• Should one generally develop a client library for REST services to help prevent API breakages?

  We have a project where UI code will be developed by the same team but in a different language (Python/Django) from the services layer (REST/Java). The code for each layer exits in different code repositories and which can follow different release cycles. I'm trying to come up with a process that will prevent/reduce breaking changes in the services layer from the perspective of the UI layer. I've thought to write integration tests at the UI layer level that we'll run whenever we build the UI or the services layer (we're using Jenkins as our CI tool to build the code which is in two Git repos) and if there are failures then something in the services layer broke and the commit is not accepted. Would it also be a good idea (is it a best practice?) to have the developer of the services layer create and maintain a client library for the REST service that exists in the UI layer that they will update whenever there is a breaking change in their Service API? Conceivably, we would then have the advantage of a statically-typed API that the UI code builds against. If the client library API changes, then the UI code won't compile (so we'll know sooner that there was a breaking change). I'd also still run the integration tests upon building the UI or services layer to further validate that the integration between UI and the service(s) still works.

• Using an Apt Repository for Paid Software Updates

  I'm trying to determine a way to distribute software updates for a hosted/on-site web application that may have weekly and/or monthly updates. I don't want the customers who use the on-site product to have to worry about updating it manually I just want it to download and install automatically ala Google Chrome. I'm planning on providing an OVF file with Ubuntu and the software installed and configured. My first thought on how to distributed software is to create six Apt repositories/channels (not sure which would be better at this point) that will be accessed through SSH using keys so if a customer doesn't renew their subscription we can disable their account: Beta - Used internally on test data to check the package for major defects. Internal - Used internally on live data to check the package for defects (dog fooding stage). External 1 - Deployed to 1% of our user base (randomly selected) to check for defects. External 9 - Deployed to 9% of our user base (randomly selected) to check for defects. External 90 - Deployed to the remaining 90% of users. Hosted - Deployed to the hosted environment. It will take a sign off at each stage to move into the next repository in case problems are reported. My questions to the community are: Has anyone tried something like this before? Can anyone see a downside to this type of a procedure? Is there a better way?

• Where can I find video and audio drivers for my netbook?

  I got a little netbook yesterday (an Acer Aspire One) for schoolwork and read in numerous reviews Ubuntu was a must. I dove into it blindly and downloaded 12.04 LTS and though I admit it's faster than before, I have no idea how it works yet and was stupid enough to get rid of the Windows 7 Starter that was on there before completely. I can see myself getting used to the rest of Ubuntu, but the main issue is that it seems to have eaten all of my drivers and I don't know where to get any Ubuntu compatible ones. Any video at all is jilty and kind of creepy and any audio is very distorted and REALLY creepy. I understand that this is a tiny $150 typing and light web use school device I'm talking about, but I feel really stupid making the poor thing worse than it was before and not knowing what to do about it. Does anyone know how to install graphics/sound drivers? Or, alternatively, does anyone know where I can get a copy of Windows 7 Starter. I can see myself liking this if the problems are fixable, but if not I still have the product key and would be able to tackle the problem by myself with that.

• Can .htaccess slow down a site?

  I'm working with a client on an e-commerce website. I implemented clean URLs using .htaccess. I also used .htaccess to solve canonical issues such as redirecting www to non-www and removing index.php from the URL. The website recently began to slow down dramatically, sometimes not even loading. The site is hosted on GoDaddy, and when the client called GoDaddy they told him it was the .htaccess file slowing down the website. I find this highly unlikely because of my past experiences, but I'm not 100% sure. My thinking is that the client's website is most likely on a shared server with a busy neighborhood, thus slowing down the site. It's not always slow, but rather sporadic throughout the day, loading fast at some points and slow at other points in time. Can the .htaccess file slow down a website to a crawl? If so, are there better ways to solve these problems with different rewrite rules and such? • Ubuntu installation on iMac

  I have an iMac configured as follows - Screen 27" CPU 3.4 GHz i7 Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970 1024 MB I downloaded Ubuntu version 11.10 64 bit ISO and burnt that to both DVD and USB stick as per the instructions on Ubuntu's download page. Neither will boot. Symptoms are as follows - DVD: When the iMac is restarted and booted from DVD (labelled Windows which isn't mentioned in Ubuntu's website instructions) one line is displayed against a black screen displaying a message about the developer and date. After 5 minutes the message hangs and the DVD ceases to spin. USB Stick: Strangely I have to select the EFI boot CD icon which appears after holding down the Alt key. A text menu appears offering me to try Ubuntu without installing. I select this and the screen goes blank and stays blank. Any ideas? Lastly, after writing Ubuntu to DVD and USB stick, neither could be read by OSX making the instructions to eject them as per Ubuntu website's instructions useless. This might help? Thanks, Shane.

• Dot Matrix printers setup...

  Hello! I am using debian which is similar to ubuntu. They have 7 dot matrix printers some very old like this one http://www.omnidatasys.net/product/desc_printer_ti880.htm which works from 1979 daily and at text is faster than many inkjects. I believe that it has his own language... Sending text to serial port (port server) prints garbage. However i think is prints only capital english up to 95 asccii and greek and the rest up to 127 i think greek capital.(special chip ) Sending english capital letters prints garbage i think but i amnt sure... i will try again... The other printer are ESC/P compatible and i use generic epson driver provided from ghostscript... However i think that sending text via lp -dpr1 filename It prints the text as a grafic...Changing from printer font face(courier,times roman etc) or pitch has no effect... I am wondering if is there any work arround for this? In AIX they claim that lp command printed output as text as it prints and cobol programs send raw text to to lp printers . However in AIX they use some custom filters for the printers and has more options for dot matrix printers.. I would like to know if there is a solution for this.. To avoid graphics mode for text and change font face somehow.. The most Straight-through approach would be to use no driver ,just send ESC/P from cobol but this requires too much work... • How do I structure code and builds for continuous delivery of multiple applications in a small team?

  Background: 3-5 developers supporting (and building new) internal applications for a non-software company. We use TFS although I don't think that matters much for my question. I want to be able to develop a deployment pipeline and adopt continuous integration / deployment techniques. Here's what our source tree looks like right now. We use a single TFS Team Project. $/MAIN/src/ $/MAIN/src/ApplicationA/VSSOlution.sln $/MAIN/src/ApplicationA/ApplicationAProject1.csproj $/MAIN/src/ApplicationA/ApplicationAProject2.csproj $/MAIN/src/ApplicationB/... $/MAIN/src/ApplicationC $/MAIN/src/SharedInfrastructureA $/MAIN/src/SharedInfrastructureB My Goal (a pretty typical promotion pipeline) When a code change is made to a given application I want to be able to build that application and auto-deploy that change to a DEV server. I may also need to build dependencies on Shared Infrastructure Components. I often also have some database scripts or changes as well If developer testing passes I want to have an manually triggered but automated deploy of that build on a STAGING server where end-users will review new functionality. Once it's approved by end users I want to a manually triggered auto-deploy to production Question: How can I best adopt continuous deployment techniques in a multi-application environment? A lot of the advice I see is more single-application-specific, how is that best applied to multiple applications? For step 1, do I simply setup a separate Team Build for each application? What's the best approach to accomplishing steps 2 and 3 of promoting latest build to new environments? I've seen this work well with web apps but what about database changes

• PostSharp deployment to build machine- use Setup installation, not NuGet package.

  PostSharp has well documented different methods of installation. I've chosen installing NuGet packages, because according to  Deploying PostSharp into a Source Repository NuGet is the easiest way to add PostSharp to a project without installing the product on every machine. However it didn't work well for me. I've added PostSharp NuGet package to one project in the solution.  When I wanted to use PostSharp in other project, Visual Studio tab showed that PostSharp is not enabled for this project I've added the NuGet package to the new project, which installed a new version of the package in the new Packages subfolder. When I wanted to refer PostSharp from the third project, I've ended up with another version of PostSharp installed. Additionally multiple versions of Diagnostics were created. It definitely causes confusion and errors.   More problems we experienced on build server. According to Using PostSharp on a Build Server "If you chose to deploy PostSharp in the source repository, it does not need to be installed specifically on the build server. " It didn't work on our build server. I kept getting errors "The "AddIns" parameter is not supported by the "PostSharp21" task." and "The "DisableSystemBindingPolicies" parameter is not supported by the "PostSharp21" task."   From my experience the only way to have the latest version of PostSharp working on the build server is to install it using Setup as described in Deploying PostSharp with the Setup Program     Gael acknowledged the issues with possible version conflicts. see http://support.sharpcrafters.com/discussions/problems/388-the-postsharp21-task-failed-unexpectedly

• When does a Project Manager start in a project?

  From a colleague of mine… “As a project manager, when do you typically like to get initially involved in the project? Is it better for the PM to be rolled on during the project kick-off, the first week, or is it better to roll-on the second week when things settle down?” My textbook answer is “the Project Manager is responsible for the successful completion and delivery of the expected outcome of the project through the following major tasks;” 1.    Identifying requirements 2.    Establishing clear and achievable objectives 3.    Balancing the competing demands for quality, scope, time, and cost 4.    Adapting the specifications, plans, and approach to the different concerns and expectations of the various stakeholders However; My colleague is often a lead technical consultant coming into a project alone to help a client solve a complex problem. As Magenic consultants, we all possess many of the “project managing” skills I talked about above and tend to be responsible for item #1 and #2 as well as the actual architecture/design tasks early in a project. When the real development begins and there is no PM involved, the project will quickly get harder to execute unless items #3 & #4 are assigned to a Project Manager. In software development, the concept of context switching between coding and other administrative activities is the hardest skill perfect. In my experience, I have rarely been introduced to someone who has mastered this skill. This is the limbo I was in when I was asked to become a PM -- while still developing. “Put down the code” was not only a profound statement, but looking back – a necessary one. Unless you are lucky to have found that one developer who is a superman, asking your developers (internal corporate or consultant) to perform #3 and #4 tasks, will surely take more time, allow opportunity for more scope, and eventually cost more. Project Managers are crucial to the overall success of a project, and I prefer them to start by taking ownership of delivery on day one.

• Plastic Clamshell Packaging Voted Worse Design Ever

  We’ve all been there: frustrated and trying free a new purchase from it’s plastic clamshell jail. You’re not alone, the packaging design has been voted the worst in history. In a poll at Quora, users voted on the absolute worst piece of design work they’d encountered. Overwhelmingly, they voted the annoying-to-open clamshell design to the top. The author of the top comment/entry, Anita Shillhorn writes: “Design should help solve problems” — clamshells are supposed to make it harder to steal small products and easier for employees to arrange on display — but this packaging, she says, makes new ones, such as time wasted, frustration, and the little nicks and scrapes people incur as they just try to get their damn lightbulb out. This is a product designed for the manufacturers and the retailers, not the end users.   I'm not sure if this fits on SO, but other SE sites don't seem to fit either, so I understand when this question gets moved, Although I'd like to avoid getting it closed due to being offtopics, since I think that this question might fit, considering this part of the FAQ: Stack Overflow is for professional and enthusiast programmers, ... covers … a specific programming problem ... matters that are unique to the programming profession Sorry for the lengthy Introduction, though. When Software is advertised, it is usually Software for one (or more) specific purpose, such as: Mozilla Firefox - A Web Browser Ubuntu - An Operating System Python - A Programming Language Visual Studio - A Development Studio ... And so on. But when writing Libraries, that is, Software that doesn't necessarily serve one specific purpose, but instead multiple purposes, which are usually supposed to be used inside an application, such as: Irrlicht - A 3D Engine Qt - An Application Framework ... The process of advertisement gets a little more difficult. I'm a developer of the latter kind of Software, and I naturally want to advertise my Software. It's not commercial Software; It's not GPL either. It's completely free (Licensed under the MIT License :-)). I naturally host my stuff at github, which technically makes it very easy to access the software, and I thought that these might be possible options, although I have no experience with them: Submit the Software to Freshmeat, and hope for the best Submit the Software to Sourceforge, and hope someone accidently stumbles over it Write spammails, and get death threats via Mail ... But something tells me that these methods are probably not the best Methods. So, my final question would be, How does the Average Joe Hobby Programmer advertise his/her Software Library?

• Run database checks but omit large tables or filegroups - New option in Ola Hallengren's Scripts

  One of the things I've always wanted in DBCC CHECKDB is the option to omit particular tables from the check. The situation that I often see is that companies with large databases often have only one or two very large tables. They want to run a DBCC CHECKDB on the database to check everything except those couple of tables due to time constraints. I posted a request on the Connect site about time some time ago: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/611164/dbcc-checkdb-omit-tables-option The workaround from the product team was that you could script out the checks that you did want to carry out, rather than omitting the ones that you didn't. I didn't overly like this as a workaround as clients often had a very large number of objects that they did want to check and only one or two that they didn't. I've always been impressed with the work that our buddy Ola Hallengren has done on his maintenance scripts. He pinged me recently about my old Connect item and said he was going to implement something similar. The good news is that it's available now.
