a valid scenario for VPN, then i am wondering what are the applications of next_hop==dest_ip & subnet same as host? • Azure VM won't boot after sysprep; integration tools installed

  I have installed the Azure Integration Components and used sysprep on a Windows 2012 VM. Now the machine won't start up. I uploaded the VHD to Azure - it failed there too. When I start up the VM I get a PowerShell window that hangs out for a bit; eventually I get the following error, after which the machine restarts. New-Object: The dependency service or group failed to start. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007042C) At line1: char:1 New-Object -comobject WaAgent.WindowsSetupComponent | % { $_.HandleSetupError() ... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +CategoryInfo : ResourceUnavailable (:) [New-Object], COMException +FullyQualifiedErrorId: NoCOMClassIdentified,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.NewObjectCommand I have tried renaming unattended.xml and turning on bootlogging. Neither of those yielded much help. Is there a way I can disable the Azure components that run during OOBE? That seems to be the source of the problem. Mounting the VHD is easy. 0x8007042C looks like a firewall issue, based on my googling. Unfortunately I can't get the machine to boot so I can figure that issue out. Also, I can't get around this problem by booting into safe mode. Thanks for your help, guys.
