• Using FOR XML AUTO against a synonym

  We've just switched to synonyms for linked server stuff, and noticed that our FOR XML output is no longer correct. When returning XML results from a view, we could alias the view and that would be assigned as the element name. With synonyms, however, it seems to ignore the alias? We're still mostly on SQL 2005 - this bug doesn't seem to happen on our 2008 instance. Is this a known problem, and any ideas for work-arounds? For example, this is what we used to be able to do: select top 3 number from Numbers as elementname for xml auto <elementname number="0"/><elementname number="1"/><elementname number="2"/> And this is what happens with a synonym: select top 3 number from Numbers_synonym as elementname for xml auto <dbo.Numbers number="0"/><dbo.Numbers number="1"/><dbo.Numbers number="2"/> As you can see, SQL Server seems to use the name of the actual referenced object instead of the alias. This gets worse for cross server queries, because you get the four-part name instead of the nice alias. (eg: <rick_server.rick_database.dbo.Numbers number="0"/>...)

• Performance improvement of client server system

  I have a legacy client server system where the server maintains a record of some data stored in a sqlite database. The data is related to monitoring access patterns of files stored on the server. The client application is basically a remote viewer of the data. When the client is launched, it connects to the server and gets the data from the server to display in a grid view. The data gets updated in real time on the server and the view in the client automatically gets refreshed. There are two problems with the current implementation: When the database gets too big, it takes a lot of time to load the client. What are the best ways to deal with this. One option is to maintain a cache at the client side. How to best implement a cache ? How can the server maintain a diff so that it only sends the diff during the refresh cycle. There can be multiple clients and each client needs to display the latest data available on the server. The server is a windows service daemon. Both the client and the server are implemented in C#

  I have an Ubuntu VPS that I use for practice and deploying prototypes as I am a python developer. I recently started teaching my self sys admin tasks, like installing OpenLDAP. I happened to turn off the ufw firewall for just a minute, and when I ran an netstat command, I saw a foreign ip connected to ssh that I traced to china. I'd like to know a few things: 1) Is there any good network intrusion detection software, such that if any IP that's outside a specific range connects to the VPN, I can be notified? -- I am thinking about scripting this, but I'm pretty sure there's something useful out there and I believe in the wisdom of crowds. 2) How did this person gain access to my server? Is it because my firewall was down? Or is it because they browsed my LDAP directory and from there figured out a way to connect (there was a clear text password in the tree but it wasn't one used by the server's sshd)?

This application converts the textual data (stored in a database) to graphical form so that users can interpret the data in a more efficient form. Now, this application will be accessed by 3 kinds of persons: 1. Managers (who can fill the database with data and they can also view the visual form of the data after entering the data into the database) 2. Viewers (who can only view the visual form of data that has been filled by managers) 3. Administrators (who can create and manage other administrators, managers and viewers) Now, how to implement 3 diff. views of the same application. Note: Managers, Viewers and Administrators can be located in any part of the world and should access the application through internet. One idea that came in my mind is as follows: Step1: Code all the business logic in EJBs so that it can be used in distributed environment (means which can be accessed by several users through internet) Step2: Code 3 Swing GUI Clients: One for administrators, one for managers and one for viewers. These 3 GUI clients can access business logic written in EJBs. Step3: Distribute the clients corresponding to their users. For instance, manager client to managers. =================================QUESTIONS======================================= Q1. Is the above approach is correct? Q2. This is very common functionality that various softwares have. So, Do they implement this kind of functionality through this way or any other way? Q3. • How do I switch out Views in a Cocoa application?

  So I'm beginning to learn how to use Cocoa. I think I've pretty much got it but I'm hung up on creating and switching views. I'm rewriting a game I made a little bit ago for practice. All I want is one window (preferably not resizable) and I want to be able to switch out views for different screens in the game. First, I have the main menu (Start Game, High Scores, Exit). Then I need a window for each screen (Gameplay screen, Highscore screen). What I'm getting confused with is how to design this. I looked up NSViewController thinking it manages views but it doesn't. It only manages one view by loading it really. I don't understand why I'd need to use NSViewController then. Couldn't I just have a window class that contains multiple subclasses of NSView and load them like that? I'm not sure I understand the purpose of the ViewController. Does my Window Class really need to subclass NSWindowController? I was trying to follow the example of Apple's ViewController example and it has a window controller class that's a subclass of NSWindowController. I don't see what the purpose was of subclassing that. All NSWindowController seems to add is - initWithPath:(NSString *)newPath but I fail to see the use in that either when I can just edit the plist file to open the window on start up. Apple's example also has an NSView variable and an NSViewController variable. Don't you only need one variable to store the current view? Thanks in advance guys, I'm really confused as to how this works.

  We're setting up a series of Makefiles where we want to have a project-level include directory that will have symbolic links to sub-project-level include files. Many sub-project developers have chosen to have their include files also be symbolic links to yet another directory where the actual software is located. So my question is, is it inefficient to have a symbolic link to a symbolic link to another file (for, say, a C++ header that may be included dozens or more times during a compile)? • Is ther a Designer for MFC in Visual Studio like for windows forms in .NET?

  Hello, I'm a .NET programmer. I've never developed anything in MFC. Currently I had to write a C++ application (console) for some image processing task. I finished writing it. But the point is I need to design GUI also for this. Well, there won't be anything complex. Just a window with few Buttons, RadioButtons, Check Boxes, PicturesBox & few sliders. thats it. I'm using VS 2008 and was expecting a .NET style form designer. Just to test, I created a MFC project (with all default configuration) and these files were created by default: ChildFrm.cpp MainFrm.cpp mfc.cpp mfcDoc.cpp mfcView.cpp stdafx.cpp Now, I'm unable to find a Designer. There is no View Designer. I've opened all the above *.cpp and in the code editor right clicked to see "Designer View". ToolBox is just empty because I'm in code editor mode. When I built the project. This is the window I get. How to open a designer?

• Determine display or VNC session based on PID

  I frequently VNC into a server where we run many concurrent computationally intensive matlab processes. Sometimes, one of my processes misbehave, which I can see from top, but I have a hard time figuring out which VNC session it's running on, or more specifically, which display it's running on. Suppose I see that PID 8536 looks like a resource hog, and I want to investigate. Because it's a matlab session, I know there is likely an IDE open somewhere, and I want to check to see if anything important is happening before I kill it. We've solved this somewhat awkwardly in the past by identifying which PTY 8536 was launched from, then looking at a process tree to figure out things launched in that context, scrolling up, and seeing the VNC initialization. Seems like there must be a better way to go PID - X Display (or VNC Session).

  Hi, I', trying to re-format a date from a table in Codeigniter. The Controller is for a blog. I was succesfull when the date conversion happens in the View. I was hoping to convert the date in the Model to have things in order. Here's the date conversion as it happens in the View.   I'm just playing around with a simple program that opens the camera. That's literally all that I want to do. I'm a beginner and I believe that I have the basics down in terms of UI management for the iPhone so I decided to give this one a whirl. I set the camera's delegate to self because this code is placed in the delegate class (and yes, the delegate class is conforming to UIImagePickerControllerDelegate && UINavigationControllerDelegate). Main problem right now is that nothing is appearing on the screen. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing wrong, especially since the program is building correctly with no errors or warnings... • Android Layout + Programming

  I'm trying to create a "scrollable" layout in Android. Even using developers.android.com, though, I feel a little bit lost at the moment. I'm somewhat new to Java, but not so much that I feel I should be having these issues--being new to Android is the bigger problem right now. The layout I'm trying to create should scroll in a sort of a "grid". I THINK what I'm looking for is the Gallery view, but I'm really lost as to how to implement it at the moment. I want it to "snap" to center the frame, like in the actual Gallery application. Essentially, if I had a photo gallery of 9 pictures, the idea is to scroll between them up/down AND side to side, in a 3x3 manner. Doesn't need to dynamically adjust, or anything like that, I just want a grid I can scroll through. I'm also not asking for anyone to give me explicit code for it--I'm trying to learn, more than anything. But pointing me in the right direction for helpful layout programming resources would be greatly appreciated, and confirming if it's a Gallery view I'm looking for would also be really helpful. • Preventing ActiveRecord save() on an instance

  I have an ActiveRecord model object Foo; it represents a standard database row. I want to be able to display modified versions of instances of this object. I'd like to reuse the class itself, as it already has all the hooks & aspects I'll need. (For example: I already have a view that displays the appropriate attributes). Basically I want to clone the model instance, modify some of its properties, and feed it back to the caller (view, test, etc). I do not want these attribute modifications getting back into the database. However, I do want to include the id attribute in the cloned version, as it makes dealing with the route-helpers much easier. Thus, I plan on calling ActiveRecord::Base.clone(), manually setting the ID of the cloned instance, and then making the appropriate attribute changes to the new instance. This has me worried though; one save() on the modified instance and my original data will get clobbered. So, I'm looking to lock down the new instance so that it won't hurt anything else. I'm already planning on calling freeze() (on the understanding that this prevents further modification to the object, though the documentation isn't terribly clear). However, I don't see any obvious way to prevent a save(). What would be the best approach to achieving this?

• Play Video From Raw Folder

  Evening, I've just started programming with android and made a few programs and everything so I'm still kind of a novice but im trying to understand it all. So here's my problem, I'm trying to play a video, the thing is, I got it working when I Stream it from an URL with VideoView over the internet or when i place in on my sdcard. What I want to do now is play a video I've got in my res/raw folder, but it only plays audio and I don't understand why, it doesn't give any error in my logcat as far as I can see, also couldn't really find a solution with google since most of the answers are about VideoView and just put the video on your SDCard. Now someone told me I had to use setDisplay (SurfaceHolder) and I've also tried that but I still only get the audio. I hope somebody can help me to find a solution to this problem.   i tired and was unable to find the answer i am looking for an answer. my problem is that i am unable to update the values enterd in the form. I have attached all the files i'm using MYSQL database to fetch data. what happens is that i'm able to add and delete records from form using jquery and PHP scripts to MYSQL database, but i am not able to update data which was retrived from database. the file structure is as follows index.php is a file with jquery functions where it displays form for adding new data to MYSQL using save.php file and list of all records are view without refrishing page (calling load-list.php to view all records from index.php works fine, and save.php to save data from form) - Delete is an function called from index.php to delete record from mysql database (function calling delete.php works fine) - Update is an function called from index.php to update data using update-form.php by retriving specific record from mysql tabel, (works fine) Problem lies in updating data from update-form.php to update.php (in which update query is wrriten for mysql) i had tried in many ways at last i had figured out that data is not being transfred from update-form.php to update.php there is a small problem in jquery ajax function where it is not transfering data to update.php page. some thing is missing in calling update.php page it is not entering into that page I am new bee in programming i had collected this script from many forums and made this one.So i was limited in solving this problem i cam to know that this is good platform for me and many where we get a help to create new things.. please guide me with your help to complete my effors !!!!! i will be greatfull to all including ths site which gave me an oppurtunity to present my self..... please find the link below to download all files which is of 35kb (virus free assurance) download mysmallform files in ZIPped format, including mysql query thanks a lot in advance, May GOD bless YOU and THIS SITE

• Protected flash video (requires HAL) on Gentoo

  I am unable to play "protected" flash video, such as Amazon Prime Instant Video. From what I've read and uncovered, this seems to be due to a lack of HAL being installed on my computer. Confirmation that it is required for protected video can be seen towards the beginning of http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/flash-player-11-problems-playing.html However, hal is not in the gentoo portage tree, and in any case has been deprecated and replaced by udev. How can I go about getting Amazon Prime Instant Video to work again? I was considering grabbing the source from http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/hal but the links there won't load, and trying to install it from old ebuilds or from overlays which claim to still support it (e.g. kde-sunset) result in a compilation error: In file included from addon-generic-backlight.c:38:0: /usr/include/glib-2.0/glib/gmain.h:21:2: error: #error "Only <glib.h> can be included directly." Has anyone else solved this issue?

• NSProgressIndicator woes - perhaps my NSView subclass?

  Hi All I have created a basic application, created a subclassed NSView, and added it as a custom view in interface builder. All works ok. However certain things do not work correctly, which makes me wonder if my NSView is subclassed correctly? Specifically, when using an NSProgressIndicator, I can use startAnimating: and stopAnimating on an indeterminate, but if I try and do anything with a determinate with incrementBy it does nothing. Even if I set the default value of the determinate NSProgressIndicator to 50.0, it appears when the app is launched at 0.0, despite looking good in IB. My NSProgressIndicator is hooked up correctly as an IBOutlet, I can tell it to hide etc, just can't get it to animate at all. However, I also have other issues that make me think that this problem is actually my NSView subclass (such as Quick Look not firing). In my subclass I've simply overridden the initWithFrame: and drawRect methods, calling their [super]. As I said, I've then placed this as a custom view in interface builder and changed it to MyCustomView. All works fine mostly...? Am I subclassing this incorrectly, or not doing something in interface builder correctly? I seem to be missing some small thing?!

Have I to do some big structure in my view (with all related tables), cache it and send to template?

• MVVM and avoiding Monolithic God object

  I am in the completion stage of a large project that has several large components: image acquisition, image processing, data storage, factory I/O (automation project) and several others. Each of these components is reasonably independent, but for the project to run as a whole I need at least one instance of each component. Each component also has a ViewModel and View (WPF) for monitoring status and changing things. My question is the safest, most efficient, and most maintainable method of instantiating all of these objects, subscribing one class to an Event in another, and having a common ViewModel and View for all of this. Would it best if I have a class called God that has a private instance of all of these objects? I've done this in the past and regretted it. Or would it be better if God relied on Singleton instances of these objects to get the ball rolling. Alternatively, should Program.cs (or wherever Main(...) is) instantiate all of these components, and pass them to God as parameters and then let Him (snicker) and His ViewModel deal with the particulars of running this projects. Any other suggestions I would love to hear. Thank you!

• How can I set up an FTP user with a home directory inside another user's home folder?

  Hi I have an Ubuntu (Hardy) server which I am using to host multiple websites. All of the sites are stored in subfolders of a public_html folder for my main login to the server and accessed via a single SSH account. I now have a website user who wants FTP (or similar) access to enable them to upload various files etc to the directory where their website is situated, however I still need the SSH account to have access to this directory as I may need to make changes using my master account. Basically I want to create an FTP account (I have VSFTPD installed) for a user with the home directory inside my own user account but they should only be able to read/write to this folder or its subfolders but not go further up the directory tree. How can I achieve this? Thanks

  Hi I am writing an iPhone app that that is trying to create a second a view when the user clicks on an element in UITableView. Last line in above code segment calls some framework code which eventually calls the viewDidLoad method of the ReplyToViewController. Address of the reply object in the above code and the address of the object in viewDidLoad is not same. Any idea where this new object is coming from? How do I debug? I also added init method the following method in ReplyToViewController hoping that it will get called and I can find who is creating this new object. But it does not stop in this method. • Crossplatform "jail" for an application

  We currently have a variety of systems (Linux, Solarix, *BSD, HP-UX ...) on which we are not allowed to install anything into / (but I have root access. That's strange, I know). But we'd like to run Puppet on all of them. So, the obvious idea is to install Puppet with all prebuilt dependencies into some isolated tree, something like "jail", which will allow to use dependences from some prefix and to access the host system. The big advatanges would be uniform deployment and updates. One solution that came to my mind is to deploy Gentoo Prefix, and install Puppet there with package manager. However, this requires a lot of extra space and some manual patching for each system. Maybe there are some more elegant and simple solutions?
