• Specific website not working on my connection [closed]

  For some reason, the website http://www.woopra.com/ doesn't work well (shows as plain html, no css/images/JS) on my computer and my Android tablet (they both share the same internet connection). It does however, work on my WP 7.5 phone (3G). When I try to set a wifi hotspot and use the tablet it still doesn't work (tried to clean cache). I tried FF, Chrome and IE (multiple versions). What is going on here? I'm clueless! Thanks.

• SSH not working from outside network

  Ok.. First off my ISP does not block ports. I run web server just fine from another machine. I have port forwarded port 22. I can access within network but not out of.. I.E. my android. I get "The Operation Timed Out" on ConnectBot. Oh and I have allowed 22 on UFW. To answer what exactly happened was my ISP blocks port 22, even though a while back they told me they do not block any ports.. I changed it to port 27 and it worked without a problem.

• Switching domains in one's career?

  I have been a C++,Qt programmer for the last 3.5 years and have hit a plateau in terms of doing something new. Work has been repetitive and routine. I personally believe it is time to move on but off late I am getting more offers in mobile development like Android,Iphone etc. The latest offer I have is for objective-C based profile. I do not have the slightest idea about objective-C apart from that it is Object oriented C resembling C++ but not exactly a clone. Questions in my mind are --what are the pros/cons of this careers switch or for any such switch? --Is it good for one's career to change domains after sometime? --How difficult it is to get back to one's previous area of proficiency? • Time it would take me to learn c++ given my speed? [closed]

  I am a student in second year of engineering and my life is hard, nowadays. To make my future secure and at least get good jobs, I have started learning C++; I have learned J2SE, ASP.NET (little, basic C#), PHP (little), HTML, CSS, AJAX, Javascript, SQL, a little android development (I have built a benchmark app) in 4 months and have received 1 gold medal in CSS and 1 each in HTML, CSS, Java. I am able to make things in C#, Java and all other, so I can apply all this knowledge. I was able to do all this, because I loved learning and I hate to ask this question. How much time would it take me to learn C++, good-enough to get good jobs at Google, Microsoft? I am currently learning data structures, so that's excluded.

• Can Google Translate's audio files be used in a game?

  For my game, I need text-to-speech. Since it's Android, I decided to settle for MP3s, since the range of words spoken is few. For my prototype, I'm using Google Translate to generate the audio since it has awesome pronounciation across multiple languages. But can I use it in production? What if I sell my game for $1 on the app store? All I can find on SE is that the API may be LGPL, and that the licensing page mentions the API is only available for academic research -- nothing more. My usage is a bit different; I'm actually capturing the audio bits and using those instead. I'm curious to know the license for this; I can't find anything with my Google-fu.

• HTML5 Game (Canvas) - UI Techniques?

  Hi! I'm in the process of building a JavaScript / HTML5 game (using Canvas) for mobile (Android / iPhone/ WebOS) with PhoneGap. I'm currently trying to design out how the UI and playing board should be built and how they should interact but I'm not sure what the best solution is. Here's what I can think of - Build the UI right into the canvas using things like drawImage and fillText Build parts of the UI outside of the canvas using regular DOM objects and then float a div over the canvas when UI elements need to overlap the playing board canvas. Are there any other possible techniques I can use for building the game UI that I haven't thought of? Also, which of these would be considered the "standard" way (I know HTML5 games are not very popular so there probably isn't a "standard" way yet)? And finally, which way would YOU recommend / use?   I read at many places how people have this GREAT ideas but are not able to program themselves. I have quite the opposite problem. I have developed game engine, level editor, embedded Lua scripting language, I have even made wrapper for Android and it all works well. But I have no good idea about how to proceed with actual levels; I have no good ideas. The engine itself is very generic and can be used in many game concepts, but I just cannot think of anything useful. Do you have any thoughts on how to proceed? Where should I seek ideas? Who should I ask? I am sorry if this question is a duplicate.

  i'm a fan of ubuntu, but for now i want my installation to be perfect for my new laptop, its a series 5 of samsung with A6 processor. Somebody suggest what to do? or mention any problems related to this? • Is there any way to simulate a slow connection between my server and an iPad (without installing anything on the server)?

  Some of our webapp users have difficulty on slower connections. I"m trying to get a better idea of what that "speed barrier is" so I'd like to be able to test a variety of connection speeds. I've found ways to do this on Windows but no on the iPad, so I'm looking more for some sort of proxy service that'll work with any device (not running ON that device) I did find an article about using the CharlesProxy and providing a connection to another device, but I was hoping for something simpler (need not be free) Constraints * We are on a shared server so we can't install anything and we are limited in our control over that server. * I'd like to test an iPad, Android Tablet, Windows PC.

I have developed 54 iOS/Android apps to date, but my core CS Skills apparently are rusty/bad. • Why don't we use browser detection and platform-specific CSS?

  Nowadays, the common phenomena is to develop a website for a browser and then corresponding apps for Android phones, iPhone, tablets and so on. Since all the platforms come with a browser, why aren't companies using CSS to accommodate them? Surely we can detect from the request which browser was used and from which platform the request came. Reading those values, why don't we just implement the corresponding CSS for different platforms. Like we do for IE, Chrome and Safari. This way we can use the platforms' browser capabilities and don't need to develop subsequent apps for a platform.

• Most Useful New Technology?

  I'm looking to take a sort of sabbatical, and I'd love to use it to learn a new technology. My question is this: What's the most useful "new" technology for a software engineer to use? Node.js, iOS programming, Android, something else? I'd prefer to stay away from anything too new or experimental, since those are, in my experience, rarely actually used in professional production environments (for better or worse). Does anyone happen to have stats on how many jobs there are for each new technology or have anecdotes about how fun each one is? I've been using python/Django, so that's out, and it's similar to Ruby so i don't think learning Ruby would be that useful to expanding my skills. Anyone have any other ideas?

• How to balance programming projects between feasibility and usefulness

  I've become fairly competent as a programmer, but I would not say I am a master. I work independently, most as a hobby, although I have done some freelance PHP work. I tend to find myself dabbling in a lot of things: Java Android SDK, Arduino, game scripting, Lua, etc. I've reached the point where I want to start a real software project, but cannot think of a small enough project that allows me enough practice, while still being able to publish a decent piece of software in a reasonable amount of time, and build up a portfolio. More specifically, I was looking at Ubuntu development, in Python, using the Quickly toolset, which includes the PyGTK libraries. So the question is, what is the best way to come up with a small project that is still useful, as a starting point to a software development career?

• How can I get Kindle for PC to work in Ubuntu using Wine?

  I've 'installed' Kindle using Wine but it doesn't work. The menu item is there but nothing seems to happen when I click it. I have set the application settings in Wine config to run Kindle as Windows 98 as I've seen suggested... still no luck. Any experience with this? EDIT I don't have a kindle, but I use kindle for android. I was wanting to be able to read my books on my pc without having to use windows.

• Unstable wireless connection on Ubuntu only (router config problem?)

  so I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 and I could connect to all Wi-Fi's that I've tried and it worked fine... Except for this router that I have at home. This connection seems to be unstable, it just randomly disconnects and reconnects. On the same machine I have Ubuntu 13.10 (same problem) and Windows 8 (no problem). Also there are no Wi-Fi problems when I connect with my Android phone. So I figured it must be some config issue. I tried tweaking some settings/restoring default on the router but I don't really know what I'm doing so, unsurprisingly, it didn't fix the problem.

  So I did some research and a found Box2d. I then proceeded to download it and the testbed. Now that i have it, I don't know how to properly use it. I'm looking for a clear simple answer on how to use the engine. The things I did was that I put it into a lib folder and referenced the JBox2D jar file. After that i got stuck. How can i use this to program games for android? I'm very confused since Box2d was intended for C++.
