  I am using the Model-View pattern on a small application I'm writing. Here's the scenario: The model maintains a list of directories from where it can extract the data that it needs. The View has a Configuration or a Setting dialog where the user can modify this list of directories (the dialog has a JList displaying the list in addition to add and remove buttons). I need some advice from the community: The View needs to communicate these changes to the model. I thought first of adding to the model these methods: addDirectory() and removeDirectory(). But I am trying to limit the number of methods (or channels) that the View can use to communicate with and manipulate the model. Is there any good practice for this? Thank you.

• Do people create and use Web Parts connections?

  I've been writing some SharePoint web parts wich connect (as providers and consumers). I've found many difficulties, and (comparatively*) little material from the web, from books, or from microsoft.com, which is quite surprising as Web Parts have been around since 2003. This is making me think that although web part connections look like a first class feature in SharePoint, that in practice few people write connecting web parts, and few SharePoint users use them. Is this the case - that few developers write connecting web parts, and few users use them? *comparitively: A subjective impression. With each specific problem i usually find only a handful of web pages which address it, and as my problems seem to be fundamental ones (such which data type to wrap in an IWebPartRow), I expect a lot more search results.

• Sending mail via sendmail from python

  If I want to send mail not via SMTP, but rather via sendmail, is there a library for python that encapsulates this process? Better yet, is there a good library that abstracts the whole 'sendmail -versus- smtp' choice? I'll be running this script on a bunch of unix hosts, only some of which are listening on localhost:25; a few of these are part of embedded systems and can't be set up to accept SMTP. As part of Good Practice, I'd really like to have the library take care of header injection vulnerabilities itself -- so just dumping a string to popen('/usr/bin/sendmail', 'w') is a little closer to the metal than I'd like. If the answer is 'go write a library,' so be it ;-)

• Is it okay to pass injected EntityManagers to EJB bean's helper classes and use it?

  We have some JavaEE5 stateless EJB bean that passes the injected EntityManager to its helpers. Is this safe? It has worked well until now, but I found out some Oracle document that states its implementation of EntityManager is thread-safe. Now I wonder whether the reason we did not have issues until now, was only because the implementation we were using happened to be thread-safe (we use Oracle). @Stateless class SomeBean { @PersistenceContext private EntityManager em; private SomeHelper helper; @PostConstruct public void init(){ helper = new SomeHelper(em); } @Override public void business(){ helper.doSomethingWithEm(); } } Actually it makes sense.. If EntityManager is thread-unsafe, a container would have to do inercept business() this.em = newEntityManager(); business(); which will not propagate to its helper classes. If so, what is the best practice in this kind of a situation? Passing EntityManagerFactory instead of EntityManager?

But now that I'm working on a project which the main requirement is to use VB.net Express Edition, is it possible to integrate this IDE with NUnit? How can I do that? One table with questions One table with the difficulity of the question One table with the category of the question However, what do I do with the answers? Have them as seperate columns in the question-table? It sounds like a bad practice.(Also, where do I have the correct answer) Each question will have 5 answers where only one of them is correct.

• Where do I put the links to my Javascript/jQuery files in my html file?

  I recently noticed that some (not all) of my javascript and jQuery scripts wouldn't work unless I put the link for the .js files nearer towards the bottom of the page instead of the head area where I put my links for my .css files. From what I understand, javascript can go in either places and it is recommended to not be put in the header as it slows down the page loading process as well. At the same time, if I put it in the body tag of the html file, it looks somewhat messy and was wondering what the best practice is for putting .js files in a cleanly place. Should I always put it at the very bottom right before the ending body tag? How do professional web developers handle this?

• Incorrect emacs indentation in a C++ class with DLL export specification

  I often write classes with a DLL export/import specification, but this seems to confuse emacs' syntax parser. I end up with something like: class myDllSpec Foo { public: Foo( void ); }; Notice that the "public:" access spec is indented incorrectly, as well as everything that follows it. When I ask emacs to describe the syntax at the beginning of the line containing public, I get a return of: ((label 352)) If I remove the myDllSpec, the indentation is correct, and emacs tells me that the syntax there is: ((inclass 352) (access-label 352)) Which seems correct and reasonable. So I conclude that the syntax parser is not able to handle the DLL export spec, and that this is what's causing my indentation trouble. Unfortunately, I don't know how to teach the parser about my labels. Seems that this is pretty common practice, so I'm hoping there's a way around it.

• uitextfield delegate must be file's owner?

  I've seen a few references (eg here) in response to folks having trouble getting the keyboard to dismiss in iPhone that say "double check that the delegate is attached to file's owner. Is this necessarily true? Or just standard practice? Can't I have other objects in my nib, such as a subclass of UIViewController, and make connections to those as I like? I'd hate to have to route everything into the object that happens to be file owner. That said, I'm having a difficult time getting the keyboard to disappear. I know it's connected to the delegate, because I can set break points and step through the code. I can see the [theTextField resignFirstResponder] get called (and return true), but the keyboard still won't go away. Any other suggestions?

  I'm writing a VB.net program for a website that uses the AJAX Lits options http://www.ajaxdaddy.com/demo-dhtml-autocomplete.html Whats more is that the website has used additional arguments in the function that i'm not exactly sure what they are calling, and there a trigger that executes an action that must be click, tabbing and returning fail. Any idea on how to automate this? This website has been a holy terror since it was unleashed on my company.   I just wanted to hear the opinion of Hibernate experts about DB schema generation best practices for Hibernate/JPA based projects. Especially: What strategy to use when the project has just started? Is it recommended to let Hibernate automatically generate the schema in this phase or is it better to create the database tables manually from earliest phases of the project? Pretending that throughout the project the schema was being generated using Hibernate, is it better to disable automatic schema generation and manually create the database schema just before the system is released into production? And after the system has been released into production, what is the best practice for maintaining the entity classes and the DB schema (e.g. adding/renaming/updating columns, renaming tables, etc.)? • Breaking the SQL Compact 8K Limit?

  I am creating a desktop application that stores rich text documents to a SQL Compact database. Documents are converted to a byte array and stored as a Binary column, and I am running into SQL Compact's 8K limit for Binary field length. Is there a simple way to get around the 8K limit? I can come up with lots of complicated ways to do it, such as parsing into 8K chunks for storage and reassembling on fetch. But before I get into something that complex, I would like to make sure I can't solve the problem more simply, such as by changing data type. If there is no simple way of getting around the 8K limit, is thare a best practice for storing documents greater than 8K? Thanks for your help.

• C# String Resource Values as Enum String Part values?

  Using VS2010 and .net V4.0 I would like to achieve the following: I already have 2 resource files in my project for 2 languages - English and Czech. I must say Resource Management in .net is excellent, I am suprised even to get code completion when implementing a String for example: string desc = Strings.ResourceManagerDesc This gets the string associated with the current culture of the thread. Now I am trying to create an Enum that can have the String portion of the Enum interpreted from the Strings resources. In the following way (This code DOES NOT WORK): public enum DownloadStatus { 1 = Strings.DownloadState_Complete, 2 = Strings.DownloadState_Failed, 3 = Strings.DownloadState_InProgress } This is a made up example, but you can see the point here. Since the above code won't work, is there a best practice way to achieve what I want?

• Should I have a separate copy of all CakePHP files for every new application?

  I'm extremely new to CakePHP. From what I've gathered, it seems like I can have multiple applications that all share the same app and cake directories. So, let's say I have two applications. CakeFacebookApp and GenericCakeBlog. These applications are completely separate from each other and will have completely separate URLs, but they will reside on the same webhost. Should they both be within the same cake structure, or should they each have a full cake install in separate directories? Technically, I'm sure it will work either way, but I guess I'm looking for a best practice approach. Thanks.

  Please dont laugh . Over the past 15 years or so I've written all the software that runs my medical practice in D5. Last week when I went to DelphiArea to update a component I got attacked and my disk became unbootable/unrecoverable. I have my original D5p disk and all the components backed up but I want to migrate to W7. I don't care if my delphi apps look like vista/7, I just want to be able to install it and code on the machine again for maintenance purposes. 1) are there any tricks to install D5 so it works in W7? 2) is using a vm program really the only/best way? if so, which is suggested. • What grid distributed computing frameworks are currently favoured for trading systems

  There seems to a quite a few grid computing frameworks out there, but which ones are actually being used to any great extent by the investment banks for purposes of low latency distributing calculation? I'd be interested to hear answers covering both windows,Linux and cross platform. Also, what RPC mechanisms seem to be favoured most? I've heard that for reason of low latency and speed, the calculations themselves are quite often written in C++/C as calculations running on VMs are several orders of magnitude slower than native code. Does this seem to be a common scenario in practice? e.g distributed .NET grid framework running calculations written in native c++/c?

  Hello Experts, Developing using MVC-3, Razor, C# Been searching around and cannot find advice I'm looking for. My site will contain user-uploaded images (possibly a high number). What is the best practice for managing these pictures (placement, breakdown into sub-folders, etc...)? Where do I place them that will prevent them from getting accidentally blown away if I republish my site periodically? If there are any good articles or blog posts, that would be helpful. Here is what is currently on my list: Java Concurrency in Practice by Brian Goetz sed & awk by Dougherty & Robbins (O'Reilly) The Pragmatic Programmer by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas Head First Design Patterns Can anyone suggest anything else? Would especially like something similar to Joel. Something that is a bit edgy but informative. Pragmatic programmer has some key concepts but is a bit dry.

• How do I store in subversion my customizations to a public open source project?

  Hi, I'm working on customizing a couple of open source projects in ways that are very much personalized -- i.e., not appropriate to send the patches back to the maintainers for the public. One of them is stored in CVS, one in SVN. I use SVN for my own work. The CVS project is fine. I check the tree in to my svn repository, including the CVS directories. I can commit all my changes, and still do a cvs update to stay up to date with bug fixes/features of the public project. How should I work on the svn project? Is there a 'best practice' or known procedure for this kind of scenario?

• JTA Transaction: What happens if an exception happens but rollback is not called on the transaction?

  We have some third party code wherein they do the following 1) Create a User Transaction e.g. txn = (UserTransaction)ctx.lookup( "UserTransaction" ); txn.begin( ); 2) Do some work persisting to the database (via JPA) to a MySQL database 3) txn.commit() They have Exception blocks but NONE of them call txn.rollback. Good coding practice says they NEED to call rollback if an exception occurs but my question is If the txn is not commited, and an exception occurs what is the negative effect of them NOT calling rollback?

  I have an abstract class Moveable with the method abstract void move() which is extended by the class Bullet and the abstract class Character, and Character is extended by the class Survivor and the class Zombie. In Survivor and Bullet the move() method doesnt require any parameters while in the class Zombie the move() method depends on the actual position of the survivor. The survivor and multiple zombies are created in the class Gui. I wanted to access the survivor in Zombie - what's the best way of doing this? In Gui i wrote a method getSurvivor() but i don't see how to access this method in Zombie? I am aware that as a workaround i could just pass a [Survivor survivor] as parameter in move() and ignore it in Bullet and Survivor, but that feels so ... bad practice.

• Asynchrous calls cause StaleObjectStateException

  Hi all, I'm struggling with a Grails service. The service gets AJAX calls from the clients and behaves like a simple local cache for remote objects: void **someCallFromClient**() { // extract params def results = remoteService.queryService(params) results.each{ // try to fetch result object from local DB def obj = SomeClass.findBySomeField(result.someField) if (!obj){ obj = new Result(params) obj.save() } // do stuff on obj } } The service works fine when only one client is connected, but as soon as 2 or more clients start bombing the server with requests, I start getting: 2010-05-24 13:09:49,764 [30893094@qtp-26315919-2] ERROR errors.GrailsExceptionResolver - Row was updated or deleted by another transaction (or unsaved-value mapping was incorrect): [ some object #892901] org.hibernate.StaleObjectStateException: Row was updated or deleted by another transaction (or unsaved-value mapping was incorrect): [ some object #892901] // very long stactrace It probably happens when 2 calls are trying to create the same object concurrently. I suppose this is a rather typical situation to end up in. Could you recommend any pattern/good practice to fix this issue? For example, is there a way to say to one of the service instances to hang on and wait for the other to finish its stuff and try again? Cheers!

• Progressbar: Force element.innerHTML update before javascript sort call

  Hi, what is the best practice for this scenario: 1) User clicks "Sort huge javascript array" 2) Browser shows "Sorting..." through element.innerHTML="Sorting" 3) Browser sorts huge javascript array (100% CPU for several seconds) while displaying "Sorting..." message. 4) Browser shows result. Pseudo code: ... <a href="#" onclick="sortHugeArray();return false">Sort huge array</a> ... function sortHugeArray(){ document.getElementById("progress").innerHTML="Sorting..."; ...do huge sort ... ...render result... document.getElementById("progress").innerHTML=result; } When i do that this way, browser never shows "Sorting...", it freezes browser for several seconds and shows result without noticing user...
