• How can I play a DVD-A (DVD-Audio) disc?

  I was able to play such a disc using VLC, but I am wondering if any music player supports the DVD-A format. UPDATE: I checked Rhythmbox and Banshee - I found no option like Play Disc or Open Disc, so I have no idea how I could even try to start playing a DVD-A disc. This has also nothing to do with missing plug-ins or codecs - the packages gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad and ubuntu-restricted-extras were installed on my machine before. I guess I am stuck with VLC (Totem shows a DVD menu, but then hangs). However, I am missing the regular music player experience - ability to change order of tracks, adding tracks to a playlist, listening only to selected tracks, etc. I found Idea #22415: Please add full support for DVD-Audio and LPCM at Ubuntu Brainstorm.

• Unity does not display properly [closed]

  Ubuntu Unity on the Ubuntu netbook edition installs without a problem but when I log in though, where the panels are, there is just blank area with a shadow effect style thing on it. I can open apps but the Window buttons and the global menu are not visable. Does this mean that I cannot use Unity. I'm running it through Wubi on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. My total ammount of graphics memory is 831MB My dedicated memory is 128MB. The odd thing is is that Windows Aero displays without a problem so why is there a problem with Unity Hope this helps Ben

• No wireless network recognized on a Dell Vostro 3560

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 along with Windows 7 on the same laptop - Dell Vostro 3560. Now, on Windows 7 I can access to different wi-fi networks. However, when I am logging onto the Ubuntu section (after re-starting my laptop) - an error message appears: Disconnected - you are now offline When I take a look at my network menu (in the upper bar on the screen), I see that no network is found (and I have a few of them in the area. ). I tried to look around but really could not find a concrete practical solution to this specific problem, would appreciate any solution from anyone out there that had this problem and solved it.

• Rendering Unity across multiple monitors

  At the moment I am trying to get unity to run across 2 monitors. I've done some research and know that this is, strictly, possible. There is a workaround where you basically have to fluff your window size in order to get unity to render across both monitors. What I've done is create a new custom screen resolution that takes in the width of both of my monitors, as seen in the following image, its the 3840 x 1080: How ever, when I go to run my unity game exe that size isn't available. All I get is the following: My custom size should be at the very bottom, but isn't. Is there something I haven't done, or missed, that will get unity to take in my custom screen size when it comes to running my game through its exe? Oddly enough, inside the unity editor, my custom screen size is picked up and I can have it set to that in my game window: Is there something that I have forgotten to do when I build and run the game from the file menu? Has someone ever beaten this issue before?

  I'm proficient with HTML and CSS but I'm still pretty shaky when it comes to Javascript. That said, I've been able to build a site using the Internet Archive Book Reader, which relies on reader.js Here's a copy of one of my versions of reader.js https://gist.github.com/dylan-k/ed4efed2384e221d46cc It's a good site, but I find I have to repeat things a lot. Basically, I have one copy of reader.js for every page/book featured on the site. It seems there must be a better way. I re-use the script, making copies, just so that I can change lines 28, 80, 83, 84. Is there a way I could include just one copy of reader.js and then use a <script> tag to define these 4 lines for the individual pages?

• To implement registration page with Vaadin or not?

  This is a tactical implementation question about usage of Vaadin or in some part of my application. Vaadin is a great framework to login users and implement sophisticated web applications with many pages. However, I think it is not very well suited to desgin pages to register new users for my application. Am I right? Am I am wrong? It seems to me that a simple HTML/CSS/Javascript login + email registration + confirmation email with confirmation link cannot be implemented easily with Vaadin. It seems like Vaadin would be overkill. Do you agree? Or am I missing something? I am looking for feedback from experienced Vaadin users.

• SOA Suite 11g (11.1.1.3): Creating a single server domain with SOA Suite and Oracle Service Bus func

  One of the major benefits of the latest version of the Oracle SOA products, SOA Suite 11gR1 PS2 (11.1.1.3) and Oracle Service Bus 11gR1 (11.1.1.3), is that both products depend on the same version of WebLogic Server 11g (10.3.3) and so can be installed in the same domain. If you are a developer building artifacts for both but with a laptop/desktop with limited resources then this is particularly useful, as you can install a single server domain (by default you get a domain with an admin server and multiple managed servers) which incorporates both sets of functionality. The viewlet below shows you how to go about creating such a single server domain, using the configuration wizard. Just click the Play button from the viewlet menu to start it. Note: As you have added all this functionality into a single server, it will take a few minutes to start up. As this is my first foray into the world of viewlets I’d be interested in your opinion as to whether you have found this useful and any tips/techniques for improving any future viewlets I may create. • KDE Sometimes Glitches On Wakeup

  Well, a picture is work 1k words: Looks bad, huh? I am using the 331-updates latest 331.67 drivers from NVidia's website on a Dell Latitude e6400. Everything else is up-to-date. This only happens when I resume from sleep, or I switch to a VT and back. It also doesn't ALWAYS happen, which I find odd. Graphics Card: Nvidia Quadro NVS160M UPDATE AFTER TESTING: This problem only exists with KDE (specifically QT). I can go into Unity or Mint or any non QT-based GUI and it works perfectly with no resume errors. UPDATE: This only happens when I use KWin (and KDE). I have upgraded to 14.04 and the problem is not occurring as frequently. Also, sometimes this effect doesn't happen, but instead the top menu bar simply goes out of focus with the rest of the screen goes blank.

• Can I remove the latest ubuntu version without having to reinstall the old version?

  I was using the 2.6 kernels with no problems, but when I updated to the 3.0 kernel, my bootup failed. I can manually boot with ctrl+alt+f1 startx and my login, but admittedly, i googled this and have no idea what I'm really doing. I have been trying to figure out how to go back to the old version, and eventually figured out the grub menu--i booted from all three 2.6 (.8, .10, and .11) editions of the previous version of ubuntu but they all had the same error as the 3.0 kernal. I can get logged in manually once the boot fails, but when i get to my desktop, wireless is not responsive and will not connect, and portable hard drives do not mount and/or are unresponsive. the previous version worked perfectly. I use an asus netbook. it's an eee pc. i don't have two OSs on it. i had to go to another computer to get to the forum... If the solution is simple, i just don't know what it is.

• Ubuntu 12.04 "Shutdown" or "Restart" logs out

  While logged in as a sudo user, click the right top power icon, then select and click "Shutdown" menu, it comes up with a dialog asking if I want to close all programs. The dialog has two options: restart or shutdown. Choose either one logs me out. Syslog has the following line about restart: WARNING: Unable to restart system: Authorization is required This happened after I installed NTP and some OpenStack packages while working in a prototype project. My Ubuntu's software is up to date as of this writing. Anyone encountered the same problem in 12.04?

• Ubuntu won't use my nvidia driver

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 on a laptop that has both Intel Integrated Graphics and an Nvidia Geforce 540m. I installed the drivers properly, but I can't manage to actually use them. I'm stuck in 640x480 resolution and the drivers aren't detected anywhere. Each time I open the Nvidia settings menu it says: "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (Just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart the X server." ^Doing so does not help. Anybody have any ideas?

• Web development tools/approaches?

  My day job involves a bit of programming, but I've recently been attempting some web development for personal reasons. I've got Drupal up and running and done basic things like add new content (i.e. heading and text) and add modules and themes, but I'm not sure how to approach actually designing pages. When I mucked around with webpages 15 years ago, it was just a mixture of HTML, CSS and Javascript, generally written with a text editor. Have things changed, or is this the way I'd make a Drupal page today? If it makes a difference, in my case the page's I want to design simply have static content, but I'd like them to be easily updatable.

• Ubuntu server 13 hangs on boot

  I formatted my WD30EFRX 3TB SATA HDD as GPT with the following layout: 200 MB FAT32 (BOOTABLE) 50GB EXT4 (Mount point: /) 4 GB SWAP SPACE ~2.9 TB EXT4 (with no mount point) Then i created a Flash USB using Rufus 1.3.3 and the following ISO-image: ubuntu-13.04-server-amd64.iso. I used following configuration to create the USB: GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer FAT32 (16KB) I successfully booted from this USB on my Intel D510MO motherboard in UEFI mode (there were a black and white boot loader menu instead of a colorful GUI) and installed the OS. During the boot loader installation i saw it was grub-efi-amd64 as it must be. After installation i removed the flash drive and tried to boot the system, but just after a BIOS POST it hangs (there is a white blinking cursor at the left top corner of the black screen) and nothing happens. UEFI Mode is enabled in the BIOS configuration and i've updated the BIOS to the latest firmware. What went wrong, how i can confirm that system was installed properly? How can i boot the OS?

• JustCode Provides Reflector Alternative

  If you've been a loyal Reflector user, you've probably been exposed to the debacle surrounding RedGate's decision to no longer offer a free version.  Since then, the race has begun for a replacement with a provider that would stand by their promises to the community.  Mono has an ongoing free alternative, which has been available for a long time.  However, other vendors are stepping up to the plate, with their own offerings. If Not Reflector, Then What? One of these vendors is Telerik.  In their recent Q1 2011 release of JustCode, Telerik offers a decompilation utility rivaling what we've become accustomed to in Reflector.  Not only does Telerik offer a usable replacement, but they've (in my opinion), produced a product that integrates more naturally with visual Studio than any other product ever has.  Telerik's decompilation process is so easy that the accompanying demo in this post is blindingly short (except for the presence of verbose narrative). If you want to follow along with this demo, you'll need to have Telerik JustCode installed.  If you don't have JustCode yet, you can buy it or download a trial at the Telerik Web site . A Tall Tale; Prove It! With JustCode, you can view code in the .NET Framework or any other 3rd party library (that isn't well obfuscated).  This demo depends on LINQ to Twitter, which you can download from CodePlex.com and create a reference or install the package online as described in my previous post on NuGet.  Regardless of the method, you'll have a project with a reference to LINQ to Twitter.  Use a Console Project if you want to follow along with this demo. Note:  If you've created a Console project, remember to ensure that the Target Framework is set to .NET Framework 4.  The default is .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, which doesn't work with LINQ to Twitter.  You can check by double-clicking the Properties folder on the project and inspecting the Target Framework setting. Next, you'll need to add some code to your program that you want to inspect. Here, I add code to instantiate a TwitterContext, which is like a LINQ to SQL DataContext, but works with Twitter: var l2tCtx = new TwitterContext(); If you're following along add the code above to the Main method, which will look similar to this: using LinqToTwitter; namespace NuGetInstall { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var l2tCtx = new TwitterContext(); } } } The code above doesn't really do anything, but it does give something that I can show and demonstrate how JustCode decompilation works. Once the code is in place, click on TwitterContext and press the F12 (Go to Definition) key.  As expected, Visual Studio opens a metadata file with prototypes for the TwitterContext class.  Here's the result: Opening a metadata file is the normal way that Visual Studio works when navigating to the definition of a type where you don't have the code.  The scenario with TwitterContext happens because you don't have the source code to the file.  Visual Studio has always done this and you can experiment by selecting any .NET type, i.e. a string type, and observing that Visual Studio opens a metadata file for the .NET String type. The point I'm making here is that JustCode works the way Visual Studio works and you'll see how this can make your job easier. In the previous figure, you only saw prototypes associated with the code. i.e. Notice that the default constructor is empty.  Again, this is normal because Visual Studio doesn't have the ability to decompile code.  However, that's the purpose of this post; showing you how JustCode fills that gap. To decompile code, right click on TwitterContext in the metadata file and select JustCode Navigate -> Decompile from the context menu.  The shortcut keys are Ctrl+1.  After a brief pause, accompanied by a progress window, you'll see the metadata expand into full decompiled code. Notice below how the default constructor now has code as opposed to the empty member prototype in the original metadata: And Why is This So Different? Again, the big deal is that Telerik JustCode decompilation works in harmony with the way that Visual Studio works.  The navigate to functionality already exists and you can use that, along with a simple context menu option (or shortcut key) to transform prototypes into decompiled code. Telerik is filling the the Reflector/Red Gate gap by providing a supported alternative to decompiling code.  Many people, including myself, used Reflector to decompile code when we were stuck with buggy libraries or insufficient documentation.  Now we have an alternative that's officially supported by a company with an excellent track record for customer (developer) service, Telerik.  Not only that, JustCode has several other IDE productivity tools that make the deal even sweeter. • Smartassembly 5: it lives! Early Access builds now available

  I'm pleased to announce that, late last week, we put out the first early access build for Smartassembly 5, Red Gate's fantastic code protection and error reporting tool, which we acquired last September. You can download it via: http://www.red-gate.com/messageboard/viewforum.php?f=116 It's obviously pretty early days, so please do not try to use this to protect a production application, but we've already done a lot of work in some key areas: We're simplifying and streamlining the licensing model (you won't see this yet, but a lot of the work on this has already been done). We've improved usability of the product, with a better menu, reordering of project settings, and better defaults. We've also fixed a load of bugs, which I'll let Alex blog about in more detail. On a slightly more trivial level, the curly braces are also no more. Over the coming weeks, we'll be adding more improvements, and starting usability tests. • Ubuntu 12.10 AMD/Intel Hybrid Graphics not working

  On Ubuntu 12.04 my Sony Vaio VPCSE with Intel® HD Graphics 3000 and AMD Radeon™ HD 6630M worked fine with the Catalyst Control Center version 12.6. Also the switching between integrated and discrete graphic card was working. In both cases, I followed this tutorial. But it is not working on Ubuntu 12.10. I tested the tutorial with the Catalyst Control Center from the Ubuntu Software Center, the version 12.8 and version 12.9. Always the same problem: After installation process I am able to boot in the login-screen. But after entering the password for my username, only the background-image appears. Unity seems not to be starting. I am only able to reach the context-menu by right clicking the mouse button. I also tried his fix, but is also does not work for me. Any ideas what to do to fix this problem?

• Should I provide fallbacks for HTML5/CSS3 elements in a web page at this point?

  I'm wondering if I should bother providing a fallback for HTML5 tags and attributes and CSS3 styling at this point in time. I know that there's probably still a lot of people out there who use older versions of browsers and HTML5/CSS3 are still fairly new. I read this article: Should I use non-standard tags in a HTML page for highlighting words? and one answer mentioned that people kind of "cheat" with older browsers by using the new tags and attributes, but styling them in CSS to ensure they show up right. This question: Relevance of HTML5: Is now the time? was asked about two years ago and I don't know how relevant it is anymore. For example, I want to use the placeholder and required attributes in a web form I'm building and it has no labels to show what each <input> is. How do I handle this, or do I bother?

• How to play .mp4 movies?

  I have a .mp4 movie (it's an .mp4 file, and the "video codec" is Xvid, and the "audio codec" is mp3) that I want to play, but when I try to open it in MPlayer, it says "The steam is encrypted and decryption is not supported." I tried to apply the answer from this question and this wiki page, but neither worked. Any suggestions? The file came from an [apparently] less than reputable site, which I guess I can't link to. :( I've tried: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras sudo apt-get install libdvdread4 sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg sudo apt-get install w64codecs sudo apt-get update

• How to hide bottom panel in GNOME?

  I want to hide bottom panel of Gnome in Ubuntu 10.10 so that I would be able to show it again when I want. In the property menu of the panel there is an option for Autohide but not hide totally. The reason I need it, is because I am using Docky panel and it now it is behind the bottom panel and looks like awful. What I am doing right now is I am deleting it totally by right clicking on the panel. And the only way I know to return it back is executing following command in the terminal. rm -r ~/.gconf/apps/panel Any other solutions?

• How to install an older version of Java

  I updated my installation of the sun-java6-jdk package today to version 6.24-1build0.10.10.1 after being prompted by the update manager. However this now causes some compilation failures so I'd like to revert back to the previous version that I had installed. I've tried using Synaptic but the 'Force Version' menu command is disabled. I've tried the following command to install the previous version sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk=6.22-0ubuntu1~10.10 But I'm not sure that I have the correct version: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Version ‘6.22-0ubuntu1~10.10’ for ‘sun-java6-jdk’ was not found I've taken this version number from this changelog: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sun-java6/+changelog Is this the correct way to install a previous version of a package? Have I got the correct version from the sun-java6 change log?

• Microsoft Forcing Dev/Partners Hands on Win 8 Through Certification

  I remember 2.5 years ago when Microsoft dropped a bomb on the Microsoft Partner community: all Gold competencies would require .NET 4 based premiere certifications (MCPD). Problem was, this gave a window of about 6 months for partners to update their employees’ certifications. At the place I was working, I put together an aggressive plan and we were able to attain the certs needed. Microsoft is always open that the certification requirements will change as the industry changes. .NET 1.0 certifications are useless here in 2012, and rightfully so they’ve been retired for a long time now. But now we’re seeing a new tactic by Microsoft – shifting gears away from certifications that speak to what industry needs and more to the Windows 8 agenda. Consider that currently the premiere development certification is the Microsoft Certified Professional Developer, which comes in three flavours – Web, Windows, and Azure. All require WCF and Data Access exams, as well as one that deals with the associated base technologies (ASP.NET, WinForms/WPF, Azure), and one that ties all three together in a solution-based exam. For Microsoft-based organizations, these skills aren’t just valid but necessary in building Microsoft applications. But the MCPD is being replaced with our old friend Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD). So far, Microsoft has only released two types of MCSD – Web and Windows Store Apps. Windows Store Apps?! In a push to move developers to create WinRT-based applications, desktop development is now considered a second-class citizen in the eyes of Redmond. Also interesting are the language options for the exams: HTML5 and C#. Sorry VB folks, its time to embrace curly braces whether they be JavaScript or C#. Consider too the skills being assessed for the Windows Store Apps: Get your MCSD: Windows Store Apps Using HTML5 Get your MCSD: Windows Store Apps Using C# *Image Source: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/mcsd-windows-store-apps.aspx Nov 21/2012 If you look at the skills being tested in each exam, you’ll find that skills like WCF and Data Access are downplayed compared to things like integrating Charms, facilitating Search, programming for the microphone and camera – all very Windows 8 focussed items. Where this becomes maddening is that Microsoft is still pushing Windows 7 with enterprise clients. According to a ZDNet article, Microsoft wants to see Windows 7 on 70% of enterprise desktops by mid 2013. Assuming they somehow meet that (its a pretty lofty goal), there’s years of traditional desktop-based development that will still be required at some level. For those thinking they’ll just write and stick with the MCPD certification, note that most exams that go towards that certification will be retired at the end of July 2013! (Read the small print). And while details haven’t been finalized, its a safe bet that MCPD certifications eventually won’t count towards Gold-level competencies in the Microsoft Partner program. What this means for Microsoft Partners and Developers is that certification for desktop development is going to be limited to Windows Store Apps unless Microsoft re-introduces a traditional desktop (WPF) based MCSD cert. Web Application Development – It’s Not All Bad There’s big changes on the web side of certification, but I actually see these changes as being for the good! Now I’m sure that these will be slanted towards web development in IE, and I can hear designers everywhere bemoaning the CSS/IE combination. Still, I applaud Microsoft for adopting HTML5 as the go-to web technology and requiring certified developers to prove they have skills in the basics of web dev. The fact that the second exam clearly states “MVC Web Applications” shows that Web Forms is truly legacy and deprecated. That’s not to say there aren’t those out there that are still supporting or (for whatever reason) doing new dev with Web Forms, but this move by Microsoft is telling the community they better get on the MVC bandwagon if they want to stay current. Fantastic! And of course Azure needs to be here as well, and this is where the Microsoft agenda fits in. It’s no secret that there’s been a huge push in getting developers on to Azure. I don’t see this as being a bad thing either, as cloud computing (whether Azure, private, or 3rd party) is a necessary skill for developers to have here in 2012. The cynic in me realizes that the HTML5/JavaScript/CSS push wouldn’t be as prominent though if not for the Windows 8 Store App play, where HTML5 is a first class citizen (and an available language for the MCSD Windows Store App cert). In this case, the desktop developers loss is the web developers gain. Get Ready for Changes In addition to the changes in certifications, the Microsoft Partner competencies are going through changes as well. Web and Software Development are being merged into a single competency, meaning that licenses you would have received from having both as Gold are reduced. Other competencies are either being removed or changed, as are the exam requirements. In the same way that we’re seeing faster release cycles from Microsoft, so too will we see the Microsoft Partner Program and MS Certifications evolve faster than ever before. Many of us got caught in the last wave of changes, but this time we can see the wave coming – and it looks pretty big!
