ASP.NET MVC 2 Form Not Passing Values

Hi, I have a strange problem happening today. I am running the latest version of the MVC V2 framework and have been having no trouble at all - I came in this morning and for some reason values aren't being passed in to actions. To clarify lets say I have something like this: <% using (Html.BeginForm("Register", "Registration", FormMethod.Post)) { %> .... <input type="submit" name="register" id="register" value="Register" /> <% } %> And in my controller I have the following: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Register(RegistrationModel model, string register) { // At this point the register string is null } This has been working fine for a while now and I have not changed anything that I can think of that would cause this to happen. Does that make sense and as anyone any idea what is going on or what I have messed up? Thanks.

How to filter/sort/rank object model nodes?

I have some kind of object model and I need to filter and sort it's nodes for some kind of property. What kinds of automated systems exist to generate and select properties of the object model that correlate to what I want? (I'm intentionally being abstract and non-specific) I'm thinking of a system that works kind of like spam filters or supervised classification systems in that given an example data set it identifies rules that find nodes of interest. However I'm looking for a more general system in that it shouldn't require any design time information about the object model. It should work equality well as a spam filter on e-mail, a bug finder on a code base, an interest filter in a newsgroup or bot accounts finder on a social networking site. As long as it can explore the object model via reflection and be given a set of "interesting" nodes, it should be able to find rules that will find more nodes like them.

jQuery AJAX & an ASP.NET web service works locally but not remotely

Interesting one here. I have an ASP.NET 1.1 project that contains a web service in it. I'm using jQuery's AJAX functionality to call some services from the client. This is what my code looks like: $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: 'foo.asmx/functionName', data: 'foo1=' + foo1 + '&foo2=' + foo2, dataType: "xml", success: function(xml) { //do something with my xml data }, error: function(request, error){ //handle my error } }); This works great when I run the site from my IDE on localhost. However, when I deploy this site to any other server I get a parsererror error from jQuery. It does not appear to even call my service as I dropped in some code to write a log file to disk and it's not making it there. The same exact XML should be returned from both my localhost and the server I deployed to. Any ideas?

Using Silverlight with Existing Application

This seems like a very basic question but I couldn't find any help on web. If you could provide some link or steps to do this. I have created few basic Silverlight applications which are working fine standalone. I also have a basic ASP.NET application with a solution with around 10 Class Library Projects and 1 website. I want to create a small popup which will have some funtionality using Silverlight. How should I go about creating this application and how to integrate it with my existing application for it to show as a link. I would not want that link to open another application/site. Thanks.

populating a gridview with a button's click event

hi I have a page that has two dropdownlists(one for the locations, and the other for departments), an employee search textbox and a button. On the other page, I have a gridview. Now, what i want to archieve is that when a user types an employee's name in the textbox control, selects a location from the location dropdownlist, and a department from the departments dropdownlist, and click the button(search), the gridview on the other page must show the reqiured information of a SINGLE employee. Only one row must show. I have created a database for the employees. I know how to do this with the autopostback but i have not tried it using a button's click. NB: the gridview should show only one row of a selected employee. I'm using ASP.NET VB Your help will high apprecaited.

I have a program that works when, a file is opened with it using the right click menu in explorer. But if I select multiple files and then right click and open with my program then it opens multiple instances of my program, instead of just passing the multiple files as arguments to a single instance. The program is written in vb.net but is not a windows form, it is just a module, so I can to tick the Single instance option in the properties in Visual Studio. So how do I open multiple files from explorer context menu in a single instance.

I set a global bug catcher in my application for unhandled exceptions and it is picking up all exceptions

I am trying to figure out why this is happing. In my vb.net application I set a global handler in the ApplicationEvents.vb which I thought would only pick up any unhandled exceptions, although it is picking up every exception that happens in my application whether or not they are handled with try catch blocks. Model association changes in production environment, specifically converting a model to polymorphic?

Hi everyone, I was hoping I could get feedback on major changes to how a model works in an app that is in production already. In my case I have a model Record, that has_many PhoneNumbers. Currently it is a typical has_many belongs_to association with a record having many PhoneNumbers. Of course, I now have a feature of adding temporary, user generated records and these records will have PhoneNumbers too. I 'could' just add the user_record_id to the PhoneNumber model, but wouldn't it be better for this to be a polymorphic association? And if so, if you change how a model associates, how in the heck would I update the production database without breaking everything? .< Anyway, just looking for best practices in a situation like this. Thanks!

.net load balancing for server

Some time ago I wrote server software which is currently running at it's max. (3k users average). So I decided to rewrite certain parts so I can run the software at another server to balance it's load. I can't simply start another instance of the server since there is some data which has to be available to all users. So I was thinking of creating a small manager and all the servers connect and send their (relevant)data to the manager. But it also got me thinking about another problem. The manager could also reach it's limits which is exactly what i'm trying to prevent in the future. So I would like to know how I could fix this problem. (I have already tried to optimize critical parts of the software but I can't optimize it forever)

How do i make form data not disappear after hitting refresh?

I went to test my page on another browser. On google chrome i can fill out a form, hit back and forward and still have the data there. Now i need to refresh the page so certain data is correct (such as session id if the cookie expires or user logs out before submitting). I refresh and lose all data. Is there some option i can set so all data is kept?

How many SQL queries per HTTP request is optimal?

I know the answer to this question for the most part is "It Depends", however I wanted to see if anyone had some pointers. We execute queries each request in ASP.NET MVC. Each request we need to get user rights information, and Various data for the Views that we are displaying. How many is too much, I know I should be conscious to the number of queries i am executing. I would assume if they are small queries and optimized out, half-a-dozen should be okay? Am I right? What do you think?

Let explain what I'm trying to create. I'm creating a framework, the idea is to provide base classes to generate a math problem. Why do I need this framework? Because at first time, I realized when I create a new math problem I always do the same steps. Configuration settings such range numbers. For example if I'm developing multiplications, in beginner level only generate the first number between 2-5 or in advanced level, the first number will be between 6- 9, for example. Generate problem method. All the time I need to invoke a method like this to generate the problem. This one receives the configuration settings and generate the number according to them. And generate the object with the respective data. Validate the problem. Sometimes the problem generated is not valid. For example, supposed I'm creating fractions in most simplified, if I receive 2/4, the program should detect that this is not valid and must generate another like this one, 1/4. Load the view. All of them, have a custom view (please watch below the images). All of the problems must know how to CHECK if the user result is correct. All of this problems has answers. Some of them just require one answer, anothers may require more than one, so I guess a way to maintain flexibility to the developer has all the answers he wanna used. At the beginning I started using PRISM. Generate modules for each math problem was the idea and load it in the main system. I guess are the most important things of this idea. Let me showing some problems which I create in a WPF standalone program. Here I have a math problem about areas. When I generate the problem a set to the view the object and it draw it. In beginner level, I set in the configuration settings that just load square types. But in advance level, can load triangles and squares randomly. In this another, generate a binary problem like addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Above just generate a single problem. The idea of this is to show a test o quiz, I mean get a worksheet (this I call as a collection of problems) where the user can answer it. I hope gets the idea with my ugly drawing. How to load this math problems? As I said above, I started using PRISM, and each module contains a math problem kind. This is a snapshot of my first demo. Below show the modules loaded, and center the respective configurations or levels. Until momment, I have no idea to start creating this software. I just know that I need a question | problem class, response class, user class. But I get lost about what properties should have to contain in it. Please give a little hand of this framework. I put much effort on this question, so if any isn't clear, let me know to clarify it.

Indexing data from multiple tables with Oracle Text

It's well known that Oracle Text indexes perform best when all the data to be indexed is combined into a single index. The query select * from mytable where contains (title, 'dog') 0 or contains (body, 'cat') 0 will tend to perform much worse than select * from mytable where contains (text, 'dog WITHIN title OR cat WITHIN body') 0 For this reason, Oracle Text provides the MULTI_COLUMN_DATASTORE which will combine data from multiple columns into a single index. Effectively, it constructs a "virtual document" at indexing time, which might look something like: <title>the big dog</title> <body>the ginger cat smiles</body> This virtual document can be indexed using either AUTO_SECTION_GROUP, or by explicitly defining sections for title and body, allowing the query as expressed above. Note that we've used a column called "text" - this might have been a dummy column added to the table simply to allow us to create an index on it - or we could created the index on either of the "real" columns - title or body. It should be noted that MULTI_COLUMN_DATASTORE doesn't automatically handle updates to columns used by it - if you create the index on the column text, but specify that columns title and body are to be indexed, you will need to arrange triggers such that the text column is updated whenever title or body are altered. That works fine for single tables. But what if we actually want to combine data from multiple tables? In that case there are two approaches which work well: Create a real table which contains a summary of the information, and create the index on that using the MULTI_COLUMN_DATASTORE. This is simple, and effective, but it does use a lot of disk space as the information to be indexed has to be duplicated. Create our own "virtual" documents using the USER_DATASTORE. The user datastore allows us to specify a PL/SQL procedure which will be used to fetch the data to be indexed, returned in a CLOB, or occasionally in a BLOB or VARCHAR2. This PL/SQL procedure is called once for each row in the table to be indexed, and is passed the ROWID value of the current row being indexed. The actual contents of the procedure is entirely up to the owner, but it is normal to fetch data from one or more columns from database tables. In both cases, we still need to take care of updates - making sure that we have all the triggers necessary to update the indexed column (and, in case 1, the summary table) whenever any of the data to be indexed gets changed. I've written full examples of both these techniques, as SQL scripts to be run in the SQL*Plus tool. You will need to run them as a user who has CTXAPP role and CREATE DIRECTORY privilege. Part of the data to be indexed is a Microsoft Word file called "1.doc". You should create this file in Word, preferably containing the single line of text: "test document". This file can be saved anywhere, but the SQL scripts need to be changed so that the "create or replace directory" command refers to the right location. I am working on a Windows Form that connects to a ASP.NET membership database and I am trying to use the AJAX Login Service. No matter what I do I keep on getting 404 errors on the Authentication_JSON_AppService.axd call.
