• Problems with IRQs when connecting two digium card in and asterisk box

  I have two Digium Wildcard TDM800P with 8 FXO ports each. When I connect both at the same time IRQ misses start showing up making my computer unresponsive and unusable. One card works fine but I need all 16 FXO ports to work to receive calls from my Telco. Is there a way for the cards to communicate with each other so they don't generate as many interrupts. Or a way to tweak Linux to dedicate separate IRQ's for each card. I have tried disabling Audio, ACPI and USB ports. Still too many IRQ misses.

• ssh via putty using hostname in opensuse

  Hi All, I am using opensuse 11.3 and it is connected to DHCP network. I am using putty to connect top machine from window with command: putty -ssh user@ip-address (it works fine) but when trying to connect using hostname it fails to resolve: putty -ssh user@ Every time I want to connect to machine i need to check its ip first and then connect via putty, but when want to connect using hostname it fails and says not able to resolve. Is there a way around so that i can use a common hostname for Linux machine without worrying about its IP address which changes after every reboot? Thanks for reply. Regards, Ashutosh

• Examining C/C++ Heap memory statistics in gdb

  I'm trying to investigate the state of the C/C++ heap from within gdb on Linux amd64, is there a nice way to do this? One approach I've tried is to "call mallinfo()" but unfortunately I can't then extract the values I want since gdb deal with the return value properly. I'm not easily able to write a function to be compiled into the binary for the process I am attached to, so I can simply implement my own function to extract the values by calling mallinfo() in my own code this way. Is there perhaps a clever trick that will allow me to do this on-the-fly? Another option could be to locate the heap and traverse the malloc headers / free list; I'd appreciate any pointers to where I could start in finding the location and layout of these. I've been trying to Google and read around the problem for about 2 hours and I've learnt some fascinating stuff but still not found what I need.

• Monitoring an audio line.

  I need to monitor my audio line-in in linux, and in the event that audio is played, the sound must be recorded and saved to a file. Similiar to how motion monitors the video feed. • Conditional Batch file renaming with mysql data

  Hello, I wonder if anyone knows how could I rename multiple files, all of them originally named with same structure, and add some data extracted from a mysql DB according to specifics rules. For example I have 500 files named with this vars: ID NAME ADDRESS PHONE.wav = 1234567 PAULSIMON WESTDR122 9942213456.wav Now I need to rename files taking some data from the databases for each file, and append the data from a query appended to the filename. For example add the data resulting from a query Where some conditions match, and the data to build the query is taked from original file name, as ID or NAME. i other words, lets say that I want to build a query taking ID & NAME from file 1234567 PAULSIMON WESTDR123 9942213456.wav as WHERE statements to take another value as BirthDATE and add this to new filename, so final result should be: ID NAME ADDRESS PHONE BIRTHDATE.wav I will appreciate any help on this. I need this to be done on a LINUX server.

• Foraward SNMP requests from Agentx Master to Agentx Subagent

  I am running an agentx master and an agentx subagent on linux. When I run snmpget on a default MIB i.e. sysdescr.0 it returns fine, but when I request for a MIB that was registered through the agentx subagent it timesout. It appears that the master receives the GET request but does not forward on to the agentx subagent. The MIB is registered successfully but when master agentx receives the GET request it saying "Sending 60 bytes to UDP: unknown". It can't find the location to forward to. Am I missing a configuration of some sort on the subagent side? How does the master know who is suppose to receive the requests?

  Hi all, I want to add debug message in kmalloc function in linux kernel. So my goal is to print all functions that call kmalloc. I tried to add printk("caller : %s size : %d",FUNCTION, size); in kmalloc function in slab.h but, the result of FUNCTION is kmalloc itself. I realised that MACRO is processed first before inline function (fyi, kmalloc is an inline function). Now, my question is, what is the simplest way to add debug message to kmalloc? • How to make a daemon which will accept arbitrary commands

  Right now the program can be launched in a linux terminal. Once running you can type various commands and the program will do stuff on the machine until the user quits. I would like to make the program into a service that the user runs and it goes to the background. Then the user should be able to make commands to it. Like start and stop, and write something to a log and whatever else my program does. Note that I need to send it arbitrary commands that my program will handle, not just start and stop. Maybe this means it is no longer a daemon - I dont know. How do I do this? Also, if this is not too hard, I would like to be able to run multiple instances of this service. But it is not essential.

• C++ build systems

  I will start a new C++ project (it may have some C components as well) soon and I am looking for a modern, industrial-strength (i.e. non-beta) build system. The software will be created by several developers in 3-5 years and will run on Linux (Mac OS X and Windows might be supported later). I am looking for something that has better comprehensibility, ease-of-use and maintainability than e.g. make but is still powerful enough to handle a complex project. Open source software is preferred. I started looking into Boost.Build, CMake, Maven and SCons so far and liked features and concepts of all of those, but I'm lacking the experience to make a decision for a large project.

• Error in eclipse: "The project cannot be built until build path errors are resolved"

  I am a CS student learning java so I do some work at home and at college on a mixture of linux and windows. I have a problem after copying a new project into the eclipse workspace. The project shows up but with a red exclamation mark and an error saying: "The project cannot be built until build path errors are resolved" Can somebody help me out with this? • Drupal does not recognize my website has been installed

  After a successful Drupal install, I was trying to follow the security recommendations and reverted the settings.php file to 444 permissions (read, read, read). Then, all of a sudden, right after doing that, Drupal does not recognize the installation process was completed. It went back to the install screen. Worst of all. I did chmod back to 666 (write, write, write) but it does not work any more. When I move forward as if I was going to install Drupal again, he tells me he does not have permissions to create the files folder under sites/default... But since the installation has already been completed... the files folder is already there... I am puzzled... Could it be some sort of server caching? Since this is one of my first adventures with a Linux server, I am a bit confused. Any help appreciated... Thanks.

• Programmatically dial a series of numbers on a modem?

  At work, we just got a large number exotic cellular devices that need to be programmed. To do this, you plug in a standard home telephone and dial a series of numbers, with pauses between them. To me, this is a task that begs to be automated, and we've got one Linux desktop (a test Asterisk machine) with a modem on it. Does anybody know an easy way to approach this task? I could install Ruby or Python on that desktop. I also know PHP, but I'm not sure how to run it outside of a server setup, and it seems silly to install Apache for this.

  What is the simplest/best way to ensure only 1 copy of given script is running - assuming it's bash on linux? At the moment I'm doing: ps -C script.name.sh > /dev/null 2>&1 || ./script.name.sh but it has several issues: it puts the check outside of script it doesn't let me run the same script from separate accounts - which I would like sometimes. -C checks only first 14 characters of process name Of course I can write my own pidfile handling, but I sense that there should be some simple way to do it.

• How can I find out the original username a process was started with?

  There is a perl script that needs to run as root but the we must make sure the user who runs the script did not log-in originally as user foo as it will be removed during the script. So how can I find out if the user, who might have su-ed several times since she logged in has not impersonated 'foo' at any time in that chain? I found an interesting perl script that was calling the following two shell scripts, but I think that would only work on Solaris. my $shell_paren = `ps -ef | grep -v grep | awk \'{print \$2\" \"\$3}\' | egrep \"^@_\" | awk \'{print \$2}'`; my $parent_owner = `ps -ef | grep -v grep | awk \'{print \$1\" \"\$2}\' | grep @_ | awk \'{print \$1}\'`; This needs to work on both Linux and Solaris and I'd rather eliminate the repeated calls to he the shell and keep the whole thing in Perl.

• Get local network interface addresses using only proc?

  How can I obtain the (IPv4) addresses for all network interfaces using only proc? After some extensive investigation I've discovered the following: ifconfig makes use of SIOCGIFADDR, which requires open sockets and advance knowledge of all the interface names. It also isn't documented in any manual pages on Linux. proc contains /proc/net/dev, but this is a list of interface statistics. proc contains /proc/net/if_inet6, which is exactly what I need but for IPv6. Generally interfaces are easy to find in proc, but actual addresses are very rarely used except where explicitly part of some connection. There's a system call called getifaddrs, which is very much a "magical" function you'd expect to see in Windows. It's also implemented on BSD. However it's not very text-oriented, which makes it difficult to use from non-C languages.

• What is sys/user.h used for ?

  I was inspecting the code of a linux application and i saw the #include in one of the code files. I tried looking it up on opengroup.org but i couldn't find it there, this is what the sys directory looks like: http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/000095399/basedefs/sys/ . I guess it's not standard header file, but i checked it in my /usr/include/sys and it was there. What does it do and what it is used for ?   I'm porting a linux kernel module. It used to create a device file for itself (using dirty hacks with syscalls from kernelspace), but now I want to do this in udev. Where can I find documentation on supporting udev in in kernel module? Note that module itself is not a device driver. It serves as a multiplexor for a set of drivers. Therefor default ways of registering devices (i.e. pci ones) are not suitable for my task.

• An MP3 parser to extract numbered frames?

  I am writing a streaming application for MP3 (CBR). It is all passthru, meaning I don't have to decode/encode, I just need to pass on the data as I see it come through. I want to be able to count the MP3 frames as they passthru (and some other stuff like throughput calculations). According to the MP3 frame header spec, the sync word appears to be 11 bits of 1s, however I notice (naturally) that the frame payload which I should safely assume to be binary and thus it is not odd at all to see 11 1s in sequence. My questions: Is there a Unix/Linux MP3 parser utility (dd-style) that can pull numbered frames from an MP3 file/pipe? Any perl wisdom here? How does one delineate an MP3 header block from any other binary payload data? and lastly: Is a constant bitrate (CBR) MP3 defined by payload bytes or are the header bytes included in the aggregate # of bytes/bits per any given timeslice? • How can I concatenate two mp3 files with different bit rates

  I have FFmpeg installed on my linux web server. When I execute the following code, I have intermittent results. I think I have figured out that the MP3s do not compile when they have different bitrates. exec ('cat '. $pair['source_file'] . ' ' . $pair['translated_word_file'] . '>' . $temp_mp3); I might have found some articles online that reference taking them apart and then bundling them back together at a consistent bitrates. I have confirmed that this won't really work with basic "cat" function and that "sox" can be used IF they have the same sample rate. The issue now becomes "What is the best way to get them to the same sample rate?"

• What are the main reasons against the Windows Registry?

  If i want to develop a registry-like System for Linux, which Windows Registry design failures should i avoid? Which features would be absolutely necessary? What are the main concerns (security, ease-of-configuration, ...)? I think the Windows Registry was not a bad idea, just the implementation didn't fullfill the promises. A common place for configurations including for example apache config, database config or mail server config wouldn't be a bad idea and might improve maintainability, especially if it has options for (protected) remote access. I once worked on a kernel based solution but stopped because others said that registries are useless (because the windows registry is)... what do you think?

Is it possible for the client to read the TCP sequence number of the packet which will carry m, before sending m? In fact, I'd like to append this sequence number to m, and send the resulting packet. (Well, things are more complicated, but let's keep it that simple. In fact, I'd like to apply authentication info to this sequence number, and then append it to m.) • Plot multiple files

  Hi I'd like to make an animation that illustrates the positions of some agents I'm simulating under Linux. Basically, I have some files named file00001.dat, file00002.dat and so on. I have to generate "something" that get files in order, and output an animated gif, a dynamic graph or whatever, that simulates the moving reading data from file. I have control on the files, meaning that I can put identifiers or everything I want. How would you achieve that? What programs would you use?
