• Need opinions on LaTeX and ever upgrading

  Hi, I've been using LaTeX since 2005 with the TeXLive distribution and I've been upgrading as each new TeXLive distribution comes out. In the recent years I noticed an increase in new packages, updated packages and in one instance a new package bearing a different name replacing an old one by the same package author. A LaTeX document which relies heavily on packages and which has been produced a few years back may start to get some warnings and error messages on present-day LaTeX compilation. The primary reason I switched to LaTeX is because of its reliability and robustness to create big documents easily, not to mention the adorable typographic quality. With LaTeX one doesn't have to worry about how to open a docx in an old program supporting only doc for instance. Now, when there are so much continual changes in the packages in a LaTeX distribution, I tend to wonder when will this madness end. Not that having enhanced and new features are bad in packages, but not all updated packages are backward compatible. Eventually one would like to be able to compile a LaTeX file in 10 years time that he/she is working on at present and not get any compilation warnings/error messages due to some unpredictable behavior of updated packages or due to a package that has been cast-off from a LaTeX distribution. If I understand correctly CTAN do keep a database with all packages from different versions. I would like to know how you LaTeX users handle this issue. Thanks a lot...

• Clever Next and Previous Buttons in jQuery

  I have created a webpage which when you press 'down' automatically scrolls down to the next ID (a section which isn't visible due to overflow: hidden) When you press 'up' it scrolls back up. At the moment each arrow simply tells the webpage to go to a specific div e.g. the 'down arrow' says <a class="tab" href="#page2">Down</a> This is ok for just two pages however as I will be having more pages what I would like is to be able to specify the amount of pages and for the arrows to automatically change which link it needs to go to next. For example, on page 1 the 'up arrow' is not visible and when you press the 'down arrow' it scrolls to #page2 whereupon the 'up arrow' is then visible. If you now press the down arrow again it will take you to #page3 whereupon it then becomes hidden as page 3 is the last page. I'm guessing I need to create a 'var' which specifies the amount of pages and that to make the arrows invisible it will change the css property 'display' to none yet I don't know how to do this nor to make the links work out which number to go to next! edit: Just botched together some code which hides the arrows based on the page number however still need to work out how to update the variables and change the links the arrows go to. • Wasteful Ajax Page Loading

  I've started a new job, and the portion of the project I'm working has a very odd structure. Every pages is a .Net aspx page, and it loads just fine, but nothing is really done at load time. Everything is really loaded from a jquery document.onready handler. What is even more...interesting...is that the onready handler calls some ajax calls that drop entire .aspx pages into divs on the page, but first it strips out several parts of the the returned page. Also, he's returning things like asp:gridview controls, and the associate viewstate, which can be quite large if his dataset is big. Has anyone seen this before?

• JavaScript: Very strange behavior with assigning methods in a loop

It doesn't happen, I get "2" when clicking on either. After spending an hour meditating on the code, I decided that it probably happens because dynamic onclick methods for both anchors keep the last value of "i". So I change that loop to for (var i in buttons) { var local_i = i.toString() actions[buttons[i]] = function() { alert(local_i) } } hoping that each dynamic function will get its own copy of "i" with immediate value. But after this change I get "1" popping up when I click on either link. What am I doing wrong? It's a huge show stopper for me.

• C# Interop.Word Adding an Image from project resource folder

  Hi guys. Having some image problem with Interop.Word and C#. I want to add an image in the header of the document that I am going to generate. I have this code working perfectly section.Headers[Word.WdHeaderFooterIndex.wdHeaderFooterPrimary].Shapes.AddPicture(@"C:\Logo.jpg", ref x, ref x, ref x, ref x, ref x, ref x, ref x); Problem is that I can't have "C:\Logo.jpg" in the code since after publishing the project, there would most probably be no Logo.jpg in the C folder of the user. The image is already in my project's resource folder. I've used Image.FromFile("Logo.jpg") before but .AddPicture requires a string and not an image. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.   I required a function to remove URLs from <a> divs found within <div class="rj_insertcode">. It works quite well and removes the links generated between the defined tags. My problem: Pages that also include JavaScript do not operate correctly. JavaScript appears to be disabled or not functioning. What can I change to ensure JavaScript still operates correctly, or is there another method I could adopt?

  Alright, I have an RSS feed that gets arranged in a UITableView and then the user selects a story and it loads in a UIWebView. However, I'd like to stop using the UIWebView and just use a UITextView or UILabel. This png is what I am trying to do (just display the various text aspects of a news story): http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/2449/screenshot20100315at120.png Let me start off by saying that I have tried to use the usualNSString *myText = [webView stringByEvaluatingJavaScriptFromString:@"document.documentElement.textContent"]; and assign it to a UILabel, but it doesn't work the way that I am implementing it (in webViewDidFinishLoad--is that not correct?) and I get a blank textView and normal webView. If I overlay a UITextView on top of a UIWebView on its own (that is, a webView that just loads one page), the code posted above works fine to display the text I require, but the problem arises when the RSS feed is added into the mix. Ideas and/or help, guys? I've been stuck wondering why this doesn't work as it should for a few days now. If you have a better, more efficient way of doing it then placing the code in webViewDidFinishLoad, please let me know! Does it go in my didSelectRowAtIndexPath? I'm lost here, guys. • Internal loop only runs once, containing loop runs endlessly

  noob question I'm afraid. I have a loop that runs and rotates the hand of a clock and an internal loop that checks the angle of the hand if it is 90, 180, 270 and 360. On these 4 angles the corresponding div is displayed and its siblings removed. The hand loops and loops eternally, which is what I want, but the angle check only runs the loop once through the whole 360. As the hand passes through the angles it is correctly displaying and removing divs but is doesn't continue after the first revolution of the clock. I've obviously messed up somewhere and there is bound to be a more efficient way of doing all this. I am using jQueryRotate.js for my rotations. • How do I select dynamic ids in this format?

  I'm trying to select dynamic ids when a user types something into the input fields. My app spits out the input fields in the following format: <input id="student_1_first_name" /> <input id="student_1_last_name" /> <input id="student_2_first_name" /> <input id="student_2_last_name" /> <input id="student_3_first_name" /> <input id="student_3_last_name" /> etc. For example, I tried doing this to select the end of the id string: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready( function (){ $("input[id$=_first_name]").bind("keyup", run_some_function_here); run_some_function_here(); $("input[id$=_last_name]").bind("keyup", run_some_function_here); run_some_function_here(); } ); </script> When I do that, Jquery can't seem to select the input ids, so the functions don't run. • Solr : how do i index and search several fields?

  Hi, I've set up my first 'installation' of Solr, where each index (document) represents a musical work (with properties like number (int), title (string), version (string), composers (string) and keywords (string)). I've set the field 'title' as the default search field. However, what do I do when I would like to do a query on all fields? I'd like to give users the opportunity to search in all fields, and as far as I've understood there is at least two options for this: (1) Specify which fields the query should be made against. (2) Set up the Solr configuration with copyfields, so that values added to each of the fields will be copied to a 'catch-all'-like field which can be used for searching. However, in this case, i am uncertain how things would turn out when i take into consideration that the data types are not all the same for the various fields (the various fields will to a lesser og greater degree go through filters, but as copyfield values are taken from their original fields before the values have been run through their original fields' filters, i would have to apply one single filter to all values on the copyfield. This, again, would result in integers being 'filtered' just as strings would). Is this a case where i should use copyfields? At first glance, it seems a bit more 'flexible' to rather just search on all fields. However, maybe there's a cost? All feedback appreciated! Thanks!

The hyperlink above is php generated, meant to trigger the above JavaScript function, and swap the url from attributes contained in ids "movie_url" and "embed_url". Works just like it should in FF, but IE will only perform the .css commands. My guess? IE doesn't like me assigning IDs to PARAM and EMBED, perhaps? What do you think?

• Possible to Dynamic Form Generation Using PHP global variables

  I am currently a fairly new programmer but am trying to build a registration page for a medical insurance idea we have which captures individual information and subsequent pieces of information about that individual's sub parts. In this case, it is a fight promoter enrolling his 15+ boxers for fight testing services. Right now, I have the site fully laid out to accept 7 fighters worth of information. This is collected during the manager's enrollment. However, each fighter's information is passed and stored in session super globals such as: $_SESSION['F1Firstname']; and $_SESSION['F3SSN3'];. The issue I am running into is this, I want to create a drop down menu selector for the manager to add information for up to 20-30 fighters. Right now I use PHP to state: if ($_SESSION['Num_Fighters'] 6) ... then display the table form fields to collect consumer data. If I have to build hidden elements for 30 fighters AND provide javascript/php validation (yes I am doing both) then I fear the file size for the document will be unnecessarily large for the maanger who only wants to enroll 2 fighters. Can anybody help?

  I'm building a game in javascript/html5 and I'm trying to build a database of locked doors in a maze that can be loaded from and overwritten to throughout gameplay. I've found a large number of tutorials online, but nothing is working. I was wondering if someone could look at what I'm trying and let me know what I'm doing wrong. My JSON file looks like this: { "doors": [ {"left":true, "right":false, "bottom":false}, {"left":false, "right":false, "bottom":false}, {"right":false, "bottom":false, "top":false}, {"left":false, "right":false, "top":false} ] } I want to build the HTML page so that when a player collides with a door it checks if its locked or not like: if (player.x < leftDoor.x + leftDoor.width && player.x + player.width > leftDoor.x && player.y < leftDoor.y + leftDoor.height && player.y + player.height > leftDoor.y) { if(doors[0].left == true) alert("door is locked"); else window.location = ( "2.html?p1="); } However I'm having trouble reading from the JSON file itself. I move around Sub DIV of 'rps_square selectee' from DIV2 to DIV1 and add and remove classes to be exactly same like this. The meaning is Queen Piece is moved from Div2 to Div1. <div id="div1" class="chess_square selectee"> <div id="sub1" class="chess_piece queen"></div> </div> <div id="div2" class="chess_square"> </div> <div id="div3" class="chess_square"> </div> However, the problem is jQuery doesn't update var $selectee = $('.rps_square.selectee');. Even though I changed class names, DIV1 is not clickable and DIV2 is still clickable. By the way, I've used jQuery UI selectable but doesn't refresh either.

• Javascript error : " 'Sys' is undefined "

  Hi there, I keep having an error when running my web application. The error does not cause a compilation error when on live server at least a javascript error and nothing else. But the real problem is when "debug" ... javascript error stops the compilation and I have to "Continue" three times before proceeding normally my debug. But this error occurs at every refresh the page. All this using Visual Studio. After several hours of search on google, I saw that it was a problem with the ScriptManager and Ajax. The real problem is that I do not use any Ajax on this page but the ScriptManager is on the masterpage. Worse still, on any other page on the website, that may use Ajax or not, no javascript error! Only THIS page cause this error! Any suggestion? Note that I usualy talk french so there's probably error and sorry for this! EDIT There's the 3 places were compilation stop. 1. Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager._initialize('ctl00$ctl08', document.getElementById('aspnetForm')); 2. Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance()._updateControls([], [], [], 90); 3. • Combining XmlWriter objects?

  The way my application is structured, each component generates output as XML and returns an XmlWriter object. Before rendering the final output to the page, I combine all XML and perform an XSL transformation on that object. Below, is a simplified code sample of the application structure. Does it make sense to combine XmlWriter objects like this? Is there a better way to structure my application? • Design an Application That Stores and Processes Files

  I'm tasked with writing an application that acts as a central storage point for files (usually document formats) as provided by other applications. It also needs to take commands like "file 395 needs a copy in X format", at which point some work is offloaded to a 3rd party application. I'm having trouble coming up with a strategy for this. I'd like to keep the design as simple as possible, so I'd like to avoid big extra frameworks or techniques like threads for as long as it makes sense. The clients are expected to be web applications (for example, one is a django application that receives files from our customers; the others are not yet implemented). The platform it will be running on is likely going to be Python on Linux, unless I have a strong argument to use something else. In the beginning I thought I could fit the information I wanted to communicate in the filenames, and let my application parse the filename to figure out what it needed to do, but this is proving too inflexible with the amount of information I'm realizing I need to make available. Another idea is to pair FTP with a database used as a communication medium (client uploads a file and updates the database with a command as a row in a table) but I don't like this idea because adding commands (a known change) looks like it will require adding code as well as changing database schemas. It will also muddy up the interface my clients will have to use. I looked into Pyro to let applications communicate more directly but I don't like the idea of running an extra nameserver for this one purpose. I also don't see a good way to do file transfer within this framework. What I'm looking for is techniques and/or technologies applicable to my problem. At the simplest level, I need the ability to accept files and messages with them.

It seems that way, but I can't be sure. I've even checked the Lucene documentation (class ScoreDocs) to no avail. You'll see I'm calculating the log of the "newRelevance" value, which is based on hits[i].score. I need hits[i].score to be between 0 and 1, because if it is below zero, I'll get an error; above 1 and the sign will change from negative to positive.
