• Installation issue after 4 attempts

  Have successfully installed Ubuntu 12.10 on 2 laptops, one running Vista & one running Windows8. Made 4 attempts (long downloads of WUBI.EXE) to different HD's & still NO GO. The machine is an older machine with Windows2000Professional installed & running. The system has 3 hard drives; C:(20.5 Gb with 7.26Gb Free), D: (74.5 Gb with 33.1 Gb Free), & E: (35.3 Gb with 24.8 Gb Free) which all have Gigabytes space available; also an A: 3 1/2floppy drive and a CD-drive burner. The CPU processor is older but seems sufficient: AMD Athlon XP 1700+ and the task manager of Windows2000 shows the processor works fine.. The flat-screen display works fine. Here is the error message I receive each time the 'installation configuration' is verified: "No root file system is defined" "Please correct this from partitioning menu" << The Ubuntu operating system is allowing me a couple of options at the very top right menu. I was able to establish a wireless connection but the MAIN homepage won't load with FIREFOX app or any other apps. I cannot access or even find any 'Partitioning Menu" from the displayed page. I cannot access files or Windows Explorer to view drives since I'm not using the Windows O/S. If I try to go back & re-install the UBUNTU 12.10 again, it always asks me to UNINSTALL the one found on the HD & then I run WUBI.EXE again which takes a long time for the download. Do I need to go back into Windows2000 & use Windows Explorer to look at the file structure & add a partition? On previous attempts I have tried loading the WUBI.EXE on all 3 HD's C: D: & E: Sure is frustrating?? Thanks for any suggestions. NEW UBUNTU user & what I've seen so far I like.. (J.R.)

• Configuring Touchpad Multi-Tap on Ubuntu 11.10

  I am having a hard time configuring my notebook's touchpad. I can do everything I can in Windows with the exception of three-finger tap, which doesn't work, and the action of two-finger tap which is giving me the equivalent to a right-mouse click, when I wanted a middle-mouse click. I read on a forum to use this as a guide. The problem is that I can't even find the configuration file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf. I tried running pacman -S xf86-input-synaptics but I don't have the pacman program installed. When I try to install it by sudo apt-get install I get a pacman game instead! I know the guide is for archlinux, so maybe that's why it doesn't work with me. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 on an Asus N82JV. Any help on this is appreciated. • Send raw data to USB parallel port after upgrading to 11.10

  I have a laser cutter connected via a generic USB to parallel adapter. The laser cutter speaks HPGL, as it happens, but since this is a laser cutter and not a plotter, I usually want to generate the HPGL myself, since I care about the ordering, speed, and direction of cuts and so on. In previous versions of Ubuntu, I was able to print to the cutter by copying an HPGL file directly to the corresponding USB "lp" device. For example: cp foo.plt /dev/usblp1 Well, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric, and I can't find any "lp" devices in /dev anymore. D'oh! What's the preferred way to send raw data to a parallel port in Ubuntu? I've tried System Settings Printing + Add, hoping that I might be able to associate my device with some kind of "raw printer" driver and print to it with a command like lp -d LaserCutter foo.plt But my USB to parallel adapter doesn't seem to show up in the list. What I do see are my HP Color LaserJet, two USB-to-serial adapters, "Enter URI", and "Network Printer". Meanwhile, over in /dev, I do see /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1 devices for the 2 USB-to-serial adapters. I don't see anything obvious corresponding to the HP printer (which was /dev/usblp0 prior to the upgrade), except for generic USB stuff. For example, sudo find /dev | grep lp produces no output. I do seem to be able to print to the HP printer just fine, though. The printer setup GUI gives it a device URI starting with "hp:" which isn't much help for the parallel adapter. The CUPS administrator's guide makes it sound like I might need to feed it a device URI of the form parallel:/dev/SOMETHING, but of course if I had a /dev/SOMETHING I'd probably just go on writing to it directly.   Recently, I had the pleasure of representing Oracle at the American Society of Military Comptrollers National Professional Development Institute (PDI).  The PDI is the premier training event for resource managers in the Department of Defense and US Coast Guard.  Each year they assemble top presenters and key note speakers to convey their experiences and share the upcoming goals and vision for the Defense Department's financial and resource management community.  This year, the common themes were centered around 'auditability' and 'efficiency'.   What is auditability?  There were many definitions/themes tossed around, but to summarize my notes, it boiled down to:- the proper tracking of funds- audit readiness- proper controls- proper documentation There were sessions regarding entire programs focused on the need for auditability.  For example, FIAR: Financial Improvement and Audit Readiness (http://comptroller.defense.gov/fiar/index.html)   The FIAR stresses the "...improve(ment of) the Department's financial processes, controls and information." The entire conference, one set of solutions kept popping into my head around, "how can Oracle's solutions assist the Department of Defense", or any other Federal Agency, improve their financial processes and controls?   One answer came to mind:  Oracle Governance, Risk, and Compliance Management. Commonly referred to as "GRC". Let me summarize the main components around Oracle's GRC solution: GRC Manager: This solution is the central repository for documenting business processes, policies, and established controls.  All identified risks and issues are documented within the repository as well as action plans necessary for mitigation. GRC Controls:  This solution consists of a set of tools which are embedded with your ERP (financial, human resource, supply chain, etc.) applications to detect, prevent, and/or enforce the policies and procedures established by your Agency.  Components of the solution include:- Application Access Control Governor: a robust tool for managing application roles and responsibilities; simplify segregation of duty maintenance- Configuration Controls Governor: complete audit trail for changes made to configurations- Transactions Control Governor: track violations of internal controls; alert management to suspicious activities; be warned when high dollar transactions are occurring on an irregular basis; - Preventative Controls Governor: prevent sensitive information from being viewed by unauthorized parties; enforce field, block, and form change control If you are in the financial or resource management community and are concerned about auditability within your organization I suggest you follow up this post by reading about Oracle's GRC solutions.  www.oracle.com/grc Please feel free to follow up with thought and questions in the comments section below.  Also, if you have a topic you would like addressed in this blog, just drop me a note at [email protected]  or leave the suggestion in the comment section as well.   After upgrading to 12.04, my mythbuntu client/server seems to be running in 1080i, the clue comes from: [ 1176.117] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1920x1080_60i" [ 1231.340] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "DFP-1:1920x1080_60@1920x1080+0+0" This is from Xorg.0.log. This whole thing started from video tearing when watching Mythtv recordings. It didn't happen in 10.10. Should I use "TVStandard" "HD1080p" in the screen section since this is a dedicated HTPC? It only connects to an HDTV (1080p) via hdmi. • Ubuntu won't display netbook's native resolution

  FYI: My Netbook model is HP Mini 210-1004sa, which comes with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150, and has a display 10.1" Active Matrix Colour TFT 1024 x 600. I recently removed Windows 7 Starter from my netbook, and replaced it with Ubuntu 12.10. The problem is the OS doesn't seem to recognise the native display resolution of 1024x600 i.e. the bottom bits of Ubuntu is hidden beneath the screen & the only 2 available resolutions are: the default 1024x768 and 800x600. I've also thought about replacing Ubuntu with Lubuntu or Puppy Linux, as the system does run a bit slow, but I can't, as then I won't be able to access the taskbar and application menu which will be hidden beneath the screen. Only Ubuntu with Unity is currently usable, as the Unity Launcher is visible enough. I was able to define a custom resolution 1024x600 using the Q&A: How set my monitor resolution? but when I set that resolution, there appears a black band at the top of the screen and the desktop area is lowered, with bits of it hidden beneath the screen. • Code review recommendations and Code Smells

  Some time ago Twitter told that I am similar to Boris Lipschitz . Indeed he is also .Net programmer from Russia living in Australia. I‘ve read his list of Code Review points and found them quite comprehensive. A few points  were not clear for me, and it forced me for a further reading.In particular the statement “Exception should not be used to return a status or an error code.” wasn’t fully clear for me, because sometimes we store an exception as an object with all error details and I believe it’s a valid approach. However I agree that throwing exceptions should be avoided, if you expect to return error as a part of a normal flow. In particular, I disagree with “Dead Code” recommendation “Ruthlessly delete code that isn't being used. That's why we have source control systems!”. If there is a chance that not used code will be required in a future, it is convenient to keep it as commented or #if/#endif blocks with appropriate explanation, why it could be required in the future. TFS is a good source control system, but context search in source code of current solution is much easier than finding something in the previous versions of the code.I also found a link to a good book “Clean Code.A.Handbook.of.Agile.Software”

Mainly you have to: Upload wp-db-abstraction.php and the wp-db-abstraction directory to wp-content/mu-plugins.  This should be parallel to your regular plugins directory.  If the mu-plugins directory does not exist, you must create it. Put the db.php file from inside the wp-db-abstraction.php directory to wp-content/db.php Now you can create an application pool in IIS like the following one Create a website, using the above Application Pool, that points to the folder where you unpacked Wordpress files. Be sure to give the “Write” permission to the IIS account, as pointed out in this (old, but still quite valid) installation manual: http://wordpress.visitmix.com/development/installing-wordpress-on-sql-server#iis Now you’re ready to go. Point your browser to the configured website and the Wordpress installation screen will be there for you. When you’re requested to enter information to connect to MySQL database, simply skip that page, leaving the default values. If you have installed the Database Abstraction Layer, another database installation screen will appear after the one used by MySQL, and here you can enter the configuration information needed to connect to SQL Server.   Been getting asked again by customers and partners about chargeback and showback in the cloud so thought I would blog on my response to this question. Charge Back background, information and industry analysis: Cloud computing is all about shared resources. These shared resources are computer servers (including memory and CPU), network devices, hard disk storage, database servers, application servers, cooling, floor space, electricity and more. These resources are shared by departments within a company, or by a number of companies, when resources are hosted in the public or hybrid cloud. Currently, hosting providers that run other companies on their cloud platforms do not have an accurate way to measure the shared computing resources used by a specific user let alone used by a specific customer. Additionally, companies running their own cloud data centers, for private or hybrid clouds, have no way of measure and charging back the departments in the company that are using these shared cloud resources. In both cases, the lack of determine shared resource costs and to charge them back to the company, department or user that is using this resources is limited a clear measure of business benefit and impacting company’s ability to measure the Return on Investment (ROI). An IT chargeback system is an accounting strategy that applies the costs of IT services, hardware or software to the business unit in which they are used. This system contrasts with traditional IT accounting models in which a centralized department bears all of the IT costs in an organization and those costs are treated simply as corporate overhead. Showback involves showing the IT costs to a department or customer but not actually charging them for their IT usage. Showback is a gradual method of introducing chargeback into an enterprise. Most companies implement a show back mechanism before a full chargeback system is put in place. Oracle chargeback product: Oracle Enterprise Manager provides tools for defining detailed Chargeback plans spanning different metrics collected for each type of resources as well as defining Cost Centers for grouping costs across multiple developers. Chargeback plans can use not only usage based costs, but also configuration based costs (e.g. version of the platform) or fixed costs (e.g. flat-rate management fee). Chargeback has rich out of the box reports. Trending reports show how charge and resource consumption varies over time, while Summary reports show the breakdown of charges or usage by different dimensions such as Cost Center or Target Type. These reports help consumers in understanding how their charges relate to their consumption and also assist the IT department with budgeting and planning activities. With BI Publisher, the reports can be made available in a variety of formats such as PDF, HTML, Word, Excel or PowerPoint.

• Can't get Wireless RT2x00usb driver to work, and can't blacklist it

  After a two year hiatus to Linux, I try it again out again. And then I run into to driver issues... I have an old Linksys WUSB54G v4 Wireless USB Adapter. In previous versions I had to use a combination of Ndiswrapper and Wicd to hope of getting it working. In 10.10, apparently there are built in drivers for it. Unfortunately they don't work. Fails to connect to my WPA network, fails to connect to my open unencrypted network. Wicd fails at "Obtaining IP address" or when using static IPs fails at verifying connectivity to network. Getting fed up I tried the ndiswrapper approach. Installed and configured, but still not working, even when blacklisting the rt2570 module. • How do I install Citrix receiver?

  Has anyone managed to get the Citrix receiver client working in 64-bit Natty (11.04). It seems libmotif4 won't install multi-arch (32 bit and 64 bit libraries). I also see crazy dependency errors despite the libraries being present. Here is what I received initially when trying to install icaclient.deb from Citrix; sudo dpkg -i Downloads/icaclient_11.100_i386.patched.deb dpkg: error processing Downloads/icaclient_11.100_i386.patched.deb (--install): package architecture (i386) does not match system (amd64) Errors were encountered while processing: Downloads/icaclient_11.100_i386.patched.deb I then installed the 32 bit libraries. sudo apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk Then I noticed libmotif4 (a dependency of the citrix client) wasn't present so I installed the 64bit version. sudo apt-get install libmotif4 I then tried to force the 32 bit version; sudo dpkg --force-architecture -i Downloads/libmotif4_2.3.3-5_i386.deb dpkg: warning: overriding problem because --force enabled: package architecture (i386) does not match system (amd64) Selecting previously deselected package libmotif4:i386. dpkg: error processing Downloads/libmotif4_2.3.3-5_i386.deb (--install): libmotif4:i386 2.3.3-5 (Multi-Arch: no) is not co-installable with libmotif4:amd64 2.3.3-5ubuntu1 (Multi-Arch: no) which is currently installed So I uninstalled the 64 bit version and tried to install the 32 bit version. It is complaining about libraries that are indeed present (libc6 64 bit and 32 bit). libmotif4 is only 32 bit installed and won't install alongside libmotif4 64 bit. libmotif4 error when you try to install it alongside the 32bit instance; libmotif4:amd64 2.3.3-5 (Multi-Arch: no) is not co-installable with libmotif4:i386 2.3.3-5ubuntu1 (Multi-Arch: no) which is currently installed Any tips?

• SharePoint Designer 2010 Workflow Email Link To Item

  In this post I’ll walk you through the process of sending an email that contains a link to the current item from a SharePoint Designer 2010 workflow.  This is a process that has been published on many other forums and blogs, but many that I have seen are more complex than seems necessary. Problem     A common request from SharePoint users is to get an email which contains a link to review/approve/edit the workflow item.  SharePoint list items contain an automatic property for Url Path, but unfortunately that Url is not properly formatted to retrieve the item if you include it directly on the message body.  I tried a few solutions suggested from other blogs or forums that took a substring of the Url Path property, concatenated the display form view Url, and mixed in some other strings.  While I was able to get this working in some scenarios I still had issues in general. Solution     My solution involved adding a hyperlink to the message body.  This ended up being far easier than I had expected and fairly intuitive once I found the correct property to use.  Follow these steps to see what I did.     First add a “Send an Email” action to your workflow.  Edit the action to pull up the email configuration dialog.  Click the “Add hyperlink” button seen below. When prompted for the address of the link click the fx button to perform a lookup.  Choose Workflow Context from the “data source” dropdown.  Choose Current Item URL from the “field from source” dropdown.  Click OK. Your Edit Hyperlink dialog should now look something like this. The end result will be a hyperlink added to your email pointing to the current workflow item.  Note: this link points to the non-modal dialog display form (display form similar to what you had in 2007). Conclusion     In this post I walked you through the steps to create a SharePoint Designer 2010 workflow with an email that contains a link to the current item.  While there are many other options for accomplishing this out on the web I found this to be a more concise process and easy to understand.  Hopefully you found this helpful as well.  Feel free to leave any comments or feedback if you’ve found other ways that were helpful to you.         -Frog Out
