• GUI Framework for flash (as3)

  I can't seem to find any GUI framework's for as3 that are as good as any the applications I already see out on the web; Is this something most people code themselves or am I missing something in flash itself? I'm looking for dialogs/windows, buttons, text boxes, combos, drop downs, menus, etc etc and the ability to extend the components to make new ones. I'd also prefer it to be as3 but any others will do also. May need to elaborate a little.. I'm actually looking for a framework to allow me to create my own GUIs in flash, custom skins, colors, styles, etc.

• Are there any tools to help the user to design a State Machine to be consumed by my application?

  When reading this question I remembered there was something I have been researching for a while now and I though Stackoverflow could be of help. I have created a framework that handles applications as state machines. Currently all the state business logic and transactions are handled via Java code. I was looking for some UI implementation that would allow the user to draw the state machines and transactions and generate a file that can later on be consumed by my framework to "run" the workflow according to one or more defined state machines. Ideally I would like to use an open standard like SCXML. The goal as the UI would be to have something like this plugin IBM have for Rational Software Architect: Do you know any editor, plugin or library that would have something similar or at least serve as a good starting point?

• where do I submit the ipad apps?

  I read Apple is allowing developers to submit iPad apps for the great opening of the ipad store, but I cannot find anything in my account that says that or allows sending the apps. Another thing is: in order for an app to be accepted you have to sign it with your own certificate but to do that you have to select the device on Xcode. As far as I know, Xcode do not signs with certificates applications that run on the simulator. Beyond that, any try to build a distribution package on Xcode shows messages like "you should disable armv6", and others. So, I ask. Is this news true? If yes, how to I manage to have the app ready for iPad and ready for submission? thanks.

  I have been developing several Grails applications over the past couple of years. I am increasingly finding that the three grails environments (dev, test, prod) aren't enough to satisfy my needs. The more "enterprisey" your application gets, the more environments you tend to have. I tend to use 6 environments for my development cycle... DEVA //My dev DEVB //Team mates dev CI_TEST //CI like Hudson QA_TEST //Testing team environment UAT_TEST //Customers testing environment PROD //Production Im wondering if there is a way to define custom Grails environments? I dont think there is, but the feature could be handy. The way I am getting around this right now is by externalising the config to a properties file. Id imagine that this is a pretty common requirement, so how have you been dealing with your environments?

  I understand that is not possible to have applications with multiple entry points under Windows. I have a MFC application and I added code for making it running as a service (main() entry point and other required stuff) but it looks that Windows will always run the WinMain() from MFC instead of my main. The question is how can I disable the WinMain() from MFC in order to be able to run my own main(). Probably the same problem would apply if you want to run the same application as a console application. What do I have to change in project properties in order to build it as a console application (main instead of WinMain)? Is commenting my CWinApp the only solution?

  From Beej's Guide to Network programming You can force it to use IPv4 or IPv6 in the ai_family field, or leave it as AF_UNSPEC to use whatever. This is cool because your code can be IP version-agnostic. As the title says - what would be the disadvantages (or risks, if any) of always using AF_UNSPEC, instead of specifying IPv4 or IPv6? Or it's only for one reason - if the version is specified, this will guarantee that this and only this version is supported? A little background - I think about adding support for IPv6 in client-server (C++) applications and both versions should be supported. So I wondered if it's fine to use AF_UNSPEC or it's better to "recognize" the address from the string and use AF_INET6 or AF_INET, depending on the address.

  In my experience building web applications, I've always used a n-tier approach. A DAL that gets data from the db and populates the objects, and BLL that gets objects from the DAL and performs any business logic required on them, and the website that gets it's display data from the BLL. I've recently started learning LINQ, and most of the examples show the queries occurring right from the Web Application code-behinds(it's possible that I've only seen overly simplified examples). In the n-tier architectures, this was always seen as a big no-no. I'm a bit unsure of how to architect a new Web Application. I've been using the Server Explorer and dbml designer in VS2008 to create the dbml and object relationships. It seems a little unclear to me if the dbml would be considered the DAL layer, if the website should call methods within a BLL, which then would do the LINQ queries, etc. What are some general architecture best practices, or approaches to creating a Web Application solution using LINQ to SQL?

  Hi all, I'm looking for a way to automate the deployment of a custom CAS policy in SharePoint. What i would like to achieve is the following: All assemblies that have been built and signed by our build server (with a secret key) should run in SharePoint under the 'higher than normal' trust level. Now I can manually edit the cas policy files to include something like this: <CodeGroup class="UnionCodeGroup" version="1" PermissionSetName="MyPermissionSet" Name="[My Company public key]" Description="Grants all "> <IMembershipCondition class="StrongNameMembershipCondition" version="1" PublicKeyBlob="[public key goes here]" /> </CodeGroup> And that works great. However, we have several huge sharepoint farms, with many applications running on it. I'd like to avoid having to manually edit all policy files to include this xml snippet.   This is not really a "how to" question. Is there a "standard" file structure that applications use to store the checksums of files in a folder? I'm developing a tool to check various things like crc32, md5, sha1, sha256, etc... I'd like to have my program store the various hashes in files in the folder of what I'm checking. I know that there is a file commonly used called 'md5sums' or 'sha1sums'. But what about CRC? I haven't noticed any around. And if there is, what's the structure of it? Thanks.

• Most Efficient Way of calling an external webservice in Java?

  In one of our applications we need to call the Yahoo Soap Webservice to Get Weather and other related info. I used the wsdl2java tool from axis1.4 and generated th required stubs and wrote a client. I use jsp's use bean to include the client bean and call methods defined in the client which call the yahoo webservice inturn. Now the problem: When users make calls to the jsp the response time of the webservice differs greatly, like for one user it took less then 10 seconds and the other in the same network took more than a minute. I was just wondering if Axis1.4 queues the requests even though the jsps are multithreaded. And finally is there an efficient way of calling the webservice(Yahoo weather). Typically i get around 200 simultaneous requests from my users.

  I have read about pointers to class members, but I have never seen them being used in any practical applications. Can someone explain what are the use cases of such pointers? Is it really necessary to have such pointers?   In Android applications such as Twitter (official app), when you encounter a ListView, you can pull it down (and it will bounce back when released) to refresh the content. I wonder what is the best way, in your opinion, to implement that? Some possibilities I could think of: An item on top of the ListView - however I don't think scrolling back to item position 1 (0-based) with animation on the ListView is an easy task. Another view outside the ListView - but I need to take care of moving the ListView position down when it is pulled, and I'm not sure if we can detect if the drag-touches to the ListView still really scroll the items on the ListView. Any recommendations?

• How do you measure latency in low-latency environments?

  Here's the setup... Your system is receiving a stream of data that contains discrete messages (usually between 32-128 bytes per message). As part of your processing pipeline, each message passes through two physically separate applications which exchange the data using a low-latency approach (such as messaging over UDP) or RDMA and finally to a client via the same mechanism. Assuming you can inject yourself at any level, including wire protocol analysis, what tools and/or techniques would you use to measure the latency of your system. As part of this, I'm assuming that every message that is delivered to the system results in a corresponding (though not equivalent) message being pushed through the system and delivered to the client. The only tool that I've seen on the market like this is TS-Associates TipOff. I'm sure that with the right access you could probably measure the same information using a wire analysis tool (ala wireshark) and the right dissectors, but is this the right approach or are there any commodity solutions that I can use?

  My team is trying to setup an Apache reverse proxy from a customer's site into one of our web applications. http://www.example.com/app1/some-path maps to http://internal1.example.com/some-path Inside our application we use struts and have redirect = true set on certain actions in order to provide certain functionality. The 302 status messages from these re-directs cause the user to break out of the proxy resulting in an error page for the end user. HTTP/1.1 302 Found Location: http://internal.example.com/some-path/redirect Is there any way to setup the reverse proxy in apache so that the redirects work correctly? http://www.example.com/app1/some-path/redirect

• What are some good algorithms for drawing lines between graph nodes?

  What I'm specifically grappling with is not just the layout of a graph, but when a user selects a graph node and starts to drag it around the screen area, the line has to constantly be redrawn to reflect what it would look like if the user were to release the node. I suppose this is part of the layout algorithm? Also some applications get a bit fancy and don't simply draw the line in a nice curvy way, but also bend the line around the square shaped node in almost right angles. See attached image and keep in mind that as a node is dragged, the line is drawn as marching ants, and re-arranged nicely, while retaining its curved style.

Blackberry's "A70 – How to Deploy and Distribute Applications" document is kind of lacking.
