• Minimum-Waste Print Job Grouping Algorithm?

  I work at a publishing house and I am setting up one of our presses for "ganging", in other words, printing multiple jobs simultaneously. Given that different print jobs can have different quantities, and anywhere from 1 to 20 jobs might need to be considered at a time, the problem would be to determine which jobs to group together to minimize waste (waste coming from over-printing on smaller-quantity jobs in a given set, that is). Given the following stable data: All jobs are equal in terms of spatial size--placement on paper doesn't come into consideration. There are three "lanes", meaning that three jobs can be printed simultaneously. Ideally, each lane has one job. Part of the problem is minimizing how many lanes each job is run on. If necessary, one job could be run on two lanes, with a second job on the third lane. The "grouping" waste from a given set of jobs (let's say the quantities of them are x, y and z) would be the highest number minus the two lower numbers. So if x is the higher number, the grouping waste would be (x - y) + (x - z). Otherwise stated, waste is produced by printing job Y and Z (in excess of their quantities) up to the quantity of X. The grouping waste would be a qualifier for the given set, meaning it could not exceed a certain quantity or the job would simply be printed alone. So the question is stated: how to determine which sets of jobs are grouped together, out of any given number of jobs, based on the qualifiers of 1) Three similar quantities OR 2) Two quantities where one is approximately double the other, AND with the aim of minimal total grouping waste across the various sets. (Edit) Quantity Information: Typical job quantities can be from 150 to 350 on foreign languages, or 500 to 1000 on English print runs. This data can be used to set up some scenarios for an algorithm. For example, let's say you had 5 jobs: 1000, 500, 500, 450, 250 By looking at it, I can see a couple of answers. Obviously (1000/500/500) is not efficient as you'll have a grouping waste of 1000. (500/500/450) is better as you'll have a waste of 50, but then you run (1000) and (250) alone. But you could also run (1000/500) with 1000 on two lanes, (500/250) with 500 on two lanes and then (450) alone. In terms of trade-offs for lane minimization vs. wastage, we could say that any grouping waste over 200 is excessive. (End Edit) ...Needless to say, quite a problem. (For me.) I am a moderately skilled programmer but I do not have much familiarity with algorithms and I am not fully studied in the mathematics of the area. I'm I/P writing a sort of brute-force program that simply tries all options, neglecting any option tree that seems to have excessive grouping waste. However, I can't help but hope there's an easier and more efficient method. I've looked at various websites trying to find out more about algorithms in general and have been slogging my way through the symbology, but it's slow going. Unfortunately, Wikipedia's articles on the subject are very cross-dependent and it's difficult to find an "in". The only thing I've been able to really find would seem to be a definition of the rough type of algorithm I need: "Exclusive Distance Clustering", one-dimensionally speaking. I did look at what seems to be the popularly referred-to algorithm on this site, the Bin Packing one, but I was unable to see exactly how it would work with my problem. Any help is appreciated. :)

  This is relatively a long code,if you have the tolerance and the will to find out how to make this code work then take a look please, i will appreciate your feed back. i have spent two days trying to come up with a code to represent a graph , then calculate the shortest path using dijkastra algorithm , but i am not able to get the right result , even the code runs without errors , but the result is not correct , always i am getting 0. briefly,i have three classes , Vertex, Edge, Graph , the Vertex class represents the nodes in the graph and it has id and carried ( which carry the weight of the links connected to it while using dijkastra algorithm ) and a vector of the ids belong to other nodes the path will go through before arriving to the node itself , this vector is named previous_nodes. the Edge class represents the edges in the graph it has two vertices ( one in each side ) and a wight ( the distance between the two vertices ). the Graph class represents the graph , it has two vectors one is the vertices included in this graph , and the other is the edges included in the graph. inside the class Graph there is a method its name shortest takes the sources node id and the destination and calculates the shortest path using dijkastra algorithm, and i think that it is the most important part of the code. my theory about the code is that i will create two vectors one for the vertices in the graph i will name it vertices and another vector its name is ver_out it will include the vertices out of calculation in the graph, also i will have two vectors of type Edge , one its name edges for all the edges in the graph and the other its name is track to contain temporarily the edges linked to the temporarily source node in every round , after the calculation of every round the vector track will be cleared. in main() i created five vertices and 10 edges to simulate a graph , the result of the shortest path supposedly to be 4 , but i am always getting 0 , that means i am having something wrong in my code , so if you are interesting in helping me find my mistake and how to make the code work , please take a look. the way shortest work is as follow at the beginning all the edges will be included in the vector edges , we select the edges related to the source and put them in the vector track , then we iterate through track and add the wight of every edge to the vertex (node ) related to it ( not the source vertex ) , then after we clear track and remove the source vertex from the vector vertices and select a new source , and start over again select the edges related to the new source , put them in track , iterate over edges in tack , adding the weights to the corresponding vertices then remove this vertex from the vector vertices, and clear track , and select a new source , and so on . here is the code. #include<iostream> #include<vector> #include <stdlib.h> // for rand() using namespace std; • Scrolling a canvas as a shape you're moving approaches its edges

  Hi, I develop a Python-based drawing program, Whyteboard. I have tools that the user can create new shapes on the canvas, such as text/images/rectangles/circles/polygons. I also have a Select tool that allows the users to modify these shapes - for example, moving a shape's position, resizing, or editing polygon's points' positions. I'm adding in a new feature where moving or resizing a point near the canvas edge will automatically scroll the canvas. I think it's a good idea in terms of program usability, and annoys me when other program's don't have this feature. I've made some good progress on coding this; below is some Python code to demonstrate what I'm doing. If we're moving a shape, then we need to know its edges to calculate when they're coming close to the canvas edge. If we're resizing just a single point, then we just use the x/y coords of that point to see if it's close to the edge. The problem I'm having is a little tricky to describe - basically, if you move a shape to the left, and stop moving it, if you positioned the shape within the 50px from the canvas, then the next time you go to move the shape, the code that says "ok, is this shape close to the end?" gets triggered, and the canvas scrolls to the left, even if you're moving the shape to the right. Can anyone think on how to stop this? I created a youtube video to demonstrate the issue. At about 0:54, I move a polygon to the left of the canvas and position it there. The next time I move it, the canvas scrolls to the left even though I'm moving it right Another thing I'd like to add, but I'm stuck on is the scroll gaining momentum the longer a shape is scrolling? So, with a large canvas, you're not moving a shape for ages, moving 5px at a time, when you need to cover a 2000px distance. Any suggestions there? Thanks all - sorry for the super long question!

In this post we will take three simple use cases and see how those basic components come together to create a complete SDN solution in OpenStack. With those three use cases we will review almost the entire network setup and see how all the pieces work together. The use cases we will use are: 1.       Create network – what happens when we create network and how can we create multiple isolated networks 2.       Launch a VM – once we have networks we can launch VMs and connect them to networks. 3.       DHCP request from a VM – OpenStack can automatically assign IP addresses to VMs. This is done through local DHCP service controlled by OpenStack Neutron. We will see how this service runs and how does a DHCP request and response look like. In this post we will show connectivity, we will see how packets get from point A to point B. We first focus on how a configured deployment looks like and only later we will discuss how and when the configuration is created. Personally I found it very valuable to see the actual interfaces and how they connect to each other through examples and hands on experiments. After the end game is clear and we know how the connectivity works, in a later post, we will take a step back and explain how Neutron configures the components to be able to provide such connectivity.  We are going to get pretty technical shortly and I recommend trying these examples on your own deployment or using the Oracle OpenStack Tech Preview. Understanding these three use cases thoroughly and how to look at them will be very helpful when trying to debug a deployment in case something does not work. Use case #1: Create Network Create network is a simple operation it can be performed from the GUI or command line. When we create a network in OpenStack the network is only available to the tenant who created it or it could be defined as “shared” and then it can be used by all tenants. A network can have multiple subnets but for this demonstration purpose and for simplicity we will assume that each network has exactly one subnet. In the previous post we explained how to check the veth connectivity using the ethtool command. This means that the network which we have just created has created a namespace which is connected to the physical interface eth2. eth2 is the “VM network” the physical interface where all the virtual machines connect to where all the VMs are connected. About network isolation: OpenStack supports creation of multiple isolated networks and can use several mechanisms to isolate the networks from one another. The isolation mechanism can be VLANs, VxLANs or GRE tunnels, this is configured as part of the initial setup in our deployment we use VLANs. When using VLAN tagging as an isolation mechanism a VLAN tag is allocated by Neutron from a pre-defined VLAN tags pool and assigned to the newly created network. By provisioning VLAN tags to the networks Neutron allows creation of multiple isolated networks on the same physical link.  The big difference between this and other platforms is that the user does not have to deal with allocating and managing VLANs to networks. The VLAN allocation and provisioning is handled by Neutron which keeps track of the VLAN tags, and responsible for allocating and reclaiming VLAN tags. In the example above net1 has the VLAN tag 1000, this means that whenever a VM is created and connected to this network the packets from that VM will have to be tagged with VLAN tag 1000 to go on this particular network. This is true for namespace as well, if we would like to connect a namespace to a particular network we have to make sure that the packets to and from the namespace are correctly tagged when they reach the VM network. In the example above we see that the namespace interface “tap26c9b807-7c” has vlan tag 1 assigned to it, if we examine OVS we see that it has flows which modify VLAN tag 1 to VLAN tag 1000 when a packet goes to the VM network on eth2 and vice versa. OVS also takes care of tagging the packets from the namespace to the VM network with the correct VLAN tag and knows to modify the VLAN for packets coming from VM network to the namespace. Now let’s see what happens when a VM is launched and how it is connected to the “VM network”. Let’s trace the connectivity from the VM to VM network on eth2 starting with the VM definition file. The configuration files of the VM including the virtual disk(s), in case of ephemeral storage, are stored on the compute node at/var/lib/nova/instances/<instance-id>/. The whole flow end to end looks like this: VM è tap53903a95-82 (virtual interface)è qbr53903a95-82 (Linux bridge) è qvb53903a95-82 (interface connected from Linux bridge to OVS bridge br-int) è int-br-eth2 (veth one end) è phy-br-eth2 (veth the other end) è eth2 physical interface. The purpose of the Linux Bridge connecting to the VM is to allow security group enforcement with iptables. Security groups are enforced at the edge point which are the interface of the VM, since iptables nnot be applied to OVS bridges we use Linux bridge to apply them. In the future we hope to see this Linux Bridge going away rules.  VLAN tags: As we discussed in the first use case net1 is using VLAN tag 1000, looking at OVS above we see that qvo41f1ebcf-7c is tagged with VLAN tag 3. The modification from VLAN tag 3 to 1000 as we go to the physical network is done by OVS  as part of the packet flow of br-eth2 in the same way we showed before. To summarize, when a VM is launched it is connected to the VM network through a chain of elements as described here. During the packet from VM to the network and back the VLAN tag is modified. Use case #3: Serving a DHCP request coming from the virtual machine In the previous use cases we have shown that both the namespace called dhcp-<some id> and the VM end up connecting to the physical interface eth2  on their respective nodes, both will tag their packets with VLAN tag 1000.We saw that the namespace has an interface with IP of 10.10.10.3. Since the VM and the namespace are connected to each other and have interfaces on the same subnet they can ping each other, in this picture we see a ping from the VM which was assigned 10.10.10.2 to the namespace: The fact that they are connected and can ping each other can become very handy when something doesn’t work right and we need to isolate the problem. In such case knowing that we should be able to ping from the VM to the namespace and back can be used to trace the disconnect using tcpdump or other monitoring tools. To serve DHCP requests coming from VMs on the network Neutron uses a Linux tool called “dnsmasq”,this is a lightweight DNS and DHCP service you can read more about it here. If we look at the dnsmasq on the control node with the ps command we see this: dnsmasq --no-hosts --no-resolv --strict-order --bind-interfaces --interface=tap26c9b807-7c --except-interface=lo --pid-file=/var/lib/neutron/dhcp/5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c/pid --dhcp-hostsfile=/var/lib/neutron/dhcp/5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c/host --dhcp-optsfile=/var/lib/neutron/dhcp/5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c/opts --leasefile-ro --dhcp-range=tag0,10.10.10.0,static,120s --dhcp-lease-max=256 --conf-file= --domain=openstacklocal The service connects to the tap interface in the namespace (“--interface=tap26c9b807-7c”), If we look at the hosts file we see this: # cat  /var/lib/neutron/dhcp/5f833617-6179-4797-b7c0-7d420d84040c/host fa:16:3e:fe:c7:87,host-10-10-10-2.openstacklocal,10.10.10.2   If you look at the console output above you can see the MAC address fa:16:3e:fe:c7:87 which is the VM MAC. Neutron also configures dnsmasq with the combination of MAC and IP so when a DHCP request comes along it will receive the assigned IP. Summary In this post we relied on the components described in the previous post and saw how network connectivity is achieved using three simple use cases. These use cases gave a good view of the entire network stack and helped understand how an end to end connection is being made between a VM on a compute node and the DHCP namespace on the control node. One conclusion we can draw from what we saw here is that if we launch a VM and it is able to perform a DHCP request and receive a correct IP then there is reason to believe that the network is working as expected. We saw that a packet has to travel through a long list of components before reaching its destination and if it has done so successfully this means that many components are functioning properly. In the next post we will look at some more sophisticated services Neutron supports and see how they work. We will see that while there are some more components involved for the most part the concepts are the same. @RonenKofman

• Evaluating code for a graph [migrated]

  This is relatively long code. Please take a look at this code if you are still willing to do so. I will appreciate your feedback. I have spent two days trying to come up with code to represent a graph, calculating the shortest path using Dijkstra's algorithm. But I am not able to get the right result, even though the code runs without errors. The result is not correct and I am always getting 0. I have three classes: Vertex, Edge, and Graph. The Vertex class represents the nodes in the graph and it has id and carried (which carry the weight of the links connected to it while using Dijkstra's algorithm) and a vector of the ids belong to other nodes the path will go through before arriving to the node itself. This vector is named previous_nodes. The Edge class represents the edges in the graph and has two vertices (one in each side) and a width (the distance between the two vertices). The Graph class represents the graph. It has two vectors, where one is the vertices included in this graph, and the other is the edges included in the graph. Inside the class Graph, there is a method named shortest() that takes the sources node id and the destination and calculates the shortest path using Dijkstra's algorithm. I think that it is the most important part of the code. My theory about the code is that I will create two vectors, one for the vertices in the graph named vertices, and another vector named ver_out (it will include the vertices out of calculation in the graph). I will also have two vectors of type Edge, where one is named edges (for all the edges in the graph), and the other is named track (to temporarily contain the edges linked to the temporary source node in every round). After the calculation of every round, the vector track will be cleared. In main(), I've created five vertices and 10 edges to simulate a graph. The result of the shortest path supposedly is 4, but I am always getting 0. That means I have something wrong in my code. If you are interesting in helping me find my mistake and making the code work, please take a look. The way shortest work is as follow: at the beginning, all the edges will be included in the vector edges. We select the edges related to the source and put them in the vector track, then we iterate through track and add the width of every edge to the vertex (node) related to it (not the source vertex). After that, we clear track and remove the source vertex from the vector vertices and select a new source. Then we start over again and select the edges related to the new source, put them in track, iterate over edges in track, adding the weights to the corresponding vertices, then remove this vertex from the vector vertices.
