• After installing Windows XP I can't boot into Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  I know that this issue may have been happened to many people and answered many times. For some reason, I had to install Windows XP beside Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Once I did that, I'm no longer able to log on to my Ubuntu. The booting list screen doesn't show up. I tried some ways to fix that, one was to try Boot Repair (of course after opening Ubuntu live from a USB), however, the program didn't open after the installation had finished !! So how can I fix that? I hope you guys stick a little with my problem until it is solved

• frequency out of range - please change display mode

  I just downloaded the latest version of the Ubuntu live CD, and have installed it on a desktop computer (a Fujitsu Scaleo P). Once installed it seems to work perfectly, although there are some updates recommended in the Update Manager. My problem is that, after having installed these updates and restarted the computer, I get this message on my monitor, and no Ubuntu interface is visible: frequency out of range - please change display mode I do not know how to change this when I can't access an interface. Is there a command that will bypass trying to boot the GUI and let me change the display mode via a CLI? I am brand new to Ubuntu and any help on this would be much appreciated.

• Domain in PENDINGDELETE, question about drop

  A domain I want is in the pendingDelete stage according to WHOIS. I have been monitoring it since redemptionPeriod, and it entered into pendingDelete 5 days ago today. After checking a few services (SnapNames, etc), they report it is scheduled to drop on the 11th (7 days, by my calculations). I'm not quite sure what to believe. The domain isn't highly valuable. It is to me and one other company. I can see no backorders placed on the big name sites, so I'm thinking of trying to get it without a backorder service. Any insight as to when it will actually drop? I've read 11AM-2PM PST, but I'm unsure. Thanks.

  I formatted all of my disk and installed Ubuntu on my computer. I immediately partitioned, from an Ubuntu live CD, my hard drive, creating an NTFS partition for for Windows. After successfully doing so, I went on to install windows 8.1. After I installed Windows 8 in the new partition and turned off my PC and turned it on again the option to chose which Operating system I wanted to use didn't appear, loading Windows like if Ubuntu didn't exist. How can I have the option to chose which operating system I want to run or at least from which partition to boot from when I start my computer? EVERYTHING IS OKAY WITH MY OPERATING SYSTEM The only thing I need is for ubuntu to appear as an option on the boot menus

• Is it possible to make the desktop background transparent or otherwise hidden?

  I'm running Ubuntu in a virtual machine via VirtualBox. I have the seamless mode turned on, which is pretty cool. However, if I move an Ubuntu window around quickly, I can see the redraw of the ubuntu background quickly before it's hidden by VirtualBox again. This isn't a huge deal, but I'd like to fix it, if possible. I see two possible options that don't involve changing VirtualBox code: 1. Make the Ubuntu desktop transparent 2. Make the Ubuntu desktop hidden entirely Is it possible to do either? I know that Compiz Fusion has/had a feature to do this for their cube effects, but I don't think that I can run this on the VM. And, even if I could, I don't want to run those services for this one small feature.

• Ubuntu will not start any more !!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP?

  I really need help , I left my computer downloading all the night and i did donwload 35 go of movies ( legal ....) , I restart the computed in the morning then i booted in my encrypted windows partition for my work. Surprise in the evening when i try to boot on linux again , then it doesnt start as it's telling me low graphic mode , and doesnt boot( happen when it's really full ) . Tryed in rescue and it's telling me i have 0 mo free. Tryed in shell comand sdo root rm - Some files IMPOSSIBLE . it's telling me that my files are only in read only file systems. I mouted my other hard drive in windows as well but there is a '' Write protection '' i can only read the files. Please let me know , what solution do i have ? Should i try live usb with ubuntu ? Thanks guys

  When you create a sand boxed solution for SharePoint 2010 in Visual Studio 2010 and try to deploy the solution , you could get the error “Error occurred in deployment step ‘Retract Solution’: Cannot start service SPUserCodeV4 on computer”(See the Picture1 below). In order to fix this , you need to go to Central Administration -> System Settings -> Manage services on server and start service “Microsoft SharePoint Foundation User Code Service” If you are developing SharePoint on DC(Domain controller),you need to check the solution from my previous post. So here’s how I came to that figure. Total Revenue Let’s talk total revenue first. This conference has a huge list of companies/organizations paying some amount for sponsorship. Platinum ($1500) x 5 = $7500 Gold ($1000) x 3 = $3000 Silver ($500) x 9 = $4500 Bronze ($250) x 13 = $3250 There’s also a title sponsor level but there’s no mention of how much that is…more than $1500 though, so let’s just say $2500. Total Sponsorship Revenue: $20750.00 For registrations, this conference is claiming over 300 attendees. We’ll just calculate at 300 and the discounted “member rate” – $249. Total Registration Revenue: $74700.00 Booth space is also sold for a vendor area, but let’s just leave that out of the calculation. Total Event Revenue: $95450.00 Now that we know how much money we’re playing with, let’s knock out the costs for the event. Total Costs Hard Costs Audio/Visual Services $2000 Conference Rooms (4 Breakouts + Plenary) $2500 Insurance $700 Printing/Signage $1500 Travel/Hotel Rooms $2000 Keynotes $2000 So let’s talk about these hard costs first. First you may be asking about the Audio Visual. Yes those services can be that high, actually higher. But since there’s an A/V company touted as the official A/V provider, I gotta think there’s some discount for being branded as such. Conference rooms are actually an inflated amount of $500 per. Venues make money on the food they sell at events, not on room rentals. The more food, the cheaper the rooms tend to be offered at. Still, for the sake of argument, let’s set the rooms at $500 each knowing that they could be lower. For travel and hotel rooms…it appears that most of the speakers at this conference are local, meaning there’s no travel or hotel cost. But a few of them I wasn’t too sure…so let’s factor in enough to cover two outside speakers (airfare and hotel). There are two keynotes for this event and depending on the event those may be paid gigs. I’m not sure if they are or not, but considering the closing one is a comedian I’m going to add some funds here for that just in case. Total Hard Costs: $10700 Now that the hard costs are out of the way, let’s talk about the food costs. Food Costs The conference is providing a continental breakfast (YEEEESH!), some level of luncheon, and I have to assume coffee breaks in between. Let’s look at those costs. Continental Breakfast $12 per person Lunch Buffet $18 per person Coffee Breaks (2) $6 per person (or $3 a cup) Snacks (2) $10 per person (or $5 each) Note that the lunch buffet assumes a *good* lunch buffet – two entrees, starch, vegetable, salads, and bread. Not sure if there’ll be snacks during coffee breaks but let’s assume so. Total Food Cost Per Person: $46 Food Cost: $14950 Gratuity: $2691 Total Food Cost: $17641 Total food cost is based on the $46 per person cost x 325. 300 for attendance, 12 for speakers, extra 13 for volunteers/organizers. Gratuity is 18%. Grand Totals So let’s sum things up here. Total Costs Hard Costs: $10700.00 Food Costs: $17641.00 Total:          $28341.00 Taxes:         $3685.00 Grand Total  $32026.00 Total Revenue Sponsorship  $20750 Registration   $74700 Grand Total   $95450.00 Total Profit $63424.00 Now what if the registration numbers were lower and they only got 100 people to show up. In that scenario there’d still be a profit of just under $26000. Closing Comments A couple of things to note: - I haven’t factored in anything for prizes. Not sure if any will be given out - We didn’t add in the booth space revenue - We’re assuming speakers aren’t getting paid, but even if they were at the high end its $12000 ($1000 per session), which is probably an inflated number for local speakers. - Note that all registrations were set to the “member” discounted price. The non-member registration price is higher. There is also an option for those that just want to show up for the opening keynote. There you have it! Let me know if you have any questions. D

• Computer won't wake from hibernate

  So I have a pretty dumb problem...I accidentaly pressed Hibernate while trying to Restart...since then my computer wont boot into Ubuntu anymore (through normal mode or single user mode - rescue mode that is)...all I get is: mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /sys/ on root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or dirctory Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= boot arg. BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) Obviously I tried to fire up the Live CD and run fsck (or e2fsck) from there (or just try to do a Check of /dev/sdb1 my partition via gparted - which is basically the same thing). But it doesn't allow me...both gparted and fsck say that the device is busy (I can't even mount it in the LiveCD to rescue data)...umount /dev/sdb1 says its not mounted...any ideas?

• System checks for disk drive error every time it boots

  When my disk space for the ubuntu installation partition was getting low, from a live cd, I used gparted to increase its volume capacity, but deleting another partition and merging it to the ubuntu partition. Since then onwards, I am receiving disk checking for errors at boot screen for my partitions, always. What seem to be causing this and how to fix it? Update Here is my boot.log if it provides few insight fsck from util-linux 2.19.1 fsck from util-linux 2.19.1 /dev/sda1 was not cleanly unmounted, check forced. ubuntu: clean, 501325/1310720 files, 2958455/5242880 blocks /dev/sda1: 241/51272 files (3.3% non-contiguous), 73541/102400 blocks mountall: fsck /boot [358] terminated with status 1 Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox ... /dev/sda1 is a separate grub partition for my dual OS's

  Over the last year or so I've been visiting customers who have had Exadata deployed and have been enjoying the benefits the platform has been providing. Benefits include greater performance, consolidating multiple databases, data compression and time to value improvements. Most often I hear my reports run faster. One hospitality company report times that used to take 3 hrs now run in 12 seconds. Another services company reported all their batch reports taking 11hrs now run in 38 mins. Also reported that their transactions post faster, and batch updates run faster. So what does that mean? For most of them it means that now they have a platform that can handle growth. Most are growing 15% organically, but I've also seen 40% growth thru acquisition. Exadata has been keeping up with the additional data demand by customers leveraging compression and the smart storage features.

• What is the standard way of delivering HTML5 games to portals and such?

  Let me explain what I mean by "standard way of delivering"... Think about Flash games sites. Flash games can be delivered as a single file, either hosted by the site, or, I guess, provided by someone else. HTML5 games, on the other hand, don't have something so standard. Usually, they have their own page, and portals just link to that page. I think that it greatly hinders the purpose of that portal, because, well, you want people to stay on your site and look for other games. Now, I think that a some kind of iframe way of delivering games would help solve this problem greatly. I saw some games doing that, and they were often included on tutorial sites to show a live example, which is obviously a great thing. So, is there a standard at all? Any suggestions? Can you create a game that just preloads itself in an iframe (I heard something about a "single document" or something)?

  I'm creating a project on codeplex that uses Amazon Web Services and the AWS SDK for .NET Which licenses can I use? The SDK is released under Apache 2.0 license, so I assume my project can or should use the same. If I add another open source library released under a different license, do I need to find a license that is 'compatible' with both ie. one that has the same requirements for derivative works? My requirement is for a license that allows me to publish a derivative work from the AWS .NET SDK.   I want to run diskless booting with PXE. The gotchas at the end of the Diskless-Howto[1] is quite long. I am unsure how to get this done. Here are my current possible solutions: use debian live and not ubuntu use aufs [2] The How-To states "confirmed to work with Ubuntu 12.04.". But maybe I am doing something wrong, I don't think it works this way for several diskless clients sharing one nfsroot. What is the most painless way to get diskless workstations?
