• Windows 7 - Remote Desktop - multiple credentials

  Hi, My home network consists of a couple XP machines and a windows 7 box. One of the XP boxes is like a shared server accessed via Remote Desktop. I have an account on there and my gf has another. Previously I was able to save RDC shortcuts to this shared server including credentials. So in order to access the server from a computer on the network, i just needed to open the shortcut. I thus would have two shortcuts, one for my account and one for my gf's. In windows 7, it seems to store credentials for a box based on machine name. i.e. i can only store one set of credentials per machine name. This seems incredibly stupid so my question is: In windows 7, is there some way to have RDC shortcuts that use different credentials to login to the same target box? thanks

  For my .bashrc I have a lot of small snippet files in .config/bash, like 10-prompt.sh and so on. In my actual .bashrc, I just have the following: configdir="$HOME/.config/bash" for file in "$configdir"/*.sh do source "$file" done I'd like to do the same for my .vimrc, but I am not that confident in VimL that I could write that. How would the snippet for .vimrc look like that includes all the snippets in a given subfolder? Ideally, I'd like to make a .vim/rc/ folder where I can put my snippets into.

• IPv6 connections routed to IPv4 device

  I have an IBM 9406-250 with V5R1 and IPv4 only connectivity, and want it to be reachable over IPv6. I cannnot install an IPv6 stack on it, but I want it to be accessible by IPv6 so I can drop the requirement to VPN to my home network. I have an OpenWRT device running, which takes care of the IPv6 routing on my network and the tunnel to SIXXS, and I was wondering if it is possible to assign another IPv6 address to that device, and route it to the IPv4 IBM computer. Which software do I need for this, and how is this technique called?

• Sound card not detected in 13.04

  I have a problem with my sound card. I don't have volume up or down option anywhere. In the setting -> Sound I don't have any card detected. • Run command before and after printing with CUPS?

  Hello, this is a home setup. A central printer server (Linux) manages the queue, a HP 2430DTN is attached to it via 100Mbit/sec Ethernet. The printer is hooked up to a managable power source. A shell script watches the queue on the server (lpstat -o) and turn on the printer when there is a job. If the queue is empty for 10 minutes it turns the printer off. Now this setup messes up, stops the printer etc. after a couple of weeks and is in general "not so reliable". I now know how to change the stop-printer thing, but: Is there a way to run my turn printer on script and turn printer off script directly from cups without watching the queue? That would be so cool!

• My Obligatory IPad Post

  I've had my IPad for about a week now. So I thought I'd write some thoughts down based on my initial experiences. Here are my initial take-aways: 1 - Netflix OnDemand - I'm a movie junkie. I'm now more apt to just start a movie as background sound for my workday (I telecommute - so except for the occasional bark from my dog, it's awfully quiet here if I don't have something going). 2 - The Email Client is really nice and I'm as fast or faster typing when I have the wireless keyboard engaged. Even with onscreen keyboard - I'm already close to 75% of desktop speed 3 - The battery life is incredible - I think this is the first case where a mobile device actually under-promised on battery 4 - It totally has killed the notion of using a normal PC for my wife and mother-in-law - neither of which had wanted an iPhone/iPod Touch or really any Apple device until they got to play with my iPad. The concept of - instant on, easy to hold and touch-based navigation has them hooked. Heck, it has me hooked. My ultimate goal is to be able to have it at least replace the need to take my netbook with me on the road. I haven't had a chance to complete my testing on that front yet - between work, my wife traveling (for a change) and now my wife home sick - I haven't had time to just play with it.   Previously, there was an Internet Time tab on the Date and Time applet of the Control Panel, wherein one could force a query of an internet time server and also type in a different server from the ones supplied. However, this tab has now disappeared, and I need to have it back. I should mention that this machine has never been part of a domain, since it seems that machines that are such do not have such a tab. • Native AAA games coming to Ubuntu. Where they will be installed?

  Many users use SSD disks (and I believe many more in the future) for their OS. 128GB SSD disks are common place nowadays and many users (like me) use their SSD for dual booting (Windows and Ubuntu). Ubuntu installations like this occupies 20-40 GB (/ , /home and swap). Up to now there was no problem. In a few weeks though, triple A games are coming to Ubuntu (i.e. l4d2) that require probably tens of GB for installation. In windows there is no problem, because you can install a game anywhere you want (i.e. I install games in D:/Games/). In Ubuntu, though, programs install files in many places (i.e. /usr/* , /lib, /etc ) so from what I remember, I never had the option to choose where to install a program. So, how will it be possible to install AAA games that require many GBs, when our Ubuntu installations won't have the necessary space? Could a /opt mounted on a mechanical disk (HDD) be the solution? Is it something I am missing?

  Hi, I've just installed Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 in Windows XP SP3 When trying to run MS word or any other office app (Excel, PowerPoint), I get the following message: this application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect This also happens with other applications, for instance, Acrobat Reader. A bit of Googling around this error message suggests that this might be due to a mismatch of library versions. In fact, most of the articles and forum messages I found mention a programmer writing an application in Visual C++ and sending it to someone else, who then runs into that error. This is hardly my case ! I looked into Office's files and the manifest file for Excel suggests that Office is trying to use Microsoft VC80.CRT version 8.0.50608.0. However, in my Windows System folder, I can only find the assemblies for 8.0.50727.762 My next step will be trying to find version 8.0.50608.0. How can I find and download it ?

• Ubuntu 12.04 and Nvidia GTX 550 Ti

  OK I'm currently trying to install Ubuntu x64 Server 12.04 onto the following machine: Intel Core i5-2320 3.0GHz LGA1155 6MB 8 GB DDR3 RAM, Gigabyte Z68P-DS3 S1155 Intel Z68 DDR3 ATX M/B, OCZ 60 GB SSD, 3x Samsung 2TB drives in a RAID 5 array (via M/B) Now what I think is causing the issue is the following: EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 951MHz 1GB PCI-Express HDMI FPB As the server CD works in text mode I haven't had a problem with actually installing Ubuntu. Partioned with: 1GB /boot SSD, 59GB / SSD, 10GB swap RAID5, ~4TB /home RAID5 On a straight boot, you briefly see the GRUB menu, followed by a blank screen. The keyboard and mouse blink as they are initialised but no sign of life from the screen. Followed by a bit of research (otherwise known as google) ... Booted in quiet splash nomodeset Now I have a fully working linux distro at the command prompt. I then proceed to try and update the nvidia drivers with apt-get (after updating repositories etc) and rebooting. Still the same problem. I also tried reinstalling from the CD and installing said drivers in the install process before GRUB was installed, still the same symptoms. Does anybody have any solutions? I'm at my wits end here, I bought this machine to be a linux server / tinkering machine and have just spent 4-5 hours trying to just get a basic install working.

• Grandma's Computer - Can a user that belongs only to the "Users" group in Windows XP install malware, virus or IE addons?

  I am trying to figure out if having a user in the "Users" group will be enough to prevent her from install unwanted software. The things that I don't want the user to be able to install are: virus malware bandoo stuff Internet Explorer Addons To put you in context, I am thinking of my grandma's computer, I want her to be able to read all her email stuff and attachments, but without the hassle of needing to reinstall the whole computer every few months. The computer will run Windows XP, with some free antivirus. It will not be part of any domain. It is just a home computer. Linux, I have tried making her use it, but she was already accustomed to Windows and was not really an option to have her re-learn where was the shutdown button. So, are these considerations enough to prevent her installing unwanted software? What other options come to you mind? Thanks

Toshiba L500-ST2544 Toshiba L505-ES5034 The Common Specification for both of them are as follows - RAM - 4GB DDR3 Memory HDD - 320 GB Processor - Intel® Core™ i3-330M Processor WebCam and Mic - Available HDMI Port - Available Numeric Key Pad - Available Windows 7 (64 bit) Home Premium Now, the only difference between ST2544 and ES5034 is that, the ST2544 has a maximum of 2 slots with 2 GB in each. So, you can have a max of 4 GB RAM in that. The ES5034 can support 8 GB RAM, so, in a couple of years, if I want to add another 4 GB RAM I will be able to do it. The price for ST2544 is USD 629.00 whereas, the price for a ES5034 is USD685. A difference is USD 55.00 (not a major amount, but still something extra). Is it worthwhile going for the ES5034? Which Windows Operating System supports 8 GB of RAM?

• MacBook repeatedly disconnects from Wi-Fi

  I have an early 2008-model MacBook (2.4 GHz). The Wi-Fi router I have at home is a Linksys WRT54GX2 that I have had for a few years. My MacBook has recently started disconnecting from the router every few minutes, which is rather annoying. I can reconnect again without having to restart the router or anything, as it seems that the MacBook is just dropping the connection. I have tried changing the channel on the router, and upgrading the laptop from Leopard to Snow Leopard made no difference either. I'm only about six feet from the Linksys device, so distance isn't an issue. This only happens with the Linksys router, while I can use the local library's open network without any issues.   I want to move my data from dropbox to SpiderOak. I have 3 computers running dropbox. But I have a poor WAN connection with very limited upload bandwidth. So I thought I do as first step install the dropbox client on my server on the internet an download there my data from dropbox. Then after this I upload/backup my data from this server with a broadband connection to SpiderOak. After the backup is completed I setup the sync between my 3 computers so that they will not have to upload the data again. Will this process will work so that I don't have to upload my data again over my WAN connection at home?

• Suspected power supply issue? PC repeatedly whirs for some seconds and then dies.

  I've come home today and switched on the PC I've built a few months ago only for the machine to whir for a few short seconds and then die. It repeats this until I disconnect the power lead. Nothing is output to the screen and this cut out happens very quickly after switching it on. What could this be and how could it be fixed? Is it the power supply? I'm in despair :-( My spec is below, everything is new and was bought and assembled within the last 6months, system has been fantastic until now. • Cannot Boot, How to recover

  Am running 11.10 64-bit with Gnome-shell. Something happened late Friday whereby my machine never gets to the login screen. I do get to an Ubuntu splash logo, after that I get a text screen that it hangs on. The screen is referring to issues with mounting various network resources, including VMWare and also some references to my NAS that are in fstab. If I hit "esc" I can get to the GRUB menu and into recovery console. If I try to do a file system check, I run into a similar error screen that I see when trying to boot normally. A possible clue here is that during my last good session I made some mods to the /etc/hosts file to reference another system which I'm connecting to with Synergy. I don't believe I have hardware issues as I'm able to boot properly with a Live USB and connect to my network/Internet. A few more tidbits. I have regular Dejadups backups on my NAS. I have a good Clonezilla whole drive image which is 4-6 weeks old.. My home is encrypted. I thought I'd try blowing away my hosts file via live USB, but when I mounted the hard drive everything was read-only and I couldn't figure out how to replace it. P.S. I logged in via CLI and modded the host file to remove the entry I'd made, to no avail. System continue to gets stuck on the following: CIFS VFS: default security mechanism requested. The default security mechanism will be upgraded from ntlm to ntlmv2 in kernel version 3.1s Would love some sober advice on how to attack this.

• Running Ubuntu Server from a USB key / thumb drive (being mindful of flash's write limitations)

  Having become disillusioned with hacking Buffalo NAS devices, I've decided to roll my own home server. After some research, I have settled on an HP Proliant Microserver with Ubuntu Server and a ZFS RAID-Z array for data. I settled on this configuration after trying and regretfully rejecting FreeNAS because the Logitech Media Server (LMS) software isn't available on the AMD64 flavour of this platform and because I think Debian/Ubuntu server is a better future-proof platform. I considered Open Media Vault, but concluded that it isn't quite yet ready for my purposes. That said, FreeNAS does include the option to run itself off a 2GB+ flash device like USB key or thumb drive. Apparently FreeNAS is mindful of the write limitations of flash devices and so creates virtual disks for running the OS, writing only the required configuration information back to flash. This would give me an extra data drive slot. Q: Can Ubuntu Server be configured sensibly to run off a flash device such as a USB key/thumb drive? If so, how? The write limitations of flash should be accounted for.

• Free alternatives to vSphere for ESXi (if one exists)

  Dear All, Am feeling a touch confused and overwhemled. From what I gather even though ESXi is free I will only be able to manage my VMs (create or power on etc) for 60 days unless I buy a licence for vSphere. This is somewhat frustrating. As I am looking for a home lab to practice for various certs I was hoping to also practice using vmware stuff to do so. Have I got the wrong end of the stick? Is there a free built in web interface like there was with VMServer or is the only option vSphere (which is massively out of my price range)? Looking forward to your responses and hoping that I have just missed something obvious! Regards Tim

• Aventail VPN connection doesn't work

  I installed the Aventail VPN client on both the Mac and a Windows 7 machine, both on my home network. When I try to connect one or the other (I make sure one is disconnected before connecting through the other machine), I get a connection and view the correct certificate - accept it and Aventail tells me that I am connected. However, accessing any page inside my company's network is only possible on Windows. On the Mac I get this page: It looks like my ISP doesn't know how to redirect me? Maybe something about my DNS being set incorrectly on the Mac? Our helpdesk has been completely useless.

• Ubuntu installed along side Win 8 but not shown in boot

  Actually the question says it all, but let me tell you what I did, so u may find exactly what might have went wrong: I have Win 8 installed on 500 GB HDD. SO I shrunk it four times for: partition 1 - the original partition containing Win 8 sys (118GB) partition 2 - NTFS formatted for my data (188GB) partition 3 - NTFS formatted for my data (100GB) partition 4 - NTFS formatted for Linux distro 1 (I reformatted it to ext4 during Ubuntu installation) (25GB) partition 5 - NTFS formatted for Linux distro 1 (21GB) So now I booted Ubuntu from USB (created from ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso) and deleted last two partitions 4 and 5 to create: partition 1 - ext4 where I installed Ubuntu (25GB) partition 2 - Swap (4GB) partition 3 - unallocated space, not formatted yet (17GB) Ubuntu installation said it installed successfully and that I have to restart to boot in Ubuntu. But when I restart Windows 8 auto booted - there was no dual boot. Removed all unnecessary files from server. Home directory Cleanup. But Still I am not getting enough space. This Instance type is m1.large with 8GB EBS. Now i am getting i have enough disk space in /dev/xvdb. Is there a way i can allocate some diskspace to / from /dev/xvdb or Any other Ways. Please suggest me the possible solution for this.Is it possible to use the same /dev/xvdb partition with another instance.

• Windows 7 wifi reports "no network access" and "no internet access" but connects in fedora

  I am running windows 7 home basic (64bit) on a Acer 5742G laptop with Atheos wifi adapter in it. Yesterday, I hiberneted my computer as I always do and up untill then the wifi was working fine. When I booted my computer up again today I started having a strange problem: It detects my wifi but after connecting to it, it keeps on oscillating between states of no network access and no internet access. I can't connect to anything (the internet or my router). I tried to reset my internet protocol stack using this fixit file. I also tried to uninstall and reinstall my network driver. Neither helped. I am using the same laptop's fedora installation right now and the wifi is working perfectly fine. Please help. Edit To add additional details, I have Microsoft Security essentials as my antivirus software and I haven't messed with the firewall or the router configurations.
