  A similar question has been asked, but since it always depends, I'm asking for my specific situation separately. I have a web-site page that shows some data that comes from a database, and to generate the data from that database I have to do some fairly complex multiple joins queries. The data is being updated once a day (nightly). I would like to pre-generate the data for the said view to speed up the page access. For that I am creating a table that contains exact data I need. Question: for my situation, is it reasonable to do complete table wipe followed by insert? or should I do update,insert? SQL wise seems like DELETE + INSERT will be easier (it is single SQL expression). EDIT: RDBMS: MS SQL Server 2008 Ent

• Why the input and the select do not get the same width?

  I have a table with two rows. The first row contains an input and the second row contains a select. Even though I have set their widths to be 100%, the select box is a few pixels smaller than the input. • before_filter not inheriting from parent controller correctly?

  Sorry if this may be a stupid question but I'm unable get my filters to inherit the way the Rails 3 documentation is saying it should. Specifically I have an Admin controller that was generated via: rails generate controller admin I added only a single action to the admin controller, the before filter & the private filter method class AdminController < ApplicationController before_filter require_admin_creds def index end private def require_admin_creds unless current_user && current_user.admin? flash[:error] = ... redirect_to .... end end end I next then created my nested resources under the admin section with: rails generate scaffold admin/model While my admin index is indeed getting the filter, the admin/model index (or any other actions) are not. What is happening under the hood here that I must have excluded? Thanks in advance.

  Is there official guidance or a threshold to indicate when it is best practice to use a foreign key in a MySQL database? Suppose you created a table for movies. One way to do it is to integrate the producer and director data into the same table. (movieID, movieName, directorName, producerName). However, suppose most directors and producers have worked on many movies. Would it be best to create two other tables for producers and directors, and use a foreign key in the movie table? When does it become best practice to do this? When many of the directors and producers are appearing several times in the column? Or is it best practice to employ a foreign key approach at the start? While it seems more efficient to use a foreign key, it also raises the complexity of the database. So when does the trade off between complexity and normalization become worth it? I'm not sure if there is a threshold or a certain number of cell repetitions that makes it more sensible to use a foreign key. I'm thinking about a database that will be used by hundreds of users, many concurrently. Many thanks!

For a funding, I would like to select the latest Letter created date and the ‘earliest worklist created since letter created’ date for a funding. It has a bug. It will omit those FundingId for which the minimum WorkList date is less than latest Letter date (even though it has another worklist with greater than letter created date). The 'work' table has a 'draft' column with values of either 1 or 0. I want the COUNT(tags.id) to take into account whether the work with the specific tag is in draft mode (1) or not. Say there are 10 pieces of work tagged with, for example, 'design'. The COUNT will be 10. But 2 of these pieces of work are in draft mode, so the COUNT should really be 8. How do I manage this?

  Hi, I am developing a console application. This application generates a self signed certificate and installs it in the current machine's certificate store. The steps invlolved are :- Generate a certificate Create a pfx file Install the pfx file For these steps i would need a password for protecting the private key and the pfx file. However these passwords are used only during the execution of the exe. Should I auto generate a password using some random number generation algorithm or accept the password as input from the user?   I am trying to create an update query and making little progress in getting the right syntax. The following query is working: SELECT t.Index1, t.Index2, COUNT( m.EventType ) FROM Table t LEFT JOIN MEvents m ON (m.Index1 = t.Index1 AND m.Index2 = t.Index2 AND (m.EventType = 'A' OR m.EventType = 'B') ) WHERE (t.SpecialEventCount IS NULL) GROUP BY t.Index1, t.Index2 It creates a list of triplets Index1,Index2,EventCounts. It only does this for case where t.SpecialEventCount is NULL. The update query I am trying to write should set this SpecialEventCount to that count, i.e. COUNT(m.EventType) in the query above. This number could be 0 or any positive number (hence the left join). Index1 and Index2 together are unique in Table t and they are used to identify events in MEvent. How do I have to modify the select query to become an update query? I.e. something like UPDATE Table SET SpecialEventCount=COUNT(m.EventType)..... but I am confused what to put where and have failed with numerous different guesses.

  So, this is mainly for fun, I'm poking around and trying to find my way inside a few fonts and i have a few questions i'd reeally appreciate some help on if anyone has done this kind of stuff. cmap table The fonts i am testing with contain several cmap subtables of different formats. I can read them, but i don't understand which i should be using. ie. what is the strategy for choosing the most appropriate subtable? Does this even make sense? glyf table This is really making my head hurt. I'm going by what is on here. Looking at the second table on that page.. I've got 'n' endPtsOfContours, 'n' instructions and 'n' flags but it is not clear to me if i have the same number of flags as contours (i know how many contours i have). Then, to make matters worse..(fun!) i have an array of xCoords and an array of yCoords. These arrays seem to be of indeterminate length and may contain data of either BYTE or SHORT but we are not going to tell you which.. Thanks to anyone willing to shed some light.

  Since "bug in .NET" is often not the real cause of a problem, I wonder if I'm missing something here. What I'm doing feels pretty simple. I'm iterating through the elements in a HtmlDocument called doc like this: System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("*** " + doc.Url + " ***"); foreach (HtmlElement field in doc.All) System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(string.Format("Tag = {0}, ID = {1} ", field.TagName, field.Id)); I then discovered the debug window output was this: Tag = !, ID = Tag = HTML, ID = Tag = HEAD, ID = Tag = TITLE, ID = Tag = LINK, ID = ... when the actual HTML document looks like this: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <html> <head> <title>Protocol</title> <link rel="Stylesheet" type="text/css" media="all" href="ProtocolStyle.css"> </head> <body onselectstart="return false"> <table> <!-- Misc. table elements and cell values --> </table> </body> </html> Commenting out the LINK tag solves the issue for me, and the document is completely parsed. The ProtocolStyle.css file exist on disk and is loaded properly, if that would matter. Is this a bug in .NET 3.5 SP1, or what? For being such a web-oriented framework, I find it hard to believe there would be such a major bug in it.

• MySql product\tag query optimisation - please help!

  Hi There I have an sql query i am struggling to optimise. It basically is used to pull back products for a shopping cart. The products each have tags attached using a many to many table product_tag and also i pull back a store name from a separate store table. Im using group_concat to get a list of tags for the display (this is why i have the strange groupby orderby clauses at the bottom) and i need to order by dateadded, showing the latest scheduled product first. Here is the query.... SELECT products.*, stores.name, GROUP_CONCAT(tags.taglabel ORDER BY tags.id ASC SEPARATOR " ") taglist FROM (products) JOIN product_tag ON products.id=product_tag.productid JOIN tags ON tags.id=product_tag.tagid JOIN stores ON products.cid=stores.siteid WHERE dateadded < '2010-05-28 07:55:41' GROUP BY products.id ASC ORDER BY products.dateadded DESC LIMIT 2 Unfortunately even with a small set of data (3 tags and about 12 products) the query is taking 00.0034 seconds to run. Eventually i want to have about 2000 products and 50 tagsin this system (im guessing this will be very slooooow).   I have been writing in java for a few months now and have just started using netbeans. I have spent all day today trying to work out how to connect to an SQL database and display data from 2 tables (ie display the data from from a select statement with an inner join) in a JTable. I have tried using JPQL with the following statment SELECT j, cust.name FROM Job j JOIN j.jobnumber cust where the job table has a field called customer that references id in the customer table. The issue is that I need to break this down by where the user registered from (e.g. website, wap site, or a mobile application). the resulting output data should look like this... [date] [num_reg_website] [num_reg_wap_site] [num_reg_mobileapp] 1 FEB 2010,24,35,64 2 FEB 2010,23,85,48 3 FEB 2010,29,37,79 etc... The source table is as follows... • How to Store and Retrieve Images Using SQL Server (Server Management Studio)

  I am having difficulties when trying to insert files into a SQL Server database. I'll try to break this down as best as I can: What data type should I be using to store image files (jpeg/png/gif/etc)? Right now my table is using the image data type, but I am curious if varbinary would be a better option. How would I go about inserting the image into the database? Does Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio have any built in functions that allow insertions of files into tables? If so, how is that done? Also, how could this be done through the use of an HTML form with PHP handling the input data and placing it into the table? How would I fetch the image from the table and display it on the page? I understand how to SELECT the cell's contents, but how would I go about translating that into a picture. Would I have to have a header(Content type: image/jpeg)? I have no problem doing any of these things with MySQL, but the SQL Server environment is still new to me, and I am working on a project for my job that requires the use of stored procedures to grab various data. Any and all help is appreciated.

• Asign Id's dynamically to DOM elements with javascript.

  Hello everybody, I just have a quick question about how to generate id's on-the-fly for HTML elements. So far I've tried a few things, I started with a "for" loop, I already know how many elements I have to generate Id's for, in this case I have an "ul" with 6 "li". My "for" loop is as follows: var items = $("ul li").length; for(var i = 0; i <= items; i++){ $("ul li").attr("id", "number" + i); } "number" would be the new id concatenated with "i", so I get a different Id for each "li". As you can probably tell, this does not work, because I end up with the same Id for each "li": in this case I get <li id="number6">... </li> for all the "li" elments in the "ul". I tried a "while" loop and ".each()" with jQuery but I get the exact same thing. Any help would be appreciated.

• A very interesting MYSQL problem (related to indexing, million records, algorithm.)

  This problem is pretty hard to describe and therefore difficult to search the answer. I hope some expert could share you opinions on that. I have a table with around 1 million of records. The table structure is similar to something like this: items{ uid (primary key, bigint, 15) updated (indexed, int, 11) enabled (indexed, tinyint, 1) } The scenario is like this. I have to select all of the records everyday and do some processing. It takes around 3 second to handle each item. I have written a PHP script to fetch 200 items each time using the following. select * from items where updated unix_timestamp(now()) - 86400 and enabled = 1 limit 200; I will then update the "updated" field of the selected items to make sure that it wont' be selected again within one day. The selected query is something like that. update items set updated = unix_timestamp(now()) where uid in (1,2,3,4,...); Then, the PHP will continue to run and process the data which doesn't require any MYSQL connection anymore. Since I have million records and each record take 3 seconds to process, it's definitely impossible to do it sequentially. Therefore, I will execute the PHP in every 10 seconds. However, as time goes by and the table growth, the select getting much slower. Sometimes, it take more than 100 seconds to run! Do you guys have any suggestion how may I solve this problem?

• Which design pattern fits - strategy makes sense ?

  --Bump *One desperate try to get someone's attention I have a simple database table that stores list of users who have subscribed to folders either by email OR to show up on the site (only on the web UI). In the storage table this is controlled by a number(1 - show on site 2- by email). When I am showing in UI I need to show a checkbox next to each of folders for which the user has subscribed (both email & on site). There is a separate table which stores a set of default subscriptions which would apply to each user if user has not expressed his subscription. This is basically a folder ID and a virtual group name. But, Email subscriptions do not count for applying these default groups. So if no "on site" subscription apply default group. Thats the rule. How about a strategy pattern here (Pseudo code) Interface ISubscription public ArrayList GetSubscriptionData(Pass query object) Public class SubscriptionWithDefaultGroup Implement ArrayList GetSubscriptionData(Pass query object) Public class SubscriptionWithoutDefaultGroup Implement ArrayList GetSubscriptionData(Pass query object) Public class SubscriptionOnlyDefaultGroup Implement ArrayList GetSubscriptionData(Pass query object) does this even make sense? • LINQ - 'Could not translate expression' with previously used and proven query condition

  I am fairly new to LINQ and can't get my head around some inconsistency in behaviour. Any knowledgeable input would be much appreciated. I see similar issues on SO and elsewhere but they don't seem to help. I have a very simple setup - a company table and an addresses table. Each company can have 0 or more addresses, and if 0 one must be specified as the main address. I'm trying to handle the cases where there are 0 addresses, using an outer join and altering the select statement accordingly. Please note I'm currently binding the output straight to a GridView so I would like to keep all processing within the query. The following DOES work IQueryable query = from comp in context.Companies join addr in context.Addresses on comp.CompanyID equals addr.CompanyID into outer // outer join companies to addresses table to include companies with no address from addr in outer.DefaultIfEmpty() where (addr.IsMain == null ? true : addr.IsMain) == true // if a company has no address ensure it is not ruled out by the IsMain condition - default to true if null select new { comp.CompanyID, comp.Name, AddressID = (addr.AddressID == null ? -1 : addr.AddressID), // use -1 to represent a company that has no addresses MainAddress = String.Format("{0}, {1}, {2} {3} ({4})", addr.Address1, addr.City, addr.Region, addr.PostalCode, addr.Country) }; but this displays an empty address in the GridView as ", , ()" So I updated the MainAddress field to be MainAddress = (addr.AddressID == null ? "" : String.Format("{0}, {1}, {2} {3} ({4})", addr.Address1, addr.City, addr.Region, addr.PostalCode, addr.Country)) and now I'm getting the Could not translate expression error and a bunch of spewey auto-generated code in the error which means very little to me. The condition I added to MainAddress is no different to the working condition on AddressID, so can anybody tell me what's going on here? Any help greatly appreciated.

• How to put data from List<string []> to dataGridView

  Try to put some data from List to dataGridView, but have some problem with it. Try to check result by putting additional temp variables - but it's ok - please see pic below Where I'm wrong? Maybe i use dataGridView not in correct way?
