• How do you make a bootable usb stick on OSX with a corrupted harddrive`?

  I cant access the desktop because my harddrive is corrupted. Therefore I want to make a bootable USB stick so i can transfer all of my important files to my External HD. Problem is that Im stuck on Step 3 --- http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx . Im not sure of what i should change this to: hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso It says convert failed - No such file or directory. Obviously the problem is that i dont know the path to the USB, maybe you know how to find out? Please help me. Thanks. ps. Ive downloaded the ubuntu desktop amd64+mac.

• Ubuntu 12.04 does not start

  Im using Lenovo G580. I installed Win7 first, two months ago. Now, i want to install Ubuntu 12.04. I used usb for installation. It went very well, but when i was reboot laptop after installation, it started Win7 not Ubuntu or bootloader for choice. LiveUbuntu is working very well. I tried install ubuntu a couple of times from other .iso. I tried recover Grub. When i change "boot" flag in gparted to partition with Ubuntu, BIOS show me error "missing operating system".("boot" flag is optionally on Windows partition c:/). Can it be hardware mistake? Or i did some mistakes?

• Why have column borders gone missing in Rhythmbox gui?

  My theme doesn't use shading, only borders/outlines. Since a few weeks ago Rhythmbox has stopped drawing all borders so that I can't see columns or sections very well. Even my scrollbars are not being drawn correctly. This makes the gui really hard to use. When I change themes it seems that Rhythmbox has changed its gui to use only shading to delineate sections, tabs, columns, etc.. Rhythmbox seems to be the only program that has this problem so I'm guessing this is a Rhythmbox thing, but not sure. My theme is not updated for gtk 3.6 Maybe that is the issue? Anyone know what's going on?

• Analytics - Total events divided by number of unique pages?

  I am using Google Analytics events to track keywords on my articles - not necessarily the best system I know but there are too many for variables I can't easily change it right now - and I would like to be able to see how popular each keyword is by dividing the number of page views with a keyword by the number of unique pages. Is there a/what is the best way of doing this? EDIT FOR CLARITY I currently have a system set up where every time somebody loads an article an event is fired for each of the tags/keywords used, with the keyword being the label. I can currently view my view count for each of the keywords by looking at the total events for each label, however I would like to be able to see which keywords are the most popular by dividing the number of times the event has been fired by the the number of different pages it has been fired from.

• Distinguishing between sets of status reports

  I am working on an internal database monitoring system and am at a point where I sort of hit the wall in terms of application design. Basically I have an extensible plugin architecture where I shall have an OK, a warning or an error upon running a db verification. My first question whether it is sufficient to have only one status reported with an optional status message or provide the ability to have more than one returned (with attached messages) and then calculate an aggregated overall status. In particular in the latter case my second issue would be how to distinguish between two verification reports with the same status code (as it can come from different triggers). I would need to do this to see whether some change happened between the current and last verification. I could simply have string comparisons of the attached status messages mentioned above but that does not seem very reliable.

• Ubuntu 12.04 Running Faster Than Normal

  I have just installed a new copy of Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop . i have noticed that my system is running 4x to 5x faster than normal . i have just install Vmware Desktop & centos for testing something . i have noticed that i has installed in just like less than 1 minute !! My system is booting so fast that after starting my laptop i got GUI in like 10 to 13 sec & shutting down in like 2 to 3 sec & all programs ( Firefox , Chrome , etc ) running so fast that i can see .... The only change i made after installation is cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness 1 How do I configure swappiness? The System is Dell N 5110 i7 with 8GB of RAM So my question is that what should i look for that why my system running very fast ?

• Will taking a job that's web and database related limit my software development opportunities later on?

  I love programming, particularly OOP. My school experience was mostly in Java/OOP, and I had a job for a limited time in Java, Python, and other OOP kind of languages. However, a move necessitated a change in jobs, and what I've ended up with now is a web-development and database intensive job. I may possibly hold this job for several years. My question is, will this limit my choices later on? Will I be able to find another Java / software-development kind of job, or will I be rejected because my experience will be mostly in a different area?

• nVidia FX5200 Can't set resolution upper than 800x600

  When I install nVidia drivers from terminal with this command: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current ... and I reboot, I get the max. resolution 800x600. I added new mode successfully with xrandr, but my display is 480p. My display is connected to my PC with HDMI and in Windows I was have VGA resolution on HDMI but after I installed in Ubuntu the drivers, the resolution is 480p.How to fix that? And can I change the 420p to 720p or 1080i ? Because my display have option "HDMI Full PC mode" which is good because I can see my display fully, but the Full PC mode is not supported for 480p. • how to make game objects to contain other objects?

  Im pretty undecided about what path to take here. The simplest that comes to mind is just adding a field List to the GameObject class where i would store the things contained in it. But would it be elegant and well tought? And would it be good performance wise?(ofc 99.9% of my objects wouldnt have anything stored in them...) What about deriving a ContainerObject from GameObject? This way only they would have additional fields but then i would have to change many things, my collections of objects would have to become a generic and id have to cast very often into GameObject...

• What class structure allows for a base class and mix/match of subclasses? (Similar to Users w/ roles)

  I have a set of base characteristics, and then a number of sub-types. Each instance must be one of the sub-types, but can be multiple sub-types at once. The sub-types of each thing can change. In general, I don't care what subtype I have, but sometimes I do care. This is much like a Users-Roles sort of relationship where a User having a particular Role gives the user additional characteristics. Sort of like duck-typing (ie. If my Foo has a Bar, I can treat it like a ThingWithABar.) Straight inheritance doesn't work, since that doesn't allow mix/match of sub-types. (ie. no multi-inheritance). Straight composition doesn't work because I can't switch that up at runtime. How can I model this?

  I have some game objects that are always at the same position in my game world as they make up some of the scenery of my puzzle game. At the moment, their positions are sort of hard coded in and some of their positions are calculated relative to the hard coded positions of other objects at the time of game initialization. This has been hard to maintain because whenever I've decided to change the position of these scenery objects as the game design evolved, I have to go and rewrite parts of the code that place the created objects and calculate their positions in the world. Is there a more maintainable way of handling the positioning of fixed game objects?

• I cannot login to my ubuntu admin!!!! HELP!

  I used lightdm to hide the users at the login prompt of ubuntu and it hid my account. The only one visible is "other" and it doesn't even have a known password. So, I have accessed the terminal and created a guest account and another account without passwords and they are not visible. I am new to using the terminal so I don't know how to write the commands for either: making all users/accounts visible to the login and/or making the guest accounts visible, and then once in the GUI change the login settings to see my admin account. I have no idea of what else I could do, or even how to do it. I would appreciate any help, I'm in a desperate situation because I really need to access my desktop! THANK YOU!!! Any ideas are appreciated!!!

• Using gLabels in 12.04 - How do I put part of text in bold?

  I am using gLabels to print a page of the same label which is an address that I entered in a text box. I want to put part of it in bold - e.g. the postcode and post town. I can change the whole text but I can't find how to select just part of it. I used to be able to do it on my old system but I can't find where to do it now. • Load Web Pages Problem- Using Firefox and Chromium

  Basicly my problem emerges when I try to load Facebook and Yahoomail, I don't know why Both browsers Firefox and Chromium don't load these webpages, but this problem only happen with UBUNTU, when I'm in windows no problem. Note: The other webpages like youtube, gmail etc load without any problem. I've tried these following quikcly solutions: -delete cookies, history and Temp files -return the browser to their original settings -desintall and install the browsers -Change the DNS configuration Nothing has been successfull. • Force Gnome 3 to work

  I have Ubuntu 12.10 on dual-boot with windows XP. My PC specifications are AMD Sempron 2800+ 1,6GHz with 512 MB ram and ATI Radeon 9250 graphic card with 128 MB memory. As Unity works slow and I don't like it's look, I installed gnome-shell. But as you know, Gnome 3 won't work on it. But gnome classic without effects works great. Thing is, when I turn off windows (by holding the power button or pressing restart button) my resolution on Linux is changed to 1024x768, and I can only change it by turning off the PC and turning off it's power source. But it is not the problem. The problem is that it runs Gnome 3 after one restart, it also runs better than Unity. My question is: Can I somehow force gnome 3 to work always and disable some of it's effects so it can run better?

I'd like to change things up and have the enemies move towards the player but in a wave like motion. • Monitor resolution can't be saved

  Today I installed Lubuntu 13.10 on Vmware Player (inside Windows). I change the Monitor setting (resolution) from default 800x600 to 1680x1050. It works. Beside Apply, I also press Save button. "Changes are saved" appears. But - after restart, the resolution is again in 800x600. I also opened /etc/xdg/lxsession/Lubuntu/autostart and add (it was empty before) one line: @xrandr --mode 1680x1050 After restart the default resolution is back again. Any idea?

• xset: unable to open display

  for the longest time after about 5 minutes my screen would blank out. Now the screen will go blank after 5 minutes but then 2 seconds after that it will light up white and keep the laptop backlighting on. I didnt change any settings to my knowledge it just happened randomly after powering it on one day and has occurred since then. I wish to resort back to blanking the screen out completely since i leave this computer on all the time and its hard to sleep with a huge white light all the time. "xset dpms force off" just yeilds me ---- xset: unable to open display ""

  I am a new developer, who just got hired at a big company. I don't know how but I guess they are desperate. However, I am well-versed with HTML5/CSS3 though things change and new things are released and I keep up with as much as I can. But this job required me to hand-code Javascript, know Jquery and Ajax. I have been exposed to this a bit but I am not sure if I can hand-code Javascript. My question is, is it necessary to memorize all there is about Javascript or are there a few key things that I should know how to hand-code because looking at javascript code it seems there are lots of lines code!   It’s finally here: the Kindle app for Windows Phone 7! Finally we can have our books on the go as well! It’s not sitting atop the “new” list on the WP7 marketplace though. I had to go to the Books section of the marketplace, and there its set to the top spot of free apps. I’m going to read the next chapter in my current book on it to see what the experience is like. After playing quickly with it, here’s some observations: - You flip pages going left to right, not up and down. No setting to change this if you don’t like it. - Good options for changing font size, background colour, and setting bookmarks. - *No* option for highlighting though. However, previous highlights do show up and you can review notes made in other programs Still, for a free Kindle reader and the ability to catch up on books wherever on the phone, so far so good!

• My computter wont shutdown

  If I try to shutdown my computer it simply takes me back to the login-screen. I looked around and found : Type in terminal: 1. sudo gedit /etc/default/grub 2. Find the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" 3. Change this to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force" 4. Save the file and close the file. 5. Finally, in terminal: sudo update-grub but now there is a new problem. if I try step 5 it says: myname@ubuntu:~$ sudo update-grub [sudo] password for myname: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). myname@ubuntu:~$ I am new whit linux and dont know what to do.
