  • is it possible to get a programming job in the bay area?

    - by user475119
Is it my perception or is it reality that it is harder to get software development work in Silicon Valley, than in other population centers? My theory is that some of the best and brightest (and youngest) are all here. All working for the top tech companies. And, little ol' me, over 40, math degree (not at Standford or Berkeley), ok at algorithms, and with many skills with many programming tools and concepts, but not published, and not top my class has a bit of a tough time competing. (I'm a Python programmer, by the way.) Thanks

  • Thumbnail preview rotator on mouse-over HOW IS THAT CALLED?

    - by Gerben
I've been searching for hours now but can't get any tutorial on this. I have these thumbnails on my homepage which are the first images of their corresponding posts. What I want is that when I mouse-over a post on the homepage... the corresponding thumbnail should also show/rotate the other images of that particular post... bit like a sneak-peak image rotator... Does anyone know where I can get a tutorial regarding this? How's this called? It seems like I'm searching for the wrong keywords on google as I can't find anything.

  • Performance impact of not implementing relationships at the database level?

    - by JVerstry
Let's imagine a data model with customers and invoices. There is a 1 to n relationship between a customer and its invoices. We uses an ORM (like Hibernate). One can explicitely implement the 1-n relationship (using JPA for example) or not. If not, then one must do a bit more work to fetch invoices. However, it is much easier to maintain, improve and develop the data model of applications where relationships between objects are not explicitely implemented in the database. My question is, has anyone noticed a significant performance impact when not implementing the relationships in the database?

  • Continue with Java for pc or go to android? [on hold]

    - by Chris London
so I have been learning java from Deitel's learn java 9th edition. I am up to GUI's and a have a pretty good grasp on OOP etc. I want to go straight to the mobile app development scene, I believe I will learn a fair bit there on using API's, and other tools to develop apps. I am not sure weather I should carry on with PC coding (GUI's etc etc) or skip it all and go direct to learning the Android SDK. So, should I carry on, learn about sockets, writing and reading files, GUI's for PC etc or get a book and jump into android? Thanks a lot guys.

  • Launch Specific OEPE Workspace from the Start Menu

    - by user647124
I frequently have multiple Eclipse-based projects running simultaneously, sometimes on different versions of Eclipse. I have made a mess of a few workspaces by accidentally opening them in the wrong version of Eclipse. To thwart my own forgetfulness, I went seeking a way to launch directly to a workspace and found it at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/209789/starting-eclipse-w-specific-workspace. Essentially, add the -data switch to your icon's open command, such as: C:\eclipse\eclipse.exe -data E:\MyData\Clients\Confidential\EclipseGCDPGive it a unique name and stick it on your Start Menu (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu). Makes my life a bit easier and hopefully yours, too.

  • Is there an equivalent of RDP?

    - by detly
The "Desktop Sharing" settings that come installed by default seem to use VNC. VNC is a bit of a bandwidth hog, can only work at the resolution of whatever screen is attached to the host, and mirrors every action on the host. (It also seems to work poorly with compositing, but maybe that's been fixed.) I know about X tunnelling, but that's annoying to use and doesn't always work properly (or, more accurately, some apps don't work properly). Is there any kind of protocol in between the two, similar to RDP used for Windows? Specifically, something that can run at a different resolution to the host screen and is a little lighter on the network? (Ideally, the more the protocol could have in common with RDP, the better.)

  • VS2010 tip: Cannot find the HttpUtility on .NET 4.0?

Now that Visual Studio 2010 is here with more options and better colors, there are a few things that have changed a little and might confused you a bit. For example the good HttpUtility, if you are creating a Windows Console application or a Windows Service and you want to use that awesome class full of goodies, you would try to go to reference and add System.Web.dll, yet in the list that dll will be missing. So did they removed that dll in .NET 4? Not really, still there however there are not profiles...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • function names - "standartised" prefixes

    - by dnsmkl
Imagine you have such routines /*just do X. Fail if any precondition is not met*/ doX() /*take care of preconditions and then do X*/ takeCareOfPreconditionsCheckIfNeededAtAllAndThenDoX() A little bit more concrete example: /*create directory. Most probably fail with error if any precondition is not met (folder already exists, parent does not exists)*/ createDirectory(path_name) /*take care of preconditions (creates full path till folder if needed, checks if not exists yet) and then creates the directory*/ CheckIfNotExistsYet_CreateDirectory_andFullPathIfNeeded(path_name) How do you name such routines, so it would be clear what does what? I have come to some my own "convetion" like: naiveCreateDirectory, ForceDirectoryExists, ... But I imagine this is very standard situation. Maybe there already exists some norms/convetions for this?

  • Book suggestions for GUI related topics [closed]

    - by asrijaal
In the past, I've developed more on the server side, so no big GUI/graphic programming topics have crossed my way so far. I'm switching a little bit to the mobile plattforms (iOS, android) and would like to gather more info on the visual/graphic side. Using the SDK controls/widgets isn't that challenging and I would love to get deeper into the view/presentation layer. Animations, drawing itself, probably OpenGL. Any books that would take me a little deeper in understanding how drawing actually works would be helpful.

  • XNA Monogame GameState Management not deserilaizing

    - by Pectus Excavatum
I am having some trouble serializing/deserializing in a little game I am doing to teach myself monogame. Basically, I am using the gamestatemnanagement resources common to monogame (screen manager etc). Then I am serializing my screen manager component and all associated screens in the OnDeactivated method: protected override void OnDeactivated(Object sender, EventArgs args) { foreach (GameplayScreen screen in mScreenManager.GetScreens()) { DataManager.SaveData(screen.Level.LevelData); } mScreenManager.SerializeState(); } The Save data bit is to do with something else. Then I then override OnActivated to de serialize protected override void OnActivated(Object sender, EventArgs args) { //System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("here activating"); mScreenManager.DeserializeState(); } However, when this runs it just loads a blank screen - it goes into the game initialize and the game draw method, but doesnt go down into the screens initialize or draw methods. I have no idea why this might be - any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not the only one who has encountered this - I found this post also - https://monogame.codeplex.com/discussions/391117

  • What is important when starting GUI programming, and pick from widget libraries [closed]

    - by jokester
I have been a CLI programmer, and recently I found it will be a plus to learn GUI programming. In past, my experience and knowlegde was a bit messy. So you may imagine many detour were there in my way, that is true. And I want to avoid getting lost again if possible. When googling about existing GUI framework, I found it is hard to choose my start point from GTK, QT, and lot of less famous peers. What are important factors when you guys are facing that problem? Will it be a good idea to pick a small enough library and feel its fundamental ideas?

  • Implementing Command Pattern in Web Application

    - by KingOfHypocrites
I'm looking to implement the command pattern in a web application (asp.net c#)... Since the commands come in text format from the client, what is the best way to translate the string to a command object? Should I use reflection? Currently I just assume the command that comes in matches the file name of a user control. This is a bit of a hack. Rather than have a select case statement that says if string = "Dashboard" then call Dashboard.Execute(), is there a pattern for working with commands that originate as strings?

  • Strategy for image sizes

    - by MotiveKyle
I run a site that has a lot of writers that generate quite a few articles a day. I require them to provide two image sizes (one for the big headline image and one as the thumbnail). I've been wanting to change up the site layout a bit, but I am becoming limited by the image sizes for the posts. I have considered just cropping images, but they still need to look nice, and cropping doesn't always generate what I'd want. I'd prefer to just scale down by percentage (as I do with thumbnails). Should I just make the writers provide more images? How do other sites handle this?

  • Progressbar patterns (Eclipse)

    - by JesperE
I've struggled quite a bit with Eclipse and progress-monitors to try to have good progressbars which report useful progress information to the user. Inevitably the code gets cluttered with lots of things like if (monitor.isCancelled()) return; ... lengthyMethodCall(monitor.newChild(10)); and all over the place I need to pass a IProgressMonitor as an argument to my methods. This is bad, for several reasons: The code gets cluttered with lots of code which is not relevant to what the function actually does. I need to manually guesstimate which parts of the code takes time, and which parts do not. It interacts badly with automated tests; where much of the information which goes into a progressbar instead should be logged for later inspection. Is there a way out of this? Are there tools which can help me out with one or more of these problems? Should I be looking at Aspect-Oriented Programming tools, or are there other alternatives?

Improvements throughout! The top five WebKit browsers according to these tests are now: Chrome 5 Safari 5 Safari 4 Samsung WebKit (on bada) Android 2.1Interesting findings: Chrome and Android now support localStorage (Safari already did). Chrome and Android now support geolocation. Safari does in theory, but it doesn’t give the actual coordinates, making the whole exercise a bit pointless. • After reinstalling ATI graphics drivers, my keyboard and mouse aren't working anymore

    - by Lifelike27
On Ubuntu 11.04 I tried to install the open source drivers for my laptops ATI Mobility Radeon 5470M but I messed that up a bit and lost xserver. Now I've managed to solve that problem with this and by downloading the ATI proprietary drivers and install those manually. Now, when Ubuntu loads up I get to the login screen but I can't use my mouse or my keyboard (usb keyboard and mouse doesn't work either). If I use the recovery console, then login with that and then run 'startx'. I can login fine (though Unity doesn't show, the graphics seem to be working because it shows the fading animation of libnotify), but I can't type or move my mouse.

  • Java Error Using Loops [migrated]

    - by Shaun
I am facing a error in Java using the method Loops. I am a basic user learning Java and I am following a book with teaches you the basics of Java. I have this problem when I use this code in my Java Program. It gives me an red line under my code. Here's my code: public class Game{ public static void main(String[] args){ for (int dex = 0; dex < 1000; dex++) { if (dex % 12 == 0) { System.out.println(“#: “ + dex); } } } } I have been following the tutorials correctly. I am a bit lost where I have gone or done wrong. I have my public static codes and such as you'd require in any Java programming. Here's are the error given): Cannot resolve method: 'Println(? , ?)' • Shifting from XNA/C# to C++?

    - by Fat_Scout
For a while now, I've been working with XNA for game design and development (although only for personal use ATM.) Overall, I'm a major fan of XNA itself, and it's overall "feel." However, due to the fact that: XNA seems to have a lack of support (no Metro support, no updates since 2010, etc.) I plan to try and get a job in the game development industry, and due to C++'s dominance, being more familiar with it would be very useful XNA only supports Windows (non-Metro) and Xbox 360, while I am interested in Mac and (to a lesser extent) Linux support. I've been trying to shift over to C++ as my main language. However, I do not want to focus on learning raw DirectX/C++ at this time, so I've been looking for a higher level C++ API (something about the same level as XNA, although something a bit more low-level would be fine) with a feel similar to XNA. So, for someone switching from C#/XNA to C++, what would my best choice(s) be for API's similar to XNA, although unmanaged and running on C++?

  • Programming C++ using Qt4

    - by DaGhostman Dimitrov
Hey guys I am really new to the C++ programing I have a little knowledge in C and a bit more in C++, but I do not know them enough to call myself a programmer. I am working as a PHP Web Developer I like being a crafts man and creating things so that is the reason to combine the programming with web development. I think that I could really benefit from both of them and so... My question is: Is it a good Idea to learn C++ with Qt or not? Can you give me pros and cons of both? Note: I do not want to become a programmer and give up the web development I want to combine them both.

  • First and Follow Sets for a Grammar

    - by Aimee Jones
    I'm studying for a Compiler Construction module I'm doing and I have a sample question as follows: Calculate the FIRST and FOLLOW sets for the following grammar.. S -> uBDz B -> Bv B -> w D -> EF E -> y E -> e F -> x F -> e I have tried to figure it out so far but I'm a bit unsure if I'm correct. Could someone verify if I'm doing it right, and if not, what am I missing? My answer is below: FIRST | FOLLOW S | {u} | {$} B | {w} | {y,x,v,z} D | {y,e,x} | {z} E | {y,e} | {x,z} F | {x,e} | {z}

  • Ways to prevent client seeing my code

    - by James Eggers
I've got a bit of a strange problem.. Basically, I'm building a fairly complex (un-compiled, interpreted) program in Python. I've been working on most of this code for other purposes for a few months, and therefore don't want my client to be able to simple copy and paste it and then try and sell it (it's worth a fair amount). The other problem is that I need the script to run on a server that my client is paying for. Is there any way I can secure a particular folder on the machine from root access, make it so only one particular can access the directory? The OS is Ubuntu.

  • infer half vector length in BRDF

    - by cician
it's my first question on stack. Is it possible to infer length of the half angle vector for specular lighting from N·L and N·V without the whole view and light vectors? I may be completely off-track, but I have this gut feeling it's possible... Why? I'm working on a skin shader and I'm already doing one texture lookup with N·L+N·E and one texture lookup for specular with N·H+N·V. The latter one can be transformed into N·L+N·E lookup if only I had the half vector length. Doing so could simplify the shader a bit and move some operations into the pre-computed lookup texture. It would make a huge difference since I'm trying to squeeze as much functionality as possible to a single pass mobile version so instruction count matters. Thanks.
