  All, I am having trouble requesting info from HTTPS site using CURL and PHP. I am using Solaris 10. It so happens that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I am not sure what is the cause. • Android Alert Dialog Extract User Choice Radio Button?

  Apologies for any coding ignorance, I am a beginner and am still learning! I am creating a quiz app which reads questions off a SQL database and plots them as points on a google map. As the user clicks each point, an alert dialog appears with radio buttons to answer some question. My radiobuttons are in CustomItemizedOverlay file and when I click submit, I want to be able to send the user choice back to the database, save it and return to the user if their answer is correct. My question is this, how do I pass the user choice out once the submit button has been clicked? I tried making a global variable to read what was selected to no avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated! • Internet explorer and floats: please explain

  Yesterday someone asked Width absorbing HTML elements. I presented two solutions: one table-based and one pure CSS. Now the pure CSS one works well in Firefox and Chrome but not in IE. Basically the floats are being bumped down to the next line. It is my understanding (and the behaviour of FF and Chrome) that this should not be the case because the left divs are block level elements that floats should basically ignore. Complete code example is below. Adding a DOCTYPE to force IE into standards compliant mode helps slightly but the problem remains. So my question is: am I mistaken about my understanding of floats or is this IE's problem? More importantly, how do I get this to work in IE? • What language/framework (technology) to use for website (flash games portal)

  Hello, I know there are a lot of similar questions on the net, but because I am a newbie in web development I didn't find the solution for my specific problem. I am planing on creating a flash games portal from scratch. It is a big chance that there will be big traffic from the beginning (millions of pageviews). I want to reduce the server costs as much as possible but in the same time to not be tide to an expensive contract as there is a chance that the project will not be as successfully as I want and in that case the money would be very little. The question is : what technology to use? I don't know any web dev technology yet so it doesn't matter what I will learn. My web dev experience is a little php 8 years ago, and from then I programmed in C++ / Java- game and mobile development. I like Java and C syntax and language very much and I tend to dislike dynamic typing or non robust scripting (like php)- but I can get along if these are the best choices. The candidates are now: - Grails (my best for now) Ruby on Rails Cake PHP Other technologies (Google App Engine, Python/Django etc...) I was considering at first using pure C and compiling the web app in the server- just to squeeze more from the servers, but soon I understand that this is overkill. Next my eyes came on Ruby - as there is a lot of buzz for it's easiness of use. Next I discovered Grails and looked at Java because it is said that it is "faster". But I don't know what this "Faster" really means on my needs, so here comes the first question: 1) What will be my biggest consumption on the server, other than bandwidth, for a lot of flash content requests? Is it memory? I heard that Java needs a lot of memory, but is faster. Is it CPU? I am planning to take some daily VPS.NET nodes at first, to see if there is a demand, and if the "spike" is permanent to move to a dedicated server (serverloft.com has some good offers), else to remain with less nodes. I was also considering developing in Google App Engine- cheap or free hosting to use at first - so I can test my assumption- and also very easy to use (no need for sys administration) but the costs became high if used more ( 3 million games played / month .. x mb/ each). And the issue with Google is that it looks me in this technology. My other concern is scalability (not only for traffic/users, but as adding functionality) My plans are to release a functional site in just 4 weeks (just the basics frontend and some quick basic backend - so I can be able to modify some things and add games manually) - but then to raise it and add more things to it. I am planning to take a little different approach than other portals so I need to write it from scratch (a script will not do). 2) Will Grails take much more resources than RoR or Php server wise? I heard that making it on Java stack will be hardware expensive and is overkill if you don't make a bank application. My application will not be very complex (I hope and i will try to) but will have a lot of traffic. I also took in account using CDN for files, but the cheapest CDN found was 5c/GB (vps.net) and the cost per gb on serverloft (http://www.serverloft.com/dedizierte-server/server-details.php?products=4) is only 1.79 cents/GB and comes with the other resources either. I am new to this domain (web). I am learning the ropes and searching on the web for ~half of year but don't have any really practical experience, so I know that I must have some naive thinking and other issues that i don't know from now, so please give me any advice you want regarding anything, not just the specific questions asked. • How do I get public feed from facebook without user authentication on a native/Desktop app?

  I'm looking to get publicly available facebook feeds (i.e. Google's facebook page/posts). However instead of forcing the user to sign into their own facebook app, I want to be able to access these posts. I've looked into using "App Access Tokens" however since my application is a native/Desktop app (iOS, Android, WP8/Win 8) I'm not able to do this. Is there a way to get publicly accessible feeds from facebook without user authentication? I'm using the Facebook C# SDK to access facebook. • android.intent.action.SCREEN_ON doesn't work as a receiver intent filter

  I'm trying to get a BroadcastReceiver invoked when the screen is turned on. In my AndroidManifest.xml I have specified : <receiver android:name="IntentReceiver"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.SCREEN_ON"></action> </intent-filter> </receiver> However it seems the receiver is never invoked (breakpoints don't fire, log statements ignored). I've swapped out SCREEN_ON for BOOT_COMPLETED for a test, and this does get invoked. This is in a 1.6 (SDK level 4) project. • Visual Studio 2008 SignTool.exe not found

  I can't publish in 2008, I was previously using 2005 and it published just fine. Error 2 An error occurred while signing: SignTool.exe not found. I know there are tons of hits for a search on signtool.exe on google. The ones I've found involve copying the file to X,Y,Z locations and ensuring signtool matches up with your VS command prompt path. When I run my start- program files - visual studio 2008 - Visual Studio Tools - Visual Studio Command prompt. and type signtool.exe it finds the file just fine. I have Visual Studio 2005 professional edition, Visual studio 2008 profession edition, Visual studio 2005 SDK February 2007, just installed Visial Studio 2008 SDK1.1 to see if that would fix it, no luck. • Why were namespaces removed from ECMAScript consideration?

  Namespaces were once a consideration for ECMAScript (the old ECMAScript 4) but were taken out. As Brendan Eich says in this message: One of the use-cases for namespaces in ES4 was early binding (use namespace intrinsic), both for performance and for programmer comprehension -- no chance of runtime name binding disagreeing with any earlier binding. But early binding in any dynamic code loading scenario like the web requires a prioritization or reservation mechanism to avoid early versus late binding conflicts. Plus, as some JS implementors have noted with concern, multiple open namespaces impose runtime cost unless an implementation works significantly harder. For these reasons, namespaces and early binding (like packages before them, this past April) must go. But I'm not sure I understand all of that. What exactly is a prioritization or reservation mechanism and why would either of those be needed? Also, must early binding and namespaces go hand-in-hand? For some reason I can't wrap my head around the issues involved. Can anyone attempt a more fleshed out explanation? Also, why would namespaces impose runtime costs? In my mind I can't help but see little difference in concept between a namespace and a function using closures. For instance, Yahoo and Google both have YAHOO and google objects that "act like" namespaces in that they contain all of their public and private variables, functions, and objects within a single access point. So why, then, would a namespace be so significantly different in implementation? Maybe I just have a misconception as to what a namespace is exactly.

  Hey there. I'm writing an application in WPF using the MVVM-pattern and will really often use TextBoxes. I don't want to use labels for the user to know user what the text box is for, i.e. I don't want something like this: <TextBlock> Name: </TextBlock> <TextBox /> Instead, I would like the TextBox to contain its own label. Statically, you would express it like this: <TextBox>Name</TextBox> If the cursor is displayed in the textbox, i.e. the TextBox gains focus, I want the description text to disappear. If the TextBox is left empty and it loses the focus, the description text should be shown again. It's similar to the search textbox of StackOverflow or the one of Firefox. (please tell me if your not sure what I mean). One TextBox's label may change at runtime, dependending on e.g. a ComboBox's selected element or a value in my ViewModel. (It's like in Firefox's search TextBox, if you select google from the search engins' menu, the TextBox's label changes to "Google", if you select "Yahoo" its set to "Yahoo"). Thus I want to be able to bind the label's content. Consider that I may already have a Binding on the Text-Property of the TextBox. How can implement such a behaviour and make it reusable for any of my TextBox's? Code is welcome but not needed; a description of what to do is enough. Thank you in advance.

• Jquery.get() not returning any data

  Hi I am trying to scrape other people web pages (for the forces of good not evil). I am currently trying to do this with javascript/jquery from with in a browser. I am finding that the no data is returned from the jquery.get() success call back function. My code. $.get('http://www.google.co.uk/', function (data, textStatus, XMLHttpRequest){ alert("status " + textStatus); alert('data:' + data); window.data=data; window.textStatus=textStatus; window.httpReq = XMLHttpRequest}); In my mind this should simply do a get on google store the data in window.data and we are all good. What happens is we get textStatus == success and data == "". the status on the XMLHttpRequest is 4(success). I have looked at the network traffic using a transparent proxy (Charles) and everything looks find there http status 200 plenty of data being returned. I am running this just from the Firebug console in Firefox. Any ideas?

  If you design a distributed application for easy scale-out, or you just want to make use of any of the new “cloud computing” offerings by Amazon, Google or Microsoft, there are some typical concepts or components you usually end up using: distributed blob storage (aka S3) asynchronous, durable message queues (aka SQS) non-Relational-/non-transactional databases (like SimpleDB, Google BigTable, Azure SQL Services) distributed background worker pool load-balanced, edge-service processes handling user requests (often virtualized) distributed caches (like memcached) CDN (content delivery network like Akamai) Now when it comes to design and sketch an architecture that makes use of such patterns, are there any commonly used symbols I could use? Or even a download with some cool Visio stencils? :) It doesn’t have to be a formal system like UML but I think it would be great if there were symbols that everyone knows and understands, like we have commonly used shapes for databases or a documents, for example. I think it would be important to not mix it up with traditional concepts like a normal file system (local or network server/SAN), or a relational database. Simply speaking, I want to be able to draw some conclusions about an application’s scalability or data consistency issues by just looking at the system architecture overview diagram. Update: Thank you very much for your answers. I like the idea of putting a small "cloud symbol" on the traditional symbols. However I leave this thread open just in case someone will find specific symbols (maybe in a book or so) - or uploaded some pimped up Visio stencils ;)

• Notification Email Best Practices--From Server Setup to Programming

  All, I'm in the process now of building a SaaS tool that allows network admins to generate notification emails to the members of the end-users of our platform (among many many other things). I'm running into a bit of an "out of my expertise" wall, as I know there are a lot of variables involved with configuring an application that can: Run in a distributed way via load balancing and still-- Leverage a single mail server for sending notification emails Process unsubscribe requests Avoid any ISP blacklisting in the process. If anyone has the time and has done this before, I'd love if you could walk me through the A-Z of best practices both from a configuration perspective and an execution perspective for generating these emails (anything from necessary DNS settings to ideal SMTP setup and configuration) Currently, our application generates email via Google Apps using the PHPMailer class. While this works well, it doesn't queue messages (potential for timeout problems if any of our clients amass a very large list of end-users), and Google limits the amount of allowed generated email messages to 500/day. I know this is a lofty question, but any guidance you could provide would be smashing and a big help as we work through this hurtle in our beta development stage. Thanks!

• Slimbox 2 Plugin, jQuery Flickr, and IE8

  Hello, I am currently developing a site that I make use of two jQuery plugins: Flickr jquery plugin (http://code.google.com/p/jquery-flickr/) Slimbox (http://code.google.com/p/slimbox/) The first plugin is used to pull in flickr photos from a specific account. These photos are displayed as thumbnails on the page. I am then using the second plugin to display larger views of these images. Because the flickr photos are fetched when the page loads, I am calling the Slimbox 2 function like this: $(document).ready(function() { $("#Flickr").flickr(); //Call Flickr plugin $(window).bind('load', function() { $("#Flickr a").slimbox();//Call Slimbox2 }); }); On first testing this seemed to have worked perfectly. I tested multiple versions of FireFox, IE7, IE6, and Safari. Everything is great. However, the Slimbox lightbox effest does not work in IE8. However, if I put IE8 into compatibility mode, everything works as expected. I would like to avoid forcing compatibility mode. There are no javascript errors and I am at a loss for testing. • ASP.NET MVC GoogleBot Issues

  I wrote a site using ASP.NET MVC, and although it is not completely SEO optimized at this point I figured it is a good start. What I'm finding is that when I use Google's Webmaster Tools to fetch my site (to see what a GoogleBot sees) it sees this. HTTP/1.1 200 OK Cache-Control: public, max-age=1148 Content-Type: application/xhtml+xml; charset=utf-8 Expires: Mon, 18 Jan 2010 18:47:35 GMT Last-Modified: Mon, 18 Jan 2010 17:07:35 GMT Vary: * Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.0 X-AspNetMvc-Version: 2.0 X-AspNet-Version: 2.0.50727 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2010 18:28:26 GMT Content-Length: 254 <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title> Index </title> </head> <body> </body> </html> Obviously this is not what my site looks like. I have no clue where Google is getting that HTML from. Anybody have an answer and a solution? Anybody experience the same issues? Thanks in advance.
