• Ubuntu 12.10 Unity & Gnome Shell problems

  I'm experiencing some problems since I decided to upgrade Ubuntu to 12.10 version two days ago. Firstly, I cannot select the Unity environment I previously used on 12.04 without opening the terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T and typing setsid unity. When I select the Unity environment on the account page when I start the computer, it automatically switch back to Gnome and launch my session. I tried to set back Unity using the setsid unity tip, and it worked fine. But after few minutes, everything freeze and I cannot control anything anymore. The only option left is to press the Power button of my Asus EeePC and switch everything off. Question 1 : What can I do to get my Unity environment back on 12.10 from the start, without using the terminal every time? What should I do to prevent the all system to freeze once done? Secondly, and since I cannot use Unity for new, I'm using an other interface, GNOME Shell. What's bothering me is that the Activities bar (let's call it like that, 'cause I don't know the proper name) and the Internet bar (or any bar from any other window) cannot merge into one another, reducing the display of the screen I'm actually using to peanuts! Question 2 : Is there a way to merge those two bars? Or is there a way to hide the Activities bar when I'm not using it like on Unity environment?

• Debian 5.0.8 won't detect my ethernet adapter

  I'm installing Debian 5.0.8 on a Dell Latitude E6410 using the network install x86 CD. Unfortunately, it won't detect my Ethernet adapter. Specifically, I get the error: No Ethernet card was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card, you can select it from the list. lspci shows: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Device 10ea (rev 05) That should correspond to the e100e driver. But, if I select it from the list, the install CD still fails to detect it. Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 are able to use this device with no problem. Does anybody know what I can do to make Debian use my Ethernet adapter? Thanks, PaulH

• Dynamic Query Generation : suggestion for better approaches

  I am currently designing a functionality in my Web Application where the verified user of the application can execute queries which he wishes to from the predefined set of queries with where clause varying as per user's choice. For example,Table ABC contains the following Template query called SecretReport "Select def as FOO, ghi as BAR from MNO where " SecretReport can have parameters XYZ, ILP. Again XYZ can have values as 1,2 and ILP can have 3,4 so if the user chooses ILP=3, he will get the result of the following query on his screen "Select def as FOO, ghi as BAR from MNO where ILP=3" Again the user is allowed permutations of XYZ / ILP My initial thought is that User will be shown a list of Report names and each report will have parameters and corresponding values. But this approach although technically simple does not appear intuitive. I would like to extend this functionality to a more generic level. Such that the user can choose a table and query based on his requirements. Of course we do not want the end user to take complete control of DB. But only tables and fields that are relevant to him. At present we are defining what is relevant in the code. But I want the Admin to take over this functionality such that he can decide what is relevant and expose the same to the user. On user's side it should be intuitive what is available to him and what queries he can form. Please share your thoughts what is the most user friendly way to provide this feature to the end user.

• Tomcat's connection pool opens only 20 connections to mysql

Still, use information_schema; select count(*) from processlist where User = 'user'; never shows me more than 20 connections.   I have a mysql db and I have an automation script which modifies the data inside once a day. And, these columns may have changed by an user manually. What is the best approach to make the system only update the automated data, not the manually edited ones? I mean yes, flagging the cell which is manually edited is one way to do it, but I want to know if there's another way to accomplish this? Just curiosity.

• Cannot create persistent "open with" association for Photoshop CS4

  I'm trying to fix a computer from a friend, which has for some unknonwn reason installed the 64bit and 32bit version of CS4. The 64bit version does not work, the 32bit does. However it seems that the 64bit version was the first installed one, associations to the .psd files are going to the 64bit version. There seems no way to create an association with only the 32bit version. When I select open with` and I browse to the 32bit version and select open, it does not get added to the list of applications? Update: Unfortunately the problem just went away. It's annoying as the root cause is likely never to be found, I'm accepting Fopedush's answer for this "detailness".

• Terminal command to change permissions to my 'Sites' folder and apply change to enclosed items?

  Using Snow Leopard, I'm having issues with permissions in my Sites folder. While I can navigate to localhost/~username and read any files or folders there, the same permissions have not been applied to enclosed items, and I get a 403 error trying to access them in the browser. If I select one of these enclosed folders and get info using Finder, I see the user 'Everyone' is set to 'No Access' but I can't change that (this behavior seems buggy, actually). And if I select my 'Sites' folder, the tool to 'Apply to enclosed items' is grayed out... Is there a Terminal command I can use to grant 'Read Only' access to my Sites folder, and all it contains, for the user 'Everyone'?

  I'm reading up on event sourcing and have a question regarding persistence. I can still have a DB with all entities, right? Or should the events be replayed every time the application is started to get the latest version of each entity in the memory? Seems like a waste on larger systems (as in large amount of data)? The point with event sourcing is that I can can replay the events to populate a data store if required? (or analyze the data)

• Why is this MySQL FULLTEXT query returning 0 rows when matching rows are present?

  I have a MySQL table with 200M rows which has a FULLTEXT index on two columns (Title,Body). When I do a simple FULLTEXT query in the default NATURAL LANGUAGE mode for some popular results (they'd return 2M+ rows), I'm getting zero rows back: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM itemsearch WHERE MATCH (Title, Body) AGAINST ('fubar'); But when I do a FULLTEXT query in BOOLEAN mode, I can see the rows in question do exist (I get 2M+ back, depending): SELECT COUNT(*) FROM itemsearch WHERE MATCH (Title, Body) AGAINST ('+fubar' IN BOOLEAN MODE); I have some queries which return ~500K rows which are working fine in either mode, so if it's result size related, it seems to crop up somewhere between 500K and a little north of 2M. I've tried playing with the various buffer size variables, to no avail. It's clearly not the 50% threshold, since we're not getting 100M rows back for any result. Any ideas?

• .NET XPath Returns No Results

  When using XPath in .NET one of the gotchas to be aware of is that all namespaces must be named, otherwise you’ll end up with no results. Default namespaces that are specified with xmlns alone still need to be recognized in the XPath query! Say I had a bit of XML like what is returned from the QueryService web service in Sharepoint: 1: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> 2: <ResponsePacket xmlns="urn:Microsoft.Search.Response"> 3: <Response> 4: <Range> 5: ... 6: <Results> 7: <Document xmlns="urn:Microsoft.Search.Response.Document" relevance="849"> 8: ...   When consuming and navigating this response with XPath it is necessary to name all namespaces. • Focusing and Selecting the Text in ASP.NET TextBox Controls

  When a browser displays the HTML sent from a web server it parses the received markup into a Document Object Model, or DOM, which models the markup as a hierarchical structure. Each element in the markup - the <form> element, <div> elements, <p> elements, <input> elements, and so on - are represented as a node in the DOM and can be programmatically accessed from client-side script. What's more, the nodes that make up the DOM have functions that can be called to perform certain behaviors; what functions are available depend on what type of element the node represents. One function common to most all node types is focus, which gives keyboard focus to the corresponding element. The focus function is commonly used in data entry forms, search pages, and login screens to put the user's keyboard cursor in a particular textbox when the web page loads so that the user can start typing in his search query or username without having to first click the textbox with his mouse. Another useful function is select, which is available for <input> and <textarea> elements and selects the contents of the textbox. • File permissions to run mysqld in chroot

  I'm trying to run mysqld inside chroot environment. Herez the situation. When I run mysqld as root, I can connect to my databases. But when I run mysql using init.d scripts, mysql gives me an error. $ mysql --user=root --password=password ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111) So I guess, I need to change file permissions of some files. But which ones? Oh and in case you are wondering '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' is owned by 'mysql' user. • Dual boot UEFI Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 (both 64 bits). W7 entry doesn't appear in GRUB

  After trying to install both OS during 2 days, I'm confused and getting mad... I have SSD 128 GB and HDD 500 GB both empty. My laptop is Asus K55VM. BIOS support UEFI. What I have done: Install new SSD (Samsung 830 128GB) Use GParted on liveCD to create new table of partitions (GPT) and create 3 partitions (in the SSD) for different purposes: Partition 1: 80 GB (w7); Partition 2: 30 GB (Ubuntu 12.04 -Just / -); Partition 3: 10 GB unused (for future extesion of the other partitions) Install Windows 7 (with UEFI) in Partition 1. This create: /dev/sda1 - 100 MB for System (UEFI boot I guess) - FAT32 /dev/sda2 - 100 MB aprox. for MSR /dev/sda3 - 79.800 MB aprox. for Windows7 data In this point everything works fine. I have W7. Now I install Ubuntu 12.04 amd64 (with UEFI) as follows: Install / in Partition 2 - /dev/sda4 30 GB ext4, and in the hdd I install /home and swap. I select bootloader in /dev/sda1 (where it's supposed to be the UEFI boot). I install updates and reboot. Problem: Now just appears grub menu with Ubuntu entries and not Windows 7. Alternative solution found: When I turn on laptop, before loading GRUB I press ESC key and appear BIOS boot, so I can select to boot the Windows partition, Ubuntu partition, DVD, USB, etc... but I think is not the best way to boot different OS. I've tried: sudo update-grub2 with no success. What can I do??

• Wine causes twin view to break

  I have endlessly been playing around with the Nvidia X Server settings and changing my xorg.conf file to try and work for me and on most days its fine. In each instance I get it working for a while and then this morning the most bizarre thing happens. The moment I open any type of Wine program (which never use to be a problem) my Twin View setup disappears and am left with mirrored displays. I try and change the settings in the Nvidia driver, but its not interested and the screens remain mirrored. I have a work around. Restart my pc...   Hi there, in MySQL5.1, is there a way to make one table accessible by two different names? I'm thinking about somethink like a symlink on linux filesystems. I know theres the CREATE VIEW myview AS SELECT * FrOM mytable thing, but I don't only need to SELECT from both names, but also delete etc ... You might ask why I want to do this? It's about getting a commercial, closed-source app to work, which is crappily programmed (usually, the table names are all lower-case, but occasionally, they use capitalized names for the same table ...). Oh, that would be another idea: Is there a way to tell MySQL not to care about capitalization of table names (like on Windows filesystems?)? that would also do the trick ... Thanks for your insight! • Wake-On-Lan - is it possible to access boot menu?

  Now imagine this situation. I have a computer which has 2 operating systems installed - Windows XP and Windows 7. On booting menu is displayed where I can select which operating system I want to load. When I do nothing, Windows 7 loads (after some delay). This computer is connected to LAN and has Wake-On-Lan function enabled. Is it possible to remotely select which operating system I wish to load? Now it is Windows 7. But sometimes I wish it would be Windows XP.

• How to copy windows explorer file selections and past filenames as txt

  Win7 How can I select multiple files in explorer and get a string of text listing the file names like i would get if i selected the files from within "open file" window of an application. for example if i have a Dir that contains 100 jpegs and i select 01.jpg, 05.jpg, 10.jpg in windows explore via ctrl+clicks or shift+click how can i get a text string that reads " "01.jpg" "05.jpg" "10.jpg" with or without the selected files full path " with out dragging the selected files to another window? I've tried copy and pasting into Note Pad and Word Pad and it either past the picts into the the application or a empty clipboard.

• Ubuntu 12.04 issue installing Webmin modules (file does not exist)

  I'm running ubuntu 12.04. On this machine I have Webmin 1.580 installed. When trying to add a new module to Webmin I receive an error: "Failed to install module from : File does not exist" This happens when i go to Webmin Configuration Webmin Modules Select "Third party module from" Select "OpenVPN admin tool" and clicking on install module After I selected "OpenVPN admin tool" this url is being added: http://www.openit.it/downloads/OpenVPNadmin/openvpn-2.5.wbm.gz This URL resolves to a correct file. When uploading the file directly, the same error occurs. In the log file: /var/webmin/webmin.log nothing special is reported. How can I fix this issue? P.s. I run this server in CLI mode
