  • Are these 2 sql queries equivalent in all respects (e.g. estimated and actual execution plan)?

    - by Xerion
    Are query 1) == 2) in terms of estimated query plan AND actual plan? (can statistics affect the actual plan here, ever?) declare @cat int -- input param from prc ... 1) select * from A as a join B as b on b.id = a.id on b.cat = @cat join C as c on c.fid = b.fid on c.cat = @cat where a.cat = @cat 2) select * from A as a join B as b on b.id = a.id on b.cat = a.cat join C as c on c.fid = b.fid on c.cat = b.cat where a.cat = @cat It seems to me that these should logically be equivalent and the execution plan should always be the same regardless of actual difference in tables. And adding more conditions either in join, or where, or add more tables to join shouldn't change this. Are there cases this is not true?

  • Why did the following linq to sql query generate a subquery?

    - by Xaisoft
    I did the following query: var list = from book in books where book.price > 50 select book; list = list.Take(50); I would expect the above to generate something like: SELECT top 50 id, title, price, author FROM Books WHERE price > 50 but it generates: SELECT [Limit1].[C1] as [C1] [Limit1].[id] as [Id], [Limit1].[title] as [title], [Limit1].[price] as [price], [Limit1].[author] FROM (SELECT TOP (50) [Extent1].[id] as as [Id], [Extent1].[title] as [title], [Extent1].[price] as [price], [Extent1].[author] as [author] FROM Books as [Extent1] WHERE [Extent1].[price] > 50 ) AS [Limit1] Why does the above linq query generate a subquery and where does the C1 come from?

  • Read and write .NET Objects in SQL Database without serialization.

    - by Mohit
    Hello, I have a small query. I need to create a Caching Service of my own that will write and read .NET Objects to and from the Database. Now, I have achieved that with the help of Binary Serialization. But the Problem is I need to deliberately marked my objects as [Serializable], which makes me think that what if someone will try to add an object which is not marked as [Serializable]. Thus, I need to find a way to read and write Objects to Database without Serialization. I have one thought too.. As we all know Session can store any object in it. Now, we can make sessions to be stored in the DB, outproc. What mechanism it uses to store these objects without serializing or deserializing. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks. M.B

  • Can you use the same Enum in multiple entities in Linq-to-SQL?

    - by Mark
    In my persistence layer, I've declared a load of Enums to represent tables containing reference data (i.e. data never changes). In Linq2SQL, I am able to set the type of an entity property to an enum type and all is well, but as soon as I set a second entity's property to use the same enum type, the Code Generator (MSLinqToSQLGenerator) start generating an empty code file. I assume that MSLinqToSQLGenerator is quietly crashing. The question is why, and are there any work-arounds? Anyone else experienced this problem?

  • Oracle SQL: Multiple Subqueries Unioned Without Running Original Query Multiple Times.

    - by Bob
    So I've got a very large database, and need to work on a subset ~1% of the data to dump into an excel spreadsheet to make a graph. Ideally, I could select out the subset of data and then run multiple select queries on that, which are then UNION'ed together. Is this even possible? I can't seem to find anyone else trying to do this and would improve the performance of my current query quite a bit. Right now I have something like this: SELECT ( SELECT ( SELECT( long list of requirements ) UNION SELECT( slightly different long list of requirements ) ) ) and it would be nice if i could group the commonalities of the two long requirements and have simple differences between the two select statements being unioned.

  • Is it a problem if i query again and again to SQL Server 2005 and 2000?

    - by learner
    Window app i am constructing is for very low end machines (Celeron with max 128 RAM). From the following two approaches which one is the best (I don't want that application becomes memory hog for low end machines):- Approach One:- Query the database Select GUID from Table1 where DateTime <= @givendate which is returning me more than 300 thousands records (but only one field i.e. GUID - 300 thousands GUIDs). Now running a loop to achieve next process of this software based on GUID. Second Approach:- Query the database Select Top 1 GUID from Table1 where DateTime <= @givendate with top 1 again and again until all 300 thousands records done. It will return me only one GUID at a time, and I can do my next step of operation. What do you suggest which approach will use the less Memory Resources?? (Speed / performance is not the issue here).

  • Java if/else behaving strangely

    - by Alex
    I'm a real newbie to java, so please excuse me if this is a hopelessly straightforward problem. I have the following from my java game server: // Get input from the client DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream (server.getInputStream()); PrintStream out = new PrintStream(server.getOutputStream()); disconnect=false; while((line = in.readLine().trim()) != null && !line.equals(".") && !line.equals("") && !disconnect) { System.out.println("Received "+line); if(line.equals("h")){ out.println("h"+EOF); // Client handshake System.out.println("Matched 1"); }else if (line.equals("<policy-file-request/>")) { out.println("..."+EOF); // Policy file System.out.println(server.getInetAddress()+": Policy Request"); disconnect=true; System.out.println("Matched 2"); }else if(line.substring(0,3).equals("GET")||line.substring(0,4).equals("POST")){ out.println("HTTP/1.0 200 OK\nServer: VirtuaRoom v0.9\nContent-Type: text/html\n\n..."); // HTML status page disconnect=true; System.out.println("Matched 3"); } else { System.out.println(server.getInetAddress()+": Unknown command, client disconnected."); disconnect=true; System.out.println("Matched else"); } } server.close(); First of all, the client sends an "h" packet, and expects the same back (handshake). However, I want it to disconnect the client when an unrecognised packet is received. For some reason, it responds fine to the handshake and HTML status request, but the else clause is never executed when there's an unknown packet. Thanks

  • Optimizing PHP code (trying to determine min/max/between case)

    - by Swizzh
    I know this code-bit does not conform very much to best coding practices, and was looking to improve it, any ideas? if ($query['date_min'] != _get_date_today()) $mode_min = true; if ($query['date_max'] != _get_date_today()) $mode_max = true; if ($mode_max && $mode_min) $mode = "between"; elseif ($mode_max && !$mode_min) $mode = "max"; elseif (!$mode_max && $mode_min) $mode = "min"; else return; if ($mode == "min" || $mode == "between") { $command_min = "A"; } if ($mode == "max" || $mode == "between") { $command_max = "B"; } if ($mode == "between") { $command = $command_min . " AND " . $command_max; } else { if ($mode == "min") $command = $command_min; if ($mode == "max") $command = $command_max; } echo $command;

  • Excel VBA: Error Handling with Case Statement

    - by AME
    I am trying to validate a file that is uploaded by the user using the code below. The error handler checks the top row of the uploaded file for three specific column names. If one or more of the column names is not present, the program should return a prompt to the user notifying them which column(s) are missing from the file that they uploaded and then close the file. There are a couple issues with my current VBA code that I am seeking help with: The prompt doesn't specify which column(s) are missing to the user. The error handler is triggered even when all required columns are present in the uploaded file. Code: Sub getworkbook() ' Get workbook... Dim ws As Worksheet Dim filter As String Dim targetWorkbook As Workbook, wb As Workbook Dim Ret As Variant Set targetWorkbook = Application.ActiveWorkbook ' get the customer workbook filter = ".xlsx,.xls" caption = "Please select an input file " Ret = Application.GetOpenFilename(filter, , caption) If Ret = False Then Exit Sub Set wb = Workbooks.Open(Ret) On Error GoTo ErrorLine: 'Check for columns var1 = ActiveSheet.Range("1:1").Find("variable1", LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt:=xlWhole, MatchCase:=True).Column var2 = ActiveSheet.Range("1:1").Find("variable2", LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt:=xlWhole, MatchCase:=True).Column var3 = ActiveSheet.Range("1:1").Find("variable3", LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt:=xlWhole, MatchCase:=True).Column ErrorLine: MsgBox ("The selected file is missing a key data column, please upload a correctly formated file.") If Error = True Then ActiveWorkSheet.Close wb.Sheets(1).Move Before:=targetWorkbook.Sheets("Worksheet2") ActiveSheet.Name = "DATA" End Sub

  • How can I improve this SQL to avoid several problems with its results?

    - by Josh Curren
    I am having some problems with trying to search. Currently this will only return results that have at least 1 row in the maintenance_parts table. I would like it to return results even if there are 0 parts rows. My second problem is that when you search for a vehicle and it should return multiple results (multiple maintenance rows) it will only return 1 result for that vehicle. Some Background Info: The user has 2 fields to fill out. The fields are vehicle and keywords. The vehicle field is meant to allow searching based on the make, model, VIN, truck number (often is 2 - 3 digits or a letter prefix followed by 2 digits), and a few other fields that belong to the truck table. The keywords are meant to search most fields in the maintenance and maintenance_parts tables (things like the description of the work, parts name, parts number). The maintenance_parts table can contain 0, 1, or more rows for each maintenance row. The truck table contains exactly 1 row for every maintenance row. A truck can have multiple maintenance records. "SELECT M.maintenance_id, M.some_id, M.type_code, M.service_date, M.mileage, M.mg_id, M.mg_type, M.comments, M.work_done, MATCH( M.comments, M.work_done) AGAINST( '$keywords' ) + MATCH( P.part_num, P.part_desc, P.part_ref) AGAINST( '$keywords' ) + MATCH( T.truck_number, T.make, T.model, T.engine, T.vin_number, T.transmission_number, T.comments) AGAINST( '$vehicle' ) AS score FROM maintenance M, maintenance_parts P, truck T WHERE M.maintenance_id = P.maintenance_id AND M.some_id = T.truck_id AND M.type_code = 'truck' AND ( (MATCH( T.truck_number, T.make, T.model, T.engine, T.vin_number, T.transmission_number, T.comments) AGAINST( '$vehicle' ) OR T.truck_number LIKE '%$vehicle%') OR MATCH( P.part_num, P.part_desc, P.part_ref) AGAINST( '$keywords' ) OR MATCH( M.comments, M.work_done) AGAINST( '$keywords' ) ) AND M.status = 'A' GROUP BY maintenance_id ORDER BY score DESC, maintenance_id DESC LIMIT 0, $limit"

  • Which is the 'correct' way to do this (if statement)

    - by frinkz
    I've got plenty of these lying around, and I'm wondering if I'm going to face any trouble - or performance problems. I have method A: MyClass monkey; ... if(monkey != null) { ... } Or method B: boolean hasMonkey; //This is set to TRUE when monkey is not null MyClass monkey; ... if(hasMonkey) { ... } On a functional level, they both do the same thing. Right now, I'm using method A. Is that a bad way of doing things? Which is going to perform better?

  • Java2D: if statement doesn`t work with java.awt.Color

    - by DarkSun
    I have a getPixelColour function: Color getPixelColor(int x, int y) { if(mazeImage == null) System.out.println(":("); int pixel = mazeImage.getRGB(x, y); int red = (pixel & 0x00ff0000) >> 16; int green = (pixel & 0x0000ff00) >> 8; int blue = pixel & 0x000000ff; return new Color(red,green,blue); } For example a pixel is black, and System.out.println(getPixelColor(x,y) + " " + Color.BLACK); writes "java.awt.Color[r=0,g=0,b=0] java.awt.Color[r=0,g=0,b=0]" But getPixelColor(x,y) == Color.BLACK return false. What's wrong with it?

  • SQL Server 2005: Why would a delete from a temp table hang forever?

    - by Dr. Zim
    DELETE FROM #tItem_ID WHERE #tItem_ID.Item_ID NOT IN (SELECT DISTINCT Item_ID FROM Item_Keyword JOIN Keyword ON Item_Keyword.Keyword_ID = Keyword.Record_ID WHERE Keyword LIKE @tmpKW) The Keyword is %macaroni%. Both temp tables are 3300 items long. The inner select executes in under a second. All strings are nvarchar(249). All IDs are int. Any ideas? I executed it (it's in a stored proc) for over 12 minutes without it finishing.

  • How do I create a create and execute an SQL command using OleDB directly?

    - by Pagis
    I want to use the OleDB interfaces directly to open a connection to a DB, create a command and executing it (for example using the ICommandText interface). The main thing I can't find is how to create the connection and the command object and how to connect the object that implements the ICommandText to the connection. In ADO I would just use the ActiveConnection property but I want to do this directly on the OleDB interfaces. Also, if anyone can recommend a tutorial to OleDB, ether online or a book, free or not that would be great (but a tutorial and not just a reference / API) I'm using C++ but any native code would be fine.

  • Is "campaign_$" a bad name for a SQL column?

    - by Summer
    PostgreSQL has allowed me to name a column "campaign_$". I like the name because it's short and to the point, and other potential names like "campaign_receipts" seem longer and less clear. BUT, I wonder if I'll eventually regret putting a $ symbol in a column name, either in PHP or in some other distant part of the architecture. Should I just stick to letters and underscores? Thanks!

  • Why does my SQL database not work in Android?

    - by user1426967
    In my app a click on an image button brings you to the gallery. After clicking on an image I want to call onActivityResult to store the image path. But it does not work. In my LogCat it always tells me that it crashes when it tries to save the image path. Can you find the problem? My onActivityResult method: mImageRowId = savedInstanceState != null ? savedInstanceState.getLong(ImageAdapter.KEY_ROWID) : null; @Override protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) { if(requestCode == PICK_FROM_FILE && data != null && data.getData() != null) { Uri uri = data.getData(); if(uri != null) { Cursor cursor = getContentResolver().query(uri, new String[] { android.provider.MediaStore.Images.ImageColumns.DATA}, null, null, null); cursor.moveToFirst(); String image = cursor.getString(0); cursor.close(); if(image != null) { // HERE IS WHERE I WANT TO SAVE THE IMAGE. HERE MUST BE THE ERROR! if (mImageRowId == null) { long id = mImageHelper.createImage(image); if (id > 0) { mImageRowId = id; } } // Set the image and display it in the edit activity Bitmap bitmap = BitmapFactory.decodeFile(image); mImageButton.setImageBitmap(bitmap); } } } } This is my onSaveInstanceState method: private static final Long DEF_ROW_ID = 0L; @Override protected void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle outState) { outState.putLong(ImageAdapter.KEY_ROWID, mImageRowId != null ? mImageRowId : DEF_ROW_ID); super.onSaveInstanceState(outState); } This is a part from my DbAdapter: public long createImage(String image) { ContentValues cv = new ContentValues(); cv.put(KEY_IMAGE, image); return mImageDb.insert(DATABASE_TABLE, null, cv); }
