• Finding the time to program in your spare time?

  I've got about a dozen programming projects bouncing about my head, and I'd love to contribute to some open source projects, the problem I have is that having spent the entire day staring at Visual Studio and or Eclipse (Sometimes both at the same time...) the last thing I feel like doing when I go home is program. How do you build up the motivation/time to work on your own projects after work? I'm not saying that I don't enjoy programming, it's just that I enjoy other things to and it can be hard to even do something you enjoy if you've spent all day already doing it. I think that if I worked at a chocolate factory the last thing I'd want to see when I got home was a Wonka bar.

• Linux Books For Windows/C++ Programmers?

  I'm a Windows C++ programmer with a great deal of experience, and I'm looking for book recommendations to get up to speed with programming in Linux (specifically RHE 6). Ideally, I'd like a book geared specifically to my needs. Something along the lines of "Linux C++ Programming for Windows Experts" would be nice. :) I'm open to any recommendations you have. My domain is primarily financial market data servers (no GUIs) and simple console apps. I do a lot of multithreading, a lot of networking, not a lot of user interface stuff. I know C++0x, but our production codebase can only use C++. Thanks for your recommendations for books and/or resources!

• Does heavy library and snippet codes usage make you a bad programmer?

  Overall I'm in programming for about 8 years now and it seems to me that I'm relying more and more on open source libraries and snippets (damn you GitHub!) to "get the job done". I know that in time I could write me own implementation but I like to focus on the overall design. Is this normal (non cooperate environment)? Does it make you a bad programmer if "programming" is nothing more than cluing different libraries together. Feels like it. I know about "don't reinvent the wheel" but what happens when you don't invent a single wheel anymore. What's your take on this?

• Ubuntu 14.04 ATI/Intel Hybrid Graphics DPM

  I have a Dell Inspiron 3521 with hybrid ATI/Intel graphics. (AMD Radeon 7670M / Intel HD 4000) using Ubuntu 14.04 with open source drivers for graphics. (xserver-xorg-video-ati) I read that Ubuntu 14.04 with the linux kernel version 3.13 supports auto switching between graphics and dynamic power management. Is it correct? Anyway, if it is true, I dont think that it is working in my system , because fan runs constantly and battery backup is less than 2 hours. lspci | grep -i vga 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. • 11.04 radeon screen tearing oddity

  I have a mobility radeon 5850 running 11.04 and am running catalyst 11.10 drivers. I noticed that whenever I have two windows open, one of top of the other, scrolling results in minor screen tearing, usually around the border of the window on the bottom. When I minimize or close the bottom the tearing goes away. I have tear free desktop enabled and tried looking for this specific issue but couldn't find anyone else with it. It happens in both Unity and Classic. Is there any fix for this?

I want to fetch only one column values (for example, table name-login, column name-password and values in password column are "manage","sales","general"). I want to fetch these values in text boxes. I have written code but it's not working. Do you have any knowledge from where can I start to develop as a Linux user? Do you have a suggestion for an easy-to-start game for which I can develop bots easily, caring more about the result of my algorithms rather than spending a lot of time dealing with the game code? I've read some publications about the applied methods to Quake 3 (c) and Open Arena. • Resources for game networking in Java

  I am currently working on a Java multiplayer game. The game itself (single player) already works perfectly fine and so does the chat. The only thing that is really missing is the multiplayer part. Sadly I am absolutely clueless on where to start with that. I roughly know that I will have to work with packages, and I also know many things about streaming etc (chat is already working). Oh and it should - according to this article - be a UDP server. My problem is that I can't find any resources on how to do this. A tutorial (book or website) would be perfect, alternatively a good example of an open source client/server (in Java of course) would be fine as well. If you feel like doing something helpful I'd also really appreciate someone "privately" teaching me via email or some chat program :) Thank you!

To avoid this, you use the lock keyword, but if you use that in the wrong way, your code deadlocks. It's all a nightmare. Luckily, there's a better way - Actors. They're really easy to think about. They're really safe (if you follow a couple of simple rules). • What is the best way to learn how to develop drivers?

  At some point in my career I would definitely like to get involved in some embedded programming. I was thinking that starting out with developing some drivers would be a good place to develop my abilities in the regard. I'm open to doing so on either windows or linux platform (eventually will want to probably attempt both). What tools would you recommend that I look into to get me started on this project?   Error when we are trying to access search in sharepoint site: "Your search cannot be completed because this site is not assigned to an indexer. Contact your administrator for more information." Solving Problem: 1. Go to SharePoint Central Administration > Application Management > Content Databases (Underneath SharePoint Web Application Management). 2. Select the correct SharePoint web application – click on the name of the Content databases  - this will open the  “Manage Content Database Settings” page. 3. Make sure that the Search Server is set on the “Manage Content Database Settings” page. Hope it helps!!

• Fix for EF4 Profiler Issue Coming in next Cumulative Update

  Hey!  What do you know?  Microsoft Connect really works! I was very happy this morning to open my email and find a notice from Umachandar on the SQL Programmability Team that they have created a fix for the Odd Profiler Results with EF4 issue that I wrote about last June.  Not only did I blog about it, but I logged an item to Connect with repro steps and sample code.  And now, they have announced that they have a fix for this problem and that it will be included in the next Cumulative Update for SQL Server 2008 R2. For those of you not running 2008 R2, or who prefer to wait for full Service Packs rather than install the latest Cumulative Updates, I also wrote about a workaround for the issue, as long as you do not require the Multiple Active Result Sets feature to be enabled. It is easy with Microsoft to get the feeling that you’re just shouting in the wind, and it is nice to get validation once in a while that they really are listening.

  I have been thinking how to create realistic sound for a car. The main sound is the engine, then all kind of wind, road and suspension sounds. Are there any open source projects for the engine sound simulation? Simply pitching up the sample does not sound too great. The ideal would be to something that allows me to pick type of the engine (i.e. inline-4 vs v-8), add extras like turbo/supercharger whine and finally set the load and rpm. • Suspend after delay via SSH

  I know how to suspend after a delay by using: echo 'pmi action suspend' | at now + 1 minutes However, that only seems to work as long as I keep the console window open. Am I correct in assuming that the at commands are cleared when I close the console? This is an issue as I want to be able to log in to my computer via SSH, send the suspend command, then log out before it happens. Suspending immediately tends to freeze my local console window, which is inconvenient. Is there a way to send a delayed suspend command without it being cleared when I log out?

  The Auto-Complete feature in Outlook 2013 automatically fills in names and email addresses for you when entering them in the To or Cc fields. Based on the characters you start to enter, Outlook displays a list of possible choices that match what you’ve entered. You can then either click the desired email address from the list or press Enter to insert the email address in the list. The Auto-Complete feature can save you time if you compose a lot of emails and have a lot of contacts in your address book. However, you do have to be careful when using the feature, so you don’t accidentally select the wrong email address and send an email to the wrong person. If you find the feature irritating and don’t want to use it, you can easily disable it. To disable the Auto-Complete feature, open Outlook and click the FILE tab.

It has hundreds of images that are loaded and used throughout the game, as well as a couple dozen .wav files for audio effects. What is the best way to distribute these? Should I just include the folders with all the files? Or is there a way I can package them into a single file, then open and extract them in my application? What's the best way to go about this?

That’s when I noticed the display brightness kept changing on its own… and realized the problem. OS X, just like your phone, and any modern device, tries to figure out the brightness of the room you’re in, and adjust the brightness of the screen. If you are over in Windows, it’s called “Adaptive” brightness, while your phone will just call it “Auto”. While this technology is great in theory, I don’t really need max brightness all the time, and I like to control it manually to make sure I’m getting the best battery life. Open up System Preferences, head to Displays. Then uncheck the Automatically adjust brightness setting.

  Interested in peoples opinions of Cuda vs openCL following NVidia's Cuda4 release. I had originally gone with openCL since cross platform, open standards are a good thing(tm). I assumed NVidia would fall into line as they had done with openGL. But having talked to some NVidia people, they (naturaly) claim that they will concentrate on CUDA and openCL is hampered by having committees and having to please everyone - like openGL. And with the new tools and libs in CUDA it's hard to argue with that. -I'm in a fairly technical market so I can require the users to have particular HW.

NX 110 NX Server is running. NX 999 Bye. It means i have setup NX server correctly.. But on other machine when i open NX client it is asking for hostname..what name should i give there? Every tutorial is explaining about how to install and start NX server but not about how to connect to the server from client.. Could you guys please help me? Thanks in Advance Deter

• Completely uninstall/reinstall Eclipse and add support for php and jquery

  I have been using Eclipse a short while and it worked perfectly until I started downloading different plugins that I didn't really need. Now I get a ton of different errors and can't even open a php file. What I want to do is just to remove Eclipse and reinstall it, but that was much harder that I first thought. I marked every eclipse package in synaptic packaged manager and selected complete removal, I even deleted the .meta folder in my working dictionary, but when I installed eclipse again. It was as if I hadn't removed anything. Same errors from the plug-ins I had installed before. Seems like when you install something in linux, files are stored all over the place. Makes real hard do remove anything. So how do I COMPLETELY remove Eclipse, reinstall it and add support for php and jquery. Thanks.
