  does anyone know or predict how facebook's iphone app architecture could look like? More specific to what could be built into the app (client) what could be rendered on demand? Do you think the main menu layout of the app (where all the navigation buttons are there) are on the client or being rendered dynamically? Similarly apps like NYTimes or US News, what portion is done on the client and what is rendered dynamically. What could be the best way to render things on-demand. Would it be ok to use to UIWebView and render most of the app in it? A quick overview would help. Thank you!

• Can I update an iOS Enterprise App in the background like an App Store app can?

  I have an iOS enterprise app that we are wirelessly distributing to our devices. Currently the app polls our server once a day to see if there is an app update. If there is, we try to install it by having the app call the following code: NSURL *installUrl = [NSURL URLWithString:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"itms-services://?action=download-manifest&url=%@", plistUrl]]; [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:installUrl]; This causes the app to prompt the user with an alert dialog to install the update. If they click install, the app closes and the update is downloaded and installed. I am wondering if there is anything for enterprise apps for iOS 7 similar to the AppStore's automatic updates? I would like to be able to update our app without the user having to press an update button and be able to update at a time when the user won't have to wait for it to install.

• Android-iPhone single codebase

  Is there a way, apart from using HTML and JavaScript on a web control, to have an (almost) single codebase for an application that should run on iOS and Android? The big issue is of course that they use a different language (Java for Android, Objective-C for iOS) for application development. It would be nice to have some sort of meta-language that will be translated in Java and in Objective-C. What about Flash? Adobe wasn't supposed to release a tool to create flash-based apps in iOS?

  Well, when I'm trying to use 'inclusion' in Django, I met some confused problems that I can't solve it by myself. There is the structures for my project. MyProject--- App1--- __init__.py models.py test.py urls.py views.py App2--- ... template--- App1--- some htmls App2--- ... templatetags--- __init__.py inclusion_test.py manage.py urls.py __init__.py settings.py I have registered templatetags folder in the settings.py (Both in Installed APPS & TEMPLATE_DIRS). But when I want to use {% load inclusion_test %} in my html, it raise an exception like this: 'inclusion_cld_tags' is not a valid tag library: Could not load template library from django.templatetags.inclusion_cld_tags, No module named inclusion_cld_tags I think there is nothing wrong with my import work, how can I do with that? • Android - modes of connectivity, device identification and device inter-communication?

  Can someone explain a couple of very simple concepts to me - I'm interested in mobile devices running android and how they are identified over networks. Some scenarios: Device is connected over WiFi - presumably the device has a standard IP address as with any host and can communicate with any other android host over TCP/IP (assuming it knows the participating device's IP? Device is connected over bluetooth - how are devices identified in this case? Device is connected over mobile operator's network - this is the one I'm interested in and confused by - is there anyway for two or more devices to discover each other and communicate via the mobile operator's network? How does a device communicate with a backend server in this scenario? In other words, how do apps and devices communicate when not connected to a WiFi network? Thanks for any advice..

• What causes subprocess.call to output blank file when attempting db export with mysqldump?

  I am having some problems using subprocess.call to export a database using mysqldump. I'm using Python 3.1 installed on Windows 7. from time import gmtime, strftime import subprocess DumpDir = "c:/apps/sqlbackup/"; DumpFile = "mysqldump-" + strftime("%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M-%S", gmtime()) + ".sql"; params = [r"mysqldump --user root --password=mypassword --force --flush-privileges --compress --comments mydatabase --result-file=" + DumpDir + DumpFile]; subprocess.call(params, shell=True); The above code causes a blank file to be created in the DumpDir. I've tried getting python to print the command so I can test it via the CMD prompt using: print(subprocess.list2cmdline(params)); If I paste the output to the CMD prompt and execute it, everything works fine. Any ideas? I'm new to Python, so I am sure the answer is simple but I've tried so many variations to get this working that I just can't figure this out.

  Hi I am a bit uncertain on how to do this: I start a "worker-thread" that runs for the duration of my apps "life". [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(updateModel) toTarget:self withObject:nil]; then - (void) updateModel { NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; BackgroundUpdate *update = [[BackgroundUpdate alloc] initWithTimerInterval:5]; [[NSRunLoop currentRunLoop] run]; //keeps it going 'forever' [update release]; [pool release]; } Now the thread "wakes" up every 5 seconds(initWithTimerInterval) to see if there are any tasks it can do. All the tasks in the BackGroundUpdate Class are only time dependent for now. I would like to have a few that were "event dependent". e.g. I would like to call the Background Object from my main thread and tell it to "speedUp", "slowDown", "reset" or any method on the object. To do this I guess I need something like performSelectorOnThread but how to get a reference to the NSthread and the Background Object?

  I am following the example from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8wy069k1.aspx to consume a web service implemented (by 3rd party) using the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern. However, my program needs to do multiple calls to the DoStuffAsync() hence will get back as many DoStuffCompleted. I chose the overload which takes an extra parameter - Object userState to distinguish them. My first question is: Is it valid to cast a GUID to Object as below, where GUID is used to generate unique taskID? Object userState = Guid.NewGuid(); Secondly, do I need to spawn off a new thread for each DoStuffAsync() call, since I am calling it multiple times? Also, would be nice to have some online examples or tutorials on this subject. (I've been googling for it the whole day and didn't get much back) Many thanks

• How to do a true Java ping?

  I have a device on a network that I am attempting to ping through my Java program. Through my windows command prompt, I can ping the device address fine and do a tracert on the address fine. Online, I have seen that in order to do a ping through Java you have to do the following: InetAddress.getByName(address).isReachable(timeout); But, when I use this code on my device address, it always returns false in my program. I am using the correct IPv4 address with a good timeout value. Also, if I use a localhost address, it works fine. Why can I ping the device through cmd, but not through my program? I have heard in various places that this is not a true ping. Is there a better way to emulate a ping in Java? Thanks

  I am having problems finding any other information than the docs for how to save the tab order for my UITabBarController, so that the user's customization is saved for next app launch. I have searched online, but have been unable to find any blog posts or articles that goes through the proper code for doing this. I realize I have to use the delegate methods for the UITabBarController (didEndCustomizingViewControllers:) but I am not sure how I best approach persistance in terms of saving the state of the order the user wants the tabs in. • COMET chat application - IIS7 slows down over time

  I have built a chat application which uses this code to push messages to clients (web pages) and to monitor online users and their information. Basically, the code creates and manages a custom thread pool for maintaining the list of connected users & their state. The application was hosted on a shared hosting account (IIS6), and worked fine. After moving the site (ASP.Net App) to a dedicated virtual server it seems I have a problem where IIS7 gets slower and slower as time passes, and my only "solution" is to restart IIS. I am trying to look at the performance counters and have do idea on which one to look.

My current approach involves: Look for that tag object that has tag=myTag pull all the comments out, sorted look for that product where product.name=myProduct pull all the comments out (which are dbrefs by the way) loop through the result of 2, and checking if they are in 4, (this I can do a limit 10) etc. It's pretty inefficient. Any better methods?

• Simplest way to use isdigit and isalpha commands ?

  Hello, Can anyone briefly explain how do these two commands work ? isdigit and isalpha .. Ofcourse I read online sources before asking the question, but unfortunately I tried them and didnt get them to work. What is the simplest way ? I know it gives back a value, so im assuming I can use it like this : if(isdigit(someinput)==1) return -1; Is that correct ? can I use this for any number ? Can I compare it with a float number ? Can I compare arrays ? Can I also use it when scanning documents or files ?   I'm developing an online website (using Django and Mysql). I have a Tests table and User table. I have 50 tests within the table and each user completes them at their own pace. How do I store the status of the tests in my DB? One idea that came to my mind is to create an additional column in User table. That column containing testid's separated by comma or any other delimiter. userid | username | testscompleted 1 john 1, 5, 34 2 tom 1, 10, 23, 25 Another idea was to create a seperate table to store userid and testid. • How can I avoid Windows 8.1 resetting my font size?

  I am using Windows 8.1 on my laptop, which has a 15.6" screen with resolution 1366x768. I measured the screen with a ruler and calculated its DPI, which is 101. Therefore, I have set the scaling to 105%. However, when I change to an external monitor, which is a huge one with resolution 1920x1080 and DPI 93, I need to change the scaling to 97% but when I change the DPI back and forth, my font sizes have get resetted. I prefer using font sizes 14 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 13 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. However, as my laptop screen is too small, in order to make my apps fit on screen, I use font sizes 12 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 11 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. I don't know why I can't resize the window to make it larger than my screen in Windows (but it is possible in Kubuntu), therefore, some parts of my apps cannot be shown with my preferred font size. I have tried changing both the DPI and the font size by using .reg files. However, on my laptop screen, after I applied the file, signed out and in, the DPI setting changed, but the font sizes were resetted to tiny, and I had to apply the same file, signed out and in again to get the correct font size. The situation is even worse on my external monitor. After I applied the file, signed out and in, both the DPI setting and the font sizes were resetted to their default values, which were 96 DPI (the physical DPI as measured by dividing the resolution by the physical size is 93) and font size 9, which is totally unacceptable. How can I write the .reg files such that the settings can be correctly applied with a single sign in?

• HTML5: dragover(), drop(): how get current x,y coordinates?

  How does one determine the (x,y) coordinates while dragging "dragover" and after the drop ("drop") in HTML5 DnD? I found a webpage that describes x,y for dragover (look at e.offsetX and e.layerX to see if set for various browsers but for the life of me they ARE NOT set). What do you use for the drop(e) function to find out WHERE in the current drop target it was actually dropped? I'm writing an online circuit design app and my drop target is large. Do I need to drop down to mouse-level to find out x,y or does HTML5 provided a higher level abstraction?

  I'm planning to develop a PHP Web App, it will mainly be used by registered users(sessions) While thinking about the DB design, I was contemplating that in order to give the best user experience possible there would be lots of options for the user to activate, deactivate, specify, etc. For example: - Options for each layout elements, dialog boxes, dashboard, grid, etc. - color, size, stay visible, invisible, don't ask again, show everytime, advanced mode, simple mode, etc. This would get like 100s of fields ranging from simple Yes/No or 1 to N values..., for each user. So, is it having a field for each of these options the way to go? or how do those CRMs or CMS or other Web Apps do it to store lots of 1-2 char long values? Do they group them on Text fields separated by a special char and then "explode" them as an array for runtime usage? thank you

  hello guys, just simple question, recently i have setup a web server to build project using zend framework, after setup and see those welcome page saying that you are creating websites powered by zendframework, then i try issuing command, $ zf create controller alert i get the message that saying that i've successfully create controller, view and so on, but when i try to navigate to the page by URL, ex: www.mywebapp.com/alert the page is broken, i've check those tuts but none of them showing this case. can some one define which step i've skip? update: (25/5/2010) so i've found that there is no problem, is just that i've not configured properly my route to my web apps, so i have to type URL like this: www.mywebapp.com/index.php/alert how am I going to change this? i mean i want to explode "index.php" out of URL.

• Browser Side Photo Editing Library

  Hi! Currently I'm searching for a free solution to simple edit some photos at the users browser. Resizing and Cropping would be mandatory. I'm not searching for an online service (for example SUMO or PIXLR which are great), because I want to include the software into a WYSIWYG Editor. JavaScript would be really nice, but it would have to work in IE 8. Pixastic is a great example, but works only in modern browsers (not IE 8 :-/) Any suggestions what I could use? Maybe setting up some kind of image processing service with ImageMagick and communicating with it through AJAX could also be an solution? Has anyone gained some experience with such a solution?

  I started getting into reading design blogs a little while ago, and it seemed that @font-face got really popular sometime late last year, or something like that, because I was under the impression that it was a new emerging feature of the web. But then I saw that Internet Explorer has had it since IE4 (with some conversion). So is it common to see @font-face online nowadays? Sould I have anything in mind with respect to accessibility, legality, or rendering before I do something like this? I saw that Hulu.com renders fonts with Canvas and a javascript called "cufon."

• iphone - Can't uninstall app on device

  hey guys, I am testing my app on my jailbreaked iPhone and i noticed something strange. When i want to uninstall it on device i got no cross to delete the app. All the other apps (not mines) have the white circled cross. Whereas on the simulator i am able to delete my app. Is it because i run it on a jailbreak with a codesign workaround? Or maybe i am missing something in the app plist. • When to override OnError?

  I'm looking into re-working and simplifying our error handling in an application I support. We currently have all of our pages inheriting from a base class we created, which in turn obviously inherits from System.Web.UI.Page. Within this base class, the OnError method is currently being overridden, and in turn calling MyBase.OnError, and then calling one of our custom logging methods. I don't see any benefit of overriding the OnError method, and I think it would be better to let the Application_Error method in the Global.asax take care of the unhandled exception (logging it) and then the customErrors section in the config would trigger a process to redirect the user.
