  • MySQL: Question about SELECT WHERE AND/OR

    - by Andrew
    I'm trying to write a query that returns the same result from three different events, but I think I am doing it wrong. I can run my query against one event ID and it works. How can I select all three? Here's what I have so far: SELECT * FROM `Registrations` WHERE `Role` = "Attendee" AND `RegistrationStatus_ID` = "1" AND `DigSignature` IS NULL AND `Event_ID` = "147" OR `Event_ID` = "155" OR `Event_ID` = "160"

  • B-trees, databases, sequential inputs, and speed.

    - by IanC
    I know from experience that b-trees have awful performance when data is added to them sequentially (regardless of the direction). However, when data is added randomly, best performance is obtained. This is easy to demonstrate with the likes of an RB-Tree. Sequential writes cause a maximum number of tree balances to be performed. I know very few databases use binary trees, but rather used n-order balanced trees. I logically assume they suffer a similar fate to binary trees when it comes to sequential inputs. This sparked my curiosity. If this is so, then one could deduce that writing sequential IDs (such as in IDENTITY(1,1)) would cause multiple re-balances of the tree to occur. I have seen many posts argue against GUIDs as "these will cause random writes". I never use GUIDs, but it struck me that this "bad" point was in fact a good point. So I decided to test it. Here is my code: SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[T1]( [ID] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [T1_1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([ID] ASC) ) GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[T2]( [ID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [T2_1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([ID] ASC) ) GO declare @i int, @t1 datetime, @t2 datetime, @t3 datetime, @c char(300) set @t1 = GETDATE() set @i = 1 while @i < 2000 begin insert into T2 values (NEWID(), @c) set @i = @i + 1 end set @t2 = GETDATE() WAITFOR delay '0:0:10' set @t3 = GETDATE() set @i = 1 while @i < 2000 begin insert into T1 values (@i, @c) set @i = @i + 1 end select DATEDIFF(ms, @t1, @t2) AS [Int], DATEDIFF(ms, @t3, getdate()) AS [GUID] drop table T1 drop table T2 Note that I am not subtracting any time for the creation of the GUID nor for the considerably extra size of the row. The results on my machine were as follows: Int: 17,340 ms GUID: 6,746 ms This means that in this test, random inserts of 16 bytes was almost 3 times faster than sequential inserts of 4 bytes. Would anyone like to comment on this? Ps. I get that this isn't a question. It's an invite to discussion, and that is relevant to learning optimum programming.

  • Unit testing class in a web service in .net

    - by Dan Bailiff
    After some digging here, I took the advice in this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/371961/how-to-unit-test-c-web-service-with-visual-studio-2008 I've created a separate class and my web service class is just a wrapper for that one. The problem is that when I try to create a unit test project in VS2008, it insists on creating a unit test that acts like I'm testing the web service calls instead of the class I specified. I can't get to the class I'm trying to test. I have a web service "subscription_api.asmx". The code behind is "subscription_api.cs" which contains the web method wrapper calls to the real code at "subscription.cs". I would expect to be able to do the following: [TestMethod()] public void GetSystemStatusTest() { subscription sub = new subscription(); XmlNode node = sub.GetSystemStatusTest(); Assert.IsNotNull(node); } But instead I get this mess which is autogenerated from VS'08: /// <summary> ///A test for GetSystemStatus ///</summary> // TODO: Ensure that the UrlToTest attribute specifies a URL to an ASP.NET page (for example, // http://.../Default.aspx). This is necessary for the unit test to be executed on the web server, // whether you are testing a page, web service, or a WCF service. [TestMethod()] [HostType("ASP.NET")] [AspNetDevelopmentServerHost("C:\\CVSROOT\\rnr\\pro\\product\\wms\\ss\\subscription_api", "/subscription_api")] [UrlToTest("http://localhost/subscription_api")] public void GetSystemStatusTest() { subscription_Accessor target = new subscription_Accessor(); // TODO: Initialize to an appropriate value XmlNode expected = null; // TODO: Initialize to an appropriate value XmlNode actual; actual = target.GetSystemStatus(); Assert.AreEqual(expected, actual); Assert.Inconclusive("Verify the correctness of this test method."); } Additionally, there is a "subscription_api.accessor" in the Test References folder. When I try this: [TestMethod()] public void GetSystemStatusTest2() { subscription_Accessor sub = new subscription_Accessor(); XmlNode node = sub.GetSystemStatus(); Assert.IsNotNull(node); } I get an error: Test method subscription_api.Test.subscriptionTest.GetSystemStatusTest2 threw exception: System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'subscription_Accessor' threw an exception. ---> System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. I'm really new to unit testing and feel lost. How can I create a unit test just for my subscription class in "subscription.cs" without testing the web service? Am I limited to testing within the same project (I hope not)? Do I have to put the target class in its own project outside of the web service project?

  • Ping remote server and wait to get data

    - by infinity
    Hi I'm building my first application for android and I've reached a point where I can't find a solution even have no idea what to search for in Google. So the problem: I am pinging a remote server with GET request through the application passing some parameters like file_id. Then the server gives back confirmation if the file exists or error otherwise, both in plain text. The error string is $$$ERROR$$$. Actually the confirmation is JSON string that holds the path to the file. If the file doesn't exists on the server it generated the error message and start downloading the file and processing it which normally takes 10-30 seconds. What would be the best way to check if the file is ready for download? I have DownloadFile class that extends AsyncTask but before I reach the point to download the file I need the URL which is dependant on the previous request which is in the main class in the UI thread. Here is some code: public class MainActivity extends Activity { private String getInfo() { // Create a new HttpClient and Post Header HttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient(); HttpGet httpPost = new HttpGet(infoUrl); StringBuilder sb = null; String data; JSONObject jObject = null; try { HttpResponse response = httpClient.execute(httpPost); // This might be equal "$$$ERROR$$$" if no file exists sb = inputStreamToString(response.getEntity().getContent()); } catch(ClientProtocolException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block Log.v("Error: pushItem ClientProtocolException: ", e.toString()); } catch (IOException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block Log.v("Error: pushItem IOException: ", e.toString()); } // Clean the data to be complaint JSON format data = sb.toString().replace("info = ", ""); try { jObject = new JSONObject(data); data = jObject.getString("h"); fileTitle = jObject.getString("title"); } catch (JSONException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } downloadUrl = String.format(downloadUrl, fileId, data); return downloadUrl; } } So my idea was to get the content and if equal to $$$ERROR$$$ go into loop until JSON data is passed but I guess there is better solution. Note: I don't have control over the server output so have to deal with what I have.

  • C: reading file and populating struct

    - by deostroll
    Hi, I have a structure with the following definition: typedef struct myStruct{ int a; char* c; int f; } OBJECT; I am able to populate this object and write it to a file. However I am not able to read the char* c value in it...while trying to read it, it gives me a segmentation fault error. Is there anything wrong with my code: //writensave.c #include "mystruct.h" #include <stdio.h> #include <string.h> #define p(x) printf(x) int main() { p("Creating file to write...\n"); FILE* file = fopen("struct.dat", "w"); if(file == NULL) { printf("Error opening file\n"); return -1; } p("creating structure\n"); OBJECT* myObj = (OBJECT*)malloc(sizeof(OBJECT)); myObj->a = 20; myObj->f = 45; myObj->c = (char*)calloc(30, sizeof(char)); strcpy(myObj->c, "This is a test"); p("Writing object to file...\n"); fwrite(myObj, sizeof(OBJECT), 1, file); p("Close file\n"); fclose(file); p("End of program\n"); return 0; } Here is how I am trying to read it: //readnprint.c #include "mystruct.h" #include <stdio.h> #define p(x) printf(x) int main() { FILE* file = fopen("struct.dat", "r"); char* buffer; buffer = (char*) malloc(sizeof(OBJECT)); if(file == NULL) { p("Error opening file"); return -1; } fread((void *)buffer, sizeof(OBJECT), 1, file); OBJECT* obj = (OBJECT*)buffer; printf("obj->a = %d\nobj->f = %d \nobj->c = %s", obj->a, obj->f, obj->c); fclose(file); return 0; }

  • Listfield layout question - blackberry

    - by Kai
    I'm having an interesting anomaly when displaying a listfield on the blackberry simulator: The top item is the height of a single line of text (about 12 pixels) while the rest are fine. Does anyone know why only the top item is being drawn this way? Also, when I add an empty venue in position 0, it still displays the first actual venue this way (item in position 1). Not sure what to do. Thanks for any help. The layout looks like this: ----------------------------------- | *part of image* | title | ----------------------------------- | | title | | * full image * | address | | | city, zip | ----------------------------------- The object is called like so: listField = new ListField( venueList.size() ); listField.setCallback( this ); listField.setSelectedIndex(-1); _middle.add( listField ); Here is the drawListRow code: public void drawListRow( ListField listField, Graphics graphics, int index, int y, int width ) { listField.setRowHeight(90); Hashtable item = (Hashtable) venueList.elementAt( index ); String venue_name = (String) item.get("name"); String image_url = (String) item.get("image_url"); String address = (String) item.get("address"); String city = (String) item.get("city"); String zip = (String) item.get("zip"); EncodedImage img = null; try { String filename = image_url.substring( image_url.indexOf("crop/") + 5, image_url.length() ); FileConnection fconn = (FileConnection) Connector.open( "file:///SDCard/Blackberry/project1/" + filename, Connector.READ); if ( !fconn.exists() ) { } else { InputStream input = fconn.openInputStream(); byte[] data = new byte[(int)fconn.fileSize()]; input.read(data); input.close(); if(data.length > 0) { EncodedImage rawimg = EncodedImage.createEncodedImage(data, 0, data.length); int dw = Fixed32.toFP(Display.getWidth()); int iw = Fixed32.toFP(rawimg.getWidth()); int sf = Fixed32.div(iw, dw); img = rawimg.scaleImage32(sf * 4, sf * 4); } else { } } } catch(IOException ef) { } graphics.drawText( venue_name, 140, y, 0, width ); graphics.drawText( address, 140, y + 15, 0, width ); graphics.drawText( city + ", " + zip, 140, y + 30, 0, width ); if(img != null) { graphics.drawImage(0, y, img.getWidth(), img.getHeight(), img, 0, 0, 0); } }

  • StreamWriter appends random data

    - by void
    Hi I'm seeing odd behaviour using the StreamWriter class writing extra data to a file using this code: public void WriteToCSV(string filename) { StreamWriter streamWriter = null; try { streamWriter = new StreamWriter(filename); Log.Info("Writing CSV report header information ... "); streamWriter.WriteLine("\"{0}\",\"{1}\",\"{2}\",\"{3}\"", ((int)CSVRecordType.Header).ToString("D2", CultureInfo.CurrentCulture), m_InputFilename, m_LoadStartDate, m_LoadEndDate); int recordCount = 0; if (SummarySection) { Log.Info("Writing CSV report summary section ... "); foreach (KeyValuePair<KeyValuePair<LoadStatus, string>, CategoryResult> categoryResult in m_DataLoadResult.DataLoadResults) { streamWriter.WriteLine("\"{0}\",\"{1}\",\"{2}\",\"{3}\"", ((int)CSVRecordType.Summary).ToString("D2", CultureInfo.CurrentCulture), categoryResult.Value.StatusString, categoryResult.Value.Count.ToString(CultureInfo.CurrentCulture), categoryResult.Value.Category); recordCount++; } } Log.Info("Writing CSV report cases section ... "); foreach (KeyValuePair<KeyValuePair<LoadStatus, string>, CategoryResult> categoryResult in m_DataLoadResult.DataLoadResults) { foreach (CaseLoadResult result in categoryResult.Value.CaseLoadResults) { if ((LoadStatus.Success == result.Status && SuccessCases) || (LoadStatus.Warnings == result.Status && WarningCases) || (LoadStatus.Failure == result.Status && FailureCases) || (LoadStatus.NotProcessed == result.Status && NotProcessedCases)) { streamWriter.Write("\"{0}\",\"{1}\",\"{2}\",\"{3}\",\"{4}\"", ((int)CSVRecordType.Result).ToString("D2", CultureInfo.CurrentCulture), result.Status, result.UniqueId, result.Category, result.ClassicReference); if (RawResponse) { streamWriter.Write(",\"{0}\"", result.ResponseXml); } streamWriter.WriteLine(); recordCount++; } } } streamWriter.WriteLine("\"{0}\",\"{1}\"", ((int)CSVRecordType.Count).ToString("D2", CultureInfo.CurrentCulture), recordCount); Log.Info("CSV report written to '{0}'", fileName); } catch (IOException execption) { string errorMessage = string.Format(CultureInfo.CurrentCulture, "Unable to write XML report to '{0}'", fileName); Log.Error(errorMessage); Log.Error(exception.Message); throw new MyException(errorMessage, exception); } finally { if (null != streamWriter) { streamWriter.Close(); } } } The file produced contains a set of records on each line 0 to N, for example: [Record Zero] [Record One] ... [Record N] However the file produced either contains nulls or incomplete records from further up the file appended to the end. For example: [Record Zero] [Record One] ... [Record N] [Lots of nulls] or [Record Zero] [Record One] ... [Record N] [Half complete records] This also happens in separate pieces of code that also use the StreamWriter class. Furthermore, the files produced all have sizes that are multiples of 1024. I've been unable to reproduce this behaviour on any other machine and have tried recreating the environment. Previous versions of the application didn't exhibite this behaviour despite having the same code for the methods in question. EDIT: Added extra code.

  • Multi-threaded random_r is slower than single threaded version.

    - by Nixuz
    The following program is essentially the same the one described here. When I run and compile the program using two threads (NTHREADS == 2), I get the following run times: real 0m14.120s user 0m25.570s sys 0m0.050s When it is run with just one thread (NTHREADS == 1), I get run times significantly better even though it is only using one core. real 0m4.705s user 0m4.660s sys 0m0.010s My system is dual core, and I know random_r is thread safe and I am pretty sure it is non-blocking. When the same program is run without random_r and a calculation of cosines and sines is used as a replacement, the dual-threaded version runs in about 1/2 the time as expected. #include <pthread.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <stdio.h> #define NTHREADS 2 #define PRNG_BUFSZ 8 #define ITERATIONS 1000000000 void* thread_run(void* arg) { int r1, i, totalIterations = ITERATIONS / NTHREADS; for (i = 0; i < totalIterations; i++){ random_r((struct random_data*)arg, &r1); } printf("%i\n", r1); } int main(int argc, char** argv) { struct random_data* rand_states = (struct random_data*)calloc(NTHREADS, sizeof(struct random_data)); char* rand_statebufs = (char*)calloc(NTHREADS, PRNG_BUFSZ); pthread_t* thread_ids; int t = 0; thread_ids = (pthread_t*)calloc(NTHREADS, sizeof(pthread_t)); /* create threads */ for (t = 0; t < NTHREADS; t++) { initstate_r(random(), &rand_statebufs[t], PRNG_BUFSZ, &rand_states[t]); pthread_create(&thread_ids[t], NULL, &thread_run, &rand_states[t]); } for (t = 0; t < NTHREADS; t++) { pthread_join(thread_ids[t], NULL); } free(thread_ids); free(rand_states); free(rand_statebufs); } I am confused why when generating random numbers the two threaded version performs much worse than the single threaded version, considering random_r is meant to be used in multi-threaded applications.
