• What would happen if I did a "Boot to VHD" to a VHD that was configured to run under Hyper-V?

  Microsoft has a Hyper-V based VM I'm interested in running, however, I don't have access to a Windows Server 2008 machine to try it on, only a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine (Windows 7 does not support Hyper-V). This is the VM in question: This download contains three Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V Virtual Machine set for evaluating and demonstrating Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 and Project Server 2010. 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine (SP1) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27417 I came across a somewhat relevant article from Scott Hanselman: Less Virtual, More Machine - Windows 7 and the magic of Boot to VHD: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/LessVirtualMoreMachineWindows7AndTheMagicOfBootToVHD.aspx I realize other options are to convert this VM to a VMWare compatible VM or some of the options to run it under VirtualBox. But instead of those routes, I'm wondering: What would happen if I tried to go the "Boot to VHD" route using this Hyper-V VHD? Is it possible that during the boot process, Windows would simply notice that hardware had changed and adjust accordingly, installing the appropriate drivers and continuing on without a hitch?

  I've set a samba server that seems to work, all shares are seemingly exported as readonly, however. The machine is called "lx". I noted that domain accounts did NOT include a domain and they are in german (as on the SBS 2003 that is the domain server). So I get a "Domänenbenutzer" in wbinfo -u's output not a "CUSTOMER+Domain User" or something similar. (Who may access it). As mentioned, accessing the share from smbclient results in this NT_STATUS_MEDIA_WRITE_PROTECTED . Accessing it from windows shows ACLs that look correct (The user may write) - but it does not work, I can only read files not write.   I have a 500GB external drive. It had two partitions, each around 250GB. I removed the first partition. I'd like to move the 2nd to the left, so it consumes 100% of the drive.   SharePoint list items have in the the base Item template a field named Order. This field is not shown by default. SharePoint 2007, 2010 and 2013 have a possibility to specify the order in a UI, using the _layouts page: {SiteUrl}/_layouts/Reorder.aspx?List={ListId} In SharePoint 2010 and 2013 it is possible to add a custom action to a list. It is possible to add a custom action to order list items as follows (SharePoint 2010 description): Open SharePoint Designer 2010 Navigate to a list Select Custom Actions > List Item Menu Fill in the dialog box: Open List Settings > Advanced Settings > Content Types, and set Allow management of content types to No  On List Settings select Column Ordering This results in the following UI in the browser: Selecting the custom Order Items action (under List Tools > Items) results in: You can change your custom action in SharePoint designer. On the list screen in the bottom right corner you can find the custom action: We now need to modify the view to include the order by adding the Order field to the view, and sorting on the Order field. Problem is that the Order field is hidden. It is possible to modify the schema of the Order field to set the Hidden attribute to FALSE. • Help looking before I leap! I need expert guidance...

  27" iMac running win7 under bootcamp (slick! ). I have Access 2003 program with files linked through ODBC used by 4 installations (all with Access 2003 installed). I want to buy Access 2010 and try it under virtual PC (under Bootcamp). Will it work (since I have to install the ODBC drivers)? If I decide after this trial that I like what it does, can I then install it under the Windows 7 bootcamp partition (with or without uninstalling the virtual PC) without using up the 2nd allowed installation? Also, I see that MS allows an Office Pro 2010 trial download good for 60 days. Would this work in Windows 7 Virtual PC and would it be a better way to go, followed by a legitimate purchase of Access 2010 for the Windows 7? This is not an Access programming question--I realize there may be some tweaks necessary in the program to run it under 2010 and I can handle that part.

• Blog Rebranding

  I have been spending more and more time on learning as much as I can on Agile Development and also have been fairly immersed in rolling out TFS 2010 in our environment.  I feel like it is time to talk about some of my experiences.  With that, I am rebranding my blog to focus on these topics.  I am going to start with a bunch of blogs on the process I have gone through getting TFS 2010 configured for our development teams.   I am trying to use SQL Server Management Studio 2008's Activity Monitor with an SQL Server 2000 instance to diagnose some query performance issues. I can connect SMSS 2008 to the db fine, and use it to browse objects and run queries. But when I press the Activity Monitor button, it pops up an error message saying: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio This operation does not support connections to Microsoft SQL Server Personal Edition version 8.00.818. This MSDN article implies that Activity Monitor works with SQL Server 2000. Is it the fact that it's Personal Edition that's preventing it from working? The error message isn't clear whether it's the edition or version that's the problem.

  I have multiple versions of Excel installed. Excel 2010, 2007 and 2003. I have them installed on one hard drive with Windows 7 Ultimate as the OS. When I double-click on an XLS file, Excel 2007 opens. I would like Excel 2010 to open. I read and followed the instructions to go to the Control Panel at "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs" and set the default programs. I changed the default to the physical EXE for Excel 2010 at the proper folder that it is installed. When I double-click on the XLS files, Excel 2007 still opens. So I tried to change it to Excel 2003 just to see if it changed to that and it still opens Excel 2007. What am I missing? I would really like the file extension to open Excel 2010, but can not seem to do that.

• How to start an iPhone 3.1.3 project in Xcode 3.2.3 (iPhone SDK 4 beta)

  Hi there! I am having big problems since I downloaded the beta version of iPhone SDK 4.0. Okay, I just started to look at iPhone development a few weeks ago, but I cannot figure out how Xcode is supposed to work: whenever I start a new project, I choose a template like "View-based application" or so. Now, the target will always (at least I did not find a preference anywhere!) be the latest SDK: 4.0. But then: switching the target back to, say, 3.1.3 the template files seem to contain errors! Starting an empty application this way yields an exception: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSUnknownKeyException', reason: [...] this class is not key value coding-compliant for the key rootViewController sick Now, my (stupid) question: How do I develop an application NOT targeting the latest SDK, but the standard 3.1.3 SDK?? In other words: I would expect Xcode not only to ask for a project type in the New Project window, but also for my desired target!! Am I right that the templates generated with this step are not valid for any other target than 4.0? How can that be?? ...I want my Eclipse back! sigh Can anybody help me please?

  Hi there I'm fairly new to Rails and the Mac, and doing my first deploy... I'm trying to set up my rails app on a brand new Apple mini-server running OXS1.6 (Snow Leopard). It is currently running fine on my new iMac i7 (same OS). I start mongrel with this command: mongrel_rails start -e production -p 3000 -d -a 127.0.0.1 --debug And it starts giving this output in the log/mongrel.log ** Daemonized, any open files are closed. Look at log/mongrel.pid and log/mongrel.log for info. ** Starting Mongrel listening at 127.0.0.1:3000 ** Installing debugging prefixed filters. Look in log/mongrel_debug for the files. ** Starting Rails with production environment... /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/rails/gem_dependency.rb:119:Warning: Gem::Dependency#version_requirements is deprecated and will be removed on or after August 2010. The difference is that accessing http://127.0.0.1:3000 on my iMac serves up the app's login page. Where as on the mac mini-server accessing the same results in this error 500 text from mongrel: "We're sorry, but something went wrong." It's as if rails is not working. I'm pretty good at figuring things out if I have some log file messages to direct me, but mongrel.log has no error message (the output remains the same as above), and the log/production.log is empty (which makes me think rails has not started?). My gems are all the same versions between machines and so is the app code; and there are no clues I can see in any of the mongrel_debug logs, except that rails.log on the mac mini-server and the iMac are different. • NDepend tool – Why every developer working with Visual Studio.NET must try it!

  In the past two months, I have had a chance to test the capabilities and features of the amazing NDepend tool designed to help you make your .NET code better, more beautiful and achieve high code quality. In other words, this tool will definitely help you harmonize your code. I mean, you’ve probably heard about Chaos Theory. Experienced developers and architects are already advocates of the programming chaos that happens when working with complex project architecture, the matrix of relationships between objects which simply even if you are the one who have written all that code, you know how hard is to visualize everything what does the code do. When the application get more and more complex, you will start missing a lot of details in your code… NDepend will help you visualize all the details on a clever way that will help you make smart moves to make your code better. The NDepend tool supports many features, such as: Code Query Language – which will help you write custom rules and query your own code! Imagine, you want to find all your methods which have more than 100 lines of code :)! That’s something simple! However, I will dig much deeper in one of my next blogs which I’m going to dedicate to the NDepend’s CQL (Code Query Language) Architecture Visualization – You are an architect and want to visualize your application’s architecture? I’m thinking how many architects will be really surprised from their architectures since NDepend shows your whole architecture showing each piece of it. NDepend will show you how your code is structured. It shows the architecture in graphs, but if you have very complex architecture, you can see it in Dependency Matrix which is more suited to display large architecture Code Metrics – Using NDepend’s panel, you can see the code base according to Code Metrics. You can do some additional filtering, like selecting the top code elements ordered by their current code metric value. You can use the CQL language for this purpose too. Smart Search – NDepend has great searching ability, which is again based on the CQL (Code Query Language). However, you have some options to search using dropdown lists and text boxes and it will generate the appropriate CQL code on fly. Moreover, you can modify the CQL code if you want it to fit some more advanced searching tasks. Compare Builds and Code Difference – NDepend will also help you compare previous versions of your code with the current one at one of the most clever ways I’ve seen till now. Create Custom Rules – using CQL you can create custom rules and let NDepend warn you on each build if you break a rule Reporting – NDepend can automatically generate reports with detailed stats, graph representation, dependency matrixes and some additional advanced reporting features that will simply explain you everything related to your application’s code, architecture and what you’ve done. And that’s not all. As I’ve seen, there are many other features that NDepend supports. I will dig more in the upcoming days and will blog more about it.
