• Java SE 7u10: Enhanced Security Features and Support for New Platforms

  On December 11, 2012 Oracle released Java SE 7 Update 10 (Java SE 7u10). This release includes enhanced security features and support for new platforms. Enhanced Security Features The JDK 7u10 release includes the following security enhancements: The ability to disable any Java application from running in the browser. This mode can be set in the Java Control Panel or (on Microsoft Windows platform only) using a command-line install argument. The ability to select the desired level of security for unsigned applets, Java Web Start applications, and embedded JavaFX applications that run in a browser. Four levels of security are supported. This feature can be set in the Java Control Panel or (on Microsoft Windows platform only) using a command-line install argument. New dialogs to warn you when the JRE is insecure (either expired or below the security baseline) and needs to be updated. • Future of WPF and free controls ? [closed]

  I am willing to work on a personal project that I would like to release publicly. I am working with Silverlight and have experience with XAML, as it is my full-time job. It is enjoyably for me to create UIs in Blend and XAML. I am also a big fan of C# language. I don't know what I would do without LINQ now. Anyways, I was looking at using WPF for my personal project. It seems that a lot of the controls out on the web are pay for items. The only place I have found to have a significant number of free controls is the WPF extended framework on codeplex. I want to make a financial application and need a powerful datagrid type of control that will allow me to enter transaction data. I haven't found such control for free in the net. It doesn't seem like there is much free community libraries/controls out there for Microsoft products. So, I was wondering if WPF would be the right way for me to go. I couldn't find any information on WPF usage in Windows 8, which coming very soon. I don't know Microsoft's plans for this technology. Would it be a better idea to use something different for the UI instead of WPF?

• Window decoration of emacs23 window on fluxbox is outside screen

  I am starting emacs remotely over an ssh connection. But on the emacs window I cannot find a way to resize or move it. There is no fluxbox title bar visible, and I guess the title bar is above the visible viewport, because emacs starts vertically with more height than the screen has. The lower border of the emacs window is also below the viewport border, so I cannot resize the window.   I have tried installing age of empires 2 using PlayOnLinux, the installation appeared to go fine but when I try and open the game it says there is a serious fault. • Ops Center 12.1.4 Released

  Ops Center version 12.1.4.0.0, an update for 12c, has just been released. There are a few new features. The biggest one is support for multiple Automated Installer install services, which means that you can provision any version of Oracle Solaris 11, rather than just one. We've also added support for multi-file VM templates, and enhanced the network configuration support for vServers. You can take a look at the What's New document for more information about the new features. If you're already using Ops Center, you can download the 12.1.4 upgrade through the UI, or get it from the Oracle Tech Network or from e-delivery. The Upgrade chapter in the Admin Guide explains how to perform the upgrade.

• Remote synchronization

  Hi all, today we would like to show you another improvement we have prepared for NetBeans 7.2. Today, let's talk a little bit about remote synchronization. If you already use our simple (S)FTP client, this enhancement could be useful for you. Simply right click on Source Files and select Synchronize. Please notice that the remote synchronization works better only on the whole project (it means that the Source Files must be selected). The Synchronize action is also available on individual files (more files can be selected at once) but the suggested operation (download, upload etc.) does not work so precisely. Also please notice that the suggested operations are not 100% reliable since the timestamps provided by FTP servers are not exact. Once the remote files (their names and paths only, of course) are fetched, the main dialog appears: As you can see, NetBeans tries to suggest you operations (upload, download etc.) which should be done for each individual file of your project. If you are interested only in some particular changes, you can simply filter the list: Since we have a file conflict, we need to resolve it first. Fortunately this is very easy because we just select the desired file and click the Diff button . The remote version of our file is downloaded and compared with the local version. The resut is displayed in the dialog where you can easily apply and/or refuse the remote changes or even simply type manually to the local version of the selected file: Once we are done with our changes, the operation for the selected file changes to Upload and the file is marked with * (since we made some changes). Please notice that if you now click the Cancel button, in fact no changes are done in our local file. As you can see, if we have one or more files selected, we can change their operation to: no operation (file won't be synchronized) download upload delete (both local and remote file) reset (the operation is resetted to the original one suggested by NetBeans and also all changes done via Diff action are discarded) Now we are ready to synchronize our project. NetBeans will show us the synchronization summary (this dialog can be omitted, see the Show Summary checkbox on the previous image). The synchronization itself starts and we can see its progress and of course its result. As always, all the operations can be reviewed in the Output window. That's all for today, as always, please test it and report all the issues or enhancements you find in NetBeans BugZilla (component php, subcomponent FTP support).

  For those who are not familiar with this add-in, the OLAP PivotTable Extensions add features of interest to Excel 2007 or 2010 PivotTables pointing to an OLAP cube in Analysis Services. One of these features I like very much, is to know the MDX query code associated with the pivot used at that time in Excel: You can find all the details here: http://olappivottableextend.codeplex.com/ It was recently released a new version of the add-in (version 0.7.4), which does not introduce any new features, but fixes a significant bug: Release 0.7.4 now properly handles languages but introduces no new features. International users who run a different Windows language than their Excel UI language may be receiving an error message when they double click a cell and perform drillthrough which reads: "XML for Analysis parser: The LocaleIdentifier property is not overwritable and cannot be assigned a new value". • Does concurrency inherently introduce "randomness" into a game?

  When a game is implemented with concurrency (as most games are), does this necessarily, by its very nature, introduce an element of randomness into the game that is outside of the players' control? Note that when I use the word "random", I'm not meaning to launch into a philosophical debate about the deterministic nature of the system. I understand that concurrency is deterministic in the sense that the operating system decides which processes to allow time on the CPU and in what order (or the JVM controls which Thread's turn it is to execute, etc). But my understanding of this is that there is no way to control or predict whether one thread's next command will execute before or after another. The reason I'm asking is because this seems like a fundamental difficulty for game development where a game is supposedly designed around a player's skill. Consider a game like League of Legends. Assume that two players are battling it out. It's a very close contest between the two and it's coming down to the wire -- so much so that whoever gets their last attack off will be the one to kill the other and win the game for their team. If the players are implemented using concurrency and the situation really was like this, is it essentially out of the players' hands at this point? Is the outcome of this match all up to whatever system is arbitrarily deciding which player's thread/process will execute next? If not, what am I misunderstanding about concurrency? If so, is there any way around this problem so that a game of skill can always be a game of skill, especially in those most crucial moments?

• Unity Dash to search only in Documents

  I have a document (LibreOffice Calc Spreadsheet) which is in my ~/Documents folder. However, I have the same file (older version of it) on a mounted drive. In the past few weeks I have opened the file from both my ~/Documents folder and from the mounted drive. However, the latest version is the one from ~/Documents. When I open the Dash and look in the documents lens, of course I will find my file twice there. One from the mounted disk and one from ~/Documents. But I don't know which one is which. So, my question is: How can I limit the document lens to look for documents only from my /home. Or to exclude mounted disks from the search. Thanks. I use Ubuntu 12.04.

  Hi, Does anybody know how to remove an ActiveX control from Internet Explorer 7.0 ? I had been deleting and adding this control numerous times using the built in delete button in Tools, Manage Add-ons, Enable or Disable. This is required for me to test a downloader ActiveX used for a website. It had always shown up in the "Downloaded ActiveX Controls (32 bit) section of the drop down which activates the delete button. However, all of a sudden it now appears under "Add ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" and I cannot delete it from there. The "in folder" column says it's in the C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files folder... But it does not appear to be there either... Thanks, James

• How to deal with D3DX .dll hell?

  There's a large number of versions of the D3DX dll, from each SDK update, each version having a unique name (http://www.toymaker.info/Games/html/d3dx_dlls.html). All-too-often, people have versions missing. So even though they have a compatible version of DirectX, your D3D-based project won't run on their machine. I want to be able to distribute games (little spare-time projects, game jam entries, etc) as a simple zip file, without the need for an installer. But a significant percentage of users run into missing D3DX .dll errors. And without an installer, Microsoft's official solution (the DirectX web installer/updater) isn't really much of a solution. Unfortunately, Microsoft still won't give us the option of static linking to D3DX (which would be a nice clean solution). And avoiding using D3DX isn't very practical, especially if you're working with shaders (and no, I'm not switching to OpenGL, at least for now) Does anyone have clever solutions to avoiding this DLL hell?

  How can I install Disastry's version of PGP 2.6.3ia-multi06 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS? His site with the source code is here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/disastry/263multi.htm He already compiled a unix version of pgp and it's in the Linux section of his download. How can I either copy and install the binary PGP file, or compile it from the source and install. I have tried several different ways, get no error messages, but when I type pgp -h at the command line, Ubuntu tells me that pgp is not installed. (I already have truecrypt 7.1a and gnupg 1.4.16 installed, but still like the old pgp I have on windows) Thanks! traveler

  I have a X-ONE W-601 desktop pc: 3,1GHz AMD QuadCore Athlon II 645 X4 8 GB DDR3 RAM 1000 GB Harddisk 7200RPM ATI Radeon HD5750 with 1GB DDR5 RAM I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit and have installed the proprietary driver, but still games lag and videos a little bit. Been googling around and seen that it has something to do with the older drivers from AMD and KMS, but no guide helped me correctly through to make my graphic card work smoothly. • Can not connect to wireless on 12.04 with Intel WiFi Link 5100

  I am having problem in connecting to wifi. I have dual boot (Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04) on my Dell Studio 15. I upgraded to 12.04 quite some time ago (at least one month) from 11.10. Everything was working fine till yesterday. Since yesterday I can see the list of available Wifi connection but does not connect to any or if connects (after hours of trying) then disconnects after few minutes. My wifi interface is Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN. However the problem is on both Windows and Ubuntu.
